Walking in Las Alpujarras

This was a nice week and a good choice for an easy walking holiday in Europe early in the year.

Most Inspirational Moment

I can't think of anything inspirational but it was a pleasant trip - the walks and scenery got better and better as the week progressed.

Thoughts on Group Leader

At first I was surprised to be met at the airport by an English tour guide but he was great - very knowledgeable about the area and always helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Despite the name of this tour, don't expect to be walking in the Sierra Nevada mountains (it's the foothills), and only expect half a day in Granada!

Suggestions

The hotel and Berchules were a nice choice for the location for the week but it would be nice to have more 'authentic, local' food at the hotel.

Viva las Alpujarras!

Great value trip. Wendy and Alejandro are fabulous hosts, George is a great guide. Great scenery, brilliant company 🙂

Most Inspirational Moment

Really enjoyed the relaxation of the trip-nice to be so well looked after and the group were great and we gelled well. Seeing the Alhambra at night was very special

Thoughts on Group Leader

George is a wealth of knowledge and it was good to get an insight into life in the Alpujarras. Very relaxed and manageable pace fur our group

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book it!

Suggestions

We were so well looked after for this week. I would recommend the trip based on the hospitality of the hotel and the knowledge of the guide. And hopefully you will be in a great group as I was :)

Sierra Nevada and Granada

Lovely varied walks in unspoiled countryside and a visit to the beautiful Alhambra Palace of Granada.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting George's home - what a superb achievement.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Friendly, knowledgeable and obviously concerned for the wellbeing of the region.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The trip notes covered everything very well but expect to put on a few pounds as the food is so delicious.

Suggestions

We have visited this region many times (and even done this trip before) - it never fails to please. And we were fortunate to have a really varied and interesting group with whom to enjoy the walking and evenings.

Sierra Nevada and Granada

The holiday was fantastic – great walks, a very knowledgeable guide and first class hospitality from the family at the Hotel Los Berchules.

Most Inspirational Moment

The final day's walk - a circular walk from the hotel which gives you fantastic views across the valley back to Berchules. Although it is the most taxing walk, it is not too much hard work and it is worth it for the views from the other side of the valley.

Thoughts on Group Leader

George has a passion for the local area and his knowledge is second to none given he has lived in the area for over ten years. He was also very good at making sure people of mixed abilities were catered for on all the walks.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The afternoon in Granada was very rushed, just too much to try and fit in. Therefore, if you are thinking of extending your holiday I would recommend an extra night or two in Granada for sightseeing.

Suggestions

Overall, it was a very good holiday and a complete contrast to the busy beach resorts in the Costas. It is worth emphasising just how good the hotel in Berchules is. Officially, it is a two star (presumably due to lack of air conditioning - which wasn't a problem for us in September). However, the quality of service and food is top class.

Walking in the Alpujarra

An amazing week of walks and Alpujarran culture.  As a non hill walker I was a little nervous about my ability to complete the many ascents involved in the guided walks but the pace was set by the group with plenty of capacity for those of us who live far from the hills! The scenery was continuously breathtaking with a new landscape around every corner.  The Hotel Los Berchules is by far the most friendly and hospitable I have stayed in with a real feeling of being at home.  The best packed lunches I have ever been given and the evening meal was always tasty and nutritious.

Most Inspirational Moment

The added bonus of a trip to Granada and particularly The Alhambra was more than I had hoped for.

Thoughts on Group Leader

George is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about his home.  He was constantly friendly, helpful and a reassuring presence.  He has a great relationship with the hotel which gave a warm feeling of continuity.  His knowledge of Granada and assistance with finding our way around was also great as it meant we could see the City in the short space of time we had.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Check the local weather forecast before you go.  It would be helpful to have done some hill walking beforehand and be used to walking on rough terrain.

Suggestions

This was my first Exodus holiday but it will not be my last.

Beautiful Alpujarra

Wonderful opportunity to enjoy the more rural side of Spain – stunning scenery, friendly & hospitable accommodation and lovely walking.

