AMALFI COAST & BAY OF NAPLES

This was a superb holiday, with a good mixture of walking and sight seeing. The scenery was stunning and the hotel staff were outstanding.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting Pompeii, walking up Vesuvius and being able to go round Herculaneum on the free day (which was organised by the hotel).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine was an outstanding group leader. She had an enormous local knowledge and nothing was too much trouble. She met us with a smile at the airport and that smile lasted all week. Several  treats appeared from her rucksack at key moments as well. She is an utterly professional and generous leader who is an asset to Exodus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just beware of the heat if you go in the summer months. Earplugs might help at night as the family next door to the hotel keeps late hours!!

DISCOVER NAMIBIA

A fantastic trip for anyone wanting to gain a flavour of Nambia, from its stunning desert landscapes, to cafes on the coast, game viewing in Etosha and geological curiosities en route. I’ve done 8 exodus trips in the past and this is right up there!

Most Inspirational Moment

For me, it was the visit to Sossusvlei, where we saw the sunset and sand change colour as the sun rose from the top of 'Dune 45' and then the trip to Dead Vlei. You get a choice of going to either Hidden or Dead Vlei but definitely choose the latter.

Ronney was superb! I had read most of the reviews on the website before and saw his name kept cropping up, and I was delighted that the very complimentary comments were not misplaced. He was amazingly knowledgeable, had eyes like a proverbial hawk, so could pick out the tiniest animal or bird and identify it for us. He (and his team of Jonas and 'Happy') were absolutely amazing - incredibly hard-working, the fastest tent constructors I have ever seen and the food was absolutely stunning every night, ranging from fish and chips, chicken curry, springbok stew and cottage pie. Everyone on my trip was amazed with the food!

Advice for Potential Travellers

To be honest, there's nothing here that's not either been said before or fairly obvious, but here are my comments:1. Get South African currency before you go. The Namibian dollar is pegged to the SA rand and is accepted everywhere. Saves finding ATMs (though to be fair, this wasn't difficult).2. Bring a spare battery for your camera. Charging facilities are available (both on the bus and at every campsite), but it's good to be cautious!3. I found a pillow case was handy to stuff my fleece and other clothes items in to make up a pillow. Hardened campers might not need one, but it helped me sleep!4. The adapter you need is the 3 round pins that are marketed for South Africa.5. The water at every camp site was fine. Many people did buy bottled water (and there were plenty of supermarket stops to stock up on supplies) but I didn't. I reckon that at most campsites it taster better than my water back in the UK. 6. A notebook can be a good way of keeping track of all the species you see, if that's your thing.7. Don't bother booking an additional game drive. We saw well over 100+ species from the van and the waterhole at the first Etosha campsite is floodlit; we saw 26 elephant at the waterhole simultaneously one night and then 6 rhino the next.8. I didn't think the books that exodus 'recommended' were all that great. The van has 7 or 8 reference books (birds, mammals, insects, flowers, geology etc etc) so personally, I wouldn't buy any of the books they list and just get a general guide instead, such as the 'Insight Guide' of Namibia (10.99 on amazon), which was very very good. Highly recommended for general information on the areas you visit.9. The flight via Frankfurt is a bit of a pain, but that's all part of the experience! Just check that your hold luggage is being checked in all the way to Windhoek on the way out, or Heathrow on the way back.10. I travelled in July/Aug 2013 and we had great weather (about 7-12C at night and 24-28C by day), bar two very windy days at the start at Sesriem and Solitaire. For the most part it was a dry heat, so all you need are plenty of t-shirts, one or two long-sleeved tops and a fleece. I took a down jacket as so many other reviewers said how cold it was but never used it; maybe we were lucky? Anyway, it helped make a good pillow. Zip off trousers were good as it meant it was easy to keep warm in the cooler evenings and mornings. I took walking boots but they really weren't necessary. Sandals were best most of the time. 11. I can wholeheartedly recommend the quad biking whilst in Swakopmund. Great fun! Brad Pitt's been there 13 times, apparently. 12. Ear plugs are good to muffle the sound of any snorers in the group!!!

