Just about as much fun as you can have on a bike :)

This was my first Exodus trip, so I’ll start by saying I’m very impressed with the organisation and customer support leading up to it. The trip itself was so much fun from start to finish. Maybe I lucked out, but the other 9 on the trip were a great bunch and we all got on really well throughout. The cycling itself started with a real bang with a 3 mile rocky (and a bit technical in places) descent that put a grin on my face that never left all week (well, maybe on some of the ascents it did wane a little…). I’d say it was about 50% descent, 20% “moroccan flat” and 30% ascent, so you do need to put some work in, and I confess that I took advantage of the support vehicle for 2 of the really long ascents. The views are stunning throughout and the Anti Atlas section (which was the majority) was pretty awe inspiring. We were over-fed throughout with snack and lunch stops, so never ran out of fuel or water, and any mechanicals were dealt with quickly and expertly by the support crew. The hotels were all comfortable and I particularly liked the end of the day ‘beer on the balcony’ moments in Tafroute watching the sun set over the mountains, and the meal in Immouzer was incredible.. The bikes were Cannondale 29ers and rolled well over everything – rocks, riverbeds, gritty pistes and tarmac. Some of the switchback descents went on forever (if I go to heaven….), and the final day run down to the sea (with a refreshing dip) was a fitting finale to an amazing week of riding.

Most Inspirational Moment

The varied landscapes of the Anti-Atlas, particularly around Tafroute, will stay with me forever - in fact I'm already plotting a return!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Abde and Hassan led the trip superbly. Special thanks to Hassan who patiently waited for me bringing up the rear on the uphill sections! The support crew were great too, particularly Hammou who fed us all so well!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

It's a very physical ride throughout with a lot of uphill, so get as fit as you can before you go! (I wish I had..). And don't take scottish banknotes to change into Dirhams - you might as well have monopoly money in Morocco!

Fast Paced Adventure

To repeat other reviews – action packed trip – more emphasis on cycling and not on sight-seeing like some other Exodus tours on offer. The distances, pace and elevations are rated moderate, but to some they would be challenging. The pace was faster than we normally go when touring – although there were frequent stops. Excellent organization and leadership from Lam and his team who refreshed us at regular intervals and kept our bikes in good shape. Their support couldn’t have been better or more cheerful. Loved some of the quieter roads and villages but could have missed cycling through the city areas like Hue – unnecessarilly risky, in my view. High quality hotels all the way and some great meals. Not enough time to really see some overnight places like Da Lat. Overnight train trip an adventure but not for the faint of heart (toilets) or light sleepers. Great overnight boat experience in Halong Bay. We certainly saw the country from one end to the other.

Most Inspirational Moment

Beautiful scenery and the waving children along the way.

Thoughts on Group Leader

5 stars! Excellent group leader (Lam) who seemed to have every last detail sorted out way ahead of time from room allocation/ keys, to restaurants, to luggage, tipping, tickets etc. Also, he was extremely knowledgeable about the country. He helped all the slower members of our group along the way and encouraged everyone.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware of the cycling demands and the risks in a country with crazy traffic and roads (pot holes/ animals/ scooters). A few more people in our group might have enjoyed the tour more with an ebike. Expect long bus rides between cycling (up to 4 hours) so be prepared with something to read etc. Take toilet supplies especially for the train and rest stops - some with very basic facilities. (the bush was often the only option along the way). Some of our bike sizes were not what we expected. Make sure to let the company know not just your height but what size bike you generally ride to avoid this hassle.Easier to start with the right ize than have them adjusting along the way. There is no day pack or pannier with the bikes for even the smallest items. Bring something along. The bus is never too far away.

First exodus trip

First group trip on some years. Superb experience and packed so much in. Saw big 5, gear locations, food and like minded company

Most Inspirational Moment

The elephant encounter on game drive. A on heat bull in a rampant mood was so impressive. The guides got us in the best places.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both the guides Clifford and Evans had a few challenges with a client going down with heat stroke and then heavy rain. On a different day I might add. It’s when you see the professionalism of people at times like this, they were and handled it very well

Advice for Potential Travellers

Clients need to be fit, not really fit, just hill walking fit. Also some headphones and podcasts for the driving times. Also prepared for a lack of WiFi!

