Darjeeling, Sikkim & Singalila

Great trip, very varied itinery visiting towns & some working monasteries, location of hotels is very good. Walking too is varied – lovely walks, through forests & bamboo plus up on the ridge for a couple of days. We were lucky & got sun & clear skies – views of everest and the whole range to kanchenjunga are fantastic. Trekking staff are brilliant.

Most Inspirational Moment

Sunrise & sunset on the ridge both days - pretty special. Also witnessing the monks chanting their blessings.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He resolved the few issues that came up and everything worked well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It is cold & windy on the ridge at night,be well prepared.

Great memories of an epic trip

Three generations of Yanks walked through Spanish landscape and culture and made some history of their own with a unique group of walkers lead by a great guide

Michael was fantastic, experienced interesting patient and knowledgeable. Best guide I have seen. He did a great job of making people feel welcome and delivered a great experience,

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a full experience of history food and culture, well balanced and walks for enough for all.

How to make it the whole TMB

This trip offers more of the TMB route than most of the trips that I looked into, but it doesn’t do it all. If you read the trip notes carefully you’ll realise that there is a section in Val Ferret which may be missed out, and the section from Courmayeur to Lac Combal is bypassed. When we were on the trip we realised there were two other bits to be missed out. From Les Houches towards Brevent, and from Plan Praz to La Flegere. The good news is that, if you do want to do the whole tour then it can be done within the trip: Val Ferret – get your leader to take the bus all the way back up to Arp Nouva, where you stopped the previous day, rather than at an earlier stop point. There is plenty of time, this is what our group did. From Courmayeur – you can catch a bus to Courmayeur on your day off, walk the route to where it drops down to the path to Lac Combal, & then walk down to La Visaille where you can get a bus back to Courmayeur/the campsite. Les Houches – either persuade your leader to take the bus back to Les Houches & start from there, or walk the missing section on the final day off Plan Praz to La Flegere – add this onto the final planned day. You then take the cable car down from La Flegere rather than Plan Praz (the ticket works for both) & that’s the whole TMB done 🙂

Great cycling trip!

I had a great time cycling around Greece with Exodus. The scenery on each day was so diverse, from cycling along the coast, through vineyards and mountains. No two days of cycling were the same. The tour guide was excellent, he always found the best places for lunch, usually off the beaten track and told interesting Greek Myths during our breaks. I would highly recommend this trip!

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling along the coast to a Greek hut where we sat and had lunch. It was so secluded and all of the guests had the chance to swim in the clear blue waters whilst the guide prepared a very fresh lunch.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dimitris was great. He was very friendly, knowledgeable about all things to do with Greek Mythology, and kept the right cycling pace for the group. He was also very thoughtful and printed some photos for each customer at the end of the trip and ensured we tried all of the Greek delicacies.

Spectacular

Overall, one of the best Exodus holidays we have been on. The good weather (in October), of course, helped, as it might not have been so pleasurable had it rained all the time! A good itinerary, covering all the key areas we wanted to visit, and a superb, friendly, family run hotel with a great atmosphere.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting Herculaneum and Pompeii, which was the main reason for our choice of holiday.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eduardo was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. Always there when you needed him. Conscientious, helpful, friendly and with a twinkle in his eye! Cannot praise him highly enough! Thank you, Eduardo!

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you are interested in the archaeological sites, do follow up on the free day with a visit to the Archaeological Museum in Naples, because that is where the wealth of artifacts is on show, which you cannot see from what are essentially "highlight" guided tours of Herculaneum and Pompeii. In the two hours or so allotted to these sites, you get a valuable insight into their workings and history, but there is so much more that you cannot see (eg the 24kg hoard of silver ware, now in the museum). Secondly, we found that Exodus's suggested daily outgoings for lunches etc are somewhat underestimated. Unless you are happy with a simple sandwich and a beer, you are better to budget for around 30-40 euro/head on a main course and a glass of wine (or beer) plus the inevitable tip, in a restaurant. Costs have risen generally in 2022 but Amalfi, Positano and Capri are "high end "resorts, so prices are naturally inflated!

Walking in andalsia

Everyday had something different to offer, the walks were varied from gentle strolls along wide paths to much more challenging terrain. Magnificent views of olive groves and mountains, plenty of wild life and interesting fauna despite the dry conditions at this time of year, would love to see the wild flowers in spring. The accommodation was not luxury but very comfortable and very welcoming, the staff are lovely, food was homemade and tasty.

Most Inspirational Moment

Difficult to choose! Walking in the Sierra de Grazalma was absolutely beautiful, wild and felt very remote.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Michael was an inspirational leader with a wide knowledge of the area and what it had to offer. His enthusiasm was infectious and made this trip very special.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If offered the chance to visit Ronda take it! It’s a little jewel.

