Kilimanjaro Trip August 22nd

I am Stuart. My friend, Malcolm, and myself ahve just booked Kilimnajaro for the 21st August. 

I am really excited (and a little bit nervous) about it!


 I  Just wondered if anyone else had booked this trip.

Hello all.  2 more booked on this trip...we're at least 7 now as in December I was told there was only 1 booked.

I did the Inca Trail a couple of years back and was a bit underprepared with walking day in day out so am planning on going to Snowdon/Peak District at some point when the weather warms up a bit for a bit of training. What's everyone's training regime likely to consist of?

Hi all. Anita here (Kirstens friend). I'm looking at some new boots to buy for the trek (Berghaus explorer trek) but don't know whether to go one or two sizes bigger than my usual size. Any ideas?

How's the training going? Kirsten and I are avid runners, so are relatively fit, however we need to seriously buckle down and start doing some proper hill climbs. Hoping to make some trips to wales and possibly the Peak District also. Looking forward to meeting you all.

Hi everyone,

Anita and I are getting a little inquisitive and wondering where you all live and how your prep is going for the trek? We are starting to get pretty excited now!

We live in Exeter, Devon and have done a few walks on the South West Coast path this week. Although I wasn't feeling the love for it in the wind and rain today!! But it's all good practice and hopefully Spring will arrive soon!

I havent done any training yet!!! I am quite a keen runner too and hoping that this will help, but like you I know I should be doing some walking / climbing!

Hi Stuart,

We are in the South, In Devon, a bit of a way from Aberdeen!

We are hiring sleeping bags and sleeping mats but apart from that I have got my own kit or borrowing a few things as well. I am also a runner but have started to walk at weekends, although not the distance/time that we will be doing for Kili.

Starting to get real now. :) Stuart has sent me on the link to the forum page as I had misplaced it. Was watching a few of the video clips last night and saw the ceremony farewell song they sing.

Anita - did you get your boots ok? Sounds like you two have already been ok walking so believe you have that all sorted. :)

Andrew - The Inca trail is another one I would really like to see along with EBC.... Looking forward to hearing about it in the group talks, after our day’s walk up Kili.

From what I have heard the day of reaching the summit and/or the day before that, are the hardest and mostly due to the altitude but those people had taken the trips that did it in less days, so I am happy that we are on the longer Lemosho route. :)  All down to Stuart’s time spent researching when it counted. :)

I havent got my Visa yet and intended to get it at the Airport. Have you heard of any reason not to do this or is there an advantae to getting it before departure?

Ive been out for a few walks with Malcolm now in preperation. We are trying to do a shorter walk one evening through the week and a longer walk at the weekend. I am hoping this will be enough.

I havent had any blisters in my new boots yet so I am quite chuffed with that :)

I am trying to decide which kit to buy vs rent just now. I have bought a Rab Summit jacket but I am not sure whether to spend the money on a sleeping bag or rent it. I am jsut not sure I will use it again!

Has everyone else got all their kit sorted?

I have emailed Exodus and they say to get the Visa at the airport, I do know someone who did the trek last year and they got theirs in advance.

Good news about your boots, obviously a good buy! I am walking twice a week, same as you by the sounds of it, but running a couple of times as well.  How far are you going on your long walks?

 We are renting sleeping bags and ground mats, apart from that I have got everything now apart from maybe a new pair of socks. Just working my way through the injections!

Well the bank balance is a lot lighter today but I guess that we are definitely going now!


Kirsten, We seam to be managing about 14km on a Thursday night and about 20km on a Saturday. I have to be honest and say that while the walking is fine I dont think I would ever do it for a regular weekly excercise. It is just so time consuming compared to running :)

I watched the Comic Relief Kili challenge again last night just to see if I could pick up any hints on clothes, temperatures etc. I notice they didnt wear their heavy gear until right at the top (i.e. last day) but I dont know how edited that was.

I also noticed that Chris Moyles (a smoker) didnt have  a problem with altitude fitness. I have also heard so many times that the fitest people often struggle with the oxygen depletion.

I think that I should maybe sit on the couch for the next 8 weeks and do no more training :).


I am a bit concerned about the amount of kit that I plan to take vs weight limit but I guess it will be fine on the day.Has anyone else weight any of their gear?

 I am probably doing about the same distances walking as you. You are right though, it does take a lot of time!

I havent seen the comic relief programme, is it worth watching? I have borrowed 'Kilimanjaro - The trekking guide to Africas highest mountain' by Henry Stedman. Its really good and has details of each days walk.

I didnt realise that about altitude sickness, darn it! I thought being as fit as possible would be helpful, pie & chips from now on in it is then!lol!

