One of our best holidays ever

The linear nature of the journey, flying into Port Elizabeth and out of Cape Town rather than in and out of Cape Town added outward time but importantly ruled out back-tracking which would have added travelling time unproductively and would have been boring. We were blessed with an exceptional tour leader (more later) and felt we enjoyed all events to the maximum possible with the best sub-contractors available. Long journeys were broken down into manageable chunks by inserting small stops and this allowed the driver recovery time and also added interest for the party. We were taken ‘beneath the surface’ on this trip with this leader and that added so much to our comprehension and enjoyment. The tour was well-paced with never less than two nights in one place so you did not feel you were ‘living out of a suitcase’ which would possibly have led to exhaustion, both physical and mental.

Most Inspirational Moment

For both of us, the Langa township tour. The Democratic Alliance here in Cape Province (unlike the ANC in other parts of SA) is making a real difference to the lives of all the people starting from the bottom up with structured layers of building which provides incentive. We were impressed (nay, humbled) by the way people of all colours seem to be pulling together to advance the lot of all after the dreadful years of apartheid. Using two individual hand-picked locals found by our tour guide rather than just going to a tour sub-contractor again allowed us to get ' beneath the surface'. The passion they all showed was truly heartening and the lack of resentment, often commented on, was (again) humbling.

Read the comments already given. In addition, Justin said he was 24 hours on duty for us. He had a chest infection needing medication but he didn't allow that to get him down or detract from his level of care to us. What more can we say? One in a million.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If Justin is your leader, listen carefully to all his advice e.g. 'Do not go on the Waterfall Trail in Tsitsikamma, it is too dangerous'. Be sensible - we aborted the Suspension Bridge walk in that park as we felt under-fit and too 'frail' to complete it - Take personal responsibility and don't end up embarrassing your Tour Leader. Go to South Africa with an open mind and this trip and this leader will open your eyes . We have had so much comment (starting with the taxi driver home from Heathrow) that 'You're one of the very few people who have come home with a positive view of South Africa; most people think it dangerous and going smartly downhill'. No preconceptions, please - If you go looking for the negative, you'll certainly find it in the poverty and the history; the future looks bright for SA to us provided the Democratic Alliance wins and the ANC go to the wall. There is enormous potential in this berautiful land and in the people.

a trip along the silk road

This was a busy trip through three very contrasting countries. Almost a surfeit of historical monuments in Uzbekistan, just a glimpse of Kazakhstan and then the natural beauty of Kyrgyzstan. Some long bus drives but with plenty of “photo stops” and the drives are a great way to appreciate the scenery and see a little of local life along the way. The food was fine, and it was fairly easy to avoid meat, with plenty of delicious salads and pumpkin manti (a type of dumpling) usually available. Also some lovely soups, but often with unexpected chunks of lamb or beef. I did also enjoy the plov and the kebabs, as well as the fresh bread. The people were mostly friendly, welcoming and curious – we encountered no problems.

Most Inspirational Moment

Kyrgyzstan - especially the yurt stay and the walk, but also the sheep, cattle and horses with their herders on horseback, coming down from their summer pastures.

Thoughts on Group Leader

For me, both Dilshod and Ermek were great leaders, despite their very different pesonalities.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a small towel for the yurt stay, and reasonable walking shoes. Do your shopping in Bukhara as there aren't many other opportunities. Learn a few words of Russian - it is spoken in all three countries and English isn't widely understood. Be able to carry your luggage a short distance - some of the hotel rooms are upstairs (no lifts) and also you have to carry it across the Kazakhstan - Kyrgyzstan border.

Sicily in a week

My husband and I had a fabulous trip to Sicily – a place I knew I would adore and I was not wrong. In 8 days you can only scrape the surface of this wonderful island but this round trip was a great way to see what it can offer. It was a perfect introduction to somewhere we will return to many times.

Most Inspirational Moment

The aching beauty of Eriche, Noto and Cefalu.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marco was a charming leader, efficient, informative with a dark sense of humour. And he was extremely good company.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There is an element of walking every day so if you are infirm this may not be the trip for you.

Walking in Madeira

Holiday was very good once in Madeira.

Booking and office support from Exodus UK was poor.

We paid a surcharge of over £300 pounds to get flights six months prior to departure.

There were people in our group who arrived later in the day that didn’t pay any surcharges. We could have got a later flight also….

No one has come back to me about this after my first survey.

Also, Exodus don’t have enough staff in the London office to even answer your phones.

Dreadfull in light of the money we your customer pay.

SORT IT OUT. That was my fourth holiday with Exodus, I doubt personally that I will book another in light of the London office. It’s a shame you let all of your reps that are actually in front of your customers down. Learn the lesson.

Reply from Exodus

We would like to thank Rob for taking the time to provide us with feedback both on his holiday evaluation form (HEF) and in his review. Whilst HEFs are read by 2 members of staff, we endeavour to make it clear both in the email we send inviting clients to complete their HEFs, as well as at the end of the survey itself that due to the volume of feedback we receive, we are unable to respond on an individual basis to the comments our clients make. We do, as a result of this, provide an email address which clients are welcome to use if they would like to raise any specific concerns to our customer services team. We would like to apologise if this could be further clarified. Flight prices can vary quite significantly throughout the year and even when flights are booked early, sometimes a supplement can be applicable, as explained in our trip notes. We were pleased Rob enjoyed his time in Madeira, but we are nonetheless very sorry that he was disappointed with the support he received from Exodus prior to travel.  –  Marta Marinelli, Product Manager.

Cycling In Greece

This was our first trip with Exodus Travels and to Greece. This was an excellent way to really see the countryside of Greece. We went to many local places that your average tour bus trips would not go. We had a larger group of 16 people so we were fortunate to have two fantastic guides (Niovi and Demitrius) as well as a wonderful driver. (Also named Demetrius) This trip is highly recommended if you want to see more of the local culture of Greece. My only suggestion is to definitely upgrade the quality of bikes used on this trip. On our last day of the trip my husband had a small medical emergency. Niovi helped us handle this situation with complete professionalism and ease. She helped us locate a private doctor in Athens (on a Saturday!) stayed with us, and helped with translation with the doctor. We both will be forever grateful for her assistance!

Most Inspirational Moment

We loved visiting the ancient Theater of Epidarus as well as being able to visit a local organic vineyard and see the production in action, as well as sample some fantastic wine! Also, just some of the breathtaking views of the ocean from our hotel room.

Thoughts on Group Leader

As I have mentioned above I cannot say enough good things about our lead guide, Niovi. She went beyond her job duties to help us in a stressful time of need. She was very personable and tried to met all the needs of our group members which is a difficult task with 16 people!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Please make sure you read the travel description of this trip and that you are physically able to ride a bike at least 25-35 miles comfortably and can climb hills. This trip is described as a moderate difficulty level and if you are not as fit as you should be then request an ebike so you can fully participate.
