Overview

The best of Chile: Atacama Desert, Lake District and Patagonia

Chile’s narrow coastal strip stretches for 2,670mi (4,300km) and is dominated by the towering peaks of the Andes. Covering over half the length of South America, Chile has an unparalleled range of environments, from the highest, driest desert in the world, the dramatic Atacama, with its geysers and salt flats, to the fertile valleys and vineyards of central Chile. To the south lies the Lake District with picturesque, snow-capped volcanoes, deep-blue lakes and gushing waterfalls. Further south still, we reach Patagonia, a land of ice fields, mountains, glaciers and immense solitude.

Discover Chile

In Santiago de Chile, the best features of a vibrant, modern metropolis are paired with the old-world charm of a former colonial capital, and the city tour this morning will introduce you to both sides. We’ll begin with a visit to the presidential palace, named La Moneda because the splendid building once housed the national mint. Many other sights in the historic centre are clustered around the always-bustling Plaza de Armas: the impressive cathedral; the beautiful old post office; the Palacio de la Real Audiencia, now home to the National History Museum; and the Casa Colorada, once the Spanish governor’s residence. We also discover the “green lung” of Santiago, the Metropolitan Park on the “Cerro San Cristóbal”, a hill in the middle of the city with a huge white statue of the Virgin Mary crowning its summit.

In the afternoon we travel to the beautiful Maipo Valley south of Santiago and visit Viña Santa Rita. We’ll join a tour through the winery which will introduce you to Chilean viticulture. You will not only find out more about different grapes and their characteristic tastes but also learn the production from the harvest, the storage in wine barrels to finally ending up as a wine in a bottle. Visit the wine cellar built in 1880 by French architects – today’s historical monument and taste three different wines.

This morning, we drive into Torres del Paine National Park for adventure in a spectacular environment. This is a busy day of travelling and walking taking in unforgettable views of the Towers and exploring the eastern side of the park. Today, we visit Laguna Azul; from this glacial lagoon, we have one of the most beautiful views of the Torres peaks. We also visit the Rio Paine waterfall, which is located in a spectacular landscape overlooking the peaks of the famous Torres del Paine. Continue to Laguna Amarga for more breath-taking views before arriving at our hotel on the western side of the park.

Today, we enjoy one of the classic walks in the heart of the park. We’ll reach the starting point after a scenic drive in the park. The walk today is approximately 2.5 hours, and the terrain is fairly flat, with only one steeper part, but the incredible views of the Cuernos del Paine in front of you throughout make it worth it! We also visit the Salto Grande waterfall and continue along the shores of Lake Nordenskjöld until we arrive at the Cuernos viewpoint, with unforgettable views of the Torres Massif.

On the way back, we stop at the visitor centre to learn about the origin and history of the park. This afternoon is free to relax at the hotel or enjoy optional excursions in the area.

Another day in Torres del Paine National Park, this time to explore the western highlights including Grey Lake. This deep lake, fed by the glacier of the same name, is filled with icebergs which have splashed down from the massive ice flow. Weather permitting, today we join the Grey Glacier navigation, a three-hour boat excursion which takes us to Grey Glacier, the largest in Torres del Paine National Park. To get to the boat, we have a 1.25mi (2km) hike through lenga forest, crossing the Pingo River and to the tip of a narrow peninsula along the beach at the southern end of the lake.

We cruise up the Grey Lake toward the glacier, which reaches 30m (100ft) high and 3.7mi (6km) wide at its terminus. Pieces of ice both large and small regularly break off from the front of the glacier, falling into the water with a crack and a splash. It is a unique opportunity to get a close-up view of this amazing blue glacier. After the excursion, we’ll visit the Milodon Cave on our way back to our hotel in Puerto Natales, arriving around 5.30pm.

Transfer to Puerto Natales Airport and fly to Puerto Montt, the capital of the Lake District. This is a long travelling day that will likely require an early start depending on the flight schedules.

On arrival in the Lake District, we drive for 30 minutes to Puerto Varas on the shores of Lago Llanquihue. Depending on flight arrival time, we can enjoy a brief tour of the City of the Roses, named for the tremendous variety of roses all over town. If we’re scheduled to arrive on a later flight, we recommend that you buy food at the airport as you may not have many options on arrival at the hotel.

Accommodation: Hotel Solace (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

Set out this morning for a full day inside the Lake District. We drive along the shore of Lago Llanquihue and enjoy breathtaking views of the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes. Our first real stop will be at the Saltos de Petrohue, where cooling lava from the Osorno Volcano formed a series of rapids and waterfalls. Together they create an impressive sculpture of extruded volcanic rock shaped by thousands of years of river flow.

At Petrohue, we board a boat for a short cruise of Lago Todos los Santos. The lake is surrounded by high mountains and the lower slopes are thickly forested. As we pull away from the landing and the source of the river Petrohue, the view is quickly stolen by the tremendous size and proximity of snow-capped Osorno Volcano behind us.

