The Exodus Travels Foundation Updates

On the Ground Updates from the Exodus Travels Foundation

We may be living in unprecedented times, but this doesn’t mean our support has stopped. As a business, we will continue to do our part to improve life in harder to reach places across the globe through the Exodus Travels Foundation.

We are actively seeking new ways to support, while heeding the advice from our government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to ensure our expert tour leaders, colleagues and people are safe during this time. This may mean adapting and repurposing our funding in order to support local communities that need our help more than ever before.

Using this platform, we’d like to share our ongoing updates on the foundation’s sustainable projects and what’s currently happening on the ground.

A Message from the Chairman of the Board

Peter Burrell, former Managing Director and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Exodus Travels Foundation, shares his thoughts on the COVID-19 crisis:

“The Coronavirus outbreak has effectively changed the fabric of how we live. Having worked with Exodus Travels for well over 30 years, I have seen many troubling and sometimes heart-breaking times, from tsunamis that devastated the coast of Sri Lanka and other SE Asia nations to the horrendous aftermath of the Nepal Earthquake to name but two.

For both these disasters, we immediately tried to do our bit to alleviate suffering and help to rebuild the fractured lives of the many who were affected. However, the onset of COVID-19 is an entirely different threat.

At Exodus, our charitable foundation’s mission is to ‘harness the power of travel to improve life in hard-to-reach places’. So, with worldwide tourism virtually at a standstill, what can we do to help? We have spent years working closely with our partners overseas, many in remote areas and poverty-stricken countries that are not able to provide the same “safety nets” for their citizens that we have come to expect. In places like Nepal, India, Peru and Tanzania our leaders, staff and operators have lost their livelihoods overnight with very few ways to replace them.

So, we are now working with our partners across our destinations to adapt and expand our Foundation programmes to best support communities most negatively impacted by the COVID-19 crisis and the resulting halt in tourism. Below are a few examples. With countrywide “lockdowns” currently in place in many destinations, we are not yet able to do as much as we would like. However, we will continue to work on these plans and keep you all updated as soon as we can logistically make them a reality. We’d like to take this moment to thank you, our travellers, for your continuous support during these extremely challenging times.”
