Where to Travel in September

For those who don’t like crowds, Europe is the best place to travel in September when it’s still warm but much quieter. Elsewhere, Canada is enticing, and things are warming up in South Africa

FRANCE

It’s grape harvesting season

As the summer temperatures subside in France, the winemakers’ thoughts turn to harvest season, where the juicy grapes are plucked from their vines. It’s a pleasant time of year for a walking or cycling holiday, whether you’re getting to know the Loire Valley by foot or exploring the region on two wheels. At the end of the day, reward yourself with a well-earned glass of local wine.

INDONESIA

Enjoy sunshine and wildlife sightings

In September, Indonesia is transitioning from the dry to wet season, but most regions will still benefit from relatively dry, sunny weather. There are also fewer crowds than in the summer, so you can ride past villages, temples and glistening rice paddies largely undisturbed. Orangutans are more active this month, while the cold-blooded Komodo dragons also enjoy lounging in the sun, making this a good time to see wildlife.

SOUTH AFRICA

An optimum time for wildlife and wildflowers

While many choose to visit Cape Town and the surrounding region when it’s hottest and driest between November and February, travelling to South Africa in September is ideal. The temperatures are beginning to climb and vegetation thins out making animals easier to spot around watering holes in Kruger National Park. This month is also great for viewing southern right whales off the coast of Hermanus.

GREECE

Extend your summer in the Greek sunshine

September is one of the best times to visit Greece. The intensity of July and August’s sun has faded, but it’s still comfortably warm – and the sea temperature remains mild if you’re understandably drawn to the sparkling water. It’s typically quieter as children have returned to school, leaving famous sights less crowded and the cycle routes we use far more pleasant than when the temperatures are at their peak.

CANADA

Watch the salmon run

Coincide your visit with the start of the salmon run, where you might be lucky enough to spot bears hunting for migrating fish in British Columbia. Vancouver Island is a great place to witness this spectacle. September is also the prime whale-watching season when you can scan the water for orca, humpback, and grey whales. Experience these incredible wildlife sights for yourself on the west coast of Canada.

ITALY

Enjoy Italy at its most relaxed

September is one of the best times to visit Italy, as the summer heat softens and the crowds begin to ease. In Tuscany, vineyards are heavy with grapes as harvest season gets underway, creating a beautiful backdrop for active adventures, such as walking or cycling. Meanwhile, the beaches of Sardinia remain warm and inviting, with quieter shores and crystal-clear waters.