After our boat tour, we drive to the lower reaches of the immense Osorno volcano where we can hike in the lower lava fields of the volcano. We also visit the Green Lagoon (Laguna Verde) before we return towards Puerto Varas in the afternoon.

Please note, the order of the itinerary today may change depending on the weather conditions.

Accommodation: Hotel Solace (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

In the morning, we fly to Calama near the Atacama Desert, where we transfer to our hotel in the town of San Pedro de Atacama. After check-in, our tour leader offers a short orientation tour of the town for anyone who wants to join.

At dusk, we set out to the Valley of the Moon. This bizarre lunar landscape is set ablaze with colour at sunset, the strange rock formations framed by the Licancabur Volcano. We stay until the sun goes down to enjoy the array of colours before returning to San Pedro.

Depending on the flight times, this visit to the Valley of the Moon and the short orientation tour of the town might be moved to the following days instead.

Set off towards the Altiplano Lagoons (Lagunas Altiplánicas) and stop en route at the village of Socaire, set at 10,558ft (11,480ft/3,500m). The village is noteworthy for its peculiar rough-stonework architecture, and the inhabitants still live by age-old methods of planting terraced fields with corn, wheat and potatoes.

After, we continue for about another 19mi (30km), climbing an additional 3,281ft (1,000m) in altitude to reach the highland lagoons of Miscanti (14,270ft/4,350m) and Miñiques (13,450ft/4,100m). The two volcanoes of the same name are visible in the background (almost 19,686ft/6,000m high). The twin lagoons are a deep blue, each framed by a white salt crust, which creates a memorable contrast to the yellow highland grass all around. It is completely silent here. Even the duck species that breed here, the foxes, and the grazing vicuñas (a type of camelid), respect the majestic silence.

We then visit the Salar de Atacama. A salt lake of huge proportions (1,158 sqmi/3,000sqkm), it is covered by a thick layer of snow-white salt crystals, caused by the evaporation of the lake water. The largest lithium deposits in the world are found here, but the salt pan is also home to several flamingo species, including the Andean, Chilean and James, which feed on the micro-organisms in the saline lagoons. Look out for these beautiful birds and other species in their natural habitat at Chaxa Lagoon, which is part of the Reserva Nacional de los Flamencos. After the excursion, we return to San Pedro.

Please note, the order of the itinerary may change today.

Accommodation: Hotel Don Raul (or similar)

  • Meals included:Breakfast

We have to get up very early to arrive at the El Tatio Geysers, which are more than 14,108ft (4,300m) above sea level, in time for sunrise. The fountains, which can shoot up to 33ft (10m) high, occur when the morning sun melts the nightly ice caps that form over the hot springs. The first rays reflect an array of colours as they mix with boiling geyser jets to create strong contrasts of steam and light.

Around midday, we return to San Pedro for some free time. Returning along the same route, accompanied by the Andes and their volcanoes, we will make a short stop on the way at the Putana wetland, where we can observe different species of birds in front of the Colorado volcano. There is an optional astronomy tour tonight that highlights the southern sky. This excursion should be booked in advance of departure as availability is limited and does not operate during full moon. Please speak to your sales representative if interested.

Hotels

The regionally inspired three-star hotels selected for our Discover Chile trip ensure we are comfortable, as our wide-ranging adventure takes us from the cosmopolitan Santiago, through the wilds of Patagonia in the far south, into German-styled Puerto Varas in the Lake District, and to the Atacama Desert in the north. Below are the hotels we typically use.

Upgrade your room on Day 1, 2, 3, 6 and 12 of this itinerary – speak to your sales representative for more details.

Santiago: Panamericana Hotel Providencia (nights 1, 2 and 12)

Discover Chile

The Panamericana Hotel Providencia offers a blend of classical and contemporary décor in the upscale neighborhood of Providencia. It has spacious rooms, a swimming pool, fitness center, and variety of culinary options. It is also conveniently near the metro station, Mapocho River walk and Sky Costanera.

Puerto Natales: Hotel Lady Florence Dixie (nights 3 and 6)

Hotel Lady Florence Dixie is located in the centre of Puerto Natales, located just two blocks from the Plaza de Armas. The interior is simple, but comfortable.

Torres del Paine: Hosteria Pehoe (nights 4 and 5)

Patagonian Highlights

Hosteria Pehoe is on an island in the middle of Lake Pehoe in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. The unique spot offers stunning views of the lake and the Cuernos mountain peaks – cameras at the ready. Aside from the incredible photographic opportunities, this small hotel has a lounge, dining room, and a bar where you can take in the majesty of Patagonia.

