A fantastic week in the mountains

I went on the Grade 5 (Challenging) week in early September. This was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding week in all respects – the hotel, the food, the scenery, and the superb guide Alvaro. Of the 3 Exodus trips I’ve been on, this was my favourite, for 2 main reasons. 1 – Jim and Pilar who run the Hotel Torrecerredo go out of their way to make you feel at home, as do the other staff their. They explicitly said we should treat the hotel as our home for the week and their warmth and friendliness, as well as their relaxed attitude to guests coming and going, popping into the kitchen to ask something, relaxing on the terrace, or making themselves tea when they wanted it, really did make it feel like home. Reason 2 is the guide Alvaro, who for me was the ideal group leader.

Most Inspirational Moment

There are several! Reaching the twin peaks of Mancondiu and traversing between them on an exposed ridge which was exhilarating and fun with incredible views. Completing the 24km Cares Gorge walk which was incredible throughout. Making the long descent into Bulnes down an ancient Roman path, and having a cold beer at the bottom. Seeing chamois running across the rocks on the descent on the last day. Seeing a rare wallcreeper on the rocks near the Mancondiu peaks.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent in all respects. Alvaro was sensitive to the differing needs of a varied group, which I can appreciate is no easy task especially on the Challenging weeks. He was extremely supportive and encouraging if people were struggling and displayed a rare sensitivity and empathy for which he should be commended. He also truly brought the region to life for us by telling us about the history, politics, religious traditions, flora and fauna, and cuisine of Asturias, always guided by the interests of the group! I have never met a group leader who is so attentive to the group as individuals, recognising everyone as different in their abilities, needs, and interests and responding to them in light of this. Thank you for a wonderful week in the mountains Alvaro,

Advice for Potential Travellers

The Challenging Week is indeed challenging so if you do not walk regularly you should do some dedicated preparation for this trip. The walks are up to 24km and can involve ascents and descents of over 1000m. You will be well supported but for your own comfort and enjoyment should ensure you have a good level of fitness and stamina if you're taking the grade 5 trip.

Rainy Season

Good to see the country but not my favourite. I think I might have fall too much in love with the relative remoteness and untourist nature of Patagonia and the Galapagos Islands. Costa Rica has embrassed tourism and while it ‘sells itself’ as eco orientated I was left unconvinced. I think the animals and birds are disappearing, at least moving away from where the humans are. We toured a lot of the country on unmade roads which was a good part of the adventure, travelling from the swamps, to volcanoes, to rainforest, to the coast, the jungle and the mountains. We did see a lazing sloth in a tree by the road and hummingbirds defying any attempt to be photographed with their speed and agility. There were some nice touches, the trip the school and the homstead in the mountains.

Most Inspirational Moment

Most amazing thing were the tropical storms, rain and thunder for hours! And the monkey's swinging in the trees and maybe also the jungle humidity. The humidity was invariably described as 100% humidity which I imagine means the equivalent of having a bucket of water thrown over you! I loved the jungle lodges near Golfito, falling off to sleep listening to the secadars, frogs and rain!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Gustavo. Alway professions, completely unflappable and incredibly knowledgable about flaura and forna.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you want to see birds don't go in the rainy season. The tropical storms were amazing but pack for humidity - you will be wet and everything you take with you will get damp. A couple of the hotels do not have pools... if swimming is important to you.

Inca Trail TPT

My first Exodus trip and would highly recommend it. Can’t wait to book my next one!

Most Inspirational Moment

After 4 days of trekking walking up towards and through the sun gate and looking out over Macha Picchu

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was excellent, he joined us in the evenings for dinner and advised us on what the best sites in Cusco are. Our tour guide on the trail was very knowledgeable and she made the trip for me

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do it, do it, do it! I was unsure about traveling in my own but if couldn't have been s better experience

Mongolia adventure 15th - 29th August

An exciting trip to a remote region of the world.
Met some wonderful people both on the trip and locals in the ger camps who are living the nomadic life still…..but with a few mod cons like satellite dishes and solar panels which drive the TV, twin tub and freezer box.. !!!
A real experience to see the open spaces of the steppes and the different landscapes, but realised that I only scratched the surface of it as Mongolia is such a vast country. I would definitely like to go back to see more.

