I would love to hear from anyone going on this trip

Tue, 08/06/2013 - 12:46

Myself (Emily) and husband (Lee) are on this trip - getting really excited now.  Are you flying from Heathrow?

Tue, 08/06/2013 - 20:52

Hi, my name's Carmen,

Yes, i'm flying from Heathrow 8pm, you too? I'm pretty nervous as i'm going on this trip alone, sure i'm not the only one. Have you been on these trips before?

Be good to meet others on this trip at the airport.

Wed, 08/07/2013 - 11:37

Hi, great to meet you.

I've been on one other Exodus trip to Cuba which was fantastic, and there was a few single travellors on that one, so I'm sure there will be similar on this one too.  It didn't really matter to be honest, as everyone was very like minded, and got on really well - hopefully this trip will be too.

Yes, we're flying from Heathrow too, so we could arrange to meet up somewhere.   I've just seen on the news that Nairobi airport has had a massive fire this morning.  Will have to wait and see whether that affects us at all.

Wed, 08/07/2013 - 13:17

Hi Emily, good to hear back from you, hopefully by the time we go the airport will be fully operational. I heard there are 18 of us altogether going on this trip, of mixed ages, i'm a young 55, moderately fit, although i'm a smoker! Hope i'm not the only one!  Be good to meet at the airport, you won't be able to miss me- i'll be covered in nicotine patches from head to toe!!

Fri, 08/09/2013 - 11:07

Hi - Nairobi airport seems to be back up and running - hurray!  Two weeks today... cant believe its nearly here.  I'll be amazed if I manage to do any work between now and then.

Sat, 08/10/2013 - 10:17

Hi, i'm getting quite excited now, it seems to have come about all of a sudden, two weeks today we should be at our first campsight, looks like a gentle intruduction, before we're get into "real camping" begins!  Think i've pretty much got all my kit together, just wondering about the clothes front, i've got to re-think, cos they say no bright colours on saffari and i tend to wear "bright"!

Sun, 08/11/2013 - 10:28

Hi Emily, Lee and Carmen,

We are travelling to London from Dublin next week, very excited to be going on another adventure!! Any updates on Nairobi airport? We are also on that 8pm flight with you (haven't received our tickets yet, do you have yours?)

Lynsey and Andrew.

Hi all,

We got our "final instructions" email a couple of weeks ago, which had flight details on it.  I think it is electronic tickets, so you just need your passport at the airport.  I contacted Exodus last week to reserve seats, which they have now done for us (I'm a bit of a window hogger!).

Was talking to a friend last week about what to wear for the gorilla trekking (such a girly question), as they have just got back from Rwanda, and they said make sure you wear long trousers and top, as there are fire ants.  They said - lightweight, quick drying clothes are best, along with gaitors, and gardening gloves if you have them.  We're taking walking boots too, just in case its really muddy etc.

Haven't really given much thought to anything else, but may go and stock up on some more t-shirts this week.

Nairobi airport apparently is back up and running, but we'll probably experience delays at immigration.

Mon, 08/12/2013 - 19:40

hi all,
don't like the sound of fire ants! gaiters, good idea, must get some. can you reccomend a travel pillow? too many to choose from on line, i can't decide, i've got a cheapy for the plane.
I wonder just how chilly it will be in the evenings and at night and early morning, wondering how many warm clothes to pack, prob light layers may be best.
like you Emily, i've booked my seat, i like an isle seat.
Hope i'm not the only singleton on this trip or the only smoker!! or the oldest!

Tue, 08/13/2013 - 07:58

I'm off to Blacks at lunchtime to have a look at blow up pillows - haven't a clue whats available, or at what cost!  I was planning on taking layers, and then fleece and body warmer too for the evenings.  Not entirely sure how I'm going to fit all of this into my rucksack.  I'll probably end up wearing half of my stuff on the plane - I'll be the one looking like the Michelin man!

Tue, 08/13/2013 - 13:36

I've ordered some vacuum bags in the hope to be able to sqeeze everything in my bag, and to keep things in order, this was suggested by my daughter who's travelled. I think i'll look like the michelin man too!
Just remembered the waterproof jacket. My bag's pretty full just with the sleeping bag and all the first aid stuff and travel towel, I may have to get a bigger rucksack!
It was suggested in the info to bring snacks, wondering whether to get them there, havn't a clue what sort of things we'll be able to get there.
I've ordered my camping pillow, i went for one with the best reviews, i'll try it out beforehand. Oh blimey, got to take toilet rolls! i'll definately have to get a bigger bag!!

Happy packing!

Wed, 08/14/2013 - 08:25

hi all,
It has been decided for me to get a bigger bag - woke this morning to find my beloved car peeing in my half packed rucksack!! Don't think I would be very popular with whover i'll be sharing a tent with! luckily I had the contents in sealed bags.
If my cat has any sense she'll be in hiding!

Wed, 08/14/2013 - 15:16

wow - thats an excuse to go shopping I've never heard of before!  Maybe the cat knows you're about to leave her for a while.  Probably a good idea to get a new bag - you dont want to run the chance of the smell of cat pee attracting the slightly bigger cats they have in Africa...

Wed, 08/14/2013 - 19:50

Oh, I hadn't thought of it attracting the big cats! definately getting a new one, although I have sprayed it with antibac and spread a load of jostiks inside (unlit!)
I'm getting rather nervous especially as one of my daughters' keeps reminding me of the insects we may encounter! she's just jealous!
Just hope I pack all the right stuff.

Happy packing!

Sun, 08/18/2013 - 23:38

Became very real last weekend when we took out our gear from previous trips, now have a big pile on top of our bags that needs to be culled, then culled some more! It's only two weeks so I want to travel light!

Sun, 08/18/2013 - 23:43

Ohh regarding the gorilla hike, definitely hiking boots as the terrain can be tough (thing crawling through a bamboo grove or down a steep slope) then plan for all seasons hot and humid with maybe rain and cold when it comes... But it'll warm up again fast and the trip highlights will outstrip any discomfort ;-)

Mon, 08/19/2013 - 08:38

4 working days to go...I am now SO excited.  Think I'm going to be unbearable this week!  Started to get all our stuff together this weekend - seems we have a lot of different temperatures to deal with, so stratgic packing, and definately using compression bags.  One question for you - are you planning on taking dollars or sterling?  If we can get away with sterling, that would be fab...

Do you want to meet in the departures bit?  I think we are planning on getting to the airport between 5.30 and 6ish, so should be through customs etc by 6.30ish.

Mon, 08/19/2013 - 19:06

Hi all,
I think i've just about got all my stuff together. I haven't bothered with gaiters, they're so expensive, but I reckon with socks over trousers should keep any ants etc.out!
My son has kindly lent me his beloved rucksack, so the cat pee scented one is redundant! it's 70kls so I should get everything in.
My camping pillow arrived, it's very small! i'll try it out and see how it is. I'm taking dollars.

Be good to meet you guys in the departure lounge, have to figure a way of recognition.
Good luck packing!

But I am worried about parking my car on Manchester airport. I just found a Manchester airport meet greet parking. So can any body guide me this company is okay or not?

Besides having their all economic instruments and facts for future predictions, they seem helpless to make a good plan for coming crises. Queen of England asked the same question to the economist.
