Brilliant trip with a superb leader!

My husband and I loved this trip! The walking is varied, in quite different but equally stunning areas. It is correctly labelled as leisurely/ moderate, as the walks are not technically difficult at all and are not too long for most reasonably fit people – but are long enough for the heat, and leisurely enough to give us plenty of time to look at the rich variety of flora and fauna and to observe the huge number of birds that live here or pass through, which included large birds of prey such as eagles and flocks of vultures.. Michael, our guide, is simply superb. His knowledge of nature is second to none and he was well -organised and kind too. The base, a coverted farmhouse which we had sole use of, is not ‘luxurious’ but is homely and very welcoming. The owners are lovely! Our room was clean and comfortable and the shower was very good, although the hot water took a bit of time to arrive! The views from our balcony were stupendous. The food was plentiful. The breakfasts were a bit limited in choice but the lunches were very good and the evening meals – taken on a terrace with stunning views in every direction! – were massive and delicious (Ref a previous review: They definitely did NOT lack piquancy!). Our group were friendly with a lot of solo travellers, nice people to spend time with!

Most Inspirational Moment

This is very hard to say and I could list dozens! I was amazed at the flocks of vultures - once around 50 of them - who came across our hotel pool in the evening. I loved the dramatic scenery of the Sierra de Grazalema and of the Caminito del Rey, but also equally loved the flower -strewn meadows we passed as we walked through Algamitas farmland... Our day in Seville was another highlight, as we'd never been before. It is a stunning city, especially the palace and the narrow, mediaeval streets.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Michael was superb in every way, certainly one of the best guides we've encountered over our many years of travelling with Exodus. He is lively and fun, but also very solicitous about his group. His knowledge of nature in every respect is quite unbelievable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The hotel offers massages with a local lady, who had moved there decades ago from England. She is SO nice and kind, and very good at massage. The price is cheap, compared with UK prices, and it was wonderfully relaxing at the end of the week. I would wholeheartedly recommend it! (Others did yoga with a local lady, which they also really enjoyed I was told.) In Seville, don't miss visiting the palace, which is stunning. We also loved walking down by the river. Otherwise, I'd just say to take a good hat, clothes to cover your shoulders, lots of sun-screen, and enough containers to carry at least 1.5 litres of water, maybe more. (On some days there were places to refill the containers, but not always.)

A revelation!

Finally travelling again after a tough couple of years and I couldn’t have picked a better place for my first trip – Uzbekistan. I understand the group I was on was the first time the trip had run since the lockdowns, but everything ran smoothly, and it was a great group of people I was travelling with.

The toughest part of the trip was arriving into Tashkent at 3am, getting to the hotel at 4am and then back up at 10am for a day tour around the capital! However our guide – Dilshod – was excellent and pitched things at the right level considering most of the group were sleep deprived!

The next day was another early start and a flight up to Khiva. Part of the reason I chose the Exodus trip is because it went there (some tour companies skip this) and it didn’t disappoint. The hotel was ideally situated just by the gates into the old city allowing us to wander in and explore on our own after Dilshod had shown us around the main sites. We were also lucky enough to experience the preparations for an international traditional dance festival the Uzbek Tourism board have started and as a result there were many locals in traditional costume wandering the old city.
Next stop was Bukhara which I adored. There’s so much to see and do here and whilst the area around the hotel (Lyabi House complex) did feel very touristy, there were many locals around too and it was a short walk to many of the key sites. The free time here in the evening and during the afternoon on the final day in Bukhara was great to just wander at your own pace, or, after a few days in the heat, to visit a hammam as a couple of us did, to relax and get the knots in your shoulders/back pummelled away!

The drive from Bukhara to Samarkand is a long one which I’d guess is why there’s a stop at a yurt camp in order to avoid a super long day. I’ve spent a couple of weeks in yurts in Mongolia which were smaller but nicer than those here. I’m not sure if its because they haven’t had many guests during the pandemic, but the yurt camp felt a little run down, but it was only for a single night.

Samarkand, like Bukhara has loads to see and keep you busy but definitely feels more of a big city than Bukhara did. However, the scale of the buildings here dwarf anything in Bukhara with their sheer size. The jewel in Samarkand’s crown is of course the Registan and its certainly impressive. Definitely go back on your own when the sun has set to see it lit up.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Kudos must go to our guide, Dilshod. He was superb – even rearranging personal evening plans a few times to help the group out ordering dinner, etc and on the long bus trips was full of knowledge, history and jokes, keeping everyone entertained.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Nope - just book it and go! You won't regret it.

