Fantastic Sardinia June 2016 Guided Cycling tour

An excellent, well organised trip, with stunningly beautiful coastal rides and some challenging climbs, a great group of people where all got on very well , excellent tour guide Michele and fantastic support from Ado,

Most Inspirational Moment

Encouragement from our guide Michele as he encouraged, motivated and supported us in some quite difficult climbs. And the safety and relief in knowing that reliable Ado in the support vehicle would be there to help you and take care of you, if you needed it!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our Group leader Michele was encouraging, informative, professional, fun, spoke excellent English, had a great sense of humour, and was very supportive to all the group. Michele was supported by Ado Sanna, who was friendly, extremely helpful, generous, kind and he looked after everybody well, particularly on the more challenging elements of the tour. Nothing was too much trouble for these guys and we were thoroughly looked after. They made our holiday the more enjoyable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a great tour. It is graded as moderate. I would say that days 2 and 3 are challenging in the heat and need a reasonable level of fitness to enjoy.

Walking in Mallorca - May 2016

My brother and I booked the “Walking in Mallorca” holiday and we went in mid-May as we knew the weather would be nice but not too hot for walking. The flight from Gatwick was hassle-free and we were met by our guide at Palma Airport and transferred to the hotel in Port de Soller. The hotel was nice but the room could have been cleaned a little better (our bathroom bin hadn’t been emptied and the floor not swept) and the beds were a bit too hard. We also had a problem with the air con, which was fixed the day after we reported it. The breakfast was good with a wide variety of options to choose from. On the Thursday we transferred to the Lluc Monastery, which was simple yet peaceful and comfortable, although an extra pillow would have been welcome. On our last day we were helpfully taken back to the airport by our guide. As the monastery is quite remote and ideally you need a car to explore the area, I feel we could have gone back to Palma earlier than our check-in time requirement rather than waited at the monastery for several hours with little to do so that we could have explored some of the city instead (e.g. the cathedral) before our flight home. Unfortunately the check-in process at Palma took much longer than at Gatwick and our flight was also delayed by just over an hour, which was frustrating after a nice holiday.

The walking aspect of the holiday was described as moderate difficulty and the distances/ascents given in advance, which was very useful. Although I consider myself reasonably fit, I did struggle a little bit with some of the walks due to the humidity and where the climbing was quite steep and slippery under foot. However, the guide was very helpful and supportive on these occasions and adjusted the pace of the walk accordingly. In future I would probably choose to do an “easy” level holiday so that we have more free time to explore the surroundings (e.g. it would have been nice to have spent more time in Valldemossa).

Overall we had a very pleasant and memorable holiday and would definitely return to Mallorca. I would also consider booking with Exodus again.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the summit of Puig d'en Galileu (1181m), one of the island's highest peaks. The coastal walk along a mule trail to Cala Tuent was also very impressive.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide was Eduard, who was very knowledgeable about the island's social and political history, flora, fauna and bird life as well as local information (e.g. restaurants). He expertly led us on a range of walks that encompassed the best aspects of the island - the coast, mountains, forests and olive/citrus groves. His humour kept our spirits up during the difficult moments and he was very thoughtful when it came to preparing the picnics each day, making sure that the spread included a range of Mallorcan fayre.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would particularly recommend the Sa Font Coberta restaurant at Lluc Monastery: the traditional, home-cooked food was great and the owner was incredibly friendly and accommodating. Walking poles are advisable to help with the tougher ascents and descents.

Walking the Great Wall of China

I have waited for the last 3 years to go on this trip having been stopped by one thing or another, but now I have finally done it and it was everything that I had hoped for and more. It was tiring, it was exhausting, it was Magic. The whole thing from start to finish was perfect, (well apart from the flight home) the guide met me at the airport and looked after me until he dropped me off to catch my flight home, thank you Jerry.

Most Inspirational Moment

There was nothing that stood out on its own, the whole thing was a blast from start to finish. The bus ride through the streets of China, the various home stays that were used, the food and the quantity of it, the scenery from the Wall and the watch towers, even the climb up from the road to the Wall was breath taking in more ways than one. No there was not one thing there was many.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jerry was the group leader, a first class chap he was too, a constant flow of information no matter where we were and with an answer to all the questions about the Wall, the tombs, the forbidden city. He kept a constant check on us all the time with updates on what we would be doing and what we could expect on our next track. I dont know what your other group leaders are like but if they are like Jerry then you will have no complaints.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There are a few things that I would like to pass on, firstly if you are thinking of walking the Wall do it ASAP as it is being rebuilt bit by bit and I would guess that it wont be too long before it will have all been done. The other thing I would mention is that the Wall is not flat, in fact you will find if it is not going up at an alarming angle it will be going down in a similar manner, there is very little that is anything like flat. The best thing that you could do to train for this walk is to climb up and down stairs and I mean tens of hundreds, our first walk on the Wall was up 1000 steps just to get to the base of the Wall, I had trained but not for that and it almost stoped me. But it didnt and after I made it to the top the views were worth it. My advice is train on stairs, good luck on your trip

