Gorillas and Masai Mara

There is no way to describe how perfect this trip was. It was all I had expected and much more. Every aspect of the trip deserves a superlative. It was as if the trip was made to give us the absolute best of each featured activity. The migration was at its height, we saw the “Big Five” within the first 24 hours, the balloon ride took us down into the river twice, the white water rafting was breathtaking (still smiling!), and the gorillas can never be adequately described in words or duplicated in pictures. This was truly the trip of a lifetime with a group of like minded, fun and spirited companions, who had all come to experience it all from a “real” level. Definitely the best trip I have ever taken.

Most Inspirational Moment

Have to say there were two. The first has to be the gorilla interaction in which I had a silverback charge down the hill, end up sitting next to me, breathing on me, and the two of us looking at each other multiple times, eye to eye, before he moved on. There is no question we are related! The second was viewing the great migration from the air. It was like watching a giant swarm of ants move across the plain. Must have been what the great buffalo herds of the American West were like. When we then moved down to ground level, the entire picture was made whole. I have a new respect for Mother Nature and her great plans for her creatures.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jakob was outstanding! With a wry sense of humor and great local knowledge, he led us through this fantastic journey. He was a leader, fellow traveler and friend. His interest in being sure we all had the best individual trip possible was obvious. He was always there for us. Can't say enough about our driver, George! Can't imagine how he drove that giant truck over so much difficult terrain and through crazy areas! Hats off to him. The meals Daniel made were always a delight. The fresh vegetables local, crisp, tasty and delightful. Lots of variety and fresh fruit all the time. You will not go hungry. And, last, but not least, Alex, our guide in training. He did it all, from assisting with meals, to truck repair, tent placement, set up, portage, etc. Anything anyone needed, he was there, and always with a great big smile. He is going to be a great leader very shortly. What a crew!!! They were all like family to us.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for some hiking for the gorillas, but don't let that put you off. Definitely worth the effort and there are individuals who will give you a hand with gear (or just a hand!) if you need it. Go with an open mind, be flexible, and be prepared to smile a lot!! Also, the more you "chip in" with the chores, the more you will enjoy your trip and bond with your "vacation family". This is a "must do" trip.

Great cycling, food, scenery and general variety

A brilliant week of suitably challenging cycling through varied rural, mountainous and coastal scenery in a fascinating country. Great food and high standard of accommodation compared to other equivalent trips. From not knowing what to expect of Albania I loved the whole trip and would go back to explore the more mountainous north. Well-maintained hire bikes suitable for the roads and terrain.

Most Inspirational Moment

Brilliant cycling, great food, and... The Llagora Pass. Chilling out at Farme Sotira. Greco-Roman ruins at Butrint.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We were very well looked after by Armand and Marsela.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip is at the high end of a Moderate, more a 4 than a 3 for the combination of hills, distance and temperature (over 30C!). On spending money, food is very cheap by our standards (also very fresh and tasty!). While prices vary and increase slightly as you move to the coast, for the whole week we spent up to £100 on meals, including a drink with dinners.

Ascent of Mt Toubkal

The holiday was well balanced to allow a slow build up to acclimatise for altitude and help build up fitness before the final walk up to the Mt.Toubkal summit. Optional climbs were included for the more energetic, but there was no pressure to do these if you felt your energy reserves would be better expended on the summit climb. (Particularly if due to advancing years you have to be careful what you use up your energy on!)

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the summit of Mt.Toubbal was the highlight of my trip. The view from the top was spectacular and the weather gave us excellent visibility.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Hassan, our leader was always cheerful and willing to impart his extensive knowledge. He always set a steady pace which suited the whole party.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Try to do a few hill walks before you go. The paths are quite rough and it helps if you are used to sliding downhill on scree.

Magical scenery, delicious food, tough hills in the heat

An amazing trip led by the kind, caring Paolo. I’d advise being prepared for tough hill climbs in the middle of the day in the heat. Well organised, accommodation comfortable, food and company wonderful.

Most Inspirational Moment

The surreal experience of riding along the winding coastal roads of the Amalfi, looking out at the sparkling blue sea and gorgeous vertical villages from well above.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paolo was very professional, caring and calm

Advice for Potential Travellers

As above, this trip is probably on the challenging side of moderate, especially from July-Sept climbing those hills on 30 plus degree days. Hydrate +++ and go at your own pace. Then again, I hadn't really done the training, that might be a good idea too.

Cycling in Albania

This was an excellent new cycling trip put on by Exodus. The accommodation and food was excellent but I did find the cycling hard in the hot conditions. I would thoroughly recommend this trip to my family and friends.

Most Inspirational Moment

The last day doing the big pass and getting to the top in the 36 degrees heat.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Rongai route to Uhuru - Aug 2015

This trip was execellent and we couldn’t have been taken care of any better by the team, almost felt a little criminal how pampered we where. The guides (Henry, James, Sarafin and ) had great knowledge and kept a very watchful eye on the whole party to monitor how everyone was coping, they adapted walks and talks to ensure everyone’s needs where met. At all times they where positive and encouraging whilst also pushing us along to ensure we achieved the summit.

