Cycle Romania

Stunning scenery with the historical backdrop of political upheavals and resilient people made a fascinating cocktail

Most Inspirational Moment

The man who sews the waistcoats and is a human world heritage site was a first - but he can't get a word in edgewise with his wife in full flow! Staying in guesthouses in small villages was lovely and took me out of the normal comfort zone of a standard hotel. I wouldn't have wanted to sleep with my in- laws in a drawer under me though! The Saxon churches in Transylvania being still lovingly cared for even though no Saxons remain in the community

Raluka was superb throughout. Fun, enthusiastic, efficient and picked up our group humour so quickly she held her own. Her passion, pride and hope for her country was inspirational for us jaded types. She was ably assisted by Livio who provided additional insights

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just enjoy every minute like I did

Walking in Sierra Nevada and Granada

An unspoilt area of Spain with interesting walks and scenery. It was good to have walks starting from the hotel and / or a short transfer to a local village. At the end of the week to have a day and overnight stay in Granada worked well especially as the hotel was very central to the old part of the city.
The hotel in Berchules was lovely. The staff very welcoming and accommodating. The food was excellent as was the service.

Most Inspirational Moment

We went in May so the mountain sides were covered in spring flowers including many orchids. We also saw eagles, golden orioles and hoopoes. I found the geology of the area very interesting as there were some incredible rock formations and folding.

Thoughts on Group Leader

George was an excellent leader with a detailed knowledge of the history and culture of the area. The walks were well paced with opportunities to stop to take photographs and look at the spectacular views.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Although most days there were opportunities to replenish water bottles at local fountains, do take 2 x 1 litre water bottles as the temperature can rise quickly.

Petra & Wadi Rum by bike

A fast paced trip but combining the cycling with sightseeing was fantastic.

Most Inspirational Moment

Of course Petra, but I have to say that I was surprised with how much I loved the Dead Sea. Having two full days in Petra and Little Petra was perfect. They were long days of walking in the hot sun so expect to walk around 20k but it is so worth it. I couldn't imagine only seeing Petra in 1 day, that's not enough time for such a spectacular place.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Issa was amazing. He made me wish that I had taken some history courses prior to the trip as his knowledge is so immense and he made every stop so interesting. He is an archeologist, but also somewhat of a historian, so of course the two go hand in hand. He was very concerned for our safety on the bikes and made us all feel very well taken care of.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definitely take water shoes for the Dead Sea, the sand is quite hot. Expect to use more money than the trip notes mention as the prices are higher there than the trip notes indicate. It is very hilly for cycling so make sure you have some fitness going into this trip to make it more enjoyable for yourself.

Croatia and the Dalmatian Coast

Wonderful country that should be on everybody’s list.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sasha was what a tour leader should be, proud of her country and wanting to share it with the group. One couldn't ask for better.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip was listed as leisurely but I feel it was a moderate especially for a couch potato.

Highlights of the Amalfi Coast

This was an excellent trip in a very beautiful part of Italy. We visited many fascinating places and stayed in a lovely hotel with friendly staff and great food.

Most Inspirational Moment

Completing the Walk of the Gods which was challenging but worth it for the amazing views, the wonderful lunch half-way through and the sense of satisfaction at having made it to the end. Herculaneum was also fascinating to visit.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eduardo was a wonderful guide. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him and he made sure that everyone was happy and all their needs met. He had a great knowledge of the local area and imparted it with humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Eating out is quite expensive in Italy.

Chianti walking and wine

Another excellent Exodus trip. Some good walking through Tuscany combined with other activities such as a guided tour of Siena, visit to Florence, visited to wineries and much more. Accommodation in Villa Casalta was good on the above scale.

Difficult to pick out one, but probably the excellent locally guided visit to Siena.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Liz was everything one might wish from a really good group leader: friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. She was also an excellent driver of our Exodus minibus; felt much safer that on some previous trips with Italian drivers.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Try to avoid flying with British Airways; we only narrowly escaped the 27th May IT debacle and were grateful to return the Gatwick only 4 hours late. BA short-haul is just another budget airline and not a particularly good one at that.

A truly amazing experience

A fabulous trip in lovely countryside with friendly people and sights and sounds of a bygone age. The cycling was
always interesting with lots to see along the route. The culture and history of the country was explained to us on route enhancing the enjoyment of what we were experiencing.

