Beautiful Albania

This was our third cycling trip with Exodus & it didn’t disappoint. Albania is a stunning country but also very mountainous so a good level of cycling fitness is necessary although there is always the option of an e bike. The scenery is incredible & the local people really friendly- they would often wave & cheer us on as we panted up the hills! We were blessed with great weather although it was very hot in the full sun & it was really Important to stay hydrated. The food was excellent & as a vegetarian I ate really well. The baked cheese was a particular favourite & there was plenty of fish or meat for those who ate it. The accommodation was mixed & varied but on the whole was really good.

Most Inspirational Moment

Beautiful Gjirokastra was definitely a highlight & I wish we could have spent longer there. The most inspirational moment though for me was cycling up the pass on the last day. As more of a runner than a cyclist I was really pleased to have done it alongside my friends.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader Erlis & driver/mechanic Klodi were a great team & we were well supplied with support & water throughout the day. Erlis is a class act & has a real calm presence. His relationship with the families & staff in the hotels & restaurants was really heartwarming to see & we were always ushered straight to a prepared table where the food soon followed. His passion (& sometimes frustration) for his country was obvious & I found his talk on the subject absolutely fascinating. His grasp of the language is excellent & he could always answer any questions we had.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definitely train before you go as from the first day it’s a tough one & even the so called easier days are full on. If you’re there in the heat like we were, make sure to take rehydration tablets for in your water. As someone who doesn’t eat chocolate (we had chocolate & a banana each day) I’d recommend taking extra snacks, particularly salt based ones such as nuts. If you’re able I’d definitely book an extra day or 2 at the end of the trip rather than heading straight home like we did. It’s a real whistle stop trip with very little down time.

Beautiful week in the Alps!

I booked this trip last minute to join my mum and cousin and I have no regrets! It was an amazing week of trekking in the most glorious scenery, with an utterly lovely bunch of people. I spent lots of time in the Alps as a child, so this trip was not only nostalgic but also brought me to brand-new places. It was definitely a challenging week but in the best way possible. We were very lucky to have Mariá as our guide, he was generous, kind and patient with us all, sharing his extensive knowledge of the mountains, ecology and wildlife along the way and making us all feel part of the team. The accommodation and food were amazing, despite my awkward dietary requirements, each hotel was a delight in its own way and offered far more comfort than I was expecting. I left the week feeling heart-full and accomplished. What more could you ask for. I highly recommend this trip!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mariá was a brilliant guide, he showed consistent care for each member of the group, patience and kindness throughout. He was great company and shared his extensive knowledge along the way.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack light, wear in your boots and size up a little to avoid blisters, embrace the grind uphill, the views are worth it!

Excellent tour, well worth it

Very enjoyable tour in a very interesting country with a lot of history. Spectacular mountain scenery (some long drives but split up with stops along the journeys). Lovely Ottoman towns and cities, such as Berat and Gjirokaster, pretty villages visited en route to cities. Tourist resorts such as Saranda, and large cities such as Vlore and Durres are far from pretty or attractive. A lot of the hotels we stayed in were good and all central when in cities. Good value for money, both cost of the tour itself and in Albania in general.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting pretty Ottoman cities such as Berat and Gjirokaster. Learning about the country's history and troubled past and travelling along the Vjosa Valley in the south - very scenic. Albania is 70% mountains and is very scenic, whether you are the mountains and viewing the plains below, or driving through the plains with the mountain ranges around you. Meeting local people and visiting family homes.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Currency - as previous reviews mention, credit cards are not accepted in a lot of establishments, in particular restaurants and shops I visited. In a lot of places we visited, Euros were accepted and some items were in LEK and Euros. You can't buy LEK in the UK, you need to change money when you are there. The best rate was in an exchange bureau not far from the hotel in Tirana, which our guide (Armir) showed us. There is a bureau at the airport on arrival but the rate is probably not very good, as is usually the case in airports - follow your tour leader's advice re exchanging money, you don't need to change cash immediately. I exchanged £100 into LEK on the first day in Tirana and it lasted me throughout the holiday, including tips. I used credit card for paying for the meal in Hotel Panorama in Kruje on my last night, as I had used up the last of my LEK that day. I also took Euros and used those where they were accepted, in particular souvenir shops in some places and towards the end of the holiday when my supply of LEK was very low. You could even tip the guide and driver in Euros if you run out of LEK. Essentially, don't change large sum of money when you arrive, see how you go and then change small sums as and when, and take Euros with you as you can always use them on a future holiday to another country. Any unspent LEK you can always exchange at the airport on leaving the country, before going through security. At the time, 100 LEK was about the same as one Euro, so easy conversion rate with your Euros or when buying anything. Prices in Albania are a lot lower than in other European countries and eating/drinking out is fairly cheap - £8 approximately for a pizza (and it was large) and two soft drinks! Ice creams in Berat were very cheap in cafes etc (about 35p for one scoop), some cities charged a lot more - especially in Durres where they were about £1a scoop. Tourist Information - For pre-trip reading and for reference during the trip, take a good guidebook with you (I took the Bradt guide to Albania). Tourist information leaflets and maps are few and far between and a lot of the hotels we visited didn't have either. Tourist information offices, when open, don't really have a lot of info compared with other European cities. The tour leader gave orientation walking tours in some cities or towns; we arrived at and visited a lot of the towns and cities late in the day so you don't get much time in them- we only had one group evening meal (the final night) so we made good use of our time after any orientation tour by exploring by ourselves (we found everywhere very safe to do so). Group meals were always at lunch times so you didn't really need a meal in the evening some times, Note the lunch included at village of Dhoksat was plentiful and excellent, you certainly won't want to eat a lot (if anything) in the evening back in Gjirokaster - note the meal prepared and cooked by the family in Dhoksat is vegetarian - tell your tour leader early on in the holiday if you have food allergies or dietary requirements, or would like meat/fish - as Armir had contacted them well beforehand in this respect.