CYCLE THROUGH SIENA & CHIANTI

Not what was expected but thoroughly enjoyable.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the end without needing medical attention.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mike was very patient considering the differing levels of bike experience and differing budgets of fellow travellers. Its a hard job balancing everyone's expectations and Mike did a fine job.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Although the trip notes given before the trip are quite informative, I believe my fellow travellers would benefit from taking a small questionnaire before embarking on this “life changing” tour, just to make sure they fully comprehend the road ahead, shall we say.  Have you ridden 100km or more on a real life bicycle ie not on a gaming machine? Have you ridden a gym bicycle at level 15 for more than 20 secs? Do you warm up with a 60minute spin class?Have you worn top to toe lycra? Do you own several lycra outfits in bright glowing colours? Do your lycra pants have an inbuilt nappy?Do you have a bicycle without a basket on the front? Do you own more than one bicycle to accommodate different terrains?Do you and your friends “slip-stream” on weekends? Have you ever worked out your relative velocity? Can you name the last 5 winners of the Tour De France? Do you know the chemical name for EPO?Can you judge a road gradient by 2% by looking at it from a distance of 100m or more? Can you describe more than 5 different road surfaces and conditions?Have you taken your bicycle on a plane with you? Does your bicycle live in the house with you and your family and not in the garage?Have you digested something that does not resemble a food item but contains 200 calories? Does having to chew your food irritate you?Do you know what chaffing cream is? Have you weed yourself on a bicycle and rode on? If you answer yes to the above questions you are going to LOVE LOVE LOVE this holiday!!!! This is a cycling holiday that just happens to be in Tuscany, not a tour a Tuscany that happens to be on a bicycle.  If like me you don’t rides bikes, didn’t prepare, unsure of what “undulating” country-side actually means and on the chubby side, do the holiday anyway!!!! 7 days after the tour your muscles have recovered, you can sit comfortably in a chair and you have erased the memories of ingesting bugs and drinking sweat. You will be proud as punch of your achievements and only remember the gorgeous views and fabulous dinners with Tuscan wines! Just Do It!!!!!!

AMALFI COAST: POMPEII & PIZZA - FAMILY HOLIDAY

This was a great family holiday. The hotel was family run and extremely friendly with great food. Our tour guide Eduardo was excellent and went the extra mile to make sure we all had a good holiday. The scenery in this area was amazing and there were plenty of activities to keep everyone happy. We travelled with our daughter alone this year and the teenage departure meant she was extremely happy with friends of a similar age.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking along the "walk of the gods"with the stunning scenery. The kid's cooking evenings

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was extremely knowledgable and always went a little extra for us all. He could strike a deal on anything! He was good fun and spoke extremely good English.

Advice for Potential Travellers

In July/August the area is extremely hot so be prepared. I would imagine that this holiday would be suitable for all ages of children.

WALKING IN THE WESTERN DOLOMITES

I loved this trip – perfect combination of brilliant leaders (Albert & Eric), superb hiking, spectacular scenery and great company. I chose this over the Classic Dolomites since I don’t have a great head for heights but from what I saw and heard while I was there the Western Dolomites trip has the definite edge. One to put on your bucket list!

Most Inspirational Moment

360 degree views nearly all day every day. The Via Ferrata trip Eric offered on our (and in theory, his) day off - given my poor head for heights it says something for the confidence I had in him (and support from the rest of the group) that I decided to give it a go. I was really glad I did, we had a brilliant day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Albert & Eric were superb, can't praise or thank them enough. They were also wonderful company and a mine of information about the area and people. I can see myself choosing future trips on the basis of which ones they are leading!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't be put off by the sense from the website that this is the poor relation to the Classic Dolomites - it's anything but that! Quite the contrary I'd say. And don't decide on the basis of the comments about the hotel or food. Hotel Laurino was a really nice place to stay - it was great being in a town and being able to go for a stroll or drink in the evening, the rooms were lovely and impeccably clean, the staff were super and nothing was too much trouble. I agree with the reviews about the food - it's pretty average and a bit bland but the location, facilities and staff more than compensated. And there was buckets of food so it certainly wasn't a case of going hungry. Anyway save space for mid-morning and lunch at the refuges - they were fantastic.

TROPICAL ISLAND WANDERER - FAMILY HOLIDAY

Another great holiday from Exodus. A bit less full on than the other trips we have done (Egypt and India) which was good and Sri Lanka is well worth visiting for the scenery, people and food!

