- The Silk Road – Extension to Khiva
Add a stay in Khiva to your journey along The Silk Road.
Following the end of The Silk Road tour, this extension sees you stay an extra night in Bukhara, giving time to relax and explore this very walkable city further before travelling by train across the Kyzylkum Desert to Khiva, the most remote of Uzbekistan's major Silk Road cities. Essential Info
Visa
Uzbekistan
Travellers from the UK and EU normally do not need a visa to enter Uzbekistan; however, US citizens normally do. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.
Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.
- Australia: www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/asia/uzbekistan
- Canada: www.travel.gc.ca/destinations/uzbekistan
- United Kingdom: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/uzbekistan/entry-requirements
- USA: www.travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Uzbekistan.html
For a full list of nationalities eligible for a visa-free visit of up to 30 days, please see: www.uzbekembassy.com.my/eng/consular_services/visa_information/
Many other nationalities are eligible for a simplified visa in advance, including the USA. Should you need an authorisation letter for your application, please contact Exodus at least eight weeks before departure as we can arrange this for you through our local operator.
Please note, it is no longer necessary for you to complete a currency declaration form upon arrival (unless you are carrying more than US$2,000 with you). However, you should keep your receipts given by each hotel that you stay in – please hold on to these as they may be checked when you leave.
There have also been greater restrictions on bringing medicine into Uzbekistan. If you have any special medicine, we recommend you check with your local Uzbekistan embassy about allowed quantities. You should also bring copies of your prescriptions and declare them upon arrival.
Vaccination
Uzbekistan
There are no required vaccinations. However, you may want to consider vaccinations for tetanus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, rabies, tuberculosis and typhoid. Please confirm with your doctor or travel clinic.
Eating and Drinking
2 breakfasts (due to early departure on the last day, breakfast is not included this day)
Weather
This area of Central Asia has extremely hot summers. On July and August departures temperatures often reach 35ºC, sometimes higher. Sunny weather with clear blue skies is the norm.
Is this trip for you?
This is a generally undemanding extension. However, not that it is not accompanied by a tour leader, so you need to be happy exploring Bukhara on your own for a day, and being unaccompanied on the train from Bukhara to Khiva. A local guide in Khiva is included for a tour of the city. Transfers to/from the train stations, and a departure transfer to Urgench airport are also included.
Following a review of all our trips we have categorised this trip as generally not suitable for persons of reduced mobility. However if you are a regular traveller on such trips, please contact customer services to discuss the trip and your personal condition.

This extension uses comfortable hotels for all three nights.
