Begin your adventure in the medieval city of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. If you have time after your arrival, we recommend strolling through the streets of the Old Town to Raekoja Plats (Town Hall Square), which is surrounded by elaborate merchant houses and is the perfect setting to enjoy a coffee.

Around 6pm, say tere (hello) to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead.

Your tour leader then ensures a big Estonian welcome by arranging a group dinner together.

Accommodation: Go Hotel Shnelli (or similar)

  • Meals included:Dinner

This morning there is free time to further explore the Estonian capital (timings will be confirmed by the guide in the welcome briefing). In the afternoon, we drive out of the city (approximately one hour) to Lahemaa National Park for our first ride. The park, one of the last unspoilt regions on the Baltic Coast, covers more than 270sqmi (700sqkm). Here you will cycle through thick woods, and past marshes and lakes. Also keep your eyes peeled for moose and wild boar, although they’re difficult to spot, and more than 220 bird species.

Accommodation: Hotel Wesenbergh (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast
Cycle the Baltics

Today we have a full day to explore the largest national park in Estonia and one of the biggest in Europe. We will take a bus to Vihula manor, then we cycle through the 400-year-old fisherman’s village of Altja, the popular seaside resort of Vosu and Kasmu village which is home to a fisherman’s museum before we reach Sagadi. From there we take a bus back to our hotel.

Accommodation: Hotel Wesenbergh (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

We start the day with a bus transfer to the shore of Peipsi Lake (approximately 90 minutes), then start cycling from the 17th-century fisherman’s village of Mustvee. From here, we pass through ancient towns and churches. Following an old Russian tradition, villages in Peipsi only have one street. Because of this, the shore of Peipsi Lake is one long street with lots of small settlements dotted along it. We continue cycling into Varnja and then transfer to Tartu (approximately 30 minutes).

Accommodation: Tartu Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

After breakfast, we have a 25mi (40km) transfer to Otepaa. This area is known as the Estonian Switzerland because of its stunning scenery and pine forests. As you might expect, there are a few hills on today’s ride, though nothing too challenging with the gradient not passing seven percent. Once over the hills, we cycle through beautiful forest and meadows and past Lake Puhajarve on our way to Sangaste town. We then continue cycling to Valga city, and from here we transfer by bus to Riga (approximately 2hr 30min), our base for the next two nights.

Accommodation: Islande Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Our journey today will start in bustling Riga, the capital of Latvia. The city has a Medieval old town with wooden buildings and art nouveau architecture. We then follow cycle paths to the beautiful town of Jurmala, which has more incredible wooden buildings and 19th-century Russian villas. Jurmala is also one of the largest seaside resorts in Latvia – it has a 21mi (33km) stretch of white sandy beach for us to explore on our bikes. There will be plenty of time to swim in the sea before we transfer back to Riga for the night.

Accommodation: Islande Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

After breakfast, we leave Latvia and transfer directly to Lithuania (approximately four hours). We begin our ride in Sventoji on a beautiful cycle route to Klaipeda, which lies along the Baltic Coast. On the way, we pass Palanga, a traditional bucket and spade seaside town with a long sandy stretch. It’s a fun place for a wander and sea dip, and one of the most favoured seaside towns among Lithuanians. There are numerous cafes where we can lunch and enjoy the atmosphere before we set off for our final destination of Klaipeda, our base for two nights.

Accommodation: Old Mill Hotel or Memel Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast
Cycle the Baltics

We transfer to the resort town of Nida (approximately 90 minutes including the ferry ride), which is known as a hub for artists. From here, we explore the 61mi (98km) long Curonian Spit. The high dunes (up to 197ft/60m) running along the spit have encouraged the local people to refer to the area as the Lithuanian Sahara. During our ride, we will stop in Juodkrante and admire the bizarre wooden carvings on what is known as Witch Hill. The sculpture park was started in 1979 and now has more than 70 carvings representing characters from Lithuanian folklore. We then continue along the spit with the Baltic Sea extending far into the distance. We finish the ride at the ferry port, and from here we take the ferry across the lagoon then transfer back to the hotel in Klaipeda for the night.