Puerto Varas: Hotel Solace (nights 7-8)

Perfectly integrated into the townscape with architecture typical for the region, the Solace is just a few steps from the centre of Puerto Varas and Llanquihue Lake. The rooms have beautiful views: some onto the lake, some onto the surrounding volcanoes, and others towards the church of Puerto Varas.

San Pedro de Atacama: Hotel Don Raúl (nights 9-11)

The Hotel Don Raúl, nestled in the historic centre of San Pedro de Atacama, offers an ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding area. Embracing the traditional adobe architecture characteristic of this charming desert town, the hotel provides a unique and authentic experience. Nearby, guests can find a variety of bars and restaurants, while the hotel’s own cozy restaurant, Agua Loca, serves up culinary delights for those wishing to dine in.

Worth knowing

  • The front desk staff will request your passport and tourist card. This is mandatory as the hotel needs to take a copy of both documents to provide the VAT exemption for foreign tourists. Failure to provide this means you must pay the 19% VAT. They might also request your credit card as a guarantee for expenses not covered in your reservation.

Easter Island Add-on Tour

Discover Chile

In the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 2,485mi (4,000km) from the coast of Chile, is an island that still holds a special magic and mystery. Europeans landed on Rapa Nui, as the locals call it, on Easter Sunday and to this day it is known by many as Easter Island. So far from everything and everyone, isolated by the largest ocean in the world, it demonstrates a rich history, art and language. Amid friendly Polynesian hospitality, the island is an open‐air museum with approximately 900 moai (statues), the tallest of which is 68ft (21m) high.

The detailed itinerary can be found here, or speak to your sales representative for more details.

Essential Information

This trip is graded Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings please visit the Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.

This is a busy itinerary that visits the highlights of Chile. We travel by private minibus and take five internal flights to allow you to experience as much as possible of this beautiful and diverse country in a short time. As such, there are some long travelling days on this trip and several early starts. You should also be aware that we spend time at altitude in the Atacama.

Internal flights: Domestic flights are included, based on a set flight schedule and cost. Depending on flight availability at the time of booking, there may be a supplement to pay. If applicable, this will be communicated to you at the time of booking.

Grey Glacier Navigation: Please be aware that this activity is weather dependent. If it is not possible to navigate to the Grey Glacier by boat then an alternative activity will be arranged.

Key information

Start hotel: Panamericana Hotel Providencia, Francisco Noguera 146, Providencia, Santiago
Phone: +56 2 2863 2300
Recommended arrival time: You should arrive by 2pm. There is a welcome briefing in the evening, but if you miss it the leader will update you separately.
Airport: Santiago de Chile Airport (SCL)

Getting to the start hotel

The start hotel is approximately 20 minutes’ drive from the airport. Your options for this journey are:

Take an Exodus transfer

Exodus provides one group arrival transfer from the airport, which is timed to coincide with the arrival of a chosen flight from London, UK. You may join this transfer at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the group arrival transfer times or to arrange a private transfer.

Once you pass the customs check head to the exit. Due to the large number of people in arrivals area, you may not see your guide or driver at first sight holding an Exodus sign (you may have to check twice). Stay close to La Picá Restaurant (between Gates 3 & 4) if you do not find your guide (they will find you). Our drivers and tour guides always wait for guests with a corresponding Exodus sign.

Make your own way

If you do not take this transfer, or miss it, you must make your own way to the start hotel at your own expense. The taxi is likely to cost about 20,000-30,000 Chilean pesos (US$30-45) – you should not pay more than this.

Please be aware there is a taxi scam operating at Santiago Airport. Our on-the-ground partners have advised:

If the tour guide and guest do not meet at the airport, the guest should call our 24-hour emergency phone: +56-9 9883 7834. Guests should save this phone number on their mobile phone before they travel. The number is also accessible via WhatsApp on the free wifi at the airport.

Under no circumstances should clients accept phone calls from the taxi driver’s mobile phone. Also, the taxi ride should not be paid in cash to the driver. Our services are already paid. If our driver is not at the airport, guests should only book a taxi in the office of an authorized taxi company inside the airport building. If you would like further information on joining this trip, please speak to your sales representative.

Catching your return flight

There’s a group departure transfer to the airport for customers who Exodus booked onto a chosen flight to London, UK. Please speak to your sales representative if you wish to join. If the group departure transfer does not suit your flight time, speak to your sales representative to arrange an alternative transfer.

Chile

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Chile. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

Please note, a PDI tourist card will be given to you by migration at Santiago airport, upon arrival to Chile, and asked for upon departure from Chile (please retain this important slip of paper). The PDI certifies that you are a visitor and must be given back to migration upon departure from Chile.

All areas offer good quality local and international meals. Beef is very popular in Chile, especially steak, and most dishes tend to be quite meaty. In Patagonia, lamb is the most popular meat. There is also delicious, freshly caught fish and seafood in areas closer to the coast. Service can be slow in restaurants.

