“Portugal has an extensive network of cycling and trekking routes. If you’re struggling to narrow it down, I’d recommend travelling to the Algarve in October and November, when the weather is still great for hiking and cycling and you will have the place to yourself. Explore by bike on our Lisbon to the Algarve ride or hike on our Walking Portugal’s Wild Algarve trip. ”

Portugal’s Mediterranean climate makes it an inviting destination all year round, but the best time to visit depends on the experiences you’re looking for:
March to May: One of the most pleasant times to travel, with mild temperatures and blooming landscapes. Perfect for walking tours in the Douro Valley, cycling and exploring historic cities like Lisbon and Porto before the summer crowds arrive.
June to August: Expect warm, sunny days and clear skies, especially along the Algarve coast, where temperatures can soar. During this time it’s best to plan active adventures for the cooler mornings.
September to November: Warm and dry in most regions, with fewer tourists. A great season for wine-tasting in the Douro, hiking and coastal walks with comfortable temperatures.
December to February: Milder than most of Europe, especially in the south. Perfect for cultural sightseeing in Lisbon or visiting the Algarve, though northern areas can be cooler and wetter.
Regardless of the season you choose, our expertly designed small group Portugal tours are designed to match the best local conditions, from scenic hikes and cycling routes to wine-tasting and cultural discoveries.

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to walking in Portugal, from dramatic coastal routes to quieter inland trails. Although we’re in love with the entire country, these are a few of our favourite places for walking trips in Portugal:
Madeira – With sprawling coastlines, imposing mountains and a sub-tropical climate, Madeira makes an ideal year-round hiking destination. Nature lovers will be in their element with the 120 endemic species of flora and fauna that can be found here.
The Azores – This scenic archipelago is made up of ancient walking trails once used by locals and their horses to transport agricultural produce. Having been restored over the years, these paths now lead hikers among breath-taking landscapes.
Douro Valley – When walking in Portugal, the Douro Valley is high on the list of places to explore. The UNESCO-listed valley is home to the country’s premier wine region which is believed to date back to 2,000 years. As well as walking through the terraced vineyards and verdant countryside, you’ll learn about the region’s history before sampling the wines.
The Wild West – Known as Portugal’s Wild West, the Sagres Peninsula comprises golden beaches, wildflower meadows and scented pine forests where you can spot endemic and migratory species of birds circling overhead. The Rota Vicentina is a network of trails that winds up to the Cabo de Sao Vicente lighthouse where you can enjoy spellbinding views.
Our tours are designed to be accessible for most active travellers, but we assign an Activity Level to every trip to help you choose your perfect adventure based on your ability and preferences.
In Portugal most trips are rated between Easy and Moderate, with most of the cycling and walking holidays sitting at the Moderate end of the scale.
Travellers with a reasonable level of fitness can enjoy our walking holidays, but if you’re not a regular walker it’s recommended to start with a Level 1 or 2 holiday.
If you prefer to opt out of an activity, your Tour Leader can suggest alternatives.
Cycling holidays graded Moderate tend to be best suited to cyclists with good fitness and some previous experience of longer rides.
Try the Azores Adventure for a Level 4 activity based holiday (Moderate and Challenging).
If you’re unsure which trip matches your fitness level, speak to our team of experts who can help you choose the right itinerary.

Picture yourself wandering the streets of medieval villages and towns, tasting delectable pastéis de nata, and strolling along golden beaches lapped by emerald waters.
Portugal is generally considered a safe destination to travel in. However, like any destination, it’s essential to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings. During the trip your guide provides safety tips for activities, free time, and local etiquette, helping you feel confident throughout. The main safety factors to be aware of are theft, especially in tourist hotspots, and safety when swimming in the sea. As you would in your home country, make sure to keep valuables secure and be vigilant when using roads and the country’s beaches.
If you have specific safety concerns before you book, our team of experts will be happy to discuss them.

Susanne Maden Walking the Island of MadeiraWe have had this trip on our radar for a few years but had been put off by poor reviews of both the leader & some of the hotels but we decided to take the plunge & finally book it & we were so glad that we did!
We were blessed with having a great group who bonded well together & having Paulo as our leader which made for a fantastic holiday!
The walks were all different, from rugged coastal walks to Levadas & magical forests which gave us a true taste of Madeira. Paulo took us to local villages to experience the culture & learn about the history of the island.
The hotels were all different in style;- The Dom Pedro is very dated & despite paying for an upgrade, our room was not very nice! The Pestana Casino Studios we liked for their quirky decoration & big rooms although others in our group found them too noisy! For us, the Aqua Natura Hotel was amazing from the fantastic oceon views, the natural salt water pools & lovely food!
We felt that the whole holiday was well planned, taken at a relaxed place & tailored to everybodies needs; the trip exceeded our expectations!
Lilian Kim Portuguese Camino Highlights WalkThis trip blends the best of the coastal route from Porto with the stunning, lesser-known Spiritual Variant trail. Hiking over 100 km (62 miles) along the Portuguese Camino Highlights Walk was challenging but very rewarding. The coastal walks offered stunning views of the coastline and ocean and I loved walking through the quaint fishing villages along the coast. The Stone & Water trail and the Spiritual Variant trail offered stunning scenery, peaceful forests, rivers, and charming medieval villages and country towns along the way.
The food was a highlight too—fresh seafood and traditional local dishes at every stop. I highly recommend trying local dishes such as Galician Pulpo (octopus), Galician scallops (in the shell), and Padron peppers! On Day 5 and 6, we stayed at Villa Covelo and stumbled upon a local restaurant called, O Recuncho do lolo, and had an incredible local experience here! The owner Graciela was so hospitable and kind that we dined there two evenings in a row! You must try her cheesecake (she sold us by telling us it was the best in the world- and it very well might be!)
The accommodations at A Casa Antiga do Monte and Hotel Melo Alvim were cozy, historic, and full of character.
If you’re thinking about doing a “highlights version” of the Camino, this Exodus trip is the perfect way to do it! 🙂
Leslie Byrnes Walking the Island of MadeiraWhat an excellent trip! The hikes varied in terrain and vistas, from coastal walks to levadas to mystical forests to mountain tops, but all were spectacular and each day was as good as or better than the one before. Paulo was a wonderful guide, knowledgeable about the island, its history, culture, flora and fauna. We were fortunate to have very good weather, and even more fortunate to have a group that gelled beautifully. Not only did everyone get along well, but everyone was fit and hiked at a similar pace. (We understand from other reviews that that’s not always the case.) First hotel in Machico was pretty dated, but good location and breakfast. The hotel at Porto Moniz was the best of the trip, modern, well-equipped, great food – and right across the road from volcanic pools. Very scenic. The hotel in Funchal was fine and in a great location.