Like holidaying with your very own David Attenborough!

This was a wonderful wildlife holiday. Although the itinerary is packed, with early starts and changes of location every two days, it means that we covered the range of Costa Rica’s habitats. Our engaging and humorous guide Johnny was outstanding , with encyclopedic knowledge of Costa Rica’s flora and fauna, and the unerring ability to spot them wherever we went. It was like having our personal David Attenborough with us for the entire holiday!

Advice for Potential Travellers

We visited at the end of the rainy season, so yes it did rain - the term rainforest rather gives the game away - but usually the mornings were dry and sunny. Ponchos proved very useful to protect rucksacks and cameras during the downpours. The high humidity meant that clothing took a long time to dry, so would recommend taking as much quick drying technical clothing as you can, although there were regular laundry opportunities. I'd also packed walking boots, which were not necessary. Stout walking trainers were perfectly adequate. Card payment is virtually universal in Costa Rica.

Surprising Albania

A beautiful country with a colourful history, much of it red.

Most Inspirational Moment

Standing at the summit of the acropolis in Berat Castle on a clear day, with gorgeous views over the surrounding countryside.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Uur guide Klodi was helpful, funny and knowledgeable. Great guy!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring lots of cash to exchange because credit cards are almost never accepted at hotels or restaurants.

An adventure in cold showers

This is a hard going but rewarding trip, provided you have the patience to get through immigration (two and a half hour wait and no signs to help get to the right place). Most days feature an early start and late finish and it is difficult not to flag in the afternoon shift. Sadly the itinerary often pushes the most inspirational visits into this time, (photographers please note the light conditions are poor for these visits and you do not have time to wait). Enroute visits break up the long journeys and feature a good range of sites, you do not feel ‘templed out’ as on other trips. There is a boat trip (Udaipur) listed as optional, it is actually included, just as well because it is really only a trip to a high cost restaurant, time would be better spent simply making an excursion on the lake for the views it gives and moving on, thus reducing the time pressures on the day. The hotels used are all of a reasonable standard but are showing signs of neglect, probably Covid related, dust was thick on switches in a number of establishments and bathrooms were not cleaned to an acceptable standard. This is my only complaint for the tour, I had to wait 4 days to get a warm shower (note warm not hot) and from then on water was either cold or scolding, bit of a pain when the shower fitting falls on ones head! Breakfasts were always basic but adequate and hotel staff mostly up to speed.

Most Inspirational Moment

The fact that India can clean up its' act if there is a will to do so. for example, on my last visit to the Taj MahaL it was surrounded by hostile beggars making for a poor experience, and the river by the Red Fort at Agra was a rubbish dump. I have seen India grow from my first visit in 1977 to today, progress is slow but it is there!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent! Probably the best leader I have encountered with Exodus recently and also over nearly 50 years of travel. His age made communication much easier for the current traveler demographic, often young leaders have difficulty with identifying the needs of older groups.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip features lots of steep stair climbing in palaces, many are without any safety support or space for assistance, keep this in mind when booking, maybe test yourself first. This is an 'early to bed early to rise' trip, lots of early starts to avoid heat or traffic, there is not a lot of downtime either so expect to come back tired and ready to plan a relaxing holiday. This is certainly not relaxing!

the unimaginable wilderness of South Georgia has to be seen

There are not enough superlatives to describe this trip. The whole experience was like being in another universe where wildlife is king and albatrosses rule the skies. It’s only looking back at the photos that it’s possible to accept this was not a dream, but really happened. The landscape of South Georgia is almost unimaginably untouched by people, only the wreckage of the old whaling station at Grytviken is testament to man’s (fortunately) brief reign here. The beaches are ruled by King Penguins, seals and a variety of sea birds. the sounds, the smells and the sights are like a sensory explosion. There cannot be anywhere on this planet to compare with South Georgia. I need to return.

Most Inspirational Moment

Landing in St Andrews Bay South Georgia in a blizzard - even the penguins looked cold. then hiking uphill for about 1k and looking down over the bay. The sight and sound of thousands of King Penguin chicks spread across the bay is so unforgettable it should be named as the 8th Wonder of the World.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ridiculously energetic and passionate about South Georgia. Paul Goldstein did everything possible to make sure we spent as much time on shore as possible, whatever the weather. Clocks were changed, Zodiacs launched in the choppiest of seas and expedition guides were constantly striving to maximise our experience.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Whatever it takes, South Georgia is a place which needs to be visited at least once in a lifetime. Dont hesitate - just go!! Take plenty of layers and the toughest waterproof clothing you can find (at least sailing quality) as Zodiac landings can be wet. also include some hand warmers as South Georgia can be very cold.
