The temple complex at Angkor Wat is undeniably one of the world’s most spectacular archaeological sites and a photographer’s paradise. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features over 100 stone temples built by the Khmer kings at various times during a 400-year period. One of the most impressive buildings is the Bayon at the centre of Angkor Thom. This impressive temple features 54 intricately carved Gothic towers complete with enormous carved smiling faces.
Much of the Angkor site has been restored, but the Ta Prohm temple has deliberately been left with its jungle covering; you get a real sense of what the French explorers would have seen when they rediscovered the site in the 1870s. If you do not have more time, this is a great intro to both Vietnam and Cambodia. Well organised, varied – in spite of limited time, we felt, we’ve seen a lot. The activity level was low as described, the pace was a bit more than expected, requiring early rises on many occasions, but this enabled us to see as much as possible, which we wanted and appreciated. Accomodation was of a slightly lower standard than expected (by reading travel notes), but overall it was OK. Plus if this is your first time in the country, it is hard to know what the norm is.
