January 2024 - Excellent Trip

A great variation from north to south Vietnam, but well worth all the travelling, as without it you wouldn’t get a feel for what Vietnam has gone through and what it has to offer.

Most Inspirational Moment

All of it, as it was so varied, including the food.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Quang was excellent and obviously devoted to his country and his family. He went the extra mile to ensure we experienced a value for money holiday.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Enjoy the experience. The bunks on the train are uncomfortable, but it was warm enough with just a sleeping bag liner, the toilet was kept clean throughout the night and you do get to sleep.

Suggestions

Enjoy the food, the coffee (especially the egg and salty coffee), the sights and sounds. Be prepared for the noise of motorbikes and beeps and don't forget to cross the roads with confidence, holding your hand up to stop the traffic.

Great road trip in Mexico !

Was a wonderful trip from Mexico City to Cancun ..we covered lots of ground and experienced happy Mexican hospitality, food, weddings, demonstrations and lots of pyramids and tricky mathematical equations

Most Inspirational Moment

Oaxaca was fantastic - fun weddings with the full band experience at high volume and intensity and the 'carnival' plus a few demonstrations with lots of interesting swirling props and craziness ( i would be on one everyday if I lived in Oaxaca ) - great restaurants . Puebla was lovely . Cookery class was fun . I enjoyed all the historical sites and the nuances of the different phases of history ( even liked climbing them, in the heat) . Also, enjoyed tostados in the market near Frida's house

Thoughts on Group Leader

Adriana was a great group leader. She was very passionate about her homeland and was keen to share this with all of us. She had a wonderful personality and nothing was too much trouble for her to make our trip as interesting and comfortable as possible . Pillows for the back seats, the offer of getting tea bags from Walmart, fresh fish and sea side trip , lots and lots of restaurant and bar recommendations/ shopping . Also, asked us for toons for the mini bus and downloaded these for us to sing along to - some Spice Girl moments slipped in to the playlist ! We also 'taught' Adriana some more obscure English words !!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Quite a few long days travelling . Make sure you have a decent water bottle and day pack and also closed in shoes for the walking at the main archaeological sites . Check Frida Kahlo trip and tickets are confirmed before you arrive . Mini bus had four seats at back which were uncomfortable , limited view and it was hotter at the back ( although good speakers in the back ) - pillows helped with this and the rotation of the 14 in the group

Suggestions

Mexico is a wonderful country . I was pleasantly surprised that its got everything ! plus very good cocktails , colour and exuberance ...I will be back , that's for sure - it was great fun

Trip of a lifetime!

I took part in the Exodus Everest Base Camp trip in March and had an incredible time!

Everything was so well organised. The guides were so professional and great at their jobs. My group and I were in very safe and capable hands.

The itinerary was fantastic. It was so beautiful hiking to Everest Base Camp. Every day was an adventure and there were fun things for us to do and see on a daily basis. I appreciated the inclusion of visiting schools, monasteries, museums etc. on the trip – it added a nice extra dimension to the hiking.

We had a group of 6 travellers which was a nice number and it was nice being part of a team. We all made it to Base Camp which was fantastic news.

This was my first trip with Exodus however after this I will definitely be going on more trips with them!

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching Base Camp!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack playing cards - my group and I played Uno every night and it was a nice way to bond and chill out at the end of a hard day's walking!

