Trails of Vietnam with Cambodia extension

This is an amazing trip that just kept on giving every day. The variety of activities was perfect, from walking around Hanoi, the boat trip to Halong Bay, cycling, stays in three different home stays, to watching the water puppets and overnight train journeys. This trip is at a leisurely pace, the hiking part is relatively easy walking and the cycling is on flat roads. The food in Vietnam is wonderful, everything cooked fresh with dishes to suit all dietary needs.

Most Inspirational Moment

There are so many inspirational moments. I particularly enjoyed the boat trip around Halong Bay. You won’t see such an amazing sight anywhere else. The contrast between Hanoi and Saigon, while not inspirational, is definitely an experience not to be missed. In both cities, the scooter is king of the road and the sheer number of them on the go at any time of the day or night is not to be missed. The Cu Chi Tunnels were extremely interesting and if you can manage it, definitely worth going down them.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Tu Vu was the best group leader I’ve ever had. Nothing was too much trouble for him. All he seemed to want was for us to have the most brilliant time ever and be safe at all times. He was a constant source of information telling us so much about Vietnam that you can’t get from a book. Tu also was very funny and we spent a number of evenings playing cards together having a great laugh. After 2 years of no tours, he seemed to just step straight back into the role as if there had been no break. He is also the youngest group leader I’ve ever had and had endless amounts of enthusiasm and energy. When monsoon rain caused flooding in Hue and Hoi An, our planned activities had to be cancelled. Tu very calmly made alternative arrangements with Exodus and kept us informed of these at all times. There was no sense of panic or not knowing what to do by him, just a very professional approach.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for constant traffic in both Hanoi and Saigon especially scooters. It’s an experience to be enjoyed not feared. Go with an open mind and you’ll have the most wonderful time. This is not a trip with a lot of difficult physical activity. If you can manage it, go to Cambodia as well but do check flight times as five days can be only three and a half days in reality.

Colours of Rajasthan October 2022

This was a really interesting, well-organised trip around the ‘Golden Triangle’ incorporating Delhi, Agra, Udaipur, Johdpur, Jaipur and lots in between. The focus is on the big sites such as the Taj Mahal (naturally) and the fort at Agra – but also includes Ranthambore national park, local markets and much more besides. Our Group leader was brilliant at adding colour and variety to our trip, and really enhanced the value we took from visiting a marvelous country.

Most Inspirational Moment

I really enjoyed the visit to Bundi; we stayed and ate in a heritage hotel; had a guided tour around the Palace which is a Hogwarts-style maze of rooms and courtyards climbing up the mountain dominating the town; visited the local tea shop for Masala chai; and dodged the chaos of the market to get home for an excellent dinner...

Thoughts on Group Leader

Raj Sharma was the best guide that I think I've ever had; knowledgeable, supremely organised, and very focused on making sure the tour group is getting the best from the trip. He was open to any line of questions (arranged marriages? politics? Indian history? the caste system?) and has a great sense of humour. I'd book him again in a heartbeat, and if you get the chance see if he's free for your tour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There's a lot of travel! We were a group aged between 61 and 72, and all pretty fit, but you have to have stamina to get through 2 weeks of pretty incessant coach journeys. And take Kindles / headphones / books... Some of the walking requires proper footwear (not boots) as it can be uneven and v dusty. ATMs can be a challenge - those who took Sterling/Dollars and converted it probably had an easier time than those of us relying on cards to withdraw cash - and forget contactless/credit cards

Jordan Holiday

We had a wonderful holiday in Jordan – lots of interesting things to see, an excellent tour leader, a high standard of very comfortable accommodation.

There were many very memorable moments but coming out of the Syk at Petra and seeing the Treasury stands out

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Mouayad, was brilliant and was a key factor in the holiday being so enjoyable. He is very knowledgeable about the history of Jordan and the locations we visited, speaks very good English, made sure that we had good local food experiences and just generally couldn't have looked after us better.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Getting cash from ATMs is expensive in terms of fees charged so would advise bringing cash or pre-loaded cards.

Enthralling Adventure

Fantastic trip. We travelled (admittedly some long drives) through the flat landscapes, dodging large herds of goats and sheep as well as horses and camels. Four visits to various nomad families gave us insights into their ways of life, and we sampled fermented cows’, mares’, and camels’ milk. We watched one family milk the mares, and rode camels near the sand dunes. Visits to Buddhist temples and museums gave us additional insights. The bronze age petroglyphs were a highlight, particularly those of tigers. The best bit was at the end of the trip, when we attended the Golden Eagle Festival. Watching men and women interact with their eagles was amazing, as were the other events, such as the tug-of-war with a goat skin.

Visiting the eagle hunter's family. The eleven year old boy was so obviously proud to have an eagle of his own.

Excellent. He handled some tricky situations with great wisdom and humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The Eagle Festival was very cold, -2C on the first day. Make sure to wear lots of layers, and bear in mind that there are no permanent buildings so it's not easy to get warm anywhere. However attendance by tourists was a quarter of pre-pandemic, so it was very easy to get a good spot to take photos.

