Central America holidays: Three of the best

1. Costa Rica: The country’s astonishing ecosystem accounts for 50% of the world’s animal and plant species, and on a trip with Exodus you can explore the full spectrum through a range of activities. Zip-line in the mist-shrouded canopies of the cloud forest, where the roars of howler monkeys resonate through the hills; glide through the tranquil canals of Tortuguero National Park; or bathe in natural hot springs while marvelling at Arenal Volcano.

2. Cuba: It’s a heady cocktail of vintage cars and cigars, faded colonial mansions and steamy cellar bars, soundtracked by the beat of salsa wafting through city streets. There’s a raw and colourful beauty to Cuba that’s impossible not to love. And with little traffic, it’s perfect to explore by bike. Stay in casas particulares, and gain a real insight into the lives of local people. Exodus will take you to the heart of the action.

3. Mexico: Tropical jungles, palm-fringed beaches, Indian markets, colonial towns and the majestic ruins of the Aztecs and Mayans… Mexico is a fantastic country of contrasts. Take time to explore the Yucatan Peninsula, where you’ll find the extraordinary ruins of Chichen Itza, Palenque and Tulum.

This was the first trip to Central America for my wife & me. The group size was only nine, so not too large which helped a lot when it came to looking through one mono scope at yet another new bird. The trip mainly involved birdwatching, though bathing in hot springs, a river & the Pacific ocean were features. The hotels were all to a good standard, however, the Suria hotel had a limited menu for all four main meals. Distances travelled were generally less than 5 hours, however, one day that was exceeded when a bridge partially collapsed. We visited tropical & rainforest as well as cloud forest & mountane (transitional) climates. Our amazing guide David, helped us to spot literally hundreds of birds & he was so knowledgeable & enthusiastic. He also ensured any problems were dealt with diligently & effectively. This was truly an incredible adventure & we can thoroughly recommend it.
