The turning wheels on a Cuban odyessy

Now………….. the first thing to say is that I am NO cyclist…..well that’s not totally true of course as of course I CAN ride a bike and myself and my wife have a reasonable level of fitness, however its not my recreational pastime as was some on our trip…….BUT…..What a holiday.

If you are any doubt about your ability to do this, then so long as you have that reasonable level of fitness you should be just fine….and if you feel like riding on the support bus one day or more, then you can do that as well. No problem or aspersion cast from your fellow travellers.

The perfect thing is that you get to see the country side as it SHOULD be seen……Up close. Cuba is very beautiful and majestic in places with areas untouched and great vistas. Lovely to see from a bike.

The tour starts and ends in Havana and you go East going through some of the most important places such as the historic Bay of Pigs area, World Heritage site of Trinidad, the National park, and the Bustling City’s of Santiago and Havana….I’m not going to say all the secrets….I want you to go and find them yourself, but I promise you will NOT be disappointed. The history and beauty of the island is a great mix. You really learn a lot.

Most Inspirational Moment

Well I really loved the off road cycling sections as we went through some of the areas away from the City's, beaches and tourist places and you see exactly how the "ordinary" people live. Its a real eye opener. That said.......... learning Salsa dancing on a roof top in Trinidad will live long in my mind as well!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Angel Lopes was a local man who had been to Europe so had travelling experience himself. He also had a great balance of local knowledge, humour, and leadership when needed. He looked after us well and I thought actually handled a couple of difficult situations with good customer face. Our group was a real mix of young and old from all over the world, and I think he sized up our personal characters fairly quickly.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go with an open mind. Things don't always go to plan so be prepared to think on your feet and go with the flow. The Casa Particulares, (the "bed and breakfast" home lodgings) are variable standard but apart form one slight issue, all of ours were totally acceptable. The ones at the Bay of Pigs and Trinidad were especially good. But they are people homes so have that in mind. Take hand gel and Toilet paper!!...sounds odd but gives you a bit of personal protection especially when you are totally away from the city's.

Family holiday in the rainforest

The holiday was superb. Lots of lovely animals to see and of great interest to both kids and adults alike. Our guide and driver Antonio and Theodore were superb. Antonio super knowledgeable and a top bloke.
Company of the fellow travellers and kids also made the trip-superb bunch of people. Animals, scenery and wildlife was great to see. Kids are still talking about the things they have seen

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the rainforest downpours and all the great animals.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Group leader was first class, amiacable and helpful. He listened to people's needs within the group and was always enthusiastic to show us the scenery and wildlife. Nothing was too much bother.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't forget your going to the rainforest. At times it may be wet and difficult to dry things but the weather is warm

A wonderful cycling trip around this jewel in the Indan Ocean

A wonderful trip around a great country brilliantly led by Suresh with his excellent team ensuring everyone got the most of the holiday. A really well put together itinerary balancing cycling, culture, wildlife and fun!

Most Inspirational Moment

Not easy to pick one particular highlight but with virtually no transfers we were able to take in the sights, sounds and smells (of the wonderful cooking) as we moved from place to place by bike. Whilst the cycling was tough at times there was time to see historical monuments, visit a few temples and witness the way different religions worship and prey, sit by the pool and beach, take a short hike up a mountain, watch wildlife, eat the wonderful food and of course sample the local beer! The variety has been superb - the scenery and climate changed as we explored this gem in the Indian Ocean allowing us to see paddy fields, tea plantations, wetlands, forests and more. The roads were in general pretty good - better than most backroads I cycle on in the UK - and we tended to avoid most of the traffic. The people of Sri Lanka are the icing on the cake. The children wave and say hello as you whistle past on your bike and in general we got a very warm welcome everywhere we went.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The Exodus team were exceptional and its easy to see why Suresh has been recognised for his abilities. Not only did he make sure everything run like clockwork but he worked tirelessly to make sure we got every ounce of enjoyment from the trip, pulling out a few pleasant surprises along the way (I'm not going to say more - you will have to go and find out for yourselves!). Suresh was well supported by Upali, Sandy and Vijay who kept us safe, watered, fed and happy... I didn't have to pick up my suitcase for the whole trip and am still trying to work out how they found out who's bag was who's.... They clearly enjoy their jobs and it mattered to them that we had the best of holidays. Thank you so much.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a brolly for the occasional shower and be prepared for some early starts.

Galapagos in Darwins footsteps

A few days spent on each of four slightly different islands allowing you to see lots of wildlife and some interesting geological features.

Most Inspirational Moment

Snorkelling with sea turtles ( never seen so many) rays and sea lions and the trek up to the rim of Sierra Negra. View of the caldera was amazing.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fabian was very knowledgeable , had a great sense of humour and the patience of a saint.

Advice for Potential Travellers

With hindsight I wouldn't have bothered to take my own snorkel gear - there was plenty available to hire .

