The southernmost state of Mexico, Chiapas is a fascinating mix of cool highlands, coast and tropical forest. Some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country are found here – top of the list is the magnificent 1,500m-deep Sumidero Canyon. Chiapas is also home to many of the finest sites of the Mayans and there’s a unique cultural mix here, of modern Mexico and the beliefs of the people who lived here before the Spanish arrived. This is best witnessed in San Cristóbal de las Casas, a delightful town high in the hills, which we visit on our Chiapas tours.
