October 2023

I was very disappointed with our Exodus Trip. The Canadian webpage says that you will be staying in Hotel la Tavernetta, which is a 4-star hotel in Scopello. And that you will be in Daniela’s B&B in San Vito Lo Capo. We didn’t stay in either of these hotels. I didn’t find out that we were not staying in either of these hotels until I had paid in full. I emailed several times once I got my itinerary to ask why. I was told the website had just not been updated. Well, it is still not updated. I chose Exodus as I heard that they chose upgraded hotels and were a cut above other travel operators. Then right off the bat, the hotels were disappointing. I have travelled a fair bit – but mostly independently – so this was the first time using a tour operator. It is much more expensive to use a tour operator – and I truly do not see any value that was provided. It could have been so much better than it was.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get as much information before you trip as possible. There is a need to plan out your day and truly understand the walk.

Trip of a Lifetime

Peru is a fascinating country and this trip explores varied terrains including urban areas, mountains, high plains, lake and rainforest. The local people we met on the trip were extremely welcoming and friendly. The country does have an issue with litter on the roadside, even in the National Park areas which is sad to see. Hopefully in time this will improve.

Most Inspirational Moment

Has to be Machu Picchu! That first sighting as you reach the Sun Gate on the Inca Trail really does take your breath away, an image to live long in the memory.

Our tour leader Paul Garrido did an amazing job of organising, guiding, informing and assisting. He was with us from arrival at Lima airport to departing for home. Nothing was too much trouble and he made it clear he was contactable 24 hours a day. His lively personality really made it feel as though he was one of the group, and I genuinely believe he was a significant factor in the trip being so memorable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't underestimate the potential issues related to being at altitude. You may experience some mild effects - I woke up in the mornings with a headache, but this could be alleviated with a couple of paracetamol. Embrace the culture. Dine on alpaca and guinea pig (unless you're vegetarian) even if you don't order it a second time. Drink at least one Pisco sour.

Vietnam & Angkor- Premium Adventure

The trip gave us an excellent insight into both Vietnam and Cambodia (culturally & historically) and was most enjoyable.

Most Inspirational Moment

Ha Long Bay, Hoi An and the Cu Chi Tunnels. We also learnt about the dreadful long-term effects of Agent Orange affecting second and third generations. We were prepared by having read 'Vietnam (An Epic History of a Tragic War)' by Max Hastings.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Than Vu was exceptional and ensured that Shelagh was provided with the necessary support throughout the time in Vietnam. He was very knowledgeable and happy to discuss the war and politics. Phan Sotheavy was also very solicitous and happy to give historical background

Cape Town and the Garden Route - Premium Adventure

Excellent accommodation, well organised, fabulous experiences . Our guide, Petro, was fantastic, not only making sure all arrangements in order but also sharing with us her in-depth knowledge of South Africa’s  history & culture

Most Inspirational Moment

All but especially Amakhala Game Reserve & Stellenbosch. Accommodations at Stellenbosch, Amakhala & Cape Town were excellent

Thoughts on Group Leader

Petro was a fantastic group leader and would do anything to help. She had everything well organised & gave us a wonderful insight into the culture & history of South Africa. She socialised with the group & made it such a fun, interesting trip. A great asset to Exodus

The ideal India experience

This is not a trip for the faint-hearted : but if you are ok in temperatures of 30 degrees and over; you are a keen cyclist, can cycle 100km and cope with frenetic and unruly city traffic; you have an interest in foreign culture and religion ; and you have a strong tolerance of pungent smells this is the trip for you! I went prepared for this…..and thought it was great!

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting the amazing Hindu temples in Thanjavur after dark, beautifully floodlit, and being fortunate enough to see a performance of traditional dance there.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Shekar was a very good leader, always thinking of ways to make our expedition more memorable and more enjoyable. Nothing was too much trouble and the things we did and the places we went to were very interesting.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I found a rear mirror very useful..... partly to ensure that there was always somebody behind me which was good for my morale !...... And partly in navigating the city traffic and knowing when it was bad time to pull out !

Highlights ofTurkeu

Good driver. Excellent guide. Hotels well chosen. Itinerary great. Initial Airport pickup bit chaotic.

Most Inspirational Moment

The archeological sites.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go

Excellent

This is the first trip I have done when I haven’t felt ready to come home. Vietnam was a delight and a surprise, not how I expected it to be at all, but that is why we travel. I would have loved to have stayed longer to explore the mountains, especially in the company of our wonderful guide Thanh Vu who made every day a treat. There is only a little time in Cambodia, just the temples of Siem Reap, but it was long enough for us to realise that these two countries, despite being so close together, have different cultures and different feels to them. I would not hesitate to recommend this trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Maybe places where it was quiet such as the very top of Marble Mountain and watching the sunset from the top of the boat in Ha Long Bay when the day trip boats had left. Meeting the victims of Agent Orange at the craft works was sobering, as were the Cu Che tunnels and the War Museum; difficult, but necessary, inspiring to see how humanity can prevail.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both Thanh Vu in Vietnam and Theavy in Cambodia were excellent. They had different styles, but then the countries cultures are very different. They were both great company and I felt I could trust them implicitly. There didn’t seem to be a question that they couldn’t answer and their English was very good. Theavy had some great ideas for photographs which she took delight in helping us with.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don’t underestimate how sapping the humidity can be, the free times were welcome to help us recoup. Be aware that there is some hopping on and off of little boats to do; and the wooden staircases around Siem Reap can be a raking angle and rarely have handrails. A degree of nimbleness is useful to make the most of this trip. On the plane from Vietnam to Cambodia, the flight crew will issue you with Customs and Immigration forms. The forms are tiny; be ready with spectacles, a pen, and maybe a crib sheet with your passport number and the address of the Siem Reap hotel.

India's Golden Triangle

Every aspect was brilliant from the information ahead of the trip, the local guides and the programme of events. I felt as thought I had 3 weeks of interesting experiences packed into 1. Excellent.

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved meeting the villagers in Suroth riding on the back of the camel cart and the Maharaja's palace with the wresting and guide by the son. Also the Taj Mahal. However, every expedition was excellent and smoothly arranged.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Naveen was an excellent leader. Everything was smooth. He was easy to understand and always had time to answer questions.

Jordan to Egypt: Nabateans & Pharaohs

We’ve been on a few trips now and always found the content of the initier interesting and allows us to sample local culture and see very interesting views, buildings and customs, the guides are local, communicate well and enthusiastic about their countries and the historical context has always been well conveyed. From airport pickup to airport drop-off accomodation, food and transport has been spot on.

Most Inspirational Moment

If I have to chose, for Jordan the day in Petra and the time in Wadi Rum. For Egypt the pyramids, our time in the Nubian lodge and Abu Simbel temple. Also the couple of hours tacking North up the Nile on the sail boat. That was so peaceful. Also Luxor Temple by night was special. Experiencing the shear size of the monuments and sites helps understand the magnificent achievements of builders and engineers in their construction

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both leaders had a very good sense of humour