Accommodation: Old Mill Hotel or Memel Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

We start the day with a bus transfer (approximately 2hr 30min) to Zapyskis, a centuries-old small town in the Kaunas district. Here we jump on our bikes and cycle past old villages, beaches and the Nemunas, the largest river in the country. Halfway through our ride, we stop to explore Kaunas city, a European Capital of Culture in 2022. Our end point is Pažaislis Monastery, where a 17th-century baroque church dominates the grounds. After, we’ll transfer to Vilnius by bus (approximately 1hr 30min).

Accommodation: Comfort Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast
Cycle the Baltics

After breakfast, we transfer by bus to Senieji (Old) Trakai. From here, we have a picturesque ride to Galve Lake (with possibility to have a lakeside picnic and a swim in the lake). Here sits Trakai Castle, as if floating on its own island in the lake – it’s a truly magical place. After we explore the area and visit the castle, we continue our ride to Užutrakis Manor Park while enjoying the scenery. Here we finish our cycling for today and transfer back to Vilnius for the night.

Accommodation: Comfort Hotel (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Transfer to Vilnius airport; fly to London.

  • Meals included:Breakfast

We have a free morning in Vilnius before the trip ends. If you’d like to spend a bit longer in this special city, perhaps exploring the Unesco-recognised old town, then you can speak to your sales representative about extending your stay.

Accommodation

Two- and three-star hotels

On this trip, we stay in two- and three-star hotels, ideally located for our cycling adventures. Below are the properties we typically use.

Tallinn: Go Shnelli Hotel (night 1)

Cycle the Baltics

We begin our adventure by staying near the medieval old town of Tallinn and Balti Jaam Market. When you’re not out exploring, the first-floor hotel restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows with views over both and serves breakfast plus an à la carte dinner menu.

Rakvere, near Lahemaa National Park: Hotel Wesenbergh (nights 2-3)

Cycle the Baltics

A stay at Hotel Wesenbergh provides easy access to our rides in Lahemaa National Park. However, we’re also in the centre of Rakvere, while the hotel has a bistro dishing out traditional Estonian cuisine (Monday to Friday).

Tartu: Hotel Tartu (night 4)

Cycle the Baltics

In the city centre, Hotel Tartu is within walking distance of the old town and the Vanemuine Theatre (the oldest theatre in Estonia). There’s also a 70-seat cafe on the ground floor plus a sauna centre (additional cost) with Finnish and steam saunas. If you plan on using the sauna centre, you need to bring flip flops (or purchase them from the hotel for €3).

Riga: Islande Hotel (nights 5-6)

Cycle the Baltics

Near the Daugava River, the Islande has a magnificent panoramic view of Riga Old Town. It’s located in a green area of Ķīpsala island, a 12-minute walk from the Old City, and offers a wide range of amenities, including a bowling alley, sauna, gym, two restaurants and a summer terrace.

Klaipeda: Old Mill Hotel or Memel Hotel (nights 7-8)

Cycle the Baltics

In the port city of Klaipeda, we stay at either the Old Mill Hotel or Memel Hotel (above), which are both ideally located for our ferry ride to the UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit. The former was once the biggest rice mill in Lithuania, before being converted into a 32-room hotel in 2008. The latter takes over a property built in 1876, and offers 50 comfortable rooms.

Vilnius: Comfort Hotel LT – Rock’n’Roll Vilnius (nights 9-10)

Cycle the Baltics

With an industrial style and music theme, our Vilnius hotel has plenty of personality. The 80 rooms are all air conditioned with underfloor heating in the bathroom, plus the Mellow restaurant serves a menu packed with local produce. Other nice additions are a free-to-use gym and a lobby shop selling beers, snacks, sandwiches and more.

Worth knowing

  • If you opt for the single supplement, please note that in some hotels, this may mean having a room with a single bed.

Expert Leader: Baltics
Introducing Andrius Andrius joined the Exodus team in 2018, bringing a wealth of knowledge on Baltics history and culture, enhanced by his own experience of living within the Soviet Union.