Egypt - a 7000 year journey to the past

My first trip to Africa was a revelation! The history and archeological monuments of Egypt greatly exceeded my expectations. The culture is very different from North America and took a bit to get use to. Fortunately our Guide, Andrew N. , did a superb job of bridging the gap between our reality and theirs. Andrew was so much more than a guide , he is academic Egyptologist. We learned so much. Thank you Andrew. We visited over twenty major attractions in the 14 days, each one special and unique. We felt safe every step of the way and I have no problem recommending this trip to those who revel in ancient Egyptian and are not afraid to experience African culture .

Most Inspirational Moment

The major archeological sites. Giza pyramids, Luxor and the valley of the kings, Aswan with the monuments of Abul Simbel.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrew N. was excellent in every way. He has been doing these tours for 20 years and knows all the tricks, short cuts and the best things to watch for at each site. 11 out of 10 stars.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be careful about eating uncooked foods except at the best restaurants. We caught a stomach bug that threw us off for a few days. The guides have antibiotics in case. Take some plastic baggies and a soft sided lunch bag, as you are allowed to make a simple lunch at the provided breakfast. Often the tour does NOT stop for lunch.

Full on!

The trip was certainly full on, and you might want to arrive a day early to settle in. We had two early starts at 3.30am and the rest were around 8am. Accommodation was good and the cabin on the cruise ship was really nice. Breakfast was best and the rest of the meals were good and generous with lots of choice for vegetarians. The itinerary was as the trip notes. We were a group of 15 and gelled well which made the trip even nicer.

Most Inspirational Moment

Abu Simbel, Karnak, Luxor, Valley of the Kings, Aswan. All the visits were great both optional and included but I was truly blown away by Abu Simbel. We took the coach to Abu Simbel, it wasn't cheap but definitely worth it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tefa was great and extremely patient. He was always concerned about our wellbeing. If there was an issue with accommodation or food, he made sure it was sorted. He also spoke very good English so his explanation about the various excursions were very interesting. Top bloke.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just be prepared for the early starts and long hot days. You'll need sunscreen, hat and water. Fortunately, water was provided free throughout the trip. We didn't have much time to shop so if you find something you like at any of the site bazaars then go for it and haggle hard. Avoid buying anything at the Cairo souk/market as you'll come across nicer things during your trip. Accepted currencies: Egyptian pound, Sterling, Dollar and the Euro. The Egyptians live on tips so be prepared to be asked for tips for the smallest of things like taking a photo, going to the public loo etc. It's a good idea to take your own loo roll when on excursions as it's not always available and more often than not, the loos are pretty dirty.

Wonderful Experience

This trip was really amazing, we also had an absolutely wonderful Guide. There is such a great range of places, I had been worried about the amount of travel but all the journeys are an adventure themselves! The only thing is I think the activity level should be far lower, there was almost no exercise and anything there was was so leisurely. Really would reccomend

Great Trip In Spite of Weather!

We apparently had the worst weather, ever, for this cycle trip along the Atlantic coast of Portugal. After a year without rain in the region, we found ourselves fighting rain and high winds for a good portion of the tour. However, our group had a great time due, in large part, to our amazing team of Ruben, Armando and Tiago. In spite of the weather, they helped us to enjoy the amazing scenery, food and people of Portugal! They were extremely well organized and flexible when the weather was bad – even arranging to have downpours while we were inside having coffee/lunch 🙂 The kitty system for lunches was brilliant and the food was varied and delicious. Cycling was more difficult than expected due to conditions but still pleasant, for the most part on separated cycle paths and quiet country roads. With the exception of the Literary Man in Obidos, accommodations and dinner recommendations were excellent. Will definitely return for another bike trip to experience Portugal in the sun!

Ruben is an excellent group leader, head of a fantastic team that took great care of us. One of the best we have had with Exodus!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Spend time in the saddle before the trip. Though the cycling is not that difficult, long periods of riding can make for sore behinds.

Morocco's Great South October 2022

Amazing trip. We covered so many varied areas and types of terrain, from rocky desert to lush valleys. The six days of cycling were packed with fantastic views, challenging cycling, great company and accommodation that ranged from a Berber guesthouse to former palaces. Our guides and support staff were wonderful. We learned a lot about Moroccan culture, history and geography. The snacks and lunches were great with a focus on the local produce (nuts, fruit – dried and fresh – breads – vegetables). Who knew Morocco produced so much food. Be ready to experience the culture and the country in this trip and be well looked after by the supporting staff..

Most Inspirational Moment

The descents were thrilling and sunset from our hotel in Imouzzer, in the lush Paradise Vally was beautiful. The market in Essouaria and the dinner that night with Berber musicians. Too many great moments to cover.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Abdu was wonderful. Could not have asked for a better leader. Charming, so well educated, informative, always available and extremely fit. Nothing seemed like an effort for him. Hassan his assistant was always supportive, sweeping up those of us at the rear of the group. Great sense of humour. Mustapha - wonderful driver - especially on the narrow, winding roads. We had some amusing Google translate conversations with him. Khalid along with Mustapha prepared wonderful snacks and lunches for us. We were lucky to have such a great support crew.

Advice for Potential Travellers

As a triathlete who has done her fair shore of Gran Fondos, I thought I would have no problem with the cycling. However six consecutive days on hybrid bikes over terrain that had demanding climbs - very few flats and if it was flat -there was a headwind!!! LOL. Be prepared.
