CYCLE THE BALTICS

A really excellent holiday that takes in some amazing countries and scenery. Everything about this holiday was great from the cities of Tallin, Riga and Vilnius to the Curonian Strait, beatiful beaches and lakes galore. The quality of the food and the accommodation was also surprisingly good.

WALKING IN THE WESTERN DOLOMITES

I found this a very rewarding trip with some of the most excellent walking I have done on a group holiday. The leaders were top notch and made the whole experience very enjoyable, not to mention a lot of fun.

Most Inspirational Moment

The view from the top of the cable car on the first walk set the scene for the whole holiday.Discussing the possibility of other trips with the leaders

Thoughts on Group Leader

They were both excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just enjoy

WALKING IN THE WESTERN DOLOMITES

This is a great week.  The Val di Fassa is actually 5 valleys or areas – and with the benefit of the organisation of the guides and the weather allowing – you can experience a real variety of walking in only a week.   On our trip we had pretty good weather so did some ridge walking, some walking around the huge limestone pillars looking out to other peaks, along balcony routes, through some great flower meadows/rock garden type places – and heading over some Cols with great surprising views and panoramas as the reward.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The leaders were Eric and Albert.  They modified the walks to ensure we best utilised the weather - so we did the high level walks on the sunniest days rather than risking losing the views.  They both have a good sense of humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There is a choice of menu every night - read the Italian as well as the English as sometimes the translation is a bit strange.Take small Euro denominations for the hutsProsecco was a good price at the hotel in Moena

MONT BLANC TO THE MATTERHORN

Fantastic trip, somewhat challenging but that’s all part of the fun. Great sense of achievement at the end. Brilliant scenery, and we were lucky with the weather too. Very well organised trip, with an extremely competent mountain guide, who was happy for people to walk at their own pace whether that was fast or slow.

The camping was very civilised – the only campsite chores that had to be done were taking down your own tent and helping out with the washing up now and then. This made changing campsites each day hassle free. Laundry facilities were available en route – I didn’t need to take as much stuff as I did.

The food surpassed all my expectations, and I am a fussy eater. Three courses every night of the best food I have ever had whilst camping.

Overall one of the best trips I have done – recommended!

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

This was an excellent trip. The chalet accommodation was of a very high standard and loved the hot tub that overlooked the glacier. The walks were very good and matched the abilities of all group members.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking on the Italian side of the Alps and visiting Courmayer.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was very good and I had confidence in his technical skills. He led the walks so everybody enjoyed the day. The staff who ran the chalet were very helpful and cooked excellent meals.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you have never been to the Alps walking before this is an excellent holiday as an introduction to walking in the Alpine peaks.

WALKING IN TUSCANY

This is a great holiday. It’s a mixture of perfect location, long walks with amazing views and gorgeous home-cooked food. Braccicorti really is a little slice of paradise and the pool is just wonderful after a long, hot day’s walking.

Most Inspirational Moment

The views and scenery on all of the walks.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Liz was a first rate tour leader - friendly but not 'in your face', well-organised and really cared about making sure the group had a good week.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do remember your waterproof - I forgot mine but fortunately someone else in the group had two. Even in the height of summer, it can rain up in the moutains!

MONT BLANC CIRCUIT

This was a wonderful trip, and it would make an excellent introduction to trekking in the Alps.

Most Inspirational Moment

There was so much going for this trip, - a lovely group, stunning scenery, amazing flowers, challenging walking and excellent food, - that it is hard to pick any thing out. However I found reaching the summit of the Brevent on the final day very moving.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Without a doubt, Rupert is one of the most gifted leaders I have come across. Consistently aware, caring, helpful, humourous and informative, I feel privileged to have been on one of his trips. High praise too for Graham, who fed us all superbly, as well as managing all the shopping, camp transfers etc with great good humour. We owe the success of the trip to both of them. Thank you.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go for it

MONTENEGRO, BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA

My first experience of an Exodus holiday proved to be inspirational. So much beauty; so much to learn; I didn’t want it to end.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Gulf of Kotor takes your breath away and the city itself, with its ancient battlements, was awe inspiring.Walking round the Black Lake, surrounded by glorious mountains, was impressive.Driving alongside the River Piva on the way over to Bosnia was incredible. The wooded mountains, the deep green river and the miles and miles of Alpine meadows covered in flowers with not a soul around. What a contrast to our own overpopulated country. Learning about the siege of Sarajevo; so poignent when we realised that our guide, Anaid, had been imprisoned at that time. And the contrast between the old city and the more modern part. And the beautiful Venetian cafe where we indulged in amazing coffee and cakes. And climbing up at evening to witness the mortor which was fired to mark the end of that day's fast; then all the lights came on on the minarets and the people round us shared their Rhamadam bread and Turkish delight with us.The day at Lukomir. Wild roses and many other flowers grew alongside the canyon where we walked and had a picnic supplied by Anaid's mother. I'm not exactly young, and I found it fairly tough going, but I loved every minute of it.The Kravice Waterfalls: We swam in the clear, refreshing lake below the falls and thought nothing could get better than this!Fresh trout at the restaurant at the source of the Briva River, opposite a beautiful monastery. The river water was crystal clear and lovely to drink. And finally, back to Dubrovnik, to the Old City . I wish we had had time to walk round the walls ; we had to choose between that and a swim in the Adriatic.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Anaid made our holiday special. He is a historian and even the extremely complex history and politics of the Balkans came alive as he explained it.He was well organised and very personable and chatty;  a good combination.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is not a strenuous holiday, though there's a lot of fairly hairy travelling. A good job our driver was so careful and reliable.Be prepared to soak up all the information about an area which is unfamiliar to most of us. Enjoy the remoteness and the amazing terrain.

TOUR DU MONT BLANC

A great trip with stunning scenery.Long days short nights.

Most Inspirational Moment

The view from Grand col Ferret. The camaraderie of the group members.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rupert was very knowledgeable about the local flora & fauna, customs & food.He tried hard to keep together a group of differing fitness levels & was always encouraging everyone.

Advice for Potential Travellers

A good level of fitness is required & be prepared for very basic levels of accommodation in the hotel dormitories'.Keep your rucksack as light as you can.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

I had the time of my life on my cycling trip to Croatia. Some of the cycling was challenging, especially in the July heat, but the beauty and variety of Croatia, the organisational skills of our great guide Ana, the lovely food and friendly people made for a holiday which had a true feelgood factor.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling through the vineyards and down amazing coastal roads with unbeatable views of clear turquoise water, and smelling the lavender and rosemary as we whizzed by. Followed by a lovely cold beer and a bit of banter. One of the days when we had lovely cycling, followed by lunch (amazingly sophisticated home made cheeses and meats, desserts and grappa) under a vine-covered café in the mountains, then later an amazing dinner in an agroturism restaurant in the country with their home grown food and wine. The islands were really special, and not all spoiled by mass tourism.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Went the extra mile for her group, shared her favourite places with us. Full of energy, and did everything she could to make sure that we had the very best time possible, including running down the street to buy us crisps to have with our beers!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware that July is incredibly hot, and if you aren't really fit and/or don't do well in the heat, then it may not be the best time to do this cycling trip, May/June or September would probably be better. And though the holiday is graded moderate, some of the hills are challenging. You can go on the support bus at times (as I did) but get into training first.