Two Halves

The first half of the week in Bolovento was brilliant. I loved my massive room. Four beds and two balconies. I liked the hotel policy of serving one meal in the restaurant in the evening. If you didn’t like it you could order something from the ‘B’ menu, the morning before. It meant the food was a high standard. I liked the staff, who were very friendly. The hotel gardens were beautiful. The jacuzzi was an unexpected bonus and great for relaxing after the walking.
When we moved to Santa Cruz, things went badly. On arrival at our hotel there was one poor girl trying to book in sixteen guests and cover the shop next door. Sixteen passports to be photocopied. Next, most of us discovered that we were staying in the annex. No hotel ever has an annex for the benefit of the guests. They are simply a business opportunity to add more rooms with just one reception desk. The annex was up some steps in an alley, across (and uphill) a public square and around the next street. All on tiny cobbles that did their best to rip the wheels off everyone’s suitcase.
The second night all the air conditioning went off for the entire night.
At the farewell meal the restaurant (despite having our order three days ago) had made no provision for serving sixteen people. Half of us had our food served reasonably quicky and had to eat it whilst feeling uncomfortable and sympathetic for those who had not. Then, when the first half had finished their plates, the food arrived for the second half. Atrocious organisation, considering the notice they had.
I think you really need to reconsider the hotel and the restaurant.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking around the bottom of the caldera.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very pleasant.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Exodus do offer much better holidays than this one.

Suggestions

Mainland Spain is a closer flight to home and still has big mountains, even if they aren't active volcanoes.

The Garden Route to Cape Town

This was a particularly enjoyable holiday where everything came together to create a fantastic experience. Good weather, a friendly group, an excellent tour leader and a well-constructed itinerary that took us to some wonderful places. The accommodation was of a good standard throughout. The “oceanettes” at Storms River Mouth with their incredible views were outstanding (a pleasant surprise having seen previous travellers’ comments on the wooden cabins there). We very much enjoyed staying in House Martin Guest Lodge too.
–South Africa was thought-provoking and very different to our expectations in so many ways. Like Jill Chaloner (previous review), we found it hard to get a Black perspective on the country, and mention of apartheid was largely restricted to our visit to Robben Island, which was a sobering reminder of South Africa’s recent past.

Most Inspirational Moment

It’s hard to choose one moment as there were so many highlights – Schotia Game Reserve, Chapman’s Peak Drive and the Cape of Good Hope, Table Mountain and Robben Island, all were great. However, just spending a sunny hour watching the Indian Ocean breaking on the rocks at Storms River is one of our most memorable moments.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We were lucky to have Marco who was everything a Tour Leader should be: he gave us the right information clearly and at the right time. He was friendly, had excellent local knowledge of birds and wildlife, and was a safe driver. He put a lot of effort in behind the scenes to make everything run smoothly and we particularly appreciated the lifts to the restaurant at Storms River Mouth as it was quite a walk from the accommodation. There were a couple of birthdays and a marriage proposal on our trip, and Marco made these occasions special for all concerned!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack for cool and wet as well as hot and dry. The Little Karoo is hot, semi-desert, but most of the trip is near the coast with a maritime climate (changeable!). –Do the optional Schotia game reserve trip (it really should be included, not an extra). Bring enough cash to pay for it, it’s cheaper than using a credit card. Take a warm layer on the Schotia visit, it was chilly later in the day (our driver handed out blankets). –The food in SA is plentiful and cheap, as is the wine! There were also options for the vegetarians in the group. –We agree with a previous comment about buying tea, coffee and milk before arriving at Storms River Mouth (for milk, ask nicely at the restaurant). –The visit to the wine estate didn’t amount to much, and beware: their cheese board option for lunch is ridiculously generous. –Our e-tickets stated there was no food on the flight from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth, but in fact a light meal was provided, and the flight attendant was surprised we had been told otherwise.

Suggestions

We found South Africa to be a safe and friendly country to visit.

Great holiday full of activity

Vietnam is a beautiful country with the loveliest people. This is a busy trip with early mornings and jam-packed itinerary but I wouldn’t have liked to miss any of it. We were a nice, international group led by Lam, the best Exodus leader I’ve had so far!

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling in 36 degree heat on a manual bike. Never thought I could finish it but I did!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent, very enthusiastic and obviously passionate about his country. Also very experienced and always ready with anything (tips, suggestions, delicious fruits, insect repellent, alcohol gel) to make our experience even better. The support team were also great - we couldn't have done it without them.