 I havent weighed any luggage yet but probably should do. It is suggested that we wear a complete set of what we need for the trek on the flight over, in case your luggage gets lost.

 I must admit I am not really preparing. Am going to the gym for some cardio training (besides the normal classes), but else I haven't done anything. We went for a long walk in Richmond Park and my new hiking boots did well, no blisters ;-)

We are renting sleeping bags and sleeping matts. That's all. For the rest I am hoping dressing in layers will do ;-)

I haven't weighted my luggage yet, first I need to buy the snacks etc that will keep me going - he he. Will definitely be at the limit...

Are you doing a national park tour before the trek begins? I understood one can book it in Arousha... Am thinking about doing that.

Sounds like everyone is pretty fit already with all this mention of running, fitness classes and gym etc! My practice walks have been slipping this past month due to work etc so need to get back on track, so I can keep up with all of you. :) Fingers crossed my not smoking does not increase my chances of the altitude sickness. :)


I like the tip of carrying (or wearing) on the plane a set of trek clothes in case of missing luggage. The travel clinic (for the yellow fever injection also recommended a double set of any medication, 1 set in the hand luggage, for the same reason.


What snacks are you thinking of taking and how much? Hopefully the meals will be big enough that a snack would be all that it is, or do you know more?


Have not been thinking about any additional tours (like the national park tour) and maybe should be. Have really just been focussing on the trek but should make the most of the experience like you are.

Hi Malcolm,

 Don't worry - I should do more practicing but to be honest I always find something more exciting to do. ;-) Re snacks I was more thinking of little treats/ sweets to keep me going - he he. From what I have heard the meals there are plentyful and delicious!

Good tip about the double set of medication, will keep that in mind. Also, one of my friends recommended to pack everything in those vacuum plastic bags. It makes space in your bag and keeps your stuff dry in case it's raining etc...

I checked the itinerary the other day if we had any time for this day trip to the national park, but it seems pretty busy. I'll speak to the team again and check. But I am going to Zanzibar afterwards as well, so it wouldn't be too bad if I couldn't do that.

It sounds like the meals are substantial and they provide snacks as well I think. I am planning to take my own as well though just in case and so I know I like them!

I have bought some Trek protein bars in bulk from their website for an afternoon snack each day. They are what I have been eating when I have been doing m training walks. They are higher in protein than normal cereal bars/flapjacks and recommended for walking. They of flapjacks and the protein bars, I tried both but think the protein bars are better for their content and that they don't melt which one of the others did when I was walking last weekend!

I'm not doing any additional excursions due to time, money and that I go back to work the day after we fly home! That's going to be a shock to the system!

Hi,Thanks for the reassurances. :) It is good to hear that the food is tasty and plentiful. I was thinking that maybe half of my weight allowance would need to be snacks. ;) I must see if I can find the protein bars on their website and they sound good to have.Vacuum bags make sense too instead of buying dry bags.I have maybe been thinking about this for too long as the list of things I would like to take is far too long. :) Now trying to cut it back to a more realistic list of what is needed not nice to have..... I have weighed a few of the items and it quickly adds up. Looks like I might be wearing my boots on the plane to save having to carry them. :)I am back to work straight away as well. :(I was hearing from a friend, that did the walk about 5 yrs ago (not Exodus), and he said the summit day’s downhill bit was like going down a dried river bed and was a bit tricky and the toughest section/day for him. The poles were helpful to him on the way down but he did not use them much on the way up.Have put off buying some of the little items, like water purification, but I really need to get my act together now and get everything together.Work and life has been getting in the way of training lately and I really must get back in to it and go out and do a walk this weekend! Training time is running out.  ;) Unlike Stuart I do not do 12 fitness classes and 60km a week. :)

Can't quite believe it is one month today that we fly out!

Let me know if you need a link to their website or aren't sure which bars I am talking about. I am planning on starting to lift things out over the next week or so to check what I have/haven't got. And then weigh it all!

I used poles on my walk today.....they were a pain in the arse to be honest! I ended up just carrying them most of the time then gave up half way and attached them to my rucksack. I guess I will take them out there but am not completely sure. Is anyone else taking poles?

It was a bit too hot walking today and I left fairly early. I was thinking about kit and only taking one of each length of layer, but after how hot I got today I'm not sure the clothes would last a week! But I'm sure how much I smell will be the least of my worries!!lol!

Marta said we don't need purification tablets as the porters boil all the water. I got through 2&1/2 litres over 8miles today and still had a few miles to go but I think that was just because it was so hot. I haven't drunk that much up until now.

