Walking Devon’s Coastal Highlights

With hundreds of miles of coastal paths and ancient tracks, South Devon is home to some of the finest walks in Britain. Breath-taking seascapes and peaceful country lanes invite you in at every turn as you discover this recognised Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. South Devon was designated as such for its wild and rugged coastline, network of rivers and estuaries, rolling farmland, rich wildlife, natural tranquillity, unspoilt views, and its ancient network of pathways – perfect for a walking holiday!

This trip gives you the opportunity to enjoy the highlights of coastal Devon at your own pace. Beginning in the port city of Plymouth, you’ll walk to the tiny village of Noss Mayo, hidden away on the Southern Bank of the Yealm estuary. Your journey continues on the ferry as you cross the Avon estuary over to Bantham before ending your trip in Salcombe, a popular resort town known for its outstanding coastal views and rolling countryside.

You'll stay in hand-picked guesthouses, pubs with rooms or small hotels. They are well suited to walkers, located close to the trail and offer comfortable accommodation with a good breakfast to start your day.

Itinerary

Arrive at your hotel in Plymouth, set in a lovely waterfront location. Take some time to visit the local sights including the Royal William Yard, Elizabethan House, and the National Marine Aquarium.

Overnight Imperial Hotel 4*, Plymouth.

Take the ferry from The Barbican Quay across the River Plym (paid locally – approx. £2pp). On arrival at Mount Batten, your path winds gently uphill, hugging the coastline with beautiful views. Continue through wooded cliff tops before reaching St. Werburgh’s Church at Wembury beach. Here you take the river ferry across Yealm Estuary to Wide Slip, just west of the village of Noss Mayo where you'll be transferred to Yealmpton.

Overnight Rose & Crown 3H, Yealmpton.

Meals Included: Breakfast

You'll be transferred to the start of todays walk. Follow the riverside path to Mouthstone Point with lovely views of Wembury Bay and Mewstone. Walk along cliff tops and past Stoke Beach before arriving at the remains of St Peter’s Church. To cross Erme Estuary, you can wade through the river 90 minutes either side of low tide, alternatively you can book a local taxi. Take the ferry from Cockleridge Ham to Bantham across Avon Estuary (paid locally – no reservation required); a short walk brings you to your accommodation for the night.

Please note: There is no ferry across Erme Estuary. You will need to wade across at or near low tide (90 minutes either side of low tide is recommended) or arrange a local taxi for approx. £35 one way. Transfers are included to/from the accommodation when staying in Modbury.

Overnight Sloop Inn 3H, Bantham or Exeter Inn 3H, Modbury.

Leaving Bantham, you can walk across the beach or take the path behind the dunes crossing the footbridge at South Milton Ley Nature Reserve. Your path hugs low cliffs as you descend into Hope Cove with stunning views of Bigbury Bay and Burgh Island. Enter woodland passing Overbeck’s Garden as you wind down to Salcombe’s South Sands beach.

Before leaving Salcombe, we’d recommend exploring this bustling town with beautiful estuary beaches where you can take a boat trip to South Sands or Kingsbridge.
