CYCLE INDOCHINA & ANGKOR

An excellent way of visiting three exotic countries.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were insperational moments every day, i.e: Riding along the countryside together with the lovely people in the group. The homestay in Mekong delta - being out into the jungle - listening to the sounds of the animals in the night. The wonder of Angkor Wat.Learning about the horror of Killing fields.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rit was a marvellous leader: he always tried to do the best for us. Always nice and smiling and caring. He is the best!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring padded shorts and suncreamBring dollars, small notesArrive one day ahead to cope with the jetlagBring small gifts to give to the local children on your wayJust book now - it's a wonderful trip

PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI

A returnee, a disciple or just mad? Well that’s all me I guess – I just love going back to the Kicheche camps on a Photographic trip with the …… (how many adjectives can I use here?) Paul Goldstein! I return because each time the trip delivers, great camp and staff, great guides, great company, great sightings – just how many greats are there!

Most Inspirational Moment

For me - it was finally seeing a caracal - and not just seeing it - but spending time with her as she went about her business, not bothered by us and our wonderment.Of course I also have to mention the day-old lion cubs and the 3-week old leopard cubs (and once again Kicheche went the extra mile to allow us to spend time with them! - thanks).  Can I also mention the Abyssinian Roller too - just another visitor to the Camp - no not really - must've been on a stop-over!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paul Goldstein - well it's all been said before! I go back on trips with him - so that says it all really I think! The guides are truly amazing and are still delighted/moved by the things they themselves see.The Camp managers and staff go out of their way to ensure that everyone has a top stay!

Advice for Potential Travellers

All the usual advice - be prepared for anything and everything - rewarding long days out, plenty of stops, plenty to drink and eat! Great laundry service!

CYCLE INDOCHINA & ANGKOR

Another superbly organised trip thanks to Exodus and our local guides and support staff. So many positives can not think of a better way to avoid two weeks of cold wet weather in the UK in January.

Most Inspirational Moment

Long cycling rides in 35+ degree temperatures through rural villages, being waived to and smiled at by the friendly locals, the amazing sites of the Wats, the sadness of the killing fields and S21, the interesting history of the Cu Chi Tunnels, nice hotels, good food (and plenty of it), a night on an island in the Mekong Delta, relaxed and quiet with a cold beer on the verandah and even a cooking lesson if you want it, great travelling companions and last but certainly not least, a great tour leader (Rit).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our tour leader Rit was superb. He was cool, calm and collected at all times, friendly, helpful and always smiling. Nothing was too much trouble for him and he was always availble to help with any problems that arose (not that there were very many of those). He was well supported by the teams in each of the three countries we visited and a special mention to Mr Black (owner of the cycle hire company in Thailand) and also Mr Nod, who cycled at the back of the pack to ensure no one was left behind. Mr Black was also an accomplished photographer and took thousands of excellent photos of everybody in the group as we cycled along. Also a BIG thankyou to Rit and the team who organised a surpirse ice cream birthday cake and photo slideshow for my partner at the evening meal. Also a thank you to Mr Lam in Vietnam for letting us visit his home village for lunch with his family and being very informative during our Vietnam visit.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't overpack - there are two places to do laundry on the trip so you really only need 7 days of clothing.Ensure you bring some insect spray (Deet) many of us were bitten by mozzies.Bring a 32gb usb memory stick as Mr Black (see above) is happy to put all of the photos / videos of the group on it for you, alternatively he does put them on facebook as well. When you go to the Cu Chi tunnels, there is the opportunity to fire some guns at a firing range, you are offered the empty shells as a souvenir, but as I found out at the airport on departure you will most likely be stopped and have them removed (slightly worrying at the time)As you will be visitng three countries an exhange rate convertor app on your phone would be useful.Bring a day pack for carrying your essentials, cameras, sun lotion etc, but you won't need to cycle with it (leave in the support vehicle) we had regualr stops when cycling and the refreshments provided - fresh fuit, choc bars, peanut brittle etc and cold water were plentiful. There are also rehydration sachets available so no need to bring those.

A holiday to remember

A fantastic journey through three very varied countries: rural Thailand with its green fields and rolling hills, hectic city life meets ancient temples in Cambodia – and the meeting of the two that is Vietnam. It’s a real treat for cyclists and history buffs alike in a part of the world with a fascinating but thought-provoking and sometimes harrowing past.