This trip is rated Activity Level 2 (Easy & Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings please visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.

  • Nine days of cycling with full vehicle support.
  • Average daily distance: 28mi (45km).

We mainly take quiet backroads, paths through national parks and coastal cycle tracks. There are some up and down sections, so a reasonable level of fitness is required, though most of the route is flat. We are covering a large area, so there are bus transfers on most of the cycling days, this enables us to see all the highlights and use the bikes to cover the best bits.

Before reaching the cities, the leader will give you information on their history and places of interest and will guide you into town; however, they are not allowed to give you a guided tour due to local restrictions. You can either wander around at your own pace or pay locally for an official city guide.

Renovations: Trakai Castle is currently undergoing renovation work, which may mean you see some scaffolding on the outside of the building.

  • Breakfast: Taken in the hotels. In most places, these will be buffet style and will offer plenty of choice including cold meat, cheese, eggs, bread, jams and juice.
  • Lunches: On many of the days due to our remote rides there will be the option to buy a picnic from the hotel or get supplies on the way – we can then choose a spot on our ride to stop for a break. This means we can be flexible and choose the best views for lunch. On some days, there will be opportunities to buy lunch in cafes in the towns that we go through such as Palanga.
  • Dinners: Cuisine in this area is often centred around pork, veal, fish, potatoes, sauerkraut and soups such as borsch (beetroot soup with meat; in Lithuania this is served cold). In Trakai, kibinai are popular, these are large savoury baked pastries traditionally filled with lamb or beef.

The climate is largely influenced by the Baltic Sea. Summers are warm with temperatures from 20C to 30C (68F to 86F). In the evenings, the temperatures will not drop too much. There is little rain in the summer but it’s always a possibility, so it is best to come prepared. The days will be long, with up to 19 hours of daylight. In spring and autumn, there is the possibility of light rain. Estonia is the furthest north and therefore the coldest, although the temperature range described applies. Lithuania is the furthest south, which makes it the warmest country of the three.

September in ther Baltics.

This was a very (very) enjoyable vacation. We have a good mix of personalities in the group who got on together and a great guide, Lina, who kept everything rolling. The mix of cycling and Baltic culture was the right balance and the sunny, warm weather, for all but the...

Most Inspirational Moment

It's difficult to choose only one, the variety of the trip provided plenty of memorable moments, but on reflection, I particularly enjoyed the tranquillity of cycling the excellent paths through the vast pine forests, with the sunshine poking through the trees, many times, purposely hanging back from the group with my thoughts or singing to myself. Mindfulness whilst cycling no-handed for the first time since I was around fourteen - don't knock it unless you've tried it, it's great!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Although I'd read the itinerary before booking the trip and a few times after that, like many people, I simply forgot most of it by the time I'd arrived in Estonia.. Therefore, I attach a lot of importance to being reminded of what is in store. Lina met us on the first evening in Tallinn and was clear on what the trip involved and her and our responsibilities, thus managing our expectations from the start. I benefited from Lina providing clear and concise direction every day and throughout the day, taking and answering any/all questions, not every trip I have been on was as carefully orchestrated.  We (I) teased Lina that she was our (my) 2nd, 3rd and even 6th favourite guide in the Baltics, but I think I can speak for the group when I say that everyone thought Lina was fabulous. She was very knowledgeable, spoke faultless English, provided personal family stories, that on occasions touched the whole group and highlighted the contrast in the lives of people under Soviet rule pre 1991 with our pampered lives in the West.  Additionally, there was never any doubt she was leading the group, she has a great sense of humour, limitless patience and was very likeable. If you read this Lina, you were really always my favourite guide in the Baltics.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I'd describe this as a cultural trip with some cycling, if you want big climbs, fast descents and your heart and lungs ready to burst, this is NOT the trip for you. If you want to broaden your knowledge of this extremely-interesting part of Europe and see so many different aspects of the three beautiful Baltic countries, whilst making new friends, eating 'new' foods (Georgina, Ubekistani, as well as Estonia, Latvian and Lithuanian), and sampling new experiences, this is a perfect way to do it & cycling allows you to see so many things. And if you fall for the myth that there are no plugs in the Baltics sinks, don't stress too much, I took one and brought it back, still intact in the packet. My main advice is :- Book this trip.

