September 2022 trip

An interesting holiday but I would have liked to have spent less time in Montenegro and more time in Albania and Kosovo. The cycling was generally good, but I was surprised by the number of busy roads used and I would personally rate this trip higher than 4 out of 7 considering the amount of climbing involved. The Giant hybrid bikes provided were very robust, but rather slow and heavy, which could be frustrating on a long mountain climb. Bring your own bike if you can if you enjoy climbing. The standard of the hotels was generally good, with only a few poor quality hotels in Montenegro.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dimitri our guide was excellent, as was our support driver.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I personally would not recommend this trip if you are vegetarian (as I am) and certainly not if you are vegan. Vegetarian options were limited and vegan options generally non-existent. It is not mentioned within the trip notes, but I would recommend bringing a set of good quality bike lights as you cycle through a number of unlit tunnels and the lights provided were poor quality. I would also recommend bringing along a GPS cycle computer if you have one to allow you to better judge distances, road gradients etc. and a set of SPD pedals if you usually ride clipless. It is also worth noting that it can get very cold up in the mountains where it was two degree Celsius the morning we set off from Zabljak. I would therefore recommend packing a pair of leggings and warm hat and gloves.

Great trip

Booked this trip as a last minute as the one I wanted to go on was not going ahead. I was not disappointed as this trip was very good and worth the price. The chalet (Chocolat) was cosy and had good views at the back of the mountains, great after a day hiking and sitting in the hot tub. The hosts who catered for us (Marta and Neil) were excellent and cooked some authentic meals , 3 course every night. They also baked a cake for the return of every day out. The treks and trails were beautiful and had stunning views. Would recommend as a good trip especially for beginners.

Most Inspirational Moment

Every walk was as good as the others so they all stood out.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Good leader, could of talked a bit more when out on trips but a friendly guide. Very helpful if needed.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The only thing I would check is when you get the flight times. We had to be out the chalet at 08-30 on the last day and we was dropped at the airport. Our flight was not until 17-40 so had to come up with something or would have been sitting waiting for hours. If we had known in advance then could of planned what to see in Geneva but as last minute kinda winged it.

Highly recommended this trip

Opportunity to see plenty of wildlife in different settings. One day is extremely long (driving the route) . However the different environments of Botswana and Zimbabwe give a great varierty of opportunities to see wildlife in different settings. The trip is well planned. The activity days are full on but there is time to rest. The accommodation is varied however everywhere is spotlessly clean. Food is plentiful and there is variety even if there are dietary requirements.
The guides-local and tour leaders are extremely knowledgeable.
The wild camping in the Okavango delta is spectacular. The support staff and guides are amazing.
Would recommend the helicopter flight over the delta .
I would highly recommend this trip to people who don’t want just a safari. It’s a great adventure.

Most Inspirational Moment

The mokoros and camping in the Okavango delta was magical. Seeing rhino in Matopos was humbling. The dinner cruise on the Zambesi is a agreat end of tour dinner- especially as you get to see wildlife too.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Onary lacked confidence to begin with. I understand he hadn't done this tour before but had done elements of it. After the first 3 days he became more confident. It helped having Sophiso to support Onary to begin with. Onary was extremely knowledgeable about wildlife, plants etc. He was a great chef in the Delta. He was kind and solicitous and ensured solo travellers were supported. He was open and honest and answered all questions- even political ones.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There is only one long travel day. However need to be agile enough to get in and out of safari vehicles. The heat adds extra physical stress so travellers will want to consider this if you have underlying health issues.

Beautiful trip and Wonderful Guide

Just returned from Highlights of Provence. It was a wonderful trip in some beautiful country. Highlights from the trip were the Verdon Gorge and the climb above Moustiers Ste Marie. Our small group made learning from the guide very easy.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Verdon gorge walk was beautiful.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Isabelle was an exceptional leader and able to improvise when a few things went wrong. She was extremely knowledgeable and kind.

Excellent!

An excellent trip. Enjoyed every moment of it and was so sad to leave at the end. Laughed more than I have done in years and feel like I was away for months. We saw so much in the 9 days. I felt at home in Jordan from the moment I arrived. I will definitely be heading back to Jordan and booking another Exodus Edits trip! Thanks for having me!

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing Petra (the treasury) for the first time, stargazing in the desert, the cooking class, learning a Jordanian dance in Wadi Rum, hopping all over the discarded trains in the desert, zooming through the desert on Jeeps.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was absolutely brilliant. Very good sense of humour and it was very important to him for us to get a good sense and understanding of Jordanian culture. He was always contactable if anybody had a question/problem (I.e in moments when he wasn’t physically with us). I felt like he genuinely enjoyed spending time with us and wanted us to get the most out of our trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I definitely overpacked warm clothes thinking that the desert would be colder at night than it was (October). Apart from that I would just say go with an open mind and say yes to all opportunities.