Most Inspirational Moment

To sit under the vast star light skies with no noise or light pollution and to realise how very small you are and what a big world we live in. It helps to put things into perspective!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dorjo had a good heart and intentions but lacks both leadership and organisation skills. It is clear that this is a side line job because she can speak some English. But even this was a little difficult to understand at times. She also does not take an active part in pointing out things of interest along the journey to break it up. She did not seem to know as much about things as we had hoped and this resulted in very short answers and despite further questions revealed nothing more about the subject matter. So we read our guide books and shared fact between ourselves. She does not do it often enough to lead a group of professional people who have traveled the world. The fact that she is a ex teacher showed in how she thought that she could lead and organise us. We are not kids and don't want to be treated like one! She often avoid difficult situations by agreeing to something (to pacify us) then later changing her mind later on ....to our absolute frustration and fury! Eg, There only beer as the ger camps, and some of us wanted soft drinks, so we asked that on return from our mornings outing we could go into town (which was close by) to buy some... "Yes we could". Then when the time came we could not, "there is not enough time and it's too far!". Yet we spent the afternoon twiddling our thumbs in the ger camp. "Would we like sand boards to slide down the sand dunes"..."Yes we said"..... " I will organise that for you". The next day she told Marion she had considers overnight and it was too dangerous.... then when I asked where they were she said " I forgot!" and so this is how it went on the whole trip. Conflicting stories, changing the decision without consultation. Further e.g. Will there be hot water for a shower at any of the ger camps..."Yes, at the next ger camp"... but there wasn't. They forgot to put the stove on for the hot water!. "Can we have breakfast early and go to the dune in the early morning so can climb in the cool"..... "Yes, I will organise it for 7 am with the ger camp"..... but we all sat around for 20 - 30 mins at 7 am waiting for Dorjo and the people running the ger camp to get up, cook & serve breakfast ! Breakfast was hurried and late! Further e.g. There were times that we went out on a morning excursion and could have spent the whole day at the canyon, or rock painting, or monastary, but she rushed us back to the ger camp to sit with nothing to do. So rather than asking us if we would like to take picnic lunch out there and spend most of the day exploring and walking. We were taken back to the Ger camp for lunch then to sit about. There was no activities planned so we amused ourselves by going off walking. We all wanted to make the best use of our time in Mongolia ,so following long days of driving, we wanted to stretch our legs and take the opportunity to explore and walk when we could on the excursions, but this was curtailed. We were viewed as naught children because we laughed and joked with each other and had great banter between each other and the driver. We were even told we were like children! Her style of leadership and organisation is out dated,so although she was doing her best or what she knew, it was not up to the standards that I am use to or would expect from a guide. I like all the others on the trip have worked hard to earn my money to afford to take this trip ....I not some sort of spoil rich kid!. Yes, I have high standards expect of me at work and have feedback and coaching all the time to improve. I therefore expect high standards of those people leading the trip. I therefore would suggest that Karakorum Expeditions need to take seriously the feedback that I know a number of us on the trip made to them on their blue feedback forms we handed in to Dorjo (that's if they did not get put in the bin!) and also take this feedback seriously too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for some long bumpy rides off road for most of the trip. Be prepared to shower in cold water as they never seemed to have the hot water on when we were showering mornings or evenings! Take some cards or games to play in the evening after dinner which finishes by 8 pm or days when you are just left in the ger camps as there is nothing else to do!

walking the amalfi coast

An amazing holiday, scenery spectacular, walks took us through the most beautiful country side,we had views that were sensational. It is very hard to find the right words. This holiday gave us everything,
everything was excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

Standing on top of the mountain looking over the Bay of Naples.sensational.Felt as if I owned the world.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine Rooney was our guide. What a fountain of knowledge. She is a very friendly person,we were at ease at all times. Ask a question, she had the answer, terrific. Local knowledge was great, she seemed to know everyone in the town, and they all liked her. All in all Christine is an amazing guide, very friendly and knowledgable, she made the whole trip a joy. she made everything "DOABLE"

Mountain & Villages of Evia

This was my 1st trip with Exodus. I was very impressed with the various landscapes I encountered on the day hikes throughout the week.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking along the gorge and ending the hike on one of the nicest beaches I have ever seen.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Cecile was excellent. She was able to maintain a nice pace for our group. Very well organized and very informative.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring a pair of long pants and a long sleeve shirt. We encountered numerous prickly bushes on the trails.

