WALKING THE AMALFI COAST

The combination of beautiful walks and interesting visits in good company with a superb leader would have been sufficient for a good holiday! Add a comfortable hotel providing fresh, local, seasonal food and it becomes an excellent one.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many! But being in glorious countryside with far-reaching views was a highlight.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine is wonderful! She was always cheerful and encouraging, full of knowledge of the area which she loves and shares with enthusiasm.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It's a wonderful holiday - don't hesitate! Walking with a pole was helpful.

DUBROVNIK & THE DALMATIAN COAST

This was a delightful, mildly active and varied holiday, with beautiful towns and stunning coastline to visit.  A good mix of countryside, towns and culture, and time to enjoy some of the places on our own.  My only critcism is that it really needed to be a day or two longer.

Most Inspirational Moment

Undoubtedly walking round the city walls of Dubrovnik in the late afternoon sunshine.  The red tiled roofs stood out against the sparkling blue of the Adriatic sea - a photographer's paradise.  The walk round the city walls is optional, but was a highlight for me - definitely worth taking one's time over this.  The optional day trip to Mostar in Bosnia was also well worth doing, in spite of the long drive.  The small town of Mostar was bustling with tourism, but it was worth spending time in the museum and watching the little film to get a bit of a feel for the history of the bridge and what it meant to the people - you could not help being moved by this.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was fun, engaging and informed.  He was a good organiser, in spite of our being such a big group, was very amenable and eager to please.  Full marks!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware that this is really a 6 day holiday, not actually 8 days as billed, as you arrive in the evening and depart in the morning.  Be prepared for some very busy local bus trips, as the Dubrovnik hotel is way out of the city.

CARPATHIAN CULTURE AND WILDLIFE

So much more than just a walking holiday!  Friendly B&B, spectacular scenery, gorgeous European Brown Bears, interesting tours (Bear Sanctuary, Bran castle & Saxon ruins) yummy food and great Romanian wine. Who could ask for more!?!?

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting the Bear Sanctuary

Thoughts on Group Leader

A local with good historical knowledge.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a dark outfit if going to the optional Bear Hide.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - LEMOSHO ROUTE

An amazing experience – a trip of a lift time that was made by the great group of people and the fantastic guides. Reaching Stella Point as the sun was rising is something I will never forget and made the final trek to Uhuru Peak that much easier. Our head guide Henry was superb as were his assistant guides, Double V, Hans, Ricardo, Halida and Emanuel. Without their support, encourage and positivity I would have struggled to make that final push to the top. Thank you all in helping me achieve my goal of climbing Kilimanjaro.

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing the Barracho Wall was awesome, looking at the people ahead of us and realising we had to follow them up the path was amazing. Reaching the top after 2 hours was one of the highlights of the trip, but actually climbing up the wall was one of the most daunting 2 hours of my life!As we climbed towards Stella Point the guides kept us motivated and focused and everytime someone asked ' how much further' the reply came back, 'not much further now, keep going'. Their positive psychology made the 9 hour climb seems so much shorter and the welcome cup  of tea when we reached Stella Point made the final climb to Uhuru Peak that much easier. The overall organisation of the trip was superb, the tents up when we arrived, fantastic food throughout the trip and the welcome cup of tea at 6.30am every morning made the whole trip so stress free.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our Head Guide, Henry, from the African Walking Company was fantastic. Without his support and encouragement I would have struggled to make the summit as my asthma was very bad and I also developed a very bad cold. Henry and his team made everything run smoothly, nothing was too much trouble and the assistant guides walked with me to ensure that I kept up with the rest of the group. Their calm and efficient organisation made the trip so enjoyable.Without the support of Henry and his team I would have struggled to make the summit and I thank them all for helping me achieve my goal of climbing Kilimanjaro.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Order a sleeping mat - the ground is uneven and stony and it also helps with the cold at night.Take some shoes to wear in the evening, that are easy to put on at night when you need to do a night time loo runTake a Camelbak/Bladder - you need to drink lots and regularly and if you use poles then it is much easier to use the bladder rather than bottles. I used the bottles to fill up the bladder as required.Take the best sleeping bag you can afford. It is very important that you are warm and hence sleep at night as you need all your strength for the walking.