Perfect trip

Good food and wine all week, and great walking, what more can you ask for?

Most Inspirational Moment

It was good to learn more about the different types of prosecco.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Vania is an excellent tour leader - you are safe in her hands, and will have a great time!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do this trip. Don't eat much for lunch at the airport on the way out, you will get a generous dinner in the evening! (and that theme continues all week really …). I did use mossie repellant (just the natural citronella stuff), and I didn’t get bitten, so would recommend. Would also recommend walking poles most days, as there are some steep up/down sections on all but one of the walks. I walked to San Gallo church on the “free” day, which I would recommend for a great view. If using Google maps, aim for the nearby locanda (La Candola) rather than the church, then it wont lead you down a non-existant path! Church is just after that on the same road.

Mighty Morocco

This is an excellent trip for anyone wishing to experience a wide variety of aspects of Morocco. The tour content is well thought out with a good balance between city, rural, desert and coastal destinations. Each new place provided a fresh adventure with helpful, interesting guides for the main sites. We were particularly fortunate to be part of a small group- just nine of us. This meant we had room to spread out in the bus which made the journeys more comfortable.
Overall, this trip is very good value for money.

Most Inspirational Moment

It really is hard to pick just one! If pressed, I would have to say the time spent in the desert dunes, riding a camel and then climbing to the highest point for sunset was magical. The sunrise in the dunes was also beautiful with the added bonus of a spectacular planetary alignment just before dawn. We were also lucky enough to be out in the desert for a total lunar eclipse which was very special.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Essaid was an excellent guide. He was always attentive and well organised, a kind and gentle host, rightly proud of his country and culture. He was curious to try some yoga and at Kasbah Oliver I introduced him to some sun salutations o the roof terrace at dawn. That was a lovely moment.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Embrace everything! This is described as a leisurely holiday but you will be kept busy. Consider the heat and your tolerance to it. It was in to the mid 30s for most of our time in mid May which we found fairly comfortable as it is dry and not humid but I would find it hard later in the summer. Don’t expect to pay by card in many of the restaurants, you will need a fair amount of cash. I wish that I had taken earplugs as the cities were noisy - Moroccans like their motorbikes and spend half the night revving them up! Rural locations and Essaouira are much quieter. If you like using a walking pole it can be handy in he High Atlas, but this is not essential. Definitely try the public hammam as it supports a good cause and it is hilarious! In Marrakesh, the Jardin Majorelle is worth visiting but book for as early as possible as it gets very busy. I would recommend visiting the Jardin Secret as well which is quieter and really beautiful too.

Adventure in Jordan -

We travelled as a couple. The tour was well organised, we visited all major sites and had some free time for relaxation towards the end. We visited deserts, castles, dead and Red Sea, biblical and iconic sites such as Petra. The tour also gives a good understanding of the culture and the gastronomic scene in Jordan. Our guide Nidal and driver Jamal were very hospitable. They were friendly, helpful, accommodating and knowledgeable. They wanted to show us all the beauty of their country and we had a fabulous time throughout the trip. We also covered 35km over the course of the time spent in Petra. This is entirely up to your fitness level as already mentioned in previous reviews and the trip notes. This trip was also our first time with Exodus and will definitely recommend.

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra: Treasury, Monastery, High Place of Sacrifice & Mt Nebo

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nidal was excellent in his approach and was responsive to the group needs

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware that Jordan is still a place where smoking is allowed inside buildings Petra by Night is optional. Whilst the show itself was mediocre , the walk through the Siq at night under the stars was an experience to remember.

Great itinerary

If you like wine and some ‘up and down’ walking this is the trip for you. Away from crowds and brilliantly organised.
Even better if you get the Vania and Sandra combo!

A Jolly Good Holiday

We were lucky enough to have the right kind of weather, and as a group we all got on very well, and lead by our guide Veriano.
Loved our day to Vesuvius and Pompei.
The hotel is nice but for me the food was rather dull and unadventurous.
Often after our dinner we would go to the piazza for a walk and coffee.
There were 3 Exodus Group on our particular week, and many of us wanted to go to Herculaneum, and this was arranged for us, as an add on, on our way back to the airport.
Overall it was a good holiday and would recommend.

Most Inspirational Moment

When Veriano, our guide, showed such patience, kindness and care as he helped one of our party who was having a bit of difficulty on the very rocky Path of the Gods.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Veriano was fun, he understood our humour and even joined in with our teasing. He was quite strict, in the nicest way, when I wanted to walk in my sandals. He made go and change them for my shoes. ……. I am glad he did!

