Hike Spain’s Picos de Europa

The location was so close, only 1.5 hour flight, so no long haul. The small town where we stayed was unspoiled and on the hikes themselves we hardly saw anyone else. The scenery was dramatic and the hikes made the most of that. There were some tricky conditions because of previous heavy rains, and our guide needed to adapt the order that we did two of the walks in and he checked on the weather conditions during the hikes and did make a couple of changes (to get down to a lower altitude when rain threatened). His support of everyone in the group and his decision making was excellent. He was professional, friendly, well informed on the terrain and its history. Also, away from the hikes, he ensured the two non-gluten guests and the one vegetarian (me) were well catered for.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to say as there were so many. The stunning Cares Gorge, walking with the river far below and the peaks way above us. The amazing views from the Collado de Pandebano, after hiking up through the woods. The spring flowers every day. The treat of seeing Chamois on our final day on the route following the old mining track. Two of the hikes made use of tracks that had been built for the hydroelectric dam and previous mining works, and I loved that we, as tourists could now use those tracks, no longer needed for industry, to see such stunning scenery. Our guide, Alfonso.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was an excellent leader on the hikes themselves and was always aware of the weather conditions and any changes that needed to be made. He was alert if someone needed encouragement or assistance. He carried the backpack of one of the party during a steep, slippery descent. He was also quick to resolve any issues with our accommodation and food (though I had no issues at all with those). He made the whole experience fun, whilst always being professional and inspiring confidence. His English was excellent.

We love exodus holidays. The guides are normally well chosen and work hard to ensure you have an enjoyable experience.

The walks were on good paths but the ascents made them hard but but doable and were chosen for the spectacular views. They were breathtaking and well worth the effort.

He was very sociable but also took pains to ensure any other needs we wanted from the holiday were met. I told him I'd also like to practice speaking Spanish as I am a learner an he and Javier made time to do that. I very much appreciated that.

Fantastic trip in the Picos mountains. Guide was awesome. Hotel excellent. Bit disappointed with airport transfer arrangements as unable to join group transfer.

The mountains, the people and the first class guide

Thoughts on Group Leader

I've trekked and climbed with many guides over the years and Alfonso is definitely one of the best. Clearly very passionate about the Picos mountains, very knowledgeable, very inclusive and very aware of clients abilities/safety. Always good humoured and an all round fantastic person to spend time with in the mountains. First class!

Hike Spain’s Picos de Europa

It was absolutely wonderful – with a big proportion of the enjoyment being thanks to the guides. Alfonso for the hiking and Javier making sure that everything was working well. Two really great guys.

The in country team of Alfonso and Javier were superb, enthusing the whole group with their love of the mountains, great food and fellowship. Their day to day organisation was faultless.

I suppose that getting to the summit if any mountain feels likes an achievement, so possibly Pene de Main, but I loved every day of the week.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was pretty awesome. Everything was arranged well, he gave clear and timely briefings, was always full of enthusiasm and smiling broadly through. Very friendly to us all, helpful and so knowledgeable about the area, the mountains and many other areas of interest. He worked hard, but made it look effortless, to include everyone and made a good holiday and exceptional one.