Advice for Potential Travellers

E-bikes might be worth the upgrade Don't overpack, cheap laundry can be organised

Good Mexico trip covering lots of distance

Covered a large amount of Mexico , lots of historical sites of varying sizes and complexity. Mini bus rear seats unusable ( thats 4 seats ) until some pillows were purchased to assist in sitting upright, visibility from the rear seats was severely restricted. We operated a voluntary rota system which most people complied with. Differences between various cities afforded multiple perspectives of passage through time of various civilisations.

Most Inspirational Moment

Enjoyed impromptu wedding processions in Oaxaca, along with some protests ( which were loud, noisy musical affairs accompanied by huge wooden framed figures carried on shoulders of dancing men) . The cooking lesson in Oaxaca was very good .

Thoughts on Group Leader

Adriana was an excellent guide/tour leader . She provided lots of information and suggestions for eating establishments ( for all budgets) . Even downloaded a ton of music ( nominated by us travellers) to her phone so it could be played on minibus stereo system .

Advice for Potential Travellers

Learn a few words of spanish, such as please, thank you and I am sorry. Dont leave your manners at home ! Carry a reusable/refillable water bottle as temperatures can get very high and you drink more ( water available on mini bus) , especially when wandering around sites of historical interest . Have some closed toe shoes/sandals as the steps up Mayan pyramids can be uneven / rocky / jagged.

Suggestions

Trip notes mention tipping kitty but this no longer happens. So travellers either have to tip local guides (without knowing correct amounts or notes) or hope to persuade trip guide to operate a kitty . Frida Kahlo musuem tickets are nowhere near guaranteed despite prominent mention in online trip notes , so if thats important to you check availability yourself and query if resellers available . Request this info from Exodus just prior to departure . Quintana roo deprture tax can be purchased via web site prior UK departure online, however also at Cancun airport. However , tax desk was "closed " when we went through and no one checked /interested so it really depends on your view of risk !

Fab trip

Fantastic trip, enjoyed every second.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Shibu was fantastic as were all of the team.

Mexico Tour

We saw many inspiring ruins from several cultures, tried delicious Mexican dishes, and visited many interesting cities.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Teotihuacan ruins near Mexico City, Palenque, and Chichen Itza were all different, yet amazing.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our tour leader, Adriana, is absolutely excellent. She was very organized, informative, and helpful. She made our trip fun in many ways like making playlists of our requested music to pass the long road trips. This also inspired positive group dynamics.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for some long days of travel. The temperatures in March are very hot (mid-30s celsius).

Suggestions

The transportation in the minibus was uncomfortable for the long trips.

Never a dull moment!

While I anticipated a week of trail hikes, our guide added several events to make the week a cultural event as well. To begin, the scenery is spectacular. Added to that, our guide Veriano shared his deep passion for the area and its culture. We enjoyed the morning challenges of the trails, then shared in the preparation and/or consumption of those gourmet products in the afternoon. It was the best of both worlds. Our guide was extremely knowledgable about the history and vegetation of the area, having been born and raised there. In addition there were opportunities to appreciate the history first hand by climbing Mt Vesuvius and visiting Pompei. The experience left me with a great appreciation for the area and left me with a lifetime of memories.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the remaining caldera of Mt Vesuvius was indeed impressive and then walking on the pumice still adorning the Amalfi coast, many miles distant provided a new impression of the catastrophe that occurred in 79 AD. Also, I was struck by the presence of herbs growing wild all over the region in the hills.

Thoughts on Group Leader

As I stated above, our group leader was fantastic. He was clearly passionate about his roots there, which was infectious for all of us. His knowledge of everything local was unsurpassed. He kept our days light hearted and ensured the safety of all. He has a great sense of humor, yet maintained order in the group with excellent leadership skill. This is my second trip with Exodus, and thus far, I have experienced two phenomenal group leaders.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Although this trip was designated moderate in difficulty, it is far less challenging than the hiking around Mont Blanc in France. Still, I would recommend that participants spend time walking and hiking on a regular basis prior to the trip. There are some rather challenging inclines.
