GALAPAGOS & AMAZON

A very full holiday that combined the museums and architecture of colonial Quito with an extraordinary variety  of wildlife and habitat.

Most Inspirational Moment

watching the giant otters in the Anangu creek, and snorkelling in the 'turtle garden' at Fernandina Island.

Thoughts on Group Leader

All good.  The leader in Napo (the Amazon basin) was outstanding. The leader in Quito was a mine of interesting local chat on political and social subjects.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The schedule is focussed on the Amazon basin and the Galapagos, but Quito itself is also a treat.  It has a charming colonial old town, some wonderfully over-decorated baroque churches, as well as some good museums (the Museo Casa del Alabado is not the most famous, but should not be overlooked).  The local guide organised a morning tour of Quito, which was good, but is very brief.  Bear in mind that Quito is high (>2,800 m, and >4,000 m at the top of the cable car), so take it easy and allow a day or two extra.   Get up early to visit; the best weather seems to last no more than the morning. Rain and thunderstorms punctuated every afternoon.  It is also worth considering the optional excursion to the cloud forest, if only for the variety of humming birds, although there is much more to be seen -  provided it is not too cloudy.  This is normally a day tour, and slightly unsatisfactory as it is a 2.5 h drive each way, and one arrives too late for the best of the weather and the bird-spotting.  One couple solved this by arranging to spend the night there in the interval between the Napo valley and the Galapagos.  A number of us thought that Exodus is missing a trick by not offering this as an extra.

PETRA & WADI RUM BY BIKE

I had to use my annual leave by the end of the year, I’d always wanted to read a paper in the Dead Sea and to see Petra and I don’t like sitting still – so a week biking round Jordan sounded promising – and it was.  It lived up to and indeed beyond my expectations.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching 40 mph on my bike on one of the (many) down hill stretches.

Thoughts on Group Leader

A one off -  conscientious, caring and thorough and with more stories about Jordan, donkeys, polygamy and prophets than I'd dreamed of.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go.

CYCLE THE BACKROADS OF SRI LANKA

Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with warm and friendly people who made us feel welcome everywhere we went. Our cycling trip enabled us to see the scenery and learn alot about its culture and history.

Most Inspirational Moment

Riding along the mud roads between the villages and the paddy fields showed us a way of life so differnt to ours in the UK.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was excellent and attentive to all our needs. He was rightly proud of his country and keen for us to immerse ourselves in its culture, sample the local food, and learn of its history.

THE TROPICAL SOUTH

The guide Agi, driver and asssistant were all excellent and turned a very average quality trip into a good one.

Most Inspirational Moment

Agi was the most inspriational part of the trip. He was amazing at sorting out problems and adding so much to the trip. The local people were on average incredibly friendly.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic!!!!!! Simple as that.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Expect basic rooms, I would say european 2 star on average. I think on average  the group was disappointed with the accomodation, especially the river boats, they were very poor quality. Take insect spray, hand wash and baby wipes.

ANNAPURNA SANCTUARY

A thoroughly enjoyable breathtaking Himalayan trek.

Most Inspirational Moment

Spectacular views from Poon Hill and Annapurna Base camp.Beautiful views from the the World Peace Stupa above Pokhara.Changu Narayan temple above Bhaktapur was fantastic.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Prem was excellent, a good organiser.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Layers, layers, layers (its cold up at ABC).Wet wipes and tissues ++I wish I had had a face mask in our kit (the trails can be pretty choked with dust).Flip flops or similar for showers, many of which are in a seperate building from the tea houses - facilities fairly basic. In Katmandhu, opposite side of road 30yds to the right of Royal Singi Hotel, is a well stocked supermarket, in case you have forgotten anything.Leave out Chitwan extension, unless you are desperate to see a few rhinos up close. 2 of the 3 days are spent in taxi travel to/from Chitwan. In the 3 day extension we only had 2 hours of safari. Not recommended.

PETRA & WADI RUM BY BIKE

A Great mix of cycling, culture and history. Fantastic downhills through moon scape scenery. Petra is amazing. Wadi Rum is stunning.

Most Inspirational Moment

Full moon in Wadi Rum. The light, the mountains, the group. Amazing. The mud at the Dead Sea. The photos are great.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Danny was brilliant. Full of knowledge and passion for Jordan.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The first two days of cycling are mainly downhill. The fourth day cycling has five climbs which are a challenge. It was also very windy so bring warm layers if going in Winter. The views are worth the effort.Petra is big! You will need the two days to get around it all. For those who want a beer at the end of the day remember Jordan is a Mulim country. Alcohol is available at hotel bars but not at most of the restaurants. It is also very expensive (£5 for a beer or glass of wine) There can be tax and service added, 26%.

CYCLING THROUGH RAJASTHAN

This was my first cycling holiday and it was fantastic a real achievement and wonderful experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling through the villages and the wide open spaces with a total feeling of freedom and peace.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sanjay and Harish were simply amazing, the whole team were.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for long days. Just go for it, you'll have a great time.

EVEREST BASE CAMP

The accommodation and flights were greatly organised, the places we stayed were very pleasant with friendly staff and good food (no one in the group ended up with stomach sickness). We had of  the earliest flights to/from Lukla  what was great, so as soon as the weather cleared off we were one of the first ones to go. What was disappointing was the attitude of group leader and some of the sherpas (Uba was the exception) when I started to be slower than the rest of the group (the comments like you have to change the gear were not very encouraging and not very much in line with a recommendation to stick to your own pace to avoid AMS).

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do stick to your pace and you will make it, do not let the group pressure to distroy your trip. It is amazing experience and the views up there are just incredible.

Reply from Exodus

We were disappointed to read Viera’s review as the feedback we receive about our Nepalese staff is usually fantastic. On this trek there is always enough staff who are happy to stay with clients who want to walk at a slower pace. It is important that everyone reaches the teahouses during daylight hours, but we are really sorry if this led to Viera feeling rushed at times.

A TASTE OF CUBA

Fascinating trip; great guide & driver; smashing group of fellow travellers; wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this trip!

Most Inspirational Moment

Can't pick out one experience above the many others, to be honest.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fan-blooming'-tastic! Not an easy job but handled everything really well. ABCD - Above and Beyond the Call of Duty.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It's worth taking some snacks & don't expect haute cuisine, but you won't go hungry. Go with an open political mind.