Tuscany

Lovely relaxed accommodation at a lush green small working farm. Really easy to relax – good walks on different mountain ranges & even if the weather is not fantastic there are other things to do within an hours travel if you decide to duck out of a day & take it a bit easy

Most Inspirational Moment

There was not one specific one but there were a number of moments on the trip that stand out due to the walks, a fantastic walk leader & a really good group of people on the holiday.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very knowledgeable, well traveled and inspirational

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you want good walking, accommodation in a relaxed quiet environment just out of the way of the hustle & bustle of a town then give it a go - you shouldn't be disappointed

Walking the Amalfi Coast

Just returned from a lovely trip to the Amalfi coast. It was beautiful scenery, lovely weather, a great group of people, brilliant walks, great food… the list could go on..
The hotel is very accommodating, the food is plentiful and of high standard. The pizza is gorgeous.

Most Inspirational Moment

The views from the balcony of the Villa in Ravello... stunning ! Closely followed by the Walk of the Gods...

Thoughts on Group Leader

Severio was fab. A great organiser.. Considered everyone in the group, and made sure that all abilities were catered for.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Its going to be harder than you think.... its a lot of steps, both up and down... not easy walking.. maybe leisurely pace but you still need to put the effort in. Definitely recommend walking poles. But all worth it for the views .

Highlights of Mount Blanc in bad weather

This was a terrible weather week. The mountains were visible on our arrival and for about 30 minutes on our free day. I had an injury that kept me from hiking, but everyday I welcomed a bedraggled group. Their reviews varied from awful to nice walk, but no views.

Most Inspirational Moment

The gondola up to the Aguille de Midi. The views were spectacular. But these were on our own.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Not the appropriate leader for non-climbers (which he is). I don't know how flexible the trip was, but the weather (the week that paris had its floods) dampened everything. The free day should have been switched with another day, for it had the best weather. Our guide went climbing with friends. I had asked our guide, as I couldn't hike, as to whether there were any drop off points that I could return from by myself. The opportunity to go to Italy was sprung on me as the group left. I couldn't manage that fast; I found that irritating.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pick a season of least rain.

walking the amalfi coast

Amazing views with pretty walks along the coast. Hotel nice and well-equipped.

Most Inspirational Moment

Various views along the walks.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Compared to my last guide, I thought Sevi was good. Compared to another group walking at the same time, we coveted their guide, who constantly gave some bits of information that our group found useful. Sevi was solitious of folks having trouble with the walk. Without a comparison, I would have scored him highly. He could have had a better base of history and politics of the area that he was willing to impart. My last guide (in Chamonix) was not good.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a walking trip in the hills, sometimes with big steps and skree. The trail tested the fitness of different members. My group was very tolerant of those who lagged. On the other hand, where was there to go.

Mont Blanc Highlights

I recently went on this trip and as per usual I enjoyed another Exodus adventure. We enjoyed sunny days, blue skies and warm weather for early June. Lots of snowy mountain tops all around us. The timing was perfect as the previous two weeks were showers, bleak days.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing Mont Blanc from our Chalet windows and being surrounded by snowy mountain tops. The Alpine flowers were wonderful.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nick was very professional and knew this area.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The days were quite warm and sunny for early June considering there had been a late winter. We got sunburnt a couple of days. Don't be disappointed if it rains We did have some brief showers but nothing to spoil our daily walking. It was raining the Saturday we departed so maybe the next group would have had rain. The previous group to us had rain. We just had a lucky week with good weather.

Evia - a true gem on the second largest Greek island (who knew?)

Just an hour away from the port of Rafina is the unspoilt island of Evia. A really lovely destination for walkers and Greek island hoppers alike.

Most Inspirational Moment

The final day's walk is long but a nice end to the trip. Meeting some of the proud Evia residents was inspirational, very versatile and industrious people from the hotelier who has a farm and makes the cheese at breakfast, to the fisherman who not only fishes but rescues animals, and the lady who hosts jazz and music festivals at the local historic vineyard estate.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Cecile was great, calm and collected, just the right balance.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It is rough enough terrain with a lot of undergrowth on the hills, so bring long trousers and some antiseptic creams. Walking poles aren't mandatory but I would recommend them.

Amalfi Coast

An excellent trek in a wonderful area with absolutely stunning scenery. Highly recommended.

Most Inspirational Moment

The most inspirational day was the last day when we did the Walk of the Gods.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was highly knowledgeable and experienced. She went the extra mile to ensure that we had as much information as possible. She had clearly worked very hard to build relationships with local businesses and took us to some wonderful places by prior arrangement. She was also good fun and made sure that everyone was able to fully participate, whatever their level of fitness.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My advice would be do some training on climbing and descending steps before you go.