Excellent trip!

I just came back a couple days ago from my 5th bike trip ever-- this was an excellent one! It's mostly flat, so the biking wasn't that hard, but hard enough that I felt I got a great workout every day. Our leader, Lina, was absolutely superb in every way....

Most Inspirational Moment

Most of our dinners were with a view-- beautiful!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent in every way

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definitely bring rain gear-- it rained on 2 of our rides! Not the whole time, but worth bringing something. Do your family research before you come to this area because if you have ancestors from this place, it would be fun to know that!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lukas was very informative, energetic and enthusiastic!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Relatively flat route and distances were not overwhelming so this trip would be a good one for those wanting to find out what a cycling tour is like. That, plust the history and scenery makes this an attractive choice.

The title is very clear and it is exactly what the bike tour was about

I enjoyed the trip tremendously, even though the weather did not cooperate all the time. The biking was exactly as described, not too strenuous, but long enough each day to feel like one got a workout. In addition, the cycling route gave us a good sense of how each country...

Most Inspirational Moment

There is not one but many moments. For Estonia, the most inspiring would be biking along the Gulf of Finland and stopping to have fish soup in Kasmu. It was a perfect combination of biking+history+food. For Latvia, exploring Riga with our guide and walking the old town was amazing. For Lithuania, the entire day spent on the Curonian Spit: biking through pines and dunes; the smoked fish lunch, and the sunset walk on Witches Hill were stunning moments.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrius (Andrew) is an excellent guide for the Baltics. He obviously knows the countries well. He treated us as adults and unless we needed help, tended to be hands off and I appreciate that directness. If one needed additional information for the day's ride, he was happy to provide it. I got the feeling that others may have felt there wasn't enough information given for each day, but that is easily remedied with more info on the WhatApp. All one needed to do was ask. Personally, I felt cared for without being smothered. In addition to leading the rides, he chose very interesting places for lunches and dinners. Aside from the historical insights he shared, we were treated to local foods that included Fish Soup in Kasmu, the smoked fish shack in the Curonian Spit, and the Georgian dinner in Vilnius. Andrius also shared (with humor) the difficulty of life under various occupations. I came away with a very clear sense of why independence matters so much for each of the Baltic countries.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The level of riding described is spot on. It is not a strenous ride, and the distances are not very long each day. Our last two days of riding in Lithuania was hampered by rain and wind, so the original itinerary to bike in Trakai did not happen, instead, our guide led us through a short biking tour of the old city which was fascinating, and we drove to Trakai and explored the castle. Be prepared for rain and cold in June. You are as comfortable as your gear. For biking combined with culture and history of this area, this tour checked all the boxes for me. If you are interested in history and architecture, and extra day in Tallinn and an extra day in Vilnius would be worthwhile. I did elect to ride an e-bike, and the equipment was more than adequate for this ride. Exodus provided waterproof panniers.

A Baltic Adventure That Stole My Heart

Cycling the Baltics

Fascinating trip through interesting cities and countryside in the Baltics, led by the brilliant Lina. I was surprised to read recent negative reviews of this tour as it certainly didn’t match our experience. We were lucky to have a great group that really gelled and we all thought Lina was...

Most Inspirational Moment

Exploring great cities of Riga and Vilnius, amazing architecture and lots of great bars and restaurants. Go to the Lucille blues bar in Vilnius if you like great live music.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lina was amazing, she is intelligent, incredibly articulate and funny and she has huge knowledge of the history of the Baltic countries which she shared in some great stories. She also adds some personal stories about her experience during the Soviet period which made everything seem even more real. A really exceptional Exodus guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Little nuggets would be to take a travel plug if you need to do some washing, few hotel sinks have them. Despite being late September, the insects were out in force so bug repellents is a must. There are plenty of opportunities to swim so take your swimming stuff.