Most Inspirational Moment

The warmness and friendliness in which we were greeted in people's homes. Our hosts could not do enough to help us, it was lovely to experience and feel the welcome of the local people. We often sat out after arriving from a days cycling with cakes and drinks whilst chatting to the hosts in a lovely relaxed environment. Life in the villages was hard but the children always waved and looked happy as we passed through.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Raluca and Liveu worked together superbly to give us a faultless, interesting holiday constantly surprising us with visits along the way. Any problems were dealt with efficiently and promptly. Raluca had a vast knowledge of her country and she passed that on to us during the week with a history lesson most evenings before we had our meal. She was passionate about her country and her enthusiasm was infectious.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you have enough local currency to last the first few days as apart from the airport there is no where to exchange money in the villages . It was day 5 before we entered a large town with exchange facilities. Beware the roads generally are in poor condition so you have to keep an eye out for the numerous potholes, some of which are quite a size and depth.

A HIDDEN GEM?

This tour is more of a mini adventure or experience than a holiday and incorporates the correct balance of moderate cycling, history and culture.

Cycling into the UNESCO sites of Sighisoara and Viscri and learning/understanding the history of the region.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Raluca is energetic, organised, knowledgeable and above all very passionate about her country. It is no surprise she has taken up some form of 'councillor role' in Bucharest. As well as a superb Leader Raluca would make a good history teacher as she was able to retain my interest which can sometimes be limited.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This category has used the correct terminology 'potential travellers' - It is for travellers not tourists because there is a need to be flexible to and appreciate some of the accommodation used and amenities available. Go now because whilst some of the villages/towns are protected it will change as more people find this 'hidden gem' of an area.

the delights of uzbekistan

The people of uzbekistan are so open and friendly. The cities and the monuments within them live up to all expectations and there is so much to see. The Yurts are comfortable and spacious, toilet facilities at the camp are good, much better than expected. Camel ride and walk through the desert was a great experience and finishing up with a swim and a picnic beside the lake was a great rounding off of the camp experience.
There are long bus journeys on this trip between the towns and some of the roads are quite rough but we felt safe in the hands of our driver.
Food is much better than expected and there is more variety than the trip notes seem to indicate. Nobody appeared to get any serious stomach bugs on the trip which is unusual when the weather was so hot. I think this was because our guide advised on good eating places and kept us right.
The currency issues are not as difficult as hinted at and are easily managed. Security, including arrival and departure at the airport was robust but not a problem

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to say as there were many. For me the Registan and other monuments in Samarkand were probably the most inspirational thing but the night in a yurt camp with camel ride was amazing as were the desert forts. Or maybe the most inspirational thing was the openess and friendliness of the uzbek people. A trip of many highlights

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dilshod was patient, understanding, organised and extremely knowledgable on history and local customs. He had a good sense of humour, gelled well with the group and shared many personal experiences of his life in uzbekistan. He made the trip easier for us all and kept us going when the heat of the day made us wilt. I think his guidence and attention in terms of directing us to eating places also helped to keep us healthy

Advice for Potential Travellers

Travel as light as possible, have a torch for the Yurt camp and make sure you drink lots and lots of water. Take money in US dollars and slap on the sun cream before you go out.

Back to back holidays

I wanted to do two holidays back to back, one in Bulgaria spending an extra day in Sofia and then go on to Greece for my second week. I was concerned about the transfers/ pickups etc. However all turned out very well, using the metro in both countries was very easy, with the hotels provided very convenient to the stations and main attractions.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to walk in the countryside of both countries plus being able to see the sites of both capitols. I would suggest that Exodus do this holiday as a standard trip. It makes for a good combination for a two week break.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both the leaders I had were very good. As I have now done 13 trips with Exodus and 12 with another company who's name begins Ex, I can tell you this is not always the case!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do it !! As I always say travel has made me poorer in the pocket but richer in the mind. I feel privileged to have been to so many places [all be it I worked hard to get the money to enable me to do so] My outlook on life and my opinions on things has been enhanced by my travels. As a person from a humble background, I would not have dreamed as a boy/young man that I would get to go to the places I have been to in my life time. Every trip is a bonus !
