GORILLAS & MASAI MARA

The reverse route for the AYU trip was majestic. We did the reverse because we wanted to make sure we were able to see the gorillas at our best (not tired or potentially sick by the end of the trip). This proved to be a GREAT decision. Although I was not tired or sick by the end, I felt that seeing the gorillas first and then the small scale safaris was a great preview to the epic Masai Mara!

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many inspirational moments on this trip. The lion cubs snuggling with their mama and the stalking and almost kill were amazing. Being out in the wilderness, in the fresh air, with nothing to worry about other than what was going to amaze me next was relaxing and exhilarating at the same time. Visiting with the children at the school/orphanage was excellent. The beautiful walk up the scenic Uganda mountains and meeting Theresa, the 70 year old woman working the potato fields, while chatting away with our guides was a good way to enjoy the morning. Visiting with the children was inspiring. As a teacher in America, I often take the materials I have for granted. Seeing what these teachers have done for these students puts things in a very different light. I can't wait to bring back their stories to my students. We've set up pen pals!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Chris....what can I say. Professional, organized, knowledgable, hard working, and funny! My favorite part of the day was always Chris's "talk" at dinner...."Right, so here's the plan for tomorrow". Something very special about Chris was his clear respect for his co-workers. He constantly gave props to our driver Francis and our chef Jonas. He is humble. Francis....you can always expect a smile out of Francis. He is a great pool player! Francis is a good driver and always knew exactly where he was going. We were never lost and got everywhere on time! It took him a few days to warm up and chat with the group, but he always had some fun things to say! Also very knowledgable about his home country of Kenya! Jonas....one of the most caring and respectful people. There were a few food allergies or dietary needs on our trip. Jonas never made anyone go hungry! He was well aware of all of people's needs on the trip. When he noticed I was eating less of the meat (even though I am not a vegetarian), he let me know he made extra vegetarian food that night so I could have some.

Advice for Potential Travellers

1. Gorilla Trek: Long pants is a must, BUT long pants with something over them or some extra protection is better. There are prickly plants that had my legs stinging for the rest of the day! There are also these EVIL ants that crawl up your pant legs and bit any skin they find! Tucking your pants in or wearing leggings under your pants would help! 2. It gets VERY cold in the morning and at night...bring something warm. 3. Bring an extra battery or two for your cameras. Although there are places to charge, we had a few people who got stuck with out a battery through out the trip. 4. Head torch is a must. There are many nights where you will need it to fend off wild animals on your way to the bathroom :).

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

The trip was extremely well organised and the AWC guides and porters were fabuolous – I was well fed and well looked after in all apsects of the trip.  I thoroughly enjoyed the route which was challenging at times, beautiful and took in a wide variety of landscapes and wildlife – colobus monkeys, buffalo, blue monkeys, various insects all amazing.  The only downside was the rep on our return to the hotel, we were left to give out the certificates within the group and the presentation cermemnoy and celebratory beers we were promised didn’t happen.  There were a few people in our group who struggled to get some informaiton they needed insurance wise due to lost kit as a result of his unavailability which was a shame after a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable week.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking above the clouds - was truly bizarre, beautiful and amazing.   Also realising how far we had climbed when we reacked Gilmans point and the sun was up - just amazed that I actually did it!  The ice fields are like nothing I have ever seen before, they are beautiful.  I think the biggest thing was the sense of achievement - realising just what you can be capable of if you put your mind to something, anything is possible.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Meke was absolutely fantastic, he was upbeat, freiendly and informative.  We felt cared for and well informed about each aspect the the trip and his assistant guides were also wonderful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Train, train, train!  It isn't massisvely difficult but being fit can't hurt when the altitude makes everything more difficult anyway.  I found that training whilst carrying my daysack stood me in good stead.   Take lots of pics at the top - i doubt you'll be going back and as much as you are exhausted, son't regret not getting the shots - you don't get that much time once you get there.Take carb gels and rehydrate powders for your water - and drink far more than you think you need to.

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

This was my first group trip and I wasn’t sure what to expect.  It was my first walking holiday and I wasn’t sure what to expect.  It was my first holiday without my husband or a friend and I wasn’t sure what to expect.  And it was great in every way.

Most Inspirational Moment

Every time we reached a new high point and stopped to take in the view and the cable car trip up L'Aiguille Du Midi when the clouds cleared for a view of the Chamonix valley

Thoughts on Group Leader

Oliver was very knowledgeable about the whole area and added a lot to the walks with his snippets of local history, wildflowers and animals and his truly dreadful jokes, the sort you want to groan at but find yourself laughing anyway

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you take a swimming costume - the hot tub in the garden with the view of the mountains at sunset should not be missed

RODOPI MOUNTAINS

Good walking but not too strenuous, interesting scenery and sightseeing .