Toubkal Long Weekend

This was an excellent trip and good value for money. The only things to be wary of is that the trip notes state that some of the paths are stony, well actually ALL of them are rocky, its like climbing stairs for 8 hours…….the only reason i mention it is that my group found this a bit more high impact on knees, thighs and calf muscles than normal trekking. Two of us did the Kilimanjaro Rongai trip and found it easier than this

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to say what the most inspirational moment was, on the way down i sat and cried but that was exhaustion, i also cried a little when one of the guys got out a bottle of gin once we were back down. It was a bit too short to have any real inspirational moments, if i could do it again i would do the 8 day trip instead.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Out group leader was Abdullah, and he was great. Even when one of our group decided they knew better (there's always one!) he dealt with her in a very calm way. Very professional. Abdullah dealt with the fears that one of our group had dealing with asthma coming up the mountain, all in all he was excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You can buy water along the way for 12-15 dirhams for 1.5L but that gets costly since you can consume a lot in a day. Also its really really rocky, i keep emphasizing this as i read the trip notes and wasn't expecting it to be as bad as it was. the trip notes state that some paths are stony when in reality over 5 hour of climbing and 6 hours of descending were via rocks, not small ones either, which had a higher impact of my knees than i was expecting.

Walking the Fjords - Norway

An excellent holiday! The walking was wonderful, the scenery stunning, food fantastic, and the guide generous, (I like alliteration!). We stayed at Ned Guard where our room was very comfortable and the staff brilliant. Our guide, Asbjorn Manum, was a wonderful host who shared his love of hiking with the group. A gentleman of, let’s say, more mature years, but still walked up the steepest slopes like a youngster.

Most Inspirational Moment

We took the optional trip to walk on a glacier. Once geared up with crampons, ice axe, harness and rope, we were taken on a stunning two hour walk on the glacier including descending through an ice cave. Our guide for the trip was a young Nepalese man who told me he had climbed Everest 9 times - can't accuse him of lacking mountaineering experience!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Asbjorn was an excellent host and guide. Having climbed up the mountain, he would produce tea and coffee that he had carried up with him, and small mats for everyone to sit on. He also loved to tell us stories about the area and its history. A wonderful man. I hope I'm as fit as he is when I reach his current age!

Advice for Potential Travellers

The weather can be variable, so make sure you pack both tee shirts and shorts, and something much warmer. Gloves and hats are essential for some of the walks. On our last day we walked at around 1,400m elevation and the temperature was only just about freezing with a brisk wind blowing.Z

amalfi coast pompeii and pizza

Amazing, brilliant holiday-certainly one of the best we’ve enjoyed. Great experiences and company in well run family hotel .

Most Inspirational Moment

The walk of the Gods. Looking down on beautiful Amalfi coast. " Ancient mule tracks wind through lemon groves and gorges. Truly the path of the Gods. "

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader, Eduardo, was key to the success of our holiday. He was a superb organiser, remarkably good at interesting and amusing children and keeping everyone involved and happy. We cannot praise him enough.

Advice for Potential Travellers

No- just book the holiday!

Walking in Albania

Stunning drives and stunning walks in the Albanian Alps will live with us. And also the group, which was a very successful convivial and complementary collection of personalities.

Most Inspirational Moment

The folklore evening was probably the best evening I've ever spent on an Exodus trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dorian was an enthusiastic and energetic walk leader, thinking on his feet and doing his best to cater for the interests of each member of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared to enjoy copious amounts of local feta cheese! Food generally is not greatly inspiring, especially for vegetarians.
