As the Nike Ad says "Just Do It"

Having travelled extensively but not to Bulgaria previously I was very interested to see what I would think of the country and I wasn’t disappointed. I flew direct from Ireland on Thursday and spent two days in Sofia before I joined a group of 15 others on the Saturday. I am not surprised that our trip was full/sold out. We spent a great week enjoying all aspects of rural Bulgaria. The walks averaged out at ten miles a day based in Hotel Yagodina that is ideally situated and very well run. The weather was perfect, despite many forecasts that predicted otherwise.

Most Inspirational Moment

The consistency of how beautiful the views were each day when we lunched. The other aspect that really appealed to me was how natural the food we ate during the week was and how little processed food was served during our stay at Hotel Yagodina.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nelly's command of the English language is the best I have ever experienced in a non native speaker. Her willingness to help and accommodate people in the group was outstanding. Her passion and knowledge of the flora, fauna, folklore and history of Bulgaria was unsurpassable. I believe she has found her forté as a guide and I intend to nominate her in the Exodus Annual Leader Awards.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Some of the group members who didn't spend a night or two in Sofia either at the beginning or the end of the holiday regretted their decision. I really enjoyed my two day stay in the capital and saw more of it than I imagined I would when I joined an organised cycle tour of the city that covers about 20kms and lasts about three hours.

Custom trip women, wine and walking

This was my first solo trip across the “pond” with a custom trip arranged and set up by agent Sue Flemming. I had heard good things about how she looked after her clients and she did not disappoint. She was on this trip and ensured that we got where we had to without losing track of anyone and ensured that we had a good time.
The two guides, Rita Caetano and Lina Ferreira were superb. For such a young gal, Rita went above and beyond to make the trip safe, enjoyable and with good humour. Lina was absolutely an excellent guide as well and so knowledgeable about the area, flora and fauna and if she didn’t have the exact answer, she would look it up and tell us as soon as she knew the answer.

Most Inspirational Moment

I don’t know if I would call it inspirational but certainly, the most memorable moment was at the start of one day of walking . On one day,we started by walking through a small village where I had an encounter with a local lady. She pointed to a tree full of cherries, then pulled off a large branch (and a small one )and handed it to me and encouraged me to eat the cherries. I don’t think I will ever forget that moment. The cherries were delicious,by the way. Another was this beautiful organic winery that we went to which had spectacular organic food and wine. I tasted the best gluten free bread ever at this winery. The scenery was so spectacular that I felt like I wanted to have a constant video camera going to capture every moment.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rita was excellent as was the other guide Lina. Both were kind, caring, generous with their time to answer any and all questions. They often went above and beyond to ensure that we had the best trip possible. Rita would often drop back to see that we were all doing ok and then would bound back up to the front. Some of us nicknamed her ninja girl because she would suddenly appear without even snapping a twig underfoot, ha ha. As I was usually at the back of the pack, I had the good fortune to spend a lot of time with Lina who with deserved pride, shared her knowledge about Portugal . She was so knowledgeable about the various flora and their uses . It made for a much more interesting trip for me which could have been just an exercise in trying to stay with the pack. I learned much more and have a great appreciation of the beauty of the Portugal countryside.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Not really as I’m a pretty neophyte traveller myself. I prefer guided tours as a result. Pretty much all of the other travellers in this group were experienced travellers.

Walking on the Greek islands

I really enjoyed the holiday. Our guide Cecile was excellent and really made for a lovely trip in terms of looking after us and recommending and arranging meals at local restaurants. The accommodation was very good.
My only disappointment was that most of the journeys were on Catamarans rather than ferries. Not what I expected from the brochure which said the journeys between Athens and the islands would be on ferries. I did not now catamarans would be regarded as ferries. I made my own arrangements from Rafina to Naxos when I found out the journey was not on a ferry. I really would have preferred to have traveled from Paros to Athens on the last day by ferry instead of 5 hours inside a catamaran on which we could not move around or go outside apart from a few minutes at each port.
That is my only complaint.
Overall it was a great trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Eating at a restaurant on Santorini looking at the sunset.. Visiting Akrotiri and the museum in Fira. Walking the Byzantine trail on Paros.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Absolutely outstanding.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for walking rocky paths in the heat.

Great trip, but a couple of REALLY tough climbs

We had an excellent group of five, and Giovanni and Marc our guides were excellent.

The scenery, mountains, beaches, cliff tops, historic ruins are wonderful as are the wild flowers and flamingos. The hotels were all of a good quality and most had swimming pools.

The cycling is harder than the 3 rating suggests. I’ve done a number of cycling trips, but days 2 and 3 have serious climbs on them and two of the five of us had to take the van for the last part.

Foodwise, I’m a vegetarian and while there was always something to eat, it was more often grilled veg than would have been ideal. We mostly ate in fish restaurants. That said, there were a couple of standout meals that were superb.

The bikes are good quality, perhaps a little heavy, and provided with panniers – best to put them in the van on the climb days.

