- Where to Travel in December
For a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime adventure, the best place to travel in December has got to be Antarctica. But if you’re eyeing warmer climes, the Middle East is an excellent option in December.
ITALIAN DOLOMITES
Enjoy a winter wonderland
The Dolomites are great in December for cross-country skiing, with a superb network of pre-cut tracks throughout the region, combining flat, easy routes and challenging descents. Or why not try a winter hiking adventure in Italy, using snowshoes to navigate routes beneath the jagged peaks? In December, there’s also time to visit the annual Christmas market for cups of traditional mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and local handicrafts.
OMAN
The Pearl of Arabia at its best
December is Oman’s coolest month, but it’s not too chilly. If you’re looking to avoid the heat experienced at other times of the year, average temperatures hover in the mid-twenties, which is ideal for sightseeing and exploring. You can comfortably walk around the country’s ancient castles and mud-brick villages, marvel at the scenic highlights of Jebel Shams over the Grand Canyon of Arabia or take a 4X4 journey over the dunes of Wahiba Sands.
UGANDA
Prime time for spotting gorillas
Temperatures in Uganda remain consistent year-round, but certain times of year are better for wildlife viewing. December is one of the drier and sunnier months, making conditions optimal for trekking to see mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and grey-cheeked mangabeys. It’s also a great time to see tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park, as during the dry season these cats are more likely to hide from the midday heat and mosquitoes. Book early as gorilla permits are limited.
BHUTAN
Where Faith Comes to Life
Bhutan is alive with a special spirit in December. This is the time of Trongsa Tshechu, the kingdom’s oldest and most sacred festival, set in the grand Trongsa Dzong. The Himalayas are the backdrop as monks in vivid silk robes swirl through masked dances. Witness the unveiling of the Thongdrol, a giant appliqué tapestry – a moment of stillness, awe and deep cultural meaning. Join our special Trongsa Festival departure to experience the magic for yourself.
ANTARCTICA
See penguin chicks and seal pups
It’s the peak of summer in Antarctica, and there’s almost perpetual daylight, which means there’s more time to view wildlife. In December, humpback whales migrate back to feed on krill, and the first adélie and gentoo penguin chicks begin to hatch, making this an exciting time to visit. December is also a peak time for spotting elephant seals in South Georgia and witnessing huge groups of king penguin colonies.
CYPRUS
Enjoy a mild Christmas
Cyprus is a great choice if you’re looking for warmer climates around Christmas time. Temperatures are mild and comfortable sitting around 16C-20C. The island is also less crowded during this time, so you’ll have sites like the Kyrenia Castle, Incirli Cave and the Salamis Ruins in Famagusta largely to yourself. Travelling in the festive season means there are also opportunities to try traditional Cypriot biscuits, such as melomakarona and kourabiedes.
