From Adventure Racer to Our Elite Guide in the Alps: Meet Tim Stephens

"Drawing on years of expedition racing, Tim is now one of the top guides in the Alps. Here's his story "

For our expert tour leader, Tim Stephens, the path to guiding in France didn’t begin in the Alps. He had already discovered a passion that shaped him deeply: expedition adventure racing.

In his mid-twenties, Tim stumbled on the sport, realizing it combined everything he loved: multi-day travel through wilderness, endurance, navigation, teamwork, and the simple satisfaction of efficiently covering great distances on foot, bike or on the water.

Drawn by the promise of world-class ski touring and year-round adventure on his doorstep, he later made the move to Switzerland – an ideal base for training.

He spent the next 10 years racing at an elite level, largely as part of a Swiss team in the Adventure Racing World Series, competing in six- and seven-day races in Ecuador, Brazil, Fiji, Australia, Africa, North America, tropical islands and across the Alps and Europe.

These were not comfortable, staged adventures. They were non-stop epics through rainforest, jungle, mountain and marsh, navigating by headlamp and instinct, sleeping in the bush, and pushing through exhaustion.

He remembers one race in Brazil’s Pantanal with clarity – paddling alongside alligators, hearing jaguars growling in the night, avoiding stingrays in the swamps and waking up covered in fire-ant bites after collapsing onto the jungle floor to sleep.

“Best leader I've ever had with Exodus. Just the right balance of guidance and independence ”

“It was brutal,” he laughs, “but extraordinary. You get to experience places normal tourism never reaches.”

Now he has slowed down on racing, guiding in Mont Blanc arrived almost naturally. Tim had already been informally leading multi-day adventures for most of his life for friends and family, organizing ski touring or canoe expeditions, mountain-bike trips and long, wild treks.

“I didn’t want to lose the passion by turning it into a job too early,” he says. “But when I did, I realized it actually deepened it.”

What makes Tim stand out as a tour leader is that same instinct forged in expedition racing: the ability to read terrain, pace a group, and quietly adapt when conditions change. In the mountains, he explains, there is no single ‘perfect’ plan – only good judgment, flexibility and experience.

Now, that same approach shapes every trip he leads in the Mont Blanc region.

He’s constantly observing – the weather, how people are moving, how they’re feeling – and making small decisions early so the day runs smoothly.

“In the Alps, patience is key,” Tim says. “You need to find a sustainable pace – one that keeps you moving safely with others on the trail while still taking it all in. It’s not about rushing, it’s about being consistent.”

“Every day is different,” he says. “You’re constantly moving between diverse environments, landscapes, cultures and even languages.”

One of his favorite examples is the crossing from Switzerland into Italy over the Grand Col Ferret with spectacular views down the valley.

“You go from hearing bonjour on the trail to ciao almost instantly,” he says. “It’s such a simple thing, but it’s the point where the journey really shifts.”

He also enjoys pointing out the dramatic spires around Chamonix – the aiguilles.

“These majestic pinnacles dominate the skyline – and what’s incredible is that pretty much everything you can see has been climbed,” he explains.

It’s here that Tim often brings in the deeper story of the valley. Chamonix is widely considered the birthplace of modern alpinism, with mountaineers scaling these peaks since the late 18th century. He’ll often link what you’re seeing to figures like Italian mountaineer Walter Bonatti, pointing out the kind of routes and north faces that defined that era of climbing.

On some itineraries, you stop for a hot chocolate at the Italian Walter Bonatti Refuge, where that history feels especially tangible.

“He was the first person to make a solo winter ascent of the north face of the Matterhorn. Sitting there, looking at the mountains he climbed, it really adds depth to the experience. You’re looking at hundreds of years of exploration,” he says.

Tim guides across multiple Mont Blanc itineraries – from highlights weeks to full-circuit routes, both hotel-based and camping – and each, he says, has its own personality.

“The Mont Blanc Hiking Highlights trip is a great introduction for those with limited hiking experience,” he explains. “You get the best viewpoints and a real sense of the region in a shorter time – it’s a good way to experience the Alps without committing to the full circuit.”

The full Tour du Mont Blanc, whether hotel-based or camping, brings its own rhythm.

“With hotels, you get that mix of challenge and recovery,” he says. “And camping adds a different kind of camaraderie – there’s something about being out there together, living more simply, that really bonds people.”

Tim makes sure to highlight that trekking Mont Blanc is still a physical challenge.

“Fitness is important,” he says. “But experience on trails is just as important – maybe more so.”

Tim encourages travelers to train on uneven ground and more challenging hikes rather than sticking to flat paths or gyms: “Get out into the hills,” he advises.

“Tim was “top-of-class” in terms of his mountaineering knowledge and skills, as well as his ability to pass on information about the local fauna, flora and cultural elements ”

Once on the trip, his focus is on helping each person find their rhythm.

“You get mixed-ability groups,” he says. “So it’s about reading how people are moving, giving tips on technique, and making sure everyone feels comfortable.”

“A lot of people are stepping outside their comfort zone,” he explains. “And when you do that together, it creates a strong connection.”

It’s not uncommon for groups to stay in touch long after the trip ends.

“People plan more trips together, check in with each other,” he says. “It’s great to see.”

For Tim, the Mont Blanc experience isn’t just about the walking – it’s about everything that comes with it.

“Food is a big part of it,” he says. After a long day on the trail, he encourages guests to try local dishes like tartiflette or fondue, or to sample a small glass of génépi. “You’ve definitely earned it by then.”

If you’re in Chamonix at the end of August, you might also witness something special.

“That’s when the UTMB takes place,” Tim explains – the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, one of the world’s most iconic endurance races.

“The atmosphere is incredible,” he says. “There’s epic music, passionate crowds, and a real sense of anticipation.”

On certain departures, his groups even share sections of the trail with runners who have been moving for over a day.

“You hear the cowbells, people shouting encouragement – it’s amazing,” he says. “It’s something travellers always remember.”

At the end of each trip, Tim takes time to reflect with the group.

“I always tell them: I hope you realise what you’ve achieved,” he says. “You’ve crossed three countries, climbed high mountain passes and completed one of the world’s great treks.”

But for him, it’s about more than just the distance covered.

“It’s also about what you learn along the way,” he says. “About the mountains, the people around you, and yourself.”

Circling the highest peak in Western Europe, finding your rhythm through refuges and valley descents with your group, and crossing borders on foot – that’s what defines the Mont Blanc experience.