Vegetarian food is available in many of the restaurants, but options may be limited, especially in Patagonia. Please inform us before departure of any special dietary requests.

Worth knowing

  • If we need to leave the hotel before the restaurant opens for breakfast due to an early flight or excursion, no full breakfast will be served (some might offer a box breakfast to go but this is not obligatory).

Chile is in the southern hemisphere, so our trips run between October and March, to take advantage of the longer, warmer days in the rather brief summer period. During these months, temperatures in Santiago reach a maximum of 35C (95F), while in Puerto Montt they are more likely to be around 20C (68F). Patagonian summers tend to be dry although rain cannot be ruled out, particularly in the mountainous regions along the Chile-Argentina border where you might experience all four seasons in one day! Patagonia is renowned for being windy…and sometimes very windy (dress accordingly and watch your step).

In Patagonia, the changing weather is part of the adventure; however, in extreme wind/weather conditions our Tour Leader may modify the days itinerary in favour of passenger safety.

As a certified B Corp, we’re on a mission to improve our social and environmental impact across all our adventures.

We do this through our innovative Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan.

This ‘nature positive’ approach is designed to help nature and communities thrive in harmony through practical solutions, such as reducing carbon and waste on our trips, supporting conservation projects through the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation, and rewilding 100 square metres for every Exodus traveller.

Discover Chile

This trip includes a few of our Citizen Science Departures. These special departures offer you the opportunity to be involved in the collection of freshwater samples during the trip. The environmental DNA information derived from this sample will contribute directly to the eBioAtlas; the world’s largest repository of flora and fauna species data, contributing to the conservation and restoration of biodiversity both locally and globally. To book onto one of these special departures, see the Dates & Prices tab. For more information on these departures and the eBioAtlas, click here.

A fortnight in Chile

Great holiday from start to finish. Varied itinerary - I felt as if we’d covered a lot of ground & gained a good insight into the various areas/culture etc of Chile.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the sun come up & from my bedroom window & shine on the mountains in Torres del Paine. It took my breath away.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Miguel was amazing. One of the best guides I’ve had anywhere in the world. He was very organised & made sure we were informed of the next days arrangements/timings the night before. Very knowledgeable on his country & imparted a lot of local knowledge as we travelled around. Nothing was too much trouble for him.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There were some very early mornings & long drives, although there are plenty of stops. There were 5 internal flights but these were well organised & we saw some fab scenery from the plane. The surroundings & amazing scenery make up for this.

From snow-capped mountain peaks, lakes, volcanoes, glaciers to the desert, Chile had so much to offer! We covered so much in 2 weeks. This trip is the perfect way to see the country and the main highlights. We managed to see to some key wildlife such as Condors, Guanacos, Viscacha,...

It's very hard to choose as every part of the trip was special! 1. Seeing the Flamingos in their natural habitat 2.Torres del Paine National Park, seeing the granite peaks covered in snow and the turquoise lakes to experiencing the sunrise from the hotel. Our hotel also had the perfect view sitting on lake pehoe, I think we will always remember taking our luggage across the bridge to the hotel, this was a unique experience! Getting close up with the Glaciers, this was my first encounter and the colour was simply magnificent! 3. Atacama Desert - from the Geyser at sunrise to the seeing the milky way and seeing the whole of Scorpion constellation was truly memorable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Miguel was fantastic! He was always on hand for any questions we had about Chile. He suggested which restaurants to eat at and joined us on our dinners suggesting the best local dish to try. Miguel was incredibly useful at the airports for all the internal flights, we literally did not have to worry about doing anything from checking in to adding our luggage tags, he was the pro. He knew the right timing to get to the sites so we had it to ourselves such as the hike in Patagonia (we were the only ones on the trail) to seeing the Flamingos (the crowds were leaving as we arrived so we were able to enjoy the landscape peacefully). Some people in the group were not able to get onto the stargazing tour and Miguel was kind enough to take them to view the stars in San Pedro with his torch, he had an astronomy app on his phone and was able to point out the constellations. He went above and beyond as he didn't have to do that! Our whole group said we would be very lost without him which goes to show how great he is!

Advice for Potential Travellers

- Bring good thermals, waterproof jackets, waterproof shoes as the weather changes very quickly, it can get rainy, windy, sunny and chilly (don't mind the pun!) in Patagonia and early mornings in the Atacama desert. - Walking poles for Torres del Paine - Bring a mask or scarf to cover your face for the Moon of Valley as it can get - A few early starts and internal flights but that's the best way to see Chile as it's such a long country

Enjoyable trip

An enjoyable trip and you do cover vast distances but for a 13 day trip too much time is spent hanging around in airports. I note that the itinerary has been tweaked for 2025 so this may help a bit. One word of warning for solo travellers (apart from the...