Advice for Potential Travellers

The accommodation is half way up the mountain. Most of the walks are going down hill, which suites me very well and there are many steps!!!

Good in parts

This was not as good as other Exodus tours we’ve been on for a variety of reasons. Main problem was the itinerary. The order changed, for no apparent reason, causing the tour to be unbalanced. The rescheduling meant the first 3 days were excellent and full on, covering Amalfi/Positano, Herculaneum/Pompeii and Capri, but the following 4 days were too relaxed with not much going on. Ravello is a lovely hilltop village but we were left there unguided for over 5 hours, far too long. The walk on “path of the gods” was the only thing planned on the penultimate day but was only a linear walk (not circular as in the trip notes) 5km total, about 2 hours. It was foggy up in the hills that day and the last day so we couldn’t see the views (not the fault of Exodus!)

The final day we were kicking our heels waiting outside the hotel for the bus to the airport. The group flight back to London didn’t leave until after 7pm – Exodus should look at offering an earlier flight or putting on some activity for that day.

The hotel was very comfortable and largely dedicated to Exodus tours. The staff and management were very helpful. The evening meals were very good, and the local wine was good and reasonably priced. Breakfast choices were limited but good quality. Only real drawback was no wifi in the bedroom.

Most Inspirational Moment

Capri was glorious.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eduardo, was very experienced and made sure everything ran smoothly. The group was less cohesive than other tours I’ve been on and there was some unnecessary friction between him and a few of the guests

Advice for Potential Travellers

Look at the flight times. The final day we were kicking our heels waiting outside the hotel for the bus to the airport. The group flight back to London didn’t leave until after 7pm – see if you can opt for an earlier flight.

Excellent full-on tour of Jordan

Excellent full-on tour of Jordan, with its wonderful variety of scenic and historic attractions. The Jordanians were very welcoming, friendly and honest people. Organisation and itinerary were great, and our guide Nidal was excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

Most inspirational moments were in Petra, particularly the Monastery and the Wadi Farasa Trail from the High Place. Also floating in the Dead Sea, Wadi Rum and Jerash.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nidal was excellent in every respect. He arranged very good restaurants for our group dinners and good value lunch stops.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Alcoholic drinks were expensive when available. Jordanian wine is good but beer is bland.

A great week and a super country

This is a super trip if you are up for ‘moderate’ level cycling, want to visit a new country and are interested in seeing a village lifestyle that may well soon disappear. It is full of small but magical moments – overtaking horses and carts, waves from villagers, passing hi-fives with children and visits to the baker. the blacksmith, the mill, and being shown round a fortified church and a ruined abbey by the local priest. The scenery is great – for the first couple of days we would be cycling alongside snow-capped mountains. That then turns into the lush green hills of Transylvania. The first three days have the longest routes and we were glad that we’d done some hill training before the trip but we coped – although we were usually last we weren’t far behind! The routes are well planned and there is less traffic in Transylvania than on our previous cycle trips in western Europe. Some of the dirt roads are being tarmacked and will soon be smoother rides. The dinners in the small hotels / guests houses were very good as were our picnics and snacks during the day. The fortified churches are really interesting and, as a keen photographer, there were plenty of opportunities for good photos along the way. Btw, the bikes were fine!

Most Inspirational Moment

I'm split, so here are two: - Hearing cuckoos every day while cycling. I used to hear them at home as a boy - that doesn't happen now in southern England but it does in Transylvania at least in May! - Seeing the cows come home in Viscri. There we were, enjoying our food and wine at dinner, and our host says 'the cows are coming home'. Out we rush...what a surprise! Enjoy!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tudor is excellent, he's a very experienced guide, with super local knowledge, a nice friendly style and good focus on a safe trip. He made our last day - we chose not to visit Bran Castle and instead to go to Peles Castle but via Brasov. That was a super addition on his part. We'd been in villages and small towns. To visit a 'Saxon' city was great. The Black Church and the main square were both wonderful. Thank you Tudor. Our driver Lucien was great too and added to the vitality of our small group (post Covid and with war in Ukraine, we were six + guide and driver. There were no Covid issues or disruption. The Romanians have taken in many Ukrainian refugees and two families were staying at the church in Vulcan.)

Advice for Potential Travellers

The accommodation isn't in standard hotels - it's a mix of small hotels and guesthouses. There's something to like about every place but also the odd thing that isn't ideal but it all adds to the special nature of the trip. In a couple of guesthouses we shared a bathroom with another trip member and that worked fine. In Vulcan the room was a bit basic but the evening welcome from the priest was fab and, after a couple of glasses of welcoming schnaps, it didn't matter!