Most Inspirational Moment

Difficult to pick one - the views over the snow capped Sierra Nevada were hard to beat but also loved walking through the sunlit pine forests of Berchules Valley and wandering through the back streets of old town Granada.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent - welcoming and friendly, clearly passionate about the region, its culture and history and very willing to impart that knowledge which added enormously to the enjoyment. Great choice of local bars etc for good value tapa, beer and coffee too!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't ignore the advice about warm clothing on the trip notes! Berchules is at reasonable altitude and was definitely chillier than I'd expected in late March, even when the sun was shining, particularly on the higher parts of the walks - really could have done with a warm hat some days!

Suggestions

Particular thanks to the lovely hotel owners, who couldn't do enough to make their small family run hotel feel like a home from home for the week.

Sierra nevada and Grenada

A lovely week of walking in Las Alpujarras through pretty white villages, woodland trails, hillsides covered with wild lavender and thyme. As it was in early October there was also the added bonus of picking walnuts, almonds and ripe figs from the trees. The group was lovely and each day ended with a well earned beer in a local bar. We were made to feel very welcome in the hotel – the food was always excellent and the staff went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. And last but not least Sami the dog made an excellent member of the walking group.

Most Inspirational Moment

I have wanted to visit the Alhambra for many years so this was an excellent end to the week. Although it is impossible to see everything in one day so I now need to go back to see the rest...

Thoughts on Group Leader

George was excellent. He was organised in a laid back way - everything happened as and when it should. He was very good at managing the different walking abilities and speeds within the group without any fuss. He was very knowledgeable about the local area and culture and shared just enough stories and information.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you book your Alhambra tickets on line before travelling. The walk descriptions in the brochure were pretty accurate so the level is what I was expecting - there is always the worry that it is going to be too easy or too hard.

Sierra Nevada & Granada

A lovely area with good scenery. The hotel is of a high standard run by a very friendly family. Good food. Great views from the room balconies. The walks are excellent with many fine views. Quite steep in places but at a leisurely pace.

Most Inspirational Moment

A zig zag descent into a craggy valley.

Thoughts on Group Leader

George was an excellent leader, very friendly and very knowledgeable about the local history. He has lived in the area for a number of years.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Good walking boots are definitely required. Take a camera and sun hat. The trip to Granada was interesting but one day was not enough, we wished we had booked an extra day there to see everything there is to see of the city even if that would have meant arranging our own transport back to Malaga for the flight back.

Suggestions

There are no hair driers in the rooms, but they may have been available if we had asked.

SIERRA NEVADA & GRANADA

An excellent introduction to walking in Spain.  A comfortable hotel and breathtaking scenery topped by an opportunity to visit the Alhambra Palace on the final day.

Most Inspirational Moment

Every day revealed some new delight, whether it be understanding the complex irrigation systems, lunching in a spot where it was impossible to avoid sitting on an orchid, watching birds of prey circling above in a clear bue sky or just enjoying a good walk in excellent company.  The Alhambra was perhaps the icing on the cake.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jeremy was a great walking companion with lots of local knowledge, real enthusiasm for the area and clear explanations of the various walks.  He paced us well and was usually able to encourage us along the final kilometre with the promise of refreshment in a local bar.  It is a great luxury to walk in stunning countryside knowing that the route has been thoroughly researched and adapted to the group's needs. He was also a massive support when the Alhambra ticket facility crashed just as we arrived to pick ours up.  The half hour it took to get re-started was frustrating but we got there in the end.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We were lucky with the weather and had glorious sunshine all week.  Instead of the waterproofs and thermals we had thought we might want, we needed sunhats and sunblock, so be prepared for any conditions.  As others have indicated, also be prepared for it to be wet under foot - it's all down to those extensive irrigation systems. If you want to visit the Alhambra, book on line before you travel.

Suggestions

This is a superb holiday option if you like spectacular scenery and varied wildlife.  The hotel in Berchules is friendly, provides tasty food and has great views.  Although the staff speak excellent English, they are happy to encourage you to practice your Spanish.

SIERRA NEVADA & GRANADA

Stunning scenery, wonderful, informative guide and excellent family run hotel.Well organised giving a trouble free holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking high in the hills with glorious views.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Patient, informative, interesting and helpful in every way.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do it!

Suggestions

Nothing to add - it was a perfect trip - thank you.
