Often referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Dolomites’, Lago di Braies is an idyllic alpine lake that lies within Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park and is famous for its gin-clear, turquoise waters that reflect the imposing backdrop of the Croda del Becco mountain. During the summer months, the lake is a popular spot for Dolomites walking holidays, rowing and photography owing to its picture-perfect setting. A pretty hiking trail circles the water with several viewpoints along the way, each providing a unique perspective of the natural wonder. The serene beauty of Lago di Braies has earned it Unesco World Heritage status.

Also known as Monte Specie, Strudelkopf is a prominent mountain in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. The hike to the summit isn’t quite as challenging as some of the other loftier peaks, making it suitable for both seasoned and casual hikers. The surrounding area is also rich in history, with remnants of World War I fortifications visible along the trails. The combination of scenic landscapes and historical significance makes Strudelkopf one of the Dolomite’s more popular hiking destinations. Make sure you stop at the Strudelkopf Panoramic Balcony where you can immerse yourself in 360-degree panoramic views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Cadini di Misurina, and the Cristallo Group.

A significant battleground during World War I, Monte Piana Mountain is steeped in history and boasts an extraordinary backdrop with incredible views of the surrounding Dolomites. The plateau is accessible via various hiking trails and there is also a shuttle service during the summer months. As you climb to its summit, you can learn about its tempestuous past as you explore the poignant open-air museum, which includes trenches, bridges, bunkers and other wartime relics.
