This 5-night holiday in North Norfolk offers an introduction to this charming region full of natural highlights and historical sites.

You start and finish your holiday just outside Kings Lynn and will ride through low-lying landscapes through traditional villages and along quiet country lanes. After riding along the tree-lined avenues of the Sandringham Estate keen birdwatchers can visit RSPB Snettisham which attracts waders, ducks and geese. The high tide creates a great wildlife spectacle, as thousands of birds are forced off the vast mudflats of The Wash onto the reserve's lagoons. Visit Houghton Hall, once home to Sir Robert Walpole before arriving at your next overnight stop. Head to the Norfolk Coast AONB with its endless beaches backed by dunes and spend the next two nights in the Georgian market town of Holt, from where you can explore more of the coast with visits to Sheringham or Cromer or head to the Norfolk Broads. Accommodation is in a range of 4 star hotels, with on-site restaurants or a choice of places to eat locally.

Arrive at your hotel, just outside of Kings Lynn.

After your briefing you can choose your route for the day. All routes go through Castle Rising where you'll pass the fortifications which gave the village its name. Then, follow tree-lined avenues through the Sandringham Estate. The routes now split with the choice of going via Snettisham, with an optional extension to RSPB Snettisham, or to the lavendar fields at Heacham and on to the wide sandy beaches of the Wash. The routes then rejoin to pass Houghton Hall, a splendid Palladian house built by Sir Robert Walpole, Great Britain's first Prime Minister before arriving at your overnight stop.

Today your route takes you on quiet country lanes to the Norfolk Coast AONB. Explore Holkham Hall, an 18th Century Palladian-style mansion and continue through Holkham National Nature Reserve through the dunes to the beach at Wells. Follow the promenade along the estuary to Wells-next-the-Sea, a pretty harbour town with plenty of options for lunch. Follow gravel tracks and lanes to reach the monastic ruins of Binham Priory, founded in 1091 and continue to Holt, a Georgian market town where you will spend the next 2 nights.

A range of routes are available to you today - Ride to the coast and the villages of Morston and Blakeney from where you can take boat trips to see the seals, or take the North Norfolk Railway steam train (payable locally) to Sheringham, from where you'll cycle on to Cromer. Or head towards the Blickling Estate, with a Jacobean red brick mansion and on to Aylsham from where you have the option of taking the steam train to Wroxham where you can go on a boat trip on the Norfolk Broads.

Today cycle through a series of villages on quiet country lanes. Visit the Steam Museum at Thursford, with the world's largest collection of steam engines and organs. Cycle on through Little Walsingham, a place of religious pilgrimage with the Basilica of Our Lady of Walsingham just outside the village. Cycle back through the Sandringham Estate to the hotel.

North Norfolk is known for its fresh seafood from Brancaster mussels, to Cromer crab. There are also artisan cheeses available as well as the best malting barley in the country resulting in amazing ales.

Weather

Norfolk is located in the East of England and the county has a temperate climate with typically warm rather than hot summers and cool to cold winters. Rainfall on average falls fairly evenly throughout the year, the driest month is February and the wettest is October.
The weather is unpredictable as with the rest of the UK and it is possible to see elements of all four seasons in one day.

Vehicle Support: This is a self-guided trip for those who prefer to cycle independently, but with our assistance to take out the stress of the logistics and planning. We arrange your accommodations, provide you with a map and route notes so that you can cycle at your own pace, while your bags are transported from one hotel to the next. Your bikes will be delivered to the start hotel, all set up relevant to your height and ready to go. Our local agent will be on call throughout the trip should you need.

It is important that you are happy reading maps and following route notes, we make these as accurate as possible and they are regularly checked. Where possible we stick to cycle tracks and quiet roads to make the journeys as pleasant as possible, however, on occasion we have to use busier routes into larger towns and cities.

As this is a self-guided holiday there is no group and no leader. There maybe others on the same departure date as you, but you will not be organised together. The route notes contain a 24-hour emergency assistance telephone number should you need it and in emergencies, the local agent is normally able to dispatch a taxi or pick you up themselves. They may wish to charge for this service.

Families
Self-guided cycling holidays are a perfect option for families as they offer the freedom for you to take your holiday at your own pace. You can stop as and when you want and need, at the cafes and restaurants that suit your family and the sites that interest you. We have suggested that 12yrs is the minimum age for this trip, but as it is self-guided and you will be leading your own family we will ultimately leave this decision up to you. The daily distances are all published in the trip notes along with a description of each day's cycling so you have a good idea of what to expect. However, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact one of our experts. The principle idea is that these holidays can be as flexible as you like, with logistical support but no group or leader to dictate the daily activities. Please consider the weather when choosing to book, temperatures can be high in the middle of summer.