Most Inspirational Moment

The local people were the biggest inspiration; many of them live humble, uncluttered lives, work hard and seem genuinely happy. Others – such as our guide at the Killing Fields – had been directly affected by conflict but used their experience to really bring the country’s history to life. Also worthy of a mention was the day on which I heard the most beautiful music coming from a forest which ran alongside the road. I thought it was a temple - or someone playing an instrument during a break from their work. It was truly a magical moment, when – from behind the trees – emerged a couple of blokes in a van piled high with bric-a-brac with their radio on…

Thoughts on Group Leader

From the moment we arrived - after almost a day in transit – to our farewells at Ho Chi Minh airport, Rit’s cheerful demeanour, sense of humour and absolute professionalism stood out. He is passionate about cycling and I had complete confidence that he’d make sure we had fun but stayed safe from any crazy drivers while out and about. Nothing was ever too much bother for Rit – he was there at breakfast to answer any questions or offer a bit of sympathy in return for tales of ‘undulating’ bellies. He made sure we knew how to get our laundry done or where we could find water and snacks. There’s no doubt that looking after the welfare of 18 people and managing three different driving crews is a huge responsibility, but Rit is so well-organised and such a people person it seems to come naturally. I was really touched by the birthday cake he and the Thailand guys arranged for my 40th – it was a lovely thought.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You’ll have the opportunity to use the excellent local laundry services both in Siem Reap and HCMC so don’t overpack!Don’t try to bring your spent gun shells home from the Cu Chi tunnels – they will be confiscated by airport security and you'll face a long walk back to the freedom of the departure gateDollars are widely accepted in Cambodia (bring low denominations), but I found it easier to use local currency in Thailand and Vietnam. The food is often served warm rather than piping hot – it took a bit of getting used to!

CYCLE INDOCHINA & ANGKOR

An absolutely brilliant trip! Full of sights, sounds, tastes, impressions of all kinds. I would do it again anytime.

Most Inspirational Moment

There was no specific moment, because the trip was full of them - all the time, morning, afternoon and night. Off course there were  well known, spectacular highlights of different kinds like the Angkor area in Siem Reap, the terrible story of the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng in Phnom Pehn, the Cu Chi viet cong tunnels in Saigon and so on. But for me the greatest part of the trip was the cycling outside the cities, in the rural areas and the small villages. The hearty velcome of the people who lives there, the glimpse into their lives, the amazing activities of all kinds along the road, the changing landscape and different roads  - amazing!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group's slogan: "Rit is our favouRITe" sums it all up.Rit (Saowarit Aphiwatthanakul) is the perfect group leader, well organized, caring and responsible. He called us his "Cycling Family", and that is what he made us feel like - a big happy cycling family. Rit is not a big man, but he has a natural authority paired with the biggest smile ever - great guy!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just do it, you will never regret it! Do not be afraid of the cycling! This trip is suitable for all levels as there always is a bus and a truck following  - are you tired one day, you can sit in the bus. The routes are very well planned with little traffic.Remember: - Padded cycling shorts - 2 if you have, because you WILL get sweaty!- Cycling gloves as your hands will get burnt- Sun cream and -BLOCK- Bag to attach to the bike for camera etc - important!- US Dollars in small notes- GPS if you have- You can wash clothes cheap and very good at lokal laundries at least two times along the trip- Small gifts two the numerous children that you will meet along the way. We brought With us a small travelling mascot, the IKEA bear, the kids LOVED him and I would have liked to be able to give away some of those.....

KILIMANJARO RONGAI ROUTE

Quite simply if you enjoy the ‘great outdoors’ and the mountains plus a challenge this is the trip for you. It is not a holiday but an ‘experience’.

Most Inspirational Moment

Obviously reaching the 3 objectives of Gilmans, Stella and the actual Peak. Viewing the Glaciers betwen Stella and the Peak. Plus having those photos taken at the top especially when you consider it is the 10th highest in the world.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Charles was superb. Everything he said to the best of my knowledge proved to be correct and he was able to address every little difficulty which arose, and the chances and law of averages dictate there will be some on a trek such as this. I was personaly pleased he identified my altitude sicknes symptoms early and brought the oxygen bottle out to administer immediate relief.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Even if you an experienced traveller/trekker read the trip notes carefully before making your decisions on kit etc and when on the trek take note of the advice provided by the Trek Leader and assistants. They have undertaken this trek in some cases 100s of times. They know better than you.

SOUTH AFRICA: CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

A wonderfull way of experiencing the Western Cape of South Africa. Superb cycle rides, great food , marveloous cheap wine and some lovely people. Truly a memorable holiday and just one long party.