Fabulous trip - a perfect mix of beautiful Cape Town, great activities and luxurious wine tasting

This was a wonderful trip! Cape Town is just a stunning city, with so many things to do. We weren’t able to get to the top of Table Mountain because of the overcast weather, but it was a lovely hike nonetheless – all the hiking around Cape Town was great. Simonstown is a pretty little town and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the sea kayaking – I don’t normally take to being on the water, but it was loads of fun. The visit to the wine lands absolutely exceeded my expectations. Stellenbosch is a delightful place – an easy, pleasant university town with lots of cafés, restaurants and shops. I was also not expecting the calibre and quality of accommodation that we had. The hotel (just outside of Stellenbosch) was gorgeous with large rooms, huge grounds and the vineyards we visited were, for the most part, far more high-end than I was expecting. The wines were excellent – especially the whites for me (though I generally prefer red). It was just perfect being able to relax and enjoy the luxury after the physical activities. Cycling between flowering fields and the ocean was a pleasure too. This trips requires you to be fit, but it’s not difficult. I’m 61 years old and I found the level of activities just right. This was my seventh trip with Exodus. They’ve all be great – but this one is my favourite so far. Hands down. I highly recommend it!

Most Inspirational Moment

It was such an interesting and pleasant mix of different activities and atmospheres, it's hard to choose one part in particular. I loved the cities/towns, the mix of active and more cultural relaxing days. It was a beautifully balanced trip. That said - it often comes down to the people on the trip. We were only 3 guests and two guides, but we all got on like a house on fire - it was delightful! Easy, comfortable and lots of fun.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Adonia was lovely. He really had to work hard to juggle the activities to work around the weather (it was early spring there at the time and it was a bit cold and wet). He did it all seamlessly, switching days to be sure we could go sea kayaking and cycling. He was always very conscious of our safety without in any way being overbearing about it. And he knows the area well, so he was able to tell us all about where we were as we went along. Ernest, the other guide, was lovely too. They worked beautifully together and we had wonderful conversations over glasses of wine at the end of the day.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you go in September, be sure to bring warmer clothing. Layering is the best way to go. If the sun comes out it's much warmer, but if it clouds over it can be very cool.

Great walks on a variety of terrain

A great holiday, with amazing guides, beautiful beaches, a lovely group and ideal walking weather – what more could you ask for. The walks vary in length and terrain, so be prepared to clamber up rocks, walk on soft sand and along rocky cliff tops. Interesting activities and relaxation time also included.

Most Inspirational Moment

The beautiful beaches, sunsets and views.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Luis and Ines were exceptional leaders, very attentive and organised ensuring the group were well looked after. Both leaders were great fun and passed on their knowledge of what we saw/visited on the walks on a daily basis. They took the time to get to know the group, listening to feedback and answering questions. Both leaders went over and above to ensure the group had a great holiday, which was definitely achieved.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Wear walking boots or shoes, not trainers, as some of the terrain is rocky and uneven therefore foot/ankle support is required. Take plenty of sunscreen and insect repellent.

