MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

This was truly a GREAT week and a GREAT walking tour!  It starts with the friendly Chalet where you live, to the guide (Oliver) who is simply superb to the actual trekking days which were all very nicely planned out and offered a little bit of a different twist to every day to keep it exciting!

Most Inspirational Moment

The second day where we started to walk from Courmayeur in Italy and where the full day was basically "postcard views" every single minute!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Oliver, the groupleader & guide was one of the highlights of the trip!  A trip like this can be a success or a none success based on the tourleader and Oliver got it ALL right!  The greatness of the trip is partly made by Oliver who is knowledgeable, funny, interesting and had a great way of making the full group feel special!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

We can 100% recommend this trip!  The tempo of the daily walks are set at a very reasonable pace so anybody can really make it without any pre-training.  As the trip notes point out, be aware that the rooms in the chalet are quite small and basic. An extra bonus to the Chalet (on top of the the great food and the outdoor jacuzzi) is that the Chalet has very good wireless connection so if you have to check back with work or need system access its very handy!

MONTENEGRO, BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA

Fantastically well organised trip with excellent local guides.

Most Inspirational Moment

Great to have meals prepared by local people in stunning surroundings. Exodus do this very well and it helps to boost local economy.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent and extremely good historical knowledge. Handled a problem with one of our group who had breathing difficulties very well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

GO to Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia

CORSICAN MOUNTAINS & VILLAGES

We stayed in a friendly family run guest house overlooking the village and mountains.  The mornings and evenings were filled with the heady perfume of lime blossom.  Immediate relaxation!  The mountain scenery was stunning and the people warm and friendly, appreciating us trying to speak French or Italian with them! Some days involved quite a bit of country lane walking or had periods of hanging around waiting for the public bus to turn up at the end of the day, which I found frustrating as I wanted to be walking in the mountains that surrounded us.  However the last 2 days of walking were in the mountains.

Most Inspirational Moment

The walks that included parts of the GR20 and the refreshing mountain streams where we could paddle, dabble or swim dependant on how brave (or hot) we felt! The food in our guest house was excellent but with a typical breakfast of freshly baked croissants and bread with jam plus coffee and orange juice,  we felt the need to supplement this with fruit bought in the village.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rich was an excellent leader with bags of personality, enthusiasm and energy.  He taught us quite a lot from how to correctly use walking poles to spotting and following the required waymark signs....etc.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The temperatures were 32-36degs C so take a hat but don't bother with swimwear or a travel towel as we just went into the streams as we were - very liberating!  Zip-offs were useful to wear in the macquis areas to prevent scratches and, if you're prone to bites, have insect repellent / after bite, etc with you.

MONT BLANC CIRCUIT

The scenery is spectacular throughout much of this hike, provided that the weather permits good visibility. At no point did I ever feel like I was in the "wilderness," but there were plenty of hot chocolate, cake, and pie stops to compensate for that. It was an enjoyable group holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

One really cool moment for me was getting to walk around a Roman cryptoporticus in Aosta, Italy during one of the rest days. This was my first trip to Europe, so it was my first exposure to Roman ruins. I nerded out a bit.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Simon was our guide and leader, and Ben was our logistics coordinator and cook. They were both solid guys who did their jobs well. Simply put, if you're going for a guided walk in the mountains, these are the kind of people you want to go with you. Our group had a relatively broad distribution of preferred walking speeds, and Simon dealt with it perfectly using a combination of patience and flexibility, taking care of the people toiling away in back and letting the people in front go at their own pace without getting too far afield. There was also a diverse and fairly restrictive assortment of special dietary needs that Ben was constantly scrambling to address. As far as I’m concerned, they both deserve medals for putting up with us.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Mountain trails involve elevation gain and loss, so it should almost go without saying that time you invest beforehand in physical conditioning will make you a happier camper on the trail. You do not need to be an iron man by any means, but physical distress can detract from enjoyment if it is experienced over the timescale of a couple weeks.

WALKING IN TUSCANY

A wonderful walking holiday in a beautiful, little visited area of Tuscany.

Most Inspirational Moment

Making it to some of the big peaks to enjoy the amazing views. Mama's delicious food.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Liz was absolutely excellent. She is really knowledgeable and friendly. Always happy to help the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get ready to be surprised by the beauty of northern Tuscany!

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

A fabulous introduction to walking in the Alps. Oliver choreographed a terrific week which took us into stunning scenery and must take full credit (ably abetted by Elaine and Dylan) for sensitively taking care of the whole group’s needs. Thanks for a great holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

There are too many highlights to pick out one, but memories will remain - the traverse around Mont de la Saxe on the Italian side of Mont Blanc stands out as a fantastic walk through Alpine meadows full of flowers; spotting Ibex at Lac Blanc and lunches at refuges (particularly the stunning views from below the Col de Voza).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Oliver was a real star. He paced the walks perfectly taking full account of everyone's abilities. He was informative and knowledgeable and was always sensitive to group needs. He received great back up from Elaine who provided wholesome cooking and provided great pack lunches as well as ensuring that the Chalet felt like a "home from home".