Most Inspirational Moment

Standing on the viewpoint at the top of Chapmans Peak Drive on the last day with all nine friends ( the group plus Tallis the guide), looking down and seeing at the bottom of the cliff a Southerm Wright Whale and her albino calf. The perfect happy way to bring the tour to its conclusion.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Well for an Africaans lad Tallis is not a bad cook ! Seriously,  became more a friend than a member of staff. Organized, helpful & considerate and a great knowledge of his suroundings. Patience in the extreme with our one difficult member.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Try the Pinotage red wine - SA`s own red wine cultivar - brilliant !If your travelling to The Cape at Christmas dont bring warm cloths - not needed ! Plenty of sunblock, aftersun, lip-ice and a little stick of mosquito repellant (Tabard the local prouct is best).

CYCLE INDOCHINA & ANGKOR

This trip was brilliant, great variety, great cycling, fantastic food and accommodation that exceeded expectations!

Most Inspirational Moment

Completely confronting but at the same time thought provoking was the Killing Fields and S21. Stimulated thought of how best to help people still impacted by these experiences. Most scenic and amazing was of course Angkor Wat!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rit was absolutely fantastic. Our comfort and safety was a priority to him and he always ensured we looked after ourselves and our belongings. He had the most calm and caring nature and was genuinely interested in our happiness and enjoyment. I would highly recommend Rit as the tour leader for any group. Rit added an extra dimension to the trip, truly making it a trip of a lifetime! The trip was so well organised and ran so smoothly!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Gel bike seat, gel bike gloves and padded cycling pants a must!

KILIMANJARO RONGAI ROUTE

Overall this was a well organised trip and in general met most of my expectations. This was my first trip with Exodus and I booked it with them based on word of mouth advice from others. As I didn’t plan to come back to Kilimanjaro another day, I wanted to make sure I booked with a serious company in order to increase the probability of a summit success.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the summit. The Rongai route itself was beautiful and offered a diverse and amazing scenery. It is less crowded than the other routes which was one of the reasons why I chose this route. The porters were absolutely amazing and did a sublime job, always friendly, helpful and professional. The food was good too and there was enough of it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

As mentioned I found the porters very friendly and helpful, but I tend to say that I found our local head guide a little arrogant, especially on the summit day. The other guides were brilliant! Also I did not like the head guide's attitude and so called guidance on the tipping. On arrival the guide who met us at the airport and hotel gave us a tipping sheet with the recommendations. On the last day our head guide on the mountain more or less told us that it was mandatory to go with these amounts to the different group of staff (helping porters, supporting porters, cook, guides, head guide). To me a porter is a porter, no matter if he is a helping or a supporting porter, how will I tell the difference? Maybe the head guide was so keen on the tipping part as he himself was on top of the tipping sheet with the highest recommended tipping amount!?! Anyway we told him otherwise that it was entirely up to the climbers how to tip!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would recommend to book the trip through Exodus without the group flights and organise this yourself. Preferable you should go with another airline than the one Exodus use. Exodus use Ethiopian Airlines and I have to say that never have I experienced such a horrible airline. The staff was ruder than rude and so incompetent and unprofessional. I have travelled a lot all over the world, also in less developed countries, and this was by far the most horrible airline I have experienced.I would receommend to consider a Kilimanjaro trip that takes in 1-2 additional days on the mountain, as I found the acclimatisation a little tough (getting headache and nausea) . You will enjoy it a lot more if you spend 6 days going up instead of the 4 days this trip offer.

CUBAN HIGHLIGHTS RIDE

Wow! My first trip with Exodus and it won’t be my last. My first trip to Cuba and it won’t be my last. My first Group holiday and it won’t be my last. Taking this trip ranks alongside some of the very best decisions I’ve taken and I can’t recommend this trip highly enough!