George Clooney

If you are an occasional cyclist then this would be a nice trip, but there are some serious climbs on days 4 and 5 to tackle, but the views are worth it. That said, there is also a lot of flat riding on cycle paths that can get tiresome and mundane. Michele was an excellent guide with lots of little stories and anecdotes to tell. The hotels are ok, with possible exception of Verona which was a bit basic, an upgrade or two would be preferable.

Most Inspirational Moment

For me, as a regular cyclist, cycling days 4 & 5 were the best as it involved some hill climbing with spectacular ridge rides, views and descents, especially between Vicenza and Nanto. Unfortunately after Nanto it’s pan flat for 35km with very little of interest until you arrive in Padova.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We’ve been on a trip with Michele before, so we knew what to expect from him. Very friendly and lots of useful stories to tell. Remember to play “buzzword bingo” and listen out for ‘Fidel Castro’, ‘Mussolini’, ‘Romans’, ‘George Clooney’, then shout “house” (or maybe it’s “villa”). Mark was also extremely helpful when my wife came off her bike and had to go to hospital for treatment, staying with her and acting as interpreter.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you can’t or don’t want to climb a 5km hill under your own pedal power (there are at least 2) then you’ll want an e-bike.

Classic Dolomites Walking Holiday

What a wonderful trip ! An exciting walking adventure with a wonderful guide, magnificent scenery , a great group of likeminded hikers and an awesome hotel

Most Inspirational Moment

On our " rest day " the trip up the Via Ferrata of Monte Paterno was a never to be forgotten experience.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rob was brilliant ! Calm, very professional, experienced, and knowledgeable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't forget your swimmers for the hotel pool and spa

Steep walks, good food, great guide!

This was a great holiday walking in lovely countryside by the coast and visiting the picturesque villages of the Cinque Terre and Portofino. The walks themselves were usually very steep and would not suit everyone, a good level of fitness is required although you don’t need to be a mountaineer. The hotel in Moneglia is on the beach and we were able to swim after the walk every day. I was away during the first week of October, I didn’t see any rain and the average daily temperature was 24-25C but the previous week had been wet so no guarantees!

Most Inspirational Moment

Completing the steepest walk up and down to Riomaggiore

Thoughts on Group Leader

Michela was an excellent leader, nothing was too much trouble for her and her organisational skills were exemplary. She was also very knowledgeable about the area we were in and happily fielded a multitude of questions. It's fair to say that she was responsible for making the holiday as enjoyable as it was.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Try and get some hill walking in at home before you arrive in Italy.

Fantastic Trip

The itinerary looked good but the trip exceeded expectations. Superb mix of activities, locations and accommodation.
Good group who got on well and mucked in when needed.
Amazing scenery and saw all the Big5 and much more besides.
Blyde River Canyon, Eswatini and, of course, the Drakensburg were all stunning.
Weather good although walking in 30c+ was a challenge and needed regular rehydration.
Challenging walks with most of the group agreeing a moderate rating is misleading.Seeing leopards, after 2 previously unsuccessful trips, as we were almost out of the Kruger and completing the BIg5 on our last game drive at St Lucia.
Otherwise the hike to Witsieshoek via the challenging Witsieshoek Crack with boulder scambling and ladders.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrew Lindsay was outstanding in every aspect. Probably the best Leader we have travelled with.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The Trip Notes need updating and I have advised Exodus where there are issues such as printed Covid certificates required for Eswatini and the tree canopy optional having not run for 3 years. The walk rating also needs to be looked at both in terms of rating and distances as the number of GPS gadgets used by the group always showed distances higher than stated.

Don't Hesitate - do this trip !

Overall, this was a fantastic trip, best one I have done yet.
First impression, met Rit, our team leader at the hotel. Immediately knew this was going to be a good trip, knowledgeable, warm, funny, engaging.
First couple of Days in Thailand were good, roads reasonably quiet and good quality surface. A couple of long rides, but pretty flat so easily coped. Just a personal preference, but a bit more on the country roads rather than main (although they were quiet) would be nice.
Smooth transition into Cambodia. Again, great cycling, pretty flat and easy. Great countryside. Awe inspiring visit to Angkor – astonishing place. Then the flip side visiting the Killing fields, more pertinent as I can remember this happening while I was a teenager.
Then into Vietnam for the last few days – best cycling here with backroads and paths, via a nice homestay to the craziness of Saigon (so many motorbikes!)

Overall – Great food everywhere, always felt safe, super team leader, made some new friends – highly recommend.

Most Inspirational Moment

Angkor wat - one to tick off the bucket list.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rit is a great guy. Professionally - Everything ran so smoothly you almost didn't notice all of the work behind the scenes. Personally - Very warm, engaging, caring. A happy man who was truly part of the experience. We always felt safe in his hands.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It's Hot / Humid Take a bucket of factor 50, drink lots to stay hydrated when cycling, your choice water or local beer Toilets were immaculate everywhere - have no fears
