Just trying to connect with anyone joining the Indochina & Angkor trip on January 27th.

I am flying from Toronto on January 23rd and taking a few days to chill and tour Bangkok before joining you at the airport on Sunday morning.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Hi Catherine

We are also travelling to Bangkok on 23 January, arriving on the 24th and staying a few days before the tour starts.  We are staying at the Nouvo City Hotel, 2 Samsen 2, Samsen Road, Pranakorn, Banglamphu, Bangkok 10200 which is where we are meeting the tour guide at 9am on the Sunday morning.  We also have a Canadian friend, who we met on our last cycling holiday, who is also joining this tour and we are meeting up with him at the Nouvo City Hotel.

We would be pleased to meet up with you, once we have got over our jet lag on the first day.  Whereabouts are you staying?

Catherine, Frances and Roger,

Arriving in Bangkok 25th Jan and also staying at the Nuovo City Hotel before the tour starts. Seems sensible to recover from the journey and have at least a little time in Bangkok before the exertions begin. Hoping to be "saddle ready" by 27th but here in Yorkshire the weather is turning wintry. We may need to resort to the exercise bike or just hope that last year's fitness will be good enough! Looking forward to meeting you all.

Hi everyone,

Great to hear from you!

I am staying at the Furama Silom for a couple of nights. Have arranged to meet some friends, and we have some serious sightseeing and temple tours planned... hopefully after recovering from jet lag and a 12 hour time difference. I transfer over to the Nouvo Hotel on Saturday, and it would be lovely to meet up with you then? I haven't been on my bicycle since the end of October. Having just dug ourselves out of two massive and successive snowfalls of 30 and then another 20 centimeters, with bitterly cold temperatures of -20. Today it is +3, raining and snow melting fast! stationary bike at the Gym is as good as it gets for now.

I am wondering if any of you have opted for anti malarials?

Hello Everyone,

Looking forward to the trip and to meeting you.

You asked about anti-malarials, Catherine.  We researched and dithered for ages, but in the end decided we would go with them.  I expect you've had similar advice to us:  the risk of malaria throughout most of the tour is nil to very low, but for the border regions of Thailand to Cambodia, and Cambodia to Vietnam the risk is medium to high.  We're pretty good at not getting bitten so were prepared to go armed with repellants etc for those two nights.  However, we then spoke with a friend who is a public health consultant to developing countries, and who regularly travels in S.E.Asia.  She said she wouldn't take any risk since the strain of malaria there is particularly unpleasant and resistant to treatment.  We have now decided to take doxycycline from Sa Keaw onwards.  The alternative was Malarone - a shorter course, but quite expensive.

Hoping that's useful.  Apologies for starting a holiday by talking about sickness - I'm sure we'll all have a great time with or without tablets!

See you soon.