Most Inspirational Moment

I really can't single out one inspirational moment, so I've identified 10 reasons why this trip will live in my memory for a long, long time and why I would recommend this trip to anyone reading this review.1. Exodus made everything so easy. As a first time group holiday traveller, I was unsure what to expect but the support from Exodus staff, the quality of the Trip Notes and the joining instructions, the help with additional extras like airport hotel/parking made this so so easy. I will never use any other company for the many more trips I now plan to take.2. Cuba - wow, what a fascinating country to visit. Full of contradiction, full of authenticity, full of inspiration and warmth, full of beauty and of history and full of fun and laughter. The scenery was beautiful, the climate warm and pleasant for cycling. I can't recommend Cuba enough - go now before it gets spolit by westernisation in the future.3. Cycling - I've never experienced such pleasurable cycling. The roads are a joy to cycle in as there is so little traffic on much of the roads this trip uses. What traffic there is respects cyclists and is quite content to stay behind the riders and only overtake when it is very safe to do so. Even then, they give you a wide birth and you never feel at risk like you do in the UK much of the time. The weather was great, the scenery stunning, the amount of cycling generally ok if a little light (for me) on day 1 and day 4. The level is mostly 'easy' with occasional 'moderate' patches such as the final 8k uphill climb on day 5. The bus was never far away if anyone wanted to take a rest, so have no fear about joining this trip if you are concerned about your ability to keep up. This really is accessible to all who have a reasonable base fitness.4. Food - I read much about Cuba being a 'poor' culinary experience. Nonsense! Sure, if you're expecting nouvel cuisine or gastronomic delights and michelin standards then you will probably be disappointed. But the food was in the main very tasty, plentiful, nutricious and satisfying. Exactly what you want when cycling in my opinion. My only quibble would be the lack of option for vegetarians since most meals had simple chicken or beef to go with the rice, beans and potatoes.5. Fellow Travellers - what can I say about my fellow travellers? As this was my first group holiday, I was a little apprehensive that I would be joining lots of couples or big groups travelling together. I also feared my fitness would be short of the group's, or that I would be the 'old man' of the group. I needn't have feared. This trip seems to attract people of all ages, from 20s/30s right through to a gentleman in his 70s who was more than able to keep pace. There were couples, there were solo travellers, there were cyclists and there were non-cyclists. It really was a mixed group. What everyone had in common was that they were fun people to be with. I never for one moment felt alone, and the trip was undoubtedly made so amazing by the people I had the pleasure of being with.  6. The Trip Leader - Tony was a great trip leader. Excellent English, great knowledge of Cuba, warm and friendly, sensitive to the level of the group and their needs, supportive and helpful at all times, Tony did a lot to make this trip feel safe, well organised, fun and interesting. I particularly liked the way Tony listened to what the group wanted to do on the last night in Havana, and rather than insisting that the whole group did the same thing, he supported everyone's desire to make the most of the last night and do thier own thing in old havana. Given that many didn't have extra nights to explore, this was definitely very welcome by most of the group.7. The Music - I've never listened much to Cuban music, and I'm not much of a dancer. But I was overwhelmed by the stunning music in Cuba. From street music in and around squares and next restaurants to the huge array of restaurants, bars and clubs where music is the soul of the place. Highlights included having a performance by Son Malibran while the group had dinner in Trinidad, a group so engaging and fun that they had us joining them as honorary band members for a song. Then there was the Legendarios del Guajirito show in Havana which seems to be associated to the Buena Vista Social Club, sharing many of the same musicians. Stunning show, stunning music and just impossible not to get off your feet and dance. I can count on one hand the number of times I've danced in the last 10 years, and that night was the best of them without a doubt.8. The logistical support - Our bus was always close by and always there in case anyone needed a rest, some water, some fruit or to get sun screen or anything else off the bus. We had a great technical support man who was quickly able to deal with the very few issues we had; punctures, chains coming off, severed pedal. At times, he was also able to lend a hand 'pushing' flaggers up the 'undulations', very welcome by those who were close to getting on the bus on the hills but really didn't want to.9. Trinidad and the Casa Particular - Trinidad is such a fun and authentic place to spend a couple of nights. The personal owners of the Casa could not have been more welcoming, could not have done more to make our stay in their home fun and memorable. I would always choose a Casa for future Cuban trips. The atmosphere on the streets was one of fun - not the faintest undercurrent of tension or trouble, just masses of people happy to dance, laugh, chat, engage and welcome us into their town. Everywhere there were vintage cars, delightful little stalls and shops, music coming from yet another bar / club / restaurant. Fantastic place.10. The fire eating, glass treading, salsa teaching mad-man who provided the brooding, mysterious entertainment in the hotel at Yuguanabo. Turns out he's also the egg chef at breakfast the next day. Great fun!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tony was a great trip leader. Advice for Potential Travellers

Go to Cuba now before it changes! Take some snacks for the flight out to Cuba if travelling direct from Gatwick to Havana. The Virgin food, while tasty, is meagre in portion size and given the flight is into prevailing winds, quite a long one and so I felt overly hungry by the time we finally got through immigration. Be patient when going through immigration, it's slow.