Your probably right about clothes and it is not as if there will be hot showers available every day so wearing the same thing a few times is not likely to make that much a difference. ;)


Found an interesting Exodus post on what someone recommends to take. In it they recommended 2 long sleeve tops.  Scroll down to near the bottom and you will find the post with the info.


Please share the name and link for the protein bars. I took Kellogs Nutri-grain breakfast bars on my walk yesterday and they were good but not going to take them on the trek as they would be a bag of crumbs by the end of day 2.

Don't get the protein flapjack, they are nice but do go a bit soft & squidgy in the heat! The Trek protein bar is better nutritionally and is more solid. You can buy them individually in some supermarkets/Holland & Barrett so you could try one first. On the website you can buy a mixed of of the 3 flavours, they do free p&p and I think if I recommend you you would get 10% off so let me know if anyone wants to do that!

The link to the Exodus post is really useful. I think I have got most of the kit, just need to get another pair of socks and stock up on hand warmers. I really suffer with cold hands and then loose the use of them which is a nightmare! I tried the hand warmers on one walk and they were great.

Hello everyone! I am planning on buying the energy/ protein bars in Holland & Barrett. I had a look around yesterday and they seem to have quite an assortment... I'll also take mini bags of Haribo - can't go without it and I need a treat ;-) Re the walking poles: I was contemplating for quite a while too and ordered some on Friday. If I don't need it I will just put it in my backpack... I´ve got a doctor's appointment tomorrow to get my yellow fever vaccination, and will then also ask for Diamox. I might not need it, who knows?, but want to have it just in case... How do you weigh your stuff?? Have you also received the duffel bag? So exciting! It's quite big. Just to let you know (not sure if I have mentioned it earlier), that I called Exodus and they said the sleeping bag must go into the duffel bag (but not the sleeping matt)! I went to boots earlier this morning, they have baby wipes 3 for 1 GBP. Three packs should be plenty :-) I also want to bring some cards, have you got mini games that do not take up much space? I start to look forward to it now. :-)

I have checked with Marta and the first aid guide carries Diamox should anyone needs it. I don't think I'm going to take my own prescription out there. I checked with someone I know who climbed Kili a couple of years ago and neither her nor her partner took it. I am a bit worried that the side effects are the same as the symptoms of altitude sickness so how would you know which is which!!
I picked my kit bag up yesterday, very exciting although now trying to figure out what bag to take in the plane to out it and all my stuff in! I have borrowed a suitcase weighing thing so hopefully that will give an idea of how much my bag weighs when I practice pack it. Thanks for the heads up that the sleeping bag goes into the kit bag.
I don't have any games but am going to ask around.

I'll take a suitcase for the flight and put my duffel bag/ backpack in there and will only pack my bag over there. I'll go to Zanzibar afterwards, so need a few more things and we can leave the suitcase at the hotel... Good point with Diamox... I also heard that not many people took it and some were really sick after taking it... I looked up 4 season sleeping bags yesterday in online shops, they all weigh around 1.5-1.8kg... The trip must come around now soon, otherwise I go mental with my "preparation" - he he. Looking forward to meeting all of you!

I am taking Diamox with me. I dont know if I am going to use it but I am going to take some before to see the side effects.

I spoke to my doctor about it and he advised that I take it just in case.

 I had my yellow fever yesterday and got my little booklet / certificate for my passport (dont know if you need it but I'll take it anyway).

Ive also picked up my Mallarone (spelling?) Malayria tablets.


I have done very little training recently as I am just so busy in work and home life but I am hoping to get out for a walk with Malcolm this weekend.


I am getting excited now - only 3 weeks to go!

I've just been googling 'Ginkgo biloba' as an alternative to takin Diamox, there has been some research showing that I can make a difference but I don't think it's widely recognised or taken. I haven't figured out what form or where t get it!

I have got my Malarone as well, now just need to remember to take it!

I went for a short walk yesterday with a new pair of walking socks and they rubbed my sock liner and gave me blisters! Gutted!......won't be wearing them again!

Hi all, Seems everybody is as fed up with the training and just wants to get on with it!  This has been the longest in the planning!  I’m doing my last practice hikes back to back this weekend, then It’s just the usual gym/run/swim routine till we go.  Have read so many blogs now to try and gage what to take.  I’m as prepared as I can be I guess.   

I have everything I need, had my yellow fever jab just in case they insist on it upon entry.  I doubt the porters at the end will get much donated clothing from me as most is new.  I am taking Diamox, have malarone and antibiotics from the doctor just in case.  Only thing I’m hiring is the sleeping mat which the porters carry.  I think 15kg is ample even with a sleeping bag (i'm taking my own down bag).  Inca Trail we only got 7kg!  For those wavering with walking poles, take them.  Every person I’ve spoken to and every blog read, says going down is really really hard on the knees/feet and the poles will help.  Am just taking US$ and will use that for tipping the porters at the end etc.