CLASSIC DOLOMITES

Great friendly hotel, super but not too demanding walks in great mountain country led by a knowledable and competant guide with a sense of humour.  Pity it only lasted a week!

Most Inspirational Moment

Tre Cime & Monte Piano walks.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Karl was more like another group member, only one who knew the way!  Kept the group entertained with fact and fiction.  The skill was to distinguish between the two!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Poles & stout boots are very useful.

WALKING ON THE GREEK ISLANDS

Really enjoyed this trip, a nice mix of walking (not too tough), sight-seeing, and relaxing. A good balance of group time and time to yourself. The group I was with were all very friendly and welcoming, and we have good fun over meals (….we done quite a bit of eating 😉 )

Most Inspirational Moment

Really enjoyed all three island - Naxos, Santorini and Paros. Each one has something different to offer, and the great thing about this trip is that you get out into the countryside to pass through villages you might not otherwise see. The coast walk in Santorini is fabulous - it is the most tourtisty of the islands, but the views will make you forgive this. Explore the little streets of the main town of Paros at night, a few of us done this together and it was just lovely.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Cecile was great, very friendly, helpful and a good laugh.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I scheduled in a few extra days in Athens, I would recommend this as you otherwise won't really get to see Athens. The hotel linked with this exodus trip (The Jason Inn), is in a great location for exploring the city.Go to the sunset in Oia when in Santorini. Don't let the throngs of other tourists going put you off. We found a lovely (if a bit expensive) bar to have a glass of wine and watch the sunset from. One of my favourite moments of the trip.Be prepared for a quick turn-around between some activities (i.e. arriving and hotel and departing for dinner, etc.) and quite a bit of ferry time. But neither of the above seemed an issue for anyone in the group.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A very varied trip, history, a bit of walking, culture, desert, snorkelling, pilgrimage, plenty of sun. Jordan has it all…

Most Inspirational Moment

Lots of inspirational moments, but the walk through the canyon (Siq) and seeing the Treasury at Petra gradually coming into sight has to be the moment, especially with the full mid-morning sun making it rosy. It is better than can be imagined.Caking ourselves in mud from the Dead Sea and floating in it was amazing--your skin feels 20 years younger.Seeing the majesty of the desert at sunset and sleeping in a camp bathed in moonlight, then starlight, watching the shooting stars and gradually the sunrise.Snorkelling in the Red Sea and seeing the beautiful coral reefs, floating amongst shoals of colourful fishVisiting biblical sites, and seeing the promised land as Moses did!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very personable, full of historical knowledge and worked very hard to please a large (20 people) group. Age range in our group was mid-twenties to mid seventies, so everyone needed something different and Danny coped extremely well. Jordan is a Muslim country and alcohol availability is sparse, but he made an effort to get us to available off-license as appropriate and recommended restaurants where wine was available. Did a lot of phoning around to make arrangements for individuals. Great guy!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare to be amazed at what Jordan has to offer. It has a wealth of history as well as beautiful landscapes and really friendly people. With only a 2hr time difference, a wonderful week in a very different environment without coping with jet lag on return is a definite bonus. It is worth doing some reading on some of the historical stuff before you go. Also there is the opportunity to snorkel or dive one day, to ride a camel in the desert, to experience the spa effects of the Dead Sea and come back laden with Dead Sea products.

MONT BLANC HOTEL TREK

This was truly the experience of a life time. To be able to hike through breath taking scenery all day and then to be able to enjoy all the comforts of a fully supported tour in the evening was really exhilarating. I really enjoyed the varietyof accomodations, particularly the family run hotels, each of which had their own flavour. The local cuisine was to be savoured especially the  hearty soups in the evenings and the berry pies at the refuges. All of the arrangements went without a hitch. Not having to worry about logistics such as accomodations and bag transfers meant that I could focus totally on enjoying the hiking experience.  At the end of the tour I really wanted to do it again…well done Exodus!

