Bosnia & Herzegovina boasts vast swathes of wild and rugged landscape that rival anything in Western Europe, with the towering Dinaric Alps at its heart. Indeed, much of the country is mountainous and was, for centuries, inhabited only by shepherds. Larger settlements, such as Sarajevo, were concentrated on lower grounds, and their skylines dominated by tree-lined hills and jagged peaks.
Not surprisingly this offers a massive choice when it comes to walking trails, from steeper ascents or rolling hills to following bubbling mountain brooks through primeval forests. Visitors to Bosnia are mersmerised by the country’s pristine wilderness, and fascinated by its cultural divergence.