 Will meet you all out there as we’re not on the group flights and arriving a day earlier.

I had my yellow fever vaccination yesterday. Interestingly, my doctor advised against Diamox... I will rely on you or the porters to have some then ;-) Got my malaria tablets as well...

What flights are you guys on? I am not sure if we are on the group booking, as we have extended our trip to Zanzibar... We fly out on 21 Aug with Kenia Air at 17.10 from LHR via Amsterdam, Nairobi to Kili Airport.

Nice idea to donate your clothes at the end (it was mentioned in the forum for a trek in July), but I bought most of it new, so will definitely keep it.

It's just me now as my friend isn't doing it anymore. I am on the 20.00 from Heathrow.

I also have bought mainly new kit, and i think my clothes would be a bit small for the porters! I am trying to find some old kit from my Dad and friends to take out if I have any room!

How much is everyone taking for the tips? I haven't quite worked it out yet.

I'm aiming for the $175-200pp mark as per the trip notes.  Without them we'll have no chance of making it to the top so providing they're as good as everyone says, that's my aim.  You'll also need crips US$ for the VISA so don't take crumbled/written bills.  Make sure they're crisp!

Shame you're friends not going anymore but it should be a good group dynamic hopefully so don't worry about that.  No idea about age or demographics of anyone so it'll be interesting when we all get out there.

Kirsten, that's a shame that your friend cancelled... But I'm sure you will not be the only one travelling "on your own", and it won't make a difference in the group anyway.

By pure coincidence a friend of a friend of mine, who also lives in Exeter, is one the same trek! We met briefly last week so I will recognise someone at the airport!
As far as I know there are 4 female travellers and 9 male.

I was looking at feedback on the Exodus website for the Lemosho route, there were a few tips I hadn't thought of but some of you probably have!
Nail brush & some girls took Ugg boots or equivalent for the evenings at the camp as they are comfy and warm. I don't have Uggs but have some similar although they are too new too take out there! I might look in somewhere like Shoe Express in case they have some cheap ones

I think it's time to start the count down in days isn't it?!!!!!

Trust the ladies to manage to twist the trip to be about shoes! ;)

I wish I got tips, on top of my earnings, of approx 20 to 25 percent of my nations average annual wage every week or 2, even if it was split between 3 or 4. ;)

Andrew - not sure how you managed 7kg for the Inca Trail! Do you just wear the same set of clothes for the whole trip? Sounds like you are a seasoned pro at this type of thing. ;)

I would hate to break the stereotype, even if we are climbing a mountain! Maybe I should admit at this point that a few items of my kit are pink! it was just the way the cookie crumbled.....honest! Incidentally I got a pair of the boots from Shoe Zone for £10, although have now thought that my feet will be sweltering for the first few evenings but hey ho!!

7kg is pretty much what my day pack weighed when I went for a walk today, although that was with 3 litres of water. I weighed it just out of curiosity. That is impressive for a whole trek!

I decided that today was my last long walk, my legs are tired now so it's time to rest up. Wonder how we will all be feeling 2 weeks today!

2 fires at Airports today both of which are part of Myself and Malcolms itinerary! Nairobi and Aberdeen.

Hopefully being 2 weeks out the Nairobi shouldnt affect any of us.

Re socks: I have one pair of thin liner socks. Will also take two pairs of hiking socks and one pair of my skiing socks...

Yes, read about the fire. I hope everything is up and running again in two weeks, otherwise we might get a new flight schedule ;-) Guess we are all flying via Nairobi...

I bought enery and protein bars at the weekend, they alone weigh a bit more than 1kg! Eek! I don't dare yet to put everything on one pile to see how much stuff I have, will try to avoid this shock as long as I can...

Have you received your e-tickets yet? It says we should receive it 2-3 weeks before the trip...

Do you fly to London from Aberdeen and then on the same flight as some of us?

I got the email from Exodus on Monday with all the final info and flight number etc.

I started to lift my kit out yesterday but haven't weighed it yet, a bit worried about doing do!!

Yes we fly down from Aberdeen about 3 oclock.

Its normally just over an hour.


I still have things to buy - I really need to get my final order in.


My back pack arrived today along with a hat and gloves that I ordered. The hat is not pink but judging by the reaction of others it would get less looks if it was :)

Just called Exodus and now I also have received my final instructions.

I think I have everything now, except from plasters - that's still on my shopping list. It was a bit frustrating, as my list got longer and longer. But now all should be sorted.

Btw: international flights from/to Nairobi airport are operating again. Phew ;-)