Most Inspirational Moment

On the first day as we were hiking above Chamonix  the upper part of Mount Blanc was hidden in the clouds, teasing us with glimpses. Gradually over an hour or so the clouds cleared so that by the time we stopped at the Refuge de la Flegere for hot chocolat we had a magnificent view of the snow covered and glaciated mountain top. Days later, we were hiking through mixed rain and snow showers  towards the Refuggio Bonatti (and more  hot chocolat), when suddenly the clouds lifted to give us views of the fresh snow covered face of the Grand Jorasses. This was a truly unforgettable moment that demanded that we stop for pictures. We were blessed with a wonderful group of people to hike with. Although we  varied greatly in country of origin, age, experience and stamina, we soon formed a caring bond between us.  At a number of places we encountered long  climbs or challenges that pushed some beyond their comfort level. We and our leader encouraged each other so that everyone got through the tougher sections and were then able to bask in a sense of accomplishment afterwards.

Thoughts on Group Leader

This was my first guided tour and I must say thatFrank met or exceeded my every expectation for a guide. He obviously loved being a guide on the Mount Blanc route and it showed. Each evening we were given a preview of the next  day’s  terrain, distance and weather expectations, making each new day an adventure to be anticipated. On the trail he was very safety conscious and skilled at anticipating when he should assist or coach less experienced hikers. He rotated   between the front, middle or back of the group as conditions dictated  Consequently, we successfully trekked through everything a late season Mount Blanc threw at us(sunshine , rain, wind and even fresh falling snow) without incident.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There are many long ascents and descents to content with. The better shape you are in the more you will enjoy it. For those travelling from the west coast of North America, I recommend that you come a few days ahead of time so that your body clock can be adjusted before you start hiking.  Likewise, if you normally live close to sea level, spending a few days in the Chamonix area in advance will help you get acclimatized and used to exerting yourself at higher elevations as well.

THE TROPICAL SOUTH

I thought this trip was fantastic. I fell in love with South India. When I sleep at night I’m still dreaming about the trip – it was that good. I want to go back!  My personal highlight was the trip to Munnar, the mountainous areas are just breathtakingly beautiful and green. The people in Munnar are incredibly friendly, its well worth taking a walk around the town when you have some down time.  In fact – everywhere we went the people were very friendly. Periyar is also very beautiful and the town is interesting. What am I talking about? Everything and everywhere was interesting.

Most Inspirational Moment

For me - pretty much everything!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh was very kind, patient, knowledgable, funny and very pleasant to talk to. He was an extremely good tour guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Embrace everything! Indian people have a very good sense of humour and love to engage in a conversation with foreigners, so make an effort! :) I went a bit mental, I can't sit still for 5 seconds, so I was getting up earlier than I needed to every morning to go into each the towns we stayed at just to experience more and more!!

MADAGASCAN DISCOVERER

What a wonderfully all encompassing tour of Madagascar taking in a great selection of the fantastic countryside including lovely beaches on the shores of the Indian ocean, the all important lemurs and other fauna and flora, the people and the culture that makes Madagascar such a diverse interesting place to visit.

Most Inspirational Moment

Being able to see the lemurs in their natural habitat and close up and personal at a private reserve at vakona lodge and in lemur park in tana was wonderful. The chameleons are amazing. Climbing in Tsingy limestone forest is well worth the effort. The friendly Malagasy people will leave a lasting impression.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The tour leader was excellent. He was friendly and spproachable and took account of everyone's needs. He was very helpful when anyone felt unwell or when anyone found the going a little tough in the heat. His commentaries were very informative and it was no trouble if anyone wanted information on any aspect of the trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for an intense programme with some very long drives on some poor roads or dirt tracks but take a good camera because there is so much to captivate and interest you.