Great trip with stunning mountain views

A great mountain biking trip, nothing too technical but loads of fun ups and downs. The scenery is just epic, huge mountains as far as you can see. Combined with blue skies and great guiding a perfect new year start!

Most Inspirational Moment

The variety of inspiring scenery we cycled through - all in the middle of nowhere. And amazing stars at night.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't forget to change money back before you go through passport control on your way home.

Ultimate professional, knowledgeable, friendly hard working, inspirational and smart. This guy could not do more to make our holiday a success from start to finish. Hope there is an award for (Global) group leader of the year. Suresh should be the winner !

Advice for Potential Travellers

You gotta get there!

Relaxed walking off the beaten track

The key really is in the name of this trip – having already done Mt Toubkal and the High Atlas a few years before, I was curious how different it would be. The answer is it’s very similar, but without the altitude and people. Any people at all in fact, other than local villagers. It’s also a lot easier – much less ascent and easier days

Most Inspirational Moment

There wasn't really an inspirational moment, but we had some fabulous sunsets and sunrises from camp, and lying in bed looking out of my tent at nothing but wilderness is the reason I do these kind of trips. Pretty good views from on top of Jebel Aklim also - well worth the climb.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I've met Hasan before on the Toubkal trip, and while he is never the most sociable of guides, I've come to admire his no-nonsense approach to trekking. While he stays in the background, it doesn't mean he's not constantly watching and ensuring safety, and when problems occurred, he sorted them quietly and efficiently. His approach lies in teaching people how to be responsible for themselves in the mountains, which is a lot more instructive (and safer longterm) than the mollycoddling approach that some guides take. He also has a wicked sense of humour and will happily chat away as long as you initiate the conversation.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a great introduction to trekking and wild camping for those new to it, or as an easy relaxing trip for those more experienced. Truly off the beaten track. Don't expect much from the "hotels" (don't expect mod cons like hot water or working light bulbs). But at the end of the trip, the hammam experience is definitely a must (and the only way to get properly clean if there's no hot water in the hotel!). Take plenty of warm clothes (even during the day, you can be in tshirt one minute and 5 layers the next) including good warm hat and gloves. For winter take the warmest sleeping bag and down jacket you can, it can get well below zero at night. Food is excellent and very plentiful, but take a few cereal bars or other snacks, as some of the days can be long and lunch may not be till well into the afternoon.

Patagonian Highlights

An excellent trip with the opportunity to gain a real perspective of the scale of Patagonia. This trip offers a diverse range of environments from Buenos Aires to the Steppe to the mountains and Peaks of Torres deal Paine. There is a lot of overland travel but this is all part of the experience. The food and accommodation were superb.

Most Inspirational Moment

Loved seeing icebergs calving off the Perito Merino glacier and hiking in the very windy Torres del Paine to see the Granite towers.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was outstanding. Highly knowledgable of both Argentina and Chile. He had a great sense of humour and was very willing to accomdate the different interests of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take mostly Argentine Pesos, some US dollars and some Chilean Pesos. Additional trips can be paid for in dollars. Food is more expensive than at home so you will need a reasonable amount of spending money.

Cycling the Lake District of Chile & Argentina

A great tour around the lakes of Chile and Argentina. The itinerary over the Andes and over the lakes via boats is fantastic. Great food and scenery.

Most Inspirational Moment

The day cycling over the Andes. It was a tough climb but very rewarding!!! Cycling in Conguillio National Park was also fantastic and a contrasting landscape to all other days - stunning!

Thoughts on Group Leader

The leader and his assistants were a great team, and worked well together.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack clothing for cool and wet weather. The first week was cold and wet, and I wish I had packed more clothes suitable for cooler weather both on and off the bike (think of what you're wear when cycling in November in London). The second week was warm and sunny, so save your shorts and t-shirts for that week. Make full use of the local launderettes in Bariloche and Pucon...costs only a few pounds for a bag of dirty clothes washed and dried in under 24 hours. Also, a number of people on the group flights missed their connecting flights and had their baggage go missing which was understandably very stressful. The main cause was due to short connections between flights (e.g. 2 hours in Madrid). Ensure you have lots of time for flight connections; we booked our own flights and allowed 3.5 hours in Madrid which worked ok. Packing some cycling gear in your hand luggage is also a good idea as the cycle clothing options are limited in Puerto Varas and surrounding areas.

A week in Jordan

A busy and hugely varied week in Jordan. Every day we did something and saw something new – I loved the variety of the holiday and the different experiences you can have in such a short time in relatively small country

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many - but seeing Petra for the first time really was amazing. And we all loved it despite the freezing weather! Also getting a sense for the dramatic scenery of Jordan in the hills - this was something i wasn't really expecting, but the scenery was absolutely outstanding.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Zahair was a good leader. He was ill during the middle of our trip, which was unfortunate, but overall his passion for his country and his pride in it shone through.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If travelling in the winter months, bring plenty of warm clothes. A sleeping bag for the night at Wadi rum is essential (not optional as the trip notes suggest!).
