Dolomites – Winter & Hiking Holidays
Located in the northern part of Italy, the Dolomites are among the most striking mountain ranges in Europe. They are tinted in weathered shades of rose, yellow and grey, and rise up in steep spires and soaring pinnacles, once coral beds forced up from the sea floor over 60 million years ago.
Their towering walls have attracted rock climbers since the early 20th century and the awe-inspiring landscapes mean Dolomites trips are a dream for walkers, with numerous routes that explore the lower hills and valleys. This is an excellent location to see remarkable rock formations, verdant valleys, emerald-green lakes and glorious glaciers. At certain times of the year there are wild flowers in abundance, and the quaint villages and hamlets you come to along the way offer an insight into life in this mountainous region. In winter, the area is transformed with a blanket of crisp snow, perfect for exploring on snowshoes or by cross-country skiing. Our Cross-Country Skiing in Dobbiaco trip is great for beginners as well as advanced skiers with qualified instructors to support you through the pre-cut tracks, as we explore the wonderland of the Dolomites under snow.
During the First World War, the line between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces ran through the Dolomites and many high-level paths visited on our various walks show this fascinating history in all too real detail. On some Dolomites tours, we visit these open-air museums and marvel at their views of the peaks.

Lisa Wright Classic Dolomites – Premium AdventureWow what a fabulous holiday! Our guide Thomas was brilliant, so easy to get along with, just a really nice guy! The hotel Adler was also great, the rooms are small but have everything you need plus you never spend any time in them. The food is outstanding especially the evening meal where you have 4 courses! We were very well fed and the people who work there were lovely and couldn’t do enough for you! The pool area is also really nice and great after a long hike! Be prepared for naked people in the sauna though 🙂
On to the hiking! I was a bit worried if it would be too hard but it wasn’t (level 3) it was perfect! You do need a fairly good level of fitness to make it enjoyable though. The stair stepper in the gym helped a lot. Hiking poles were a knee saver so take them if you need them but you can also borrow them from the hotel.
The scenery was absolutely stunning, it almost doesn’t look real. It’s hard to pick which was my favourite walk as they all had different things to enjoy. I particularly enjoyed the plentiful mountain huts for coffee & strudel stops!
The pace was good, everyone kept together and we had a really lovely group! After the hikes we all enjoyed a much deserved drink sat outside the hotel which was so nice.
It was a fabulous trip, our 4th one with Exodus and I can’t recommend them enough!
Scott Sugarman Highlights of the DolomitesI offer the following comments
First, Jenny and Mark were extraordinary tour leaders. They were thoughtful, attentive and kind. and very knowledgeable
Second, the walks were great; the scenery delightful.
Third, while I am not a coffee drinker, I heard a number of our group wish the hotel’s dining room would offer coffee/tea before the 730 am start to breakfast. some of the group awoke early and would have dearly liked a good cup of coffee, and there was none to be had. please consider.
Fourth, we started each day with a bus ride. However, the local buses were often late or the lines of riders very very long, thus delaying the start to our hikes. Please consider having a bus available for the group to start the day.