Personally I’ve never been so well fed on a trip like this, it was 3 course breakfast, lunch and dinner with a Menu that Milton our Cook was only to happy to change at our request.

The porters are amazing, carrying heavy loads and flying off ahead of us from the start, shouting Jambo as they pass. The camp was always ready for us when we arrived which for a few was a god send as they flopped into their beds after a trek.

Our whole group made it onto the top of Kilimanjaro which is a great credit to the support provided by the team.

Most Inspirational Moment

Waking up in the morning, sitting in my tent door drinking tea whilst looking out over the top of the clouds a sight I've only previously seen from plane windows.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Henry was knowledgeable, watchful, friendly and approachable. He run a tight ship with everything in camp being well managed. He provided lots of advice and support throughout the trek and constantly checked that everyone was ok. His briefings in the evenings where corehensive and he was able to answer all our questions

Advice for Potential Travellers

Drink lots and lots of water hydration is key, eat as much as possible (even when you don't want to) as you really burn through the calories. Make sure you strengthen your legs before the trip as I saw a lot of people struggling with the steep climb on the main day

Makrha Valley

This was a great experience the Markha Valley is truly unique part of the world. We arrived a in Leh a week after heavy rains and closed the track due to flooding and some land slides. The Exodus team worked extremely hard to plan an alternate route if we could not do the Markha trek. Luckily the Markha valley track was reopened and we were able to do the planned walk. The views the landscape the local people all well and truly exceeded my expectations.

Most Inspirational Moment

Standing at the top of Gongmaru Pass with fantastic views in all directions was truly inspiring.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The Group leader Ngima could not have been better nothing was too hard for him he was committed tot he group 24/7. his commitment an happy smiling face help to make the trek the wonderful experienced that it was.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The river crossing can be a bit tough on two days we spent several hours following the river bed crossing and recrossing the river jumping from stone to stone, I personally found this a bit challenging due to problems with a dodgy ankle.

10th Exodus Trip & now waiting for 2016 Cycling Brochure

Another great cycling holiday experience with Exodus. Our guide Suresh and the rest of the support crew were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for them and they were passionate and proud about their country. The cycling was varied but as our group showed doable by all giving everyone a real sense of achievement and a great way to experience the delights & scenery of Sri Lanka. The one watch out is don’t expect to lose weight on this trip as the variety of food available at the buffets means you are likely to end up doing maximum damage for very little money.

Most Inspirational Moment

The variety of the cycling in terms of both the terrain and scenery that you pass through and the warm smiles on the faces of the Sri Lankans even if we must have looked a strange sight in lycra, wearing helmets and being on bikes.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh is clearly very passionate about his country and his passion is totally infectious.

Advice for Potential Travellers

For me the hotels were better than I expected and with a reasonable level of fitness doing all the cycling is definitely achievable. I realise it is fairly obvious but be prepared for it to be hot and humid however, our trip was not really affected by the forecasted rain.

Inca Trai & Amazon Rain Forest

A truly one off experience. Never a dull moment, not a trip if you want a restful holiday. We had a fantastic leader who was completing his 649th inca trail; Bobby knew everything there was to know from the best view points to the optimum times to enter Matchu Pitchu to advoid the crowds.

Most Inspirational Moment

1. Seeing hundreds of Macaws fly at dawn. 2. Making it up Dead Woman's Pass 3. Reed Islands on Lake Titticaca

Thoughts on Group Leader

Amazing, very knowledgable and knew the best sites, times, camping areas. He jokes also kept our spirits high ( plastic tarantula at the summit of the pass!) Bobby was very proud to be fron the Andes and conveyed his love of the mountains to us, walking the trail held some very special reflective moments for the majority of our group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You don't have to be super fit but you do need to be determined. If you want to trek at this altitude you CAN do it. Follow the advice of your guide - little or no alcohol and easily digestible food. Cocoa chewing gum helps and talk and iPod

walking the Picos de Europa

Wonderful holiday! Stunning scenery, perfect weather, exceptional guide , great group and excellent hotel with delicious food!

Most Inspirational Moment

Successfully reaching the optional additional peak on the last day and experiencing the amazing views and the sense of achievement.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Outstanding! Alvaro was all that one could want in a guide. He was endlessly encouraging and patient and went out of his way to ensure that absolutely everyone got the most out of the trip whenever possible allowing everyone to go walk at the pace that was natural for them. He had a passion for his area and a seemingly encyclopaedic knowledge of the flora and fauna , local history, culture, and food and drink.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book it! I would say you do need a good level of fitness. I'd agree with the level 3 rating though some felt that it was possibly a bit higher. The dispensers in the hotel bathroom have very acceptable quality shower gel and shampoo and there is no need to take any extra towels if you do the beach trip on the free day.