Most Inspirational Moment

Watching the elephants from the orphanage in the river when having lunchClimbing Lion's RockTravelling through the mountains - amazing countrysideWent out running a lot - everyone so friendly and amazed to see me running - feels quite lonely going out now I am back in England! (watch out for the dogs though!!)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh was a great tour leader, spent a lot of time and energy making sure all were happy all the time and keeping us all on track, even playing cricket with my son!

Advice for Potential Travellers

As other people have said there is a lot of time spent on the coach - although the roads are generally good and not too much traffic, the tuk-tuks and cyclists and the winding roads through the mountains mean that progress is generally slow (better down in the south of the island)

WALKING IN ALBANIA

A great introduction to the northern parts of this fascianting country!

Most Inspirational Moment

Standing on top of Valbona pass, looking in the one direction down into Theth valley, and in the other Valbona valley. Remote, windswept, with huge white mountians all around. Awe inspiring stuff.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dorien was great, very frienly and knowedgable about his country.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Brings some sweets and snacks with you into the mountains! Once you start trekking, there are no shops for 3 or 4 days, so a bit of chocolate wouldn't go amiss.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A wonderful holiday, a busy week of sightseeing and history with a brilliant tour guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra is amazing. The trek off the beaten track with a local guide was really good as was eating with a local Bedouin one evening. The night camping in the desert was fun. Seeing the sun set and rise out there was just lovely. Camel ride in the morning was good.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was extremely informative, really good English and happy to help with anything. Always on time, very organised and helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definitely worth a visit. The locals are really friendly people, even during Ramadan! Food isn't as cheap as I imagined but very tasty.

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

A great introduction to the Mont Blanc region with great accommodation, daily three course meals, great staff, a lovely group, and some stunning views of the surrounding mountainous landscape!

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching a peak everyday gave a great sense of achievement and certainly made the sore legs and bucket of sweat worth it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mark was very laid back and approachable.   It wouldn't be right not to mention Jayne and John who ran Chalet Chocolat.  Despite all the work they had to do with turn-over time between groups only being a number of hours, they provided varied three course meals and gave the chalet a very homely atmosphere.  They were very friendly and willing to help in every way (including an impromptu pick-up from town for some delayed members of the group).

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes, you really do need the waterproofs.  The weather forecast had suggested it would be sunny all week, however it did rain on one day (the whole day) and I was quite glad to have my hat and gloves on that day as well as my waterproof jacket and trousers. On the free day, go up with the cable car to Aiguille du Midi, then take a return trip to the Italian station and back. You'll get wonderful views of Mont Blanc, but more entertaining was seeing all the people out there in their snow gear trekking along.  Then take your lunch at Aiguille du Midi station, the canteen isn't very expensive.  Then take the cable car back to the halfway point (Plan de l'Aiguille) between and Chamonix. Walk to le Montenvers, then take the train down to Chamonix.  This was one of my favourite days.  The walking was a little harder than I had expected.  I think I read somewhere that a general level of fitness is required and if one was used to weekend walking then this is fine.  Although we all made it, it's worth being aware that the ascents are quite steep and at times feel a little unrelenting. There were plenty of breaks, however some practice with walking up mountains before hand might be advantageous.

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

Chalet Chocolat is a great place to return to after an exhilarating day of walking/hiking; the chalet hosts, John & Jayne, did their utmost to make us feel at home and comfortable; the food was fantastic, with different home baking every afternoon. The Alpine walking was hard work at times but the views, flowers, wildlife and company made it all worth while.  What a fab (albeit tiring) week!

Most Inspirational Moment

Just before reaching the summit on the last walk (Aiguillette des Houches 2285m), we saw 2 bearded vultures, a wonderful sight. The chalet hosts, John and Jayne could not have been more helpful and welcoming and both of them were happy to answer our questions and queries.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Anne was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient.  She was very patient with me - I was forever stopping to sniff, admire, ask about and photograph the multitude of Alpine flowers and plants along the routes.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take clothing for all weathers and your swimsuit for the hot tub if you are in the Chalet Chocolat.  The 39degC water was excellent for the aching legs and feet after a long day on the hill!  It's a long day and be prepared for long, steady ascents. For a fantastic dinner on your free day, try the Aiguille du Midi Hotel restaurant - excellent food, staff and ambience. Do take the Aiguille du Midi cable car, get there early to avoid long queueing.  It's wonderful at the top.