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walks are graded as "B". This fits well with the description in the brochure. If you are super fit, then be prepared to rein yourself in for the benefit of the rest of the group and recognise that there is much to be said for slowing down a little to take in the fantastic views and enjoy the comaraderie engendered and nurtured by Oliver.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - LEMOSHO ROUTE

A good long walk with a tough ascent night

Most Inspirational Moment

Apart from reaching the summit, the whole trip was great, beautiful mountain, lovely people, bonding with new friends and laughing all the way.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Henry Fernandes from the African Walking Co was our head guide, he, his guides and porters looked after us all so well, they were very professional but didn't mind having a laugh too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

Excellent week. Oliver was a fantastic guide and looked after the whole group professionally and expertly. Elaine provided fabulous food the whole week and although I don’t usually eat cake – her cakes are so delicious I had one everyday.

Most Inspirational Moment

The whole week was brilliant. I loved each walk as they were all different in terms of the immediate landscape but always with the mountains as the stunning backdrop.Eating pear and chocolate tart and drinking hot chocolate at a mountain refuge in the sunshine with clear blue skies was a real moment of joy.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. One of the best leaders I have had on a group activity holiday. This is because he paid attention to the needs of the whole group and worked hard to ensure we all enjoyed the walking and the landscape.Elaine provided food for the week and she did so incredibly well. The food was excellent and the amount available was brilliant. In fact I would have to admit to eating a little too much. Large breakfast and lunch (enough to spread over '2' lunches), and a 3 course dinner. Good job I was on a walking holiday.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This holiday is for you if you want a good introduction to the area, enjoy taking in the views and time to appreciate the journey. It is important to understand the grading of the walk as this will determine the level of the group that you will be walking with all week.If you want to use a holiday to push your own physical fitness then you need to understand your own fitness levels and how this compares to the walk selected. This holiday is graded as a B and this is a sound description of the walks.Oliver is a true group leader and will set the pace of the walk according to the needs of the group, as he should. I found the pace on the holiday good and it was great to see the whole group enjoying the walking. There was a great deal of diversity in our group, from marathon runners (not me!) to regularish walkers. But we all enjoyed the walking thanks to Oliver.

WALKING IN TUSCANY

A fantastic week.  Good company, great scenery, an inspirational guide, too much lovely food … and a real Italian family welcome.

Most Inspirational Moment

I really enjoyed the walks through some beautiful beach forest, then out on the more exposed slopes to the top of Monte Sumbra, say.   The stunning views from other peaks.  The village-village walk.  The time to relax in/by the pool at the end of each walk.  The tea and biscuits/beer from the fridge upon return from a day's trekking.  Pottering around in Lucca, soaking up the atmosphere (enjoying a nice long lunch) and on the last day in Pisa before the late evening flight home (we had 2 free days really).  And of course, Mamma.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alejandro is an excellent leader/guide. He is really well organised; he communicated information really efficently and was encouraging every step of the way.  He went out of his way to assist with options on the free day, (e.g. bought and fetched rail tickets for the group), and thus enabled me to manage both visits to Lucca and Pisa later in the week - without missing out any of the scheduled walks.  Always sociable and helpful I really enjoyed his company and wish him luck.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just book it and have a great week.

Mont Blanc Circuit - Quick and Light(ish)

A fast and (preferably) light tour around the iconic Mont Blanc Massif. With an emphasis on seeing the highlights of the Mont Blanc circuit, you can definitely expect your money’s worth of walking when trying to cover as much of the amazing scenery as this trip takes in.

Most Inspirational Moment

Just being in the surroundings makes you want to get out and walk. There was never any reservation on waking each morning. Anticipating what was to come and looking forward to each day meant I couldn’t wait to get started each day!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Graham led us with humour, panache and a very finely judged approach. It’s easy when leading in potentially hazardous environments to set rules in stone and forget that the group is composed of adults, not children requiring herding for a to b. Graham was able to move the group at a pace that kept most people happy most of the time, provide plenty of stops for information, breath catching, photos and snacks. If you find yourself being guided by Graham, consider yourself lucky – he’s as good as I’ve come across in my adventures.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Travel light. No, lighter than that. A bit lighter still... Save that half used toothpaste tube and use it on this trip. Take a smaller bit of soap, not a massive new showergel bottle. There’s no getting away from it. You walk up hills a lot on this trip. The lighter the bag, the easier it is. You come down them too. Your knees will thank you for leaving the hardback bestseller back in Chamonix. For example, two tee-shirts (one day, one night) will see you through the week easily. If you must, you could even wash the daytime tee and dry it overnight. If you're wondering why I say all this, what with three litres of water, lunch, an SLR and a bit too much in the way of clothing, my bag was 17kg, joint heaviest on our trip. I figured I could cut four kg out easily and will do next time! Earplugs are a must for a good night’s sleep in the dorms. Someone will snore. Someone will get up for a wee. If you’re used to dorm living, this will be normal to you. If you’ve never stayed in dorms before, fear not – these were some of the nicest I’ve experienced, with comfy beds, nice and warm. They may feel cosy, with fellow travellers in close proximity, but embrace it and enjoy it! Watch the guide. If they put a jacket on, it’s probably going to get wet. If they’re in a tee-shirt, it’s looking good. Get some training done. Each day contained a significant climb and descent. Our group was described as averagely fit and we spent between six and eight hours walking each day. The fitter you are, the more time you can spend looking at the magnificent views, instead of staring down at your feet on a never ending trudge. I absolutely promise the views are worth the extra effort. If you get a nosebleed and use a tampon to staunch the bloodflow, be prepared for your fellow walkers to point, laugh and take photos. Thank you Richard for this most memorable of moments.