Exceptionally good adventure holiday

I’ve been lucky enough to travel on many small group adventure holidays over the years, and this is one of the absolute best. It features a well designed itinerary that balances activity and rest, an exceptional tour leader, and wonderful settings for wildlife viewing, scenery and culture. Although some of the walks are on the challenging side (at least if you’re unfit like I am), the days of travelling provide a good opportunity to rest up and to reflect on what you’ve seen. I finished the trip feeling both that I’d seen and done a lot, and that I was rested and had been able to relax – not something I find with many holidays where it’s either one or the other! The variety is exceptional, feeling like several holidays in one and yet all integrated well into an overall package. The standard of the accommodation and food was also really good. I’d very highly recommend the trip to anyone who enjoys this type of holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing manta rays close up underwater was the absolute highlight for me, but also seeing orangutans and gibbons in the wild and all of the time on the boat were wonderful experiences.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Elly was a truly exceptional group leader who is surely deserving of formal recognition from a tour leader awards programme. Very well organised, caring, helpful, great communication skills, assertive enough to get things done but never anything other than kind to everyone. She knew the trip inside out and made every element run smoothly - there was nothing she hadn't anticipated and sorted. On our free days she accompanied us for free on walking tours of the relevant places, something that is not required of a tour leader and was done entirely out of her own goodwill. She managed a difficult situation when one of our group fell seriously ill and had to be hospitalised, ensuring that he and his wife were supported even when they were on a different island, whilst also delivering the itinerary for everyone else to a high standard. This must have been extremely hard for her but she never gave any sign of it.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't underestimate the toll that the heat and humidity of the jungle will take on you, particularly when combined with the jet lag and tiredness after a long flight. Take it easy and don't push yourself too much. The six hour jungle trek in Bukit Lawang is really tough (I didn't do it myself) and the participants didn't see anything more than we saw on the three hour trips. You definitely need walking boots with ankle support - you'll be glad of them several times over the course of the trip and they're worth the extra weight. The boat is not as basic as the trip notes suggest - if you have been on other 'liveaboard' boats you are likely to be pleasantly surprised. There is electricity for charging, space to sit and relax and if you choose to sleep on deck, you'll find it very comfortable and enjoy a good view of the stars. There are multiple en suite bathrooms with showers and plenty of space. Some of the hotels only have bar soap so if you prefer a liquid soap then it's best to take some with you, plus some shampoo and conditioner. It's always hard to get a sense of the fitness level required for a trip as what one person finds hard can differ from another. The challenging factors here are the heat and humidity, and some short but steep up and down hill walks including multiple steps. In Bukit Lawang the paths are rough and full of hazards like roots and fallen trees, and can be extremely muddy and slippery. The pace is always as slow as you need with multiple supportive and sympathetic guides and I never felt pressured to go faster than I could manage. You also do have the option to miss out any of the active elements if you need to. I was very worried about the temple in Bali with the multiple steps but actually it's not too bad at all, as the steps are broken up by stops to see things. If you could manage the 3 hour treks in Bukit Lawang you can certainly manage that. The snorkelling is generally easy in still water with good buoyancy, suitable for beginners, and again well supported. The only more challenging swim is for the manta rays. You need to be ready to go quickly and to stick with the guide and swim fast.

Photos don't do it justice!

This was my partners and my first exodus and group walking tour and we couldn’t have been happier with how the week went! We were by far the youngest’s on our tour but we still had a lot of fun mixing and getting to know each of our tour members. You stay in a small town up in hills away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist towns. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Nico our guide is very informative about the local area from the towns, landscapes, were to eat, which beaches to go to, organized extras like local limoncello tasting and very helpful if you needed to know anything from wear to buy new shoes if yours fell apart to bus routes and timetables. The scenery you get to take in is amazing and are your typical postcard pictures! The treks are 80-90% down hill with alottttt of stairs with the exception of Mt Vesuvius and Monte Tre Calli, if you can make it through Day 1 – Monte Tre Calli then the rest of the week is a breeze!

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking around the crater of Mt Vesuvius, finishing all the treks every day, taking in the amazing scenery from the top of the mountains.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nico was great, had loads of information to tell us and answered just about every question thrown at him and would give us a detailed briefing for the next days adventure every night using his map.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The tour notes state you need hiking boots however you can get away with some good sturdy trail/trekking shoes which will save you the space and weight of heavy hiking boots. If you go in summer take a water bottle you can refill at the many taps they show you along the way, shorts and shirts are fine however also wise to pack a pair pants for the days when you tackle the tracks that are quite overgrown.

A fantastic trip!

I just had a fabulous week at Chalet Chalupa! The hosts, Adrian & Helena, were amazing. They were very friendly and always made sure that we’re happy. They always prepared delicious meals and cakes with wide variety (local, Mediterranean, healthy and oriental) and we all enjoyed it together with the group of great people. The room was specious and comfortable, the common areas were also always clean and had warm atmosphere. The car ride by them was also really fun and informative about the trip/area. Our guide, Shaun, was very knowledgeable and flexible based on the weather etc. This was my first hiking experience and he absolutely made it special. Everyday there were full of amazing views and walks!

Cave painted

Enjoyable and interesting trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Eleven thousand years old sea cave paintings.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Enthusiastic and patient. Very laid back and friendly style but on the ball when he needed to be.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The local Gazerotta wine is fantastic. You don’t need full on hiking boots in the hot weather. Walking sandals are more appropriate in the heat.

Fantastico!

Wow! Exodus … thank you …we had a fantastic week. The trip was truly amazing. It was a great combination of leisurely (but hot!) walking in the Tuscan countryside, cultural days in Siena and Florence and superb wine tastings. We were fortunate to share our experience with a wonderful group of people and enjoy a few evenings (and bottles!) dining on the lovely terrace of Hotel Le Renaie. The weather was superb and scenery absolutely spectacular.

Most Inspirational Moment

It was all memorable. Each day was different!

Thoughts on Group Leader

A big shout out to Ale Moreiras! Ale was a fantastic group leader. He was so knowledgeable, enthusiastic and good humoured (even when some of the group missed the train in Siena!) Ale made sure we all had a great time and looked after us! Thank you Ale!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do this trip if you enjoy leisurely walking, some good wines and a little culture thrown in! Sadly, there were some negative reviews because the previous accommodation/meals were not so good. This has now been rectified and we loved Hotel Le Renaie and the chilled vibe. A great find Exodus!