Most Inspirational Moment

Drinking cold beer in a cliff top bar, watching the sun go down after a hard days cycling.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent, Giovanni and Marc took turns to cycle with the group. They worked together really well and I think we all felt well looked after. They clearly are knowledgeable and passionate about the area, its history and wildlife and were delighted to share this with us.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you get offered the choice, the wine tasting is good fun - I bought a couple of bottles and it does travel!

Beautiful country

Slovenia is beautiful – clean, green, unspoilt, with beautiful lakes, waterfalls and mountains.

The hotel is great with excellent evening meals and lovely views.Rooms are spacious with a really good shower and comfortable bed. The staff are very friendly.

Radovljica is an excellent base for the week – the old town is pretty with a few decent restaurants, an ice cream shop (!) and regular buses to Bled, Ljubljana etc. Buses are cheap.

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing to the viewpoint above Lake Bled and taking in that stunning view. Admiring the thundering waterfalls and flower-filled meadows

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bugy and Aleš were expert mountain guides and a good laugh.

Advice for Potential Travellers

A short city break in Ljubljana before the week’s walking starts is highly recommended - say from the Thursday. You’ll be too tired afterwards! Take poles! If you can fit in two pairs, both lightweight shoes and boots with ankle support are useful. Boots are essential. The easy (lake) walks really are easy and the harder (mountain) walks really are hard, harder than other Level 3 holidays I have been on. Three of the walks aren’t great if you’re not good with heights.

Walking in Albania

The guide was excellent. Think it should be rated Level 4. Food generally not great

Most Inspirational Moment

Haven’t got one.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walking was hard. All the walks had constant ascents and descents on difficult terrain.

A trip of 2 halves

Loved Armenia, Georgia itinerary needs improvement

Most Inspirational Moment

Everything in Armenia was beautiful.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rafik in Armenia was amazing. The group leader in Georgia did not give enough information about timings, did not organise vegetarian main courses for the vegetarian as the starters which are plentiful are mainly vegetarian.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you book in on line and print your boarding pass to avoid a fee on checking in at Gatwick. Be prepared for your check in luggage to be broken in to. 3 out of 11 of our group had their bags opened and rifled through. Get a customs lock so they don’t cut the lock. Consider getting your bag wrapped. You do not need water purification tablets. Bottled water is supplied and easily available. Day 13 is a at least 12 hours so have your last dinner together the day before. Get the jeep as the alpine walk is hard work.

Truly Wonderful

A really lovely trip to The Azores. A packed itinerary with whale and dolphin watching and exploring the island landscape, which is one of a kind! We saw tropical dolphins, playful bottle nosed and common dolphins and the small striped dolphins. Some played around the boat racing with us across the waves. We saw pilot whales and the magnificent sperm whales. It was a rigid inflatable boat so we were close to the water and it was both fun and exciting.

Most Inspirational Moment

The whales.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I have to tell you about the guide: Nuno Garcia. He is the nicest, most considerate and patient guide we have ever encountered. He was full of fun and always there to help anyone who needed it. He would stand at the harbour smiling and waving as we left to whale watch and he would be there ready with a smile and a wave when we returned. An excellent guide in every way.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a variety of clothing because the weather can be very changeable.

Walking in Provence...Amazing!

This was our first Exodus experience and it exceeded our expectations. The accommodation in Greoux les Bains was very comfortable, staff friendly, breakfast great. Great dining experiences there and other restaurants within close proximity. The walks were all unique and different and not too challenging. The scenery was unbelievable and our guide Isabelle was first class. She was super knowledgeable, passionate, friendly with a great sense of humour. She was also very patient and nothing was ever too much trouble. Our picnics under her guidance were always a highlight. To our delight, we had a lovely bunch of like-minded hikers on our tour. We would have no hesitation recommending this trip to others.

Most Inspirational Moment

We loved the all the walks, but our favourites were the Verdon Gorges and the hike from the village of Moustiers Ste Marie. Scenery was breathtaking!

Thoughts on Group Leader

As alluded to above, our guide Isabelle was first class. She was super knowledgeable, passionate about the local culture and the environment, friendly with a great sense of humour. She was also very patient and nothing was ever too much trouble. Our picnics under her guidance were always a highlight.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you are considering doing this trip make sure you pack your bathers as the swim in the pool each afternoon was a great way to finish the day, before dinner.

Excellent way to visit Croatia

The previous reviews say it all, a great way to experience Croatia. I had already visited Dubrovnik and Split so for me the mountain hikes were what I enjoyed most especially those in the Paklenica National Park. On the Thursday hike we stopped at a mountain hut for delicious bean soup. Vegetarian choices in restaurants were available and the home cooking at the restaurant on the second evening in Bol was delicious!

Most Inspirational Moment

The views from the mountain tops and the abundance of wild flowers. The waterfalls in Krka National Park were amazing and certainly worth visiting, although very busy with tourists.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide Ivan Rakonic was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the geography and history of the country, very friendly, great mountain guide and the bonus of a good sense of humour! He looked after the group very well and made sure everyone was enjoying themselves.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Good hiking boots and walking poles to help on the rocky terrain, especially for downhill in the Paklenica National Park.