Most Inspirational Moment

The devil’s throat Caves with stalactites and stalagmites.

Thoughts on Group Leader

very attractive GirlGood company & pleasant to talk to.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take travel kettle/breakfast tea bags /coffee/dried milk

CLASSIC DOLOMITES

The hotel situation meant that this was not a holiday for anyone who values sleep. On a square with a nearby church the bells of which sounded evey quarter hour night and day, I was desperate for a decent night sleep by the time I arrived home.  Food well over rated. Also the Wellness centre – a major attraction for me was not in fact available when we were there.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting home to my own bed! generally the whole trip felt a bit tame but I was exhausted through lack of sleep..

Thoughts on Group Leader

OK seemed to know the local area well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do not go to this hotel/ pack ear plugs

Reply from Exodus

We are very sorry that this reviewer did not enjoy their stay at the Hotel Adler and that the Wellness Centre was not available during their stay. We have been working with the Adler for over 10 years and we get lots of great feedback about the hotel itself and in particular the food. Our Dolomites programme manager has stayed at the hotel and although she appreciates that church bells can be heard from the front of the hotel, it is very rare that our clients don’t enjoy their stay.

CLASSIC DOLOMITES

Excellent range of walks in a short period of time gives a taster for more and we are likely to return to the Dolomites. Good hotel accommodation with excellent variety of food and facilities.

Most Inspirational Moment

Monte Piano and Tre Cime, good walking with spectacular views.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Karl was friendly and knowledgeable of the area. He kept the group well informed and was flexible with the itinerary following the flight delay which resulted in a enjoyable first day.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take your walking polls and don’t forget your bathing costume for the hotel swimming pool, Jacuzzi etc.

CORSICAN MOUNTAINS & VILLAGES

A friendly small hotel in a pictureque village, laid back walking through unspoilt forests, wildflowers and clean air.

Most Inspirational Moment

Swimming in pristine mountain pools. Sipping beers cooled in mountain streams.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rudy was very thoughtful and looked after all the guests very well. Walks were well planned to suit all guests and to see as much of the area as possible, An excellent leader.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

Cycling the Damation Coast is up there with my favourite holidays! A great was to see Croatia, visitng some of the Islands and taking in the spectacular views. I was lucky to be with some great people so we had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs.More challenging than I was expecting, but for me that just made the experience better! The hotels weren’t up to much at all, so a good job we didn’t spend much time in them.  The first hotel had so many steps and no one to help with the cases.  A bit disappointing considering the cost of the holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

The trip to Mljet.  A very pretty place so take advantage of this day trip - not to be missed.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ana was a great tour leader.  Very knowledgeable and professional.  She was supportive of all reglardless of their fitness level and those with quirky fears (I am a complete scardey cat when it comes to cycling down very steep hills).

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get some cycling training in as it's tougher than it's advertised as being.  Perhaps attend some spinning classes.  I really enjoyed it but others struggled. Also the beaches are mostly pebbles and stones, so bring appropriate footwear for walking into the water.

GORILLAS & MASAI MARA - Best two weeks imaginable!

An absolutely amazing two weeks, three countries with seventeen other people. I've come away with a ton of memories, and many many new friends.

Most Inspirational Moment

Sitting perhaps 6ft from the silverback from the Amahoro group, watching him sleepily eat bamboo completly unfazed by a group of muzungu's clicking away. Going to the orphanage at Lake Bunyoni, and playing with all the kids. Well worth going for.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Chris was a LEGEND! A great mix of stories, experience and ability to know when to be hands on, and hands off. He's a true credit to Exodus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do the reverse route. It builds up perfectly to the Masai Mara at the end we thought!Orphanage, hot air balloon.. Do the lot. It adds up to an amazing holiday. The fleece for the truck is spot on, and bring (an English) sense of humour, good books or card games.

DUBROVNIK & THE DALMATIAN COAST

Great combination of history, culture and terrific landscape

Most Inspirational Moment

The magical island or Korcula. I was expecting Dubrovnik to be the star of the show and that was great but Korcula is magnificent. The view down on the old town on its peninsular jutting into the sea is unforgettable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The leader can make or break a trip and Edo, our group leader, was fantastic. At first sight he's a huge bear of a guy but very friendly, totally reliable and unstingly helpful. He ran himself ragged to make the trip run smoothly. I can't praise him highly enough.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If travelling in the summer be prepared for the heat - we had 32c-37c - and no air-con in the hotel in Korcula!