Disappointing

The actual rides did not match the trip notes. The description that suggested we would be on trails seeing lots of small villages and churches, the Baltic Sea; the lakes were not true. We rarely saw any of the suggested items. We cycled a lot of roads which was pressured...

Most Inspirational Moment

I enjoyed the swims in lakes and the Cold War and Amber museums. The last day was the best with a cycle ride on quieter roads with no traffic through more interesting countryside than the usual pine forests ( which became a bit samey ) a boat trip and a swim in the lake. The overall trip needed more variety like this particular day. The choice of hotels was ok. The city visits were good but needed more time.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Vee was possibly new to the tour and had some challenges to deal with both with poor bikes , a lady who was sick and needing hospital admission, a dodgy coach and a group with v different needs. She also got lost on occasions. She wasn't v clear with her instructions and didn't always wait for us all to come together before imparting them which was a consequence of her allowing the group to get too spread out. Her English was good but she confused the group with mixing vital parts of information with then too many options. However she gave us lots of history of the three countries plus her own experience of having lived during the occupation. She arranged a number of activities but timings were not always well planned. I do feel though that a trip like this with a big group ( we were 15) needed two guides.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't do it! But if you decide to bring your own sink plugs!

Reply from Exodus

We take great pride in our tour leaders at Exodus and the positive impact they have on most of our trips. We were, therefore, concerned to discover that yours appeared unprepared to deliver your cycling trip to the high standards we expect. We have an experienced pool of leaders in the Baltics, who receive consistently strong feedback from our groups, however, you may be aware that this was your leader’s first departure with Exodus. Though our leaders undergo thorough training, which includes our extensive induction module, we still find that they find their first trips somewhat daunting, and it appears that this was true of your leader. Though we have every faith in her to be a successful leader for us with additional training, following a review, we do not feel that she is right for our cycling tours and can confirm that she will not be leading any Cycle the Baltics departures this year. We recognise this cannot change anything for you, but we do hope it shows that we listen to our customers’ views and act on feedback to improve our trips. Vivien Urban, Product Manager

Cycling in the Baltics but allocated a poor guide

We were looking forward to discovering more about the Baltic states whilst cycling, however we were let down by being allocated a new guide with very poor English who was unfamiliar with the trip. Fortunately we had a lonely planets guide book and were able to make up for what...

Most Inspirational Moment

The Baltics are great countries to see by bike, with great scenery. Estonia was so clean and full of history. We found an Old believers Museum (from the guide book) and Tartu was so modern. Latvia was pleasant, but hunger overtook us by 3pm with no lunch stop and Riga was fabulous. It would have been helpful to have been told ahead of time that Midsummers day is the Biggest festival of the year in these countries and we found somewhere to celebrate- eventually! And on to Lithuania. We almost missed the Hill of Crosses (iconic place in Lithuania) as it is not on the itinerary. But we made a forced stop! Klaipeda and the Curonian Spit are stunning, but there was so much more we could have been told about it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Valdas was a nice chap but had been placed in a difficult situation and was not a suitable guide for this trip.

Reply from Exodus

Thank you for sharing your feedback, Nia. We sincerely regret that your Cycling the Baltics trip did not meet the high standards we strive to provide, particularly in relation to your tour leader’s performance. We fully understand how essential a knowledgeable and communicative tour leader is to the overall experience, and we are truly sorry that this aspect fell short. While the leader assigned to your departure had prior experience leading cycling tours, was highly recommended, and was thoroughly briefed on the itinerary, we acknowledge that they were not as prepared as they should have been. We also regret that this left you relying on a guidebook to fill in the gaps—this is certainly not the experience we want for our travellers. Following your feedback, we have since taken steps to prevent this from happening again. We have strengthened our leader training, with a particular focus on itinerary knowledge, bike maintenance, and communication skills. Additionally, we have refined our trip preparation process to ensure all future leaders are fully equipped to deliver the informative and engaging experience our travellers expect. We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts, as it helps us improve. While we regret that this trip did not meet expectations, we are grateful you were still able to enjoy the company of your group and make the best of the situation. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you on another adventure in the future—one that reflects the exceptional experience you deserve.   Vivien Urban, Exodus Product Manager