A Thoroughly Enjoyable Tour Of This Majestic Island

A thoroughly enjoyable tour of this majestic island. Our first day out took us to some of the tourist hotspots – the huge Gullfoss waterfall, geysers, the growing fault line between the North American and Eurasian continental plates and the site of their 1100-year-old parliament. Thereafter our 1000-mile journey around the island was largely free of other tourists (it was February). The snow conditions were good (it covered the island, but wasn’t too deep for walking), with little rain (probably lucky for the time of year). Our only challenge was the wind, which did curtail our itinerary when we got to the west of the island.

Most Inspirational Moment

Many. The views as we travelled around this snow-covered isle were magnificent. As the road wound its way along the south coast, mountains were on one side and the sea with its black sand beaches on the other. The lightening at the Valley of Thor was just on-cue. Next the road wound round the eastern fjords, with the sun-lit sky gleaming off the snow-white mountains and deep blue water. Then it was through our first tunnel to Egilsstadir and, that night, our first and best view of the Northern Lights. The next day we journeyed across the plateau to Lake Myvatn, with its complete range of geological wonders – mudpots, steaming vents, lava towers, volcanic craters, psedo-craters and a thermal swimming pool.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jon was an excellent group leader, as well as being the driver of our minibus. He always had a story to tell and alternative sites to visit when necessary. His restaurant recommendations were always excellent (I was very impressed by the quality of food at all our stops). Jon regularly monitored the weather and Northern Lights conditions, so that we missed the worst weather and got to see the Lights. He kept us safe when we ventured out, ensuring we wore the chains provided on our boots. And being February, all vehicles had studded tyres, making driving safe on snow covered roads

Advice for Potential Travellers

Dress for the weather you may incur, with lots of layers in winter. Waterproof over trousers and jacket are essential in February, as are a sturdy pair of walking boots. The chains provided are excellent, they have a rubber surround that fits them to your boots. A couple of the people brough anti-slip grips which proved to be inadequate. The day length obviously varies depending on when you go. Sunrise was nearly 10am in early February. The weather and temperature is also very variable. Check these out before deciding when to go. You might also want to check out the midge situation, if you don’t want to be bitten. Going in February did provide the possibility to see the Northern Lights and we were lucky. The Northern Lights are dependent on the solar activity, a cloudless sky and little light pollution from local lighting or the moon. For photographs, you need long exposure (15 seconds on my camera), which needs a tripod or something similar. Check your requirements before you go. The best photos on our trip were taken by someone with an iPhone. Also get a water cover for your camera, others have reported their cameras being damaged by the rain or spray from the waterfalls. A Pro camera, as used by cyclist or cars, may be an alternative if fitted with a waterproof container.

Simply amazing trip in beautiful Sri Lamka

Very hard to find anything to fault in this action packed, well organised cycling tour of Sri Lanka. Suresh and his team were amazing. We honestly couldn’t have been looked after better, with every meal more incredible than the last and some fabulous hotels on the itinerary. A great mix with some challenging cycling, sightseeing, tea plantations and the Indian Ocean. Plus more than a few mojitos.

Most Inspirational Moment

Some of the scenery was beautiful and coupled with some real cycling challenges, it was memorable in many ways. As a vegetarian the food was among the best experiences I’ve ever had - loved it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh was simply outstanding, as were the rest of the crew. Everything was impeccably organised, and although we must have been hard work at times, we were made to feel very special. No notes!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just go. Sri Lanka is stunning, felt very safe and has so much to offer. People were lovely, such a friendly place. We were barely bothered by mosquitoes although always be prepared, but not much else to add - if you need anything you can get it while you’re there. Although if you need them gals, bring tampons!

Comprehensive View of Jordan

A lot of ground is covered, Day 1 was long with a lot of sites – several of which I didn’t find that exciting but it got much better after that. The Jerash hotel is poor but it is only one night and apparently there are no alternatives. Jerash Roman city is amazing. And if Jerash was good Petra is staggering and the site is huge – I had no idea! It’s about 1.5 miles walk from hotel to the famous Treasury and that’s only the start. I have worked out that we walked around 8 miles on day 1 at Petra and about 9 on day 2. The walk to the monastery at Petra is quite long but worth it – I am 70 and with moderate fitness. There are buggies and even horses and donkeys available. At Aqaba there is nice healthy coral with plenty of fish straight off the sandy beach. You can hire mask & fins for 10JD or just a mask for 7JD.

Most Inspirational Moment

Undoubtedly the time spent at Petra.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nidal was excellent. very good English. If I was to be super-critical he tended to overload us with information at times and I could see some of the group switching off.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You cover a lot of territory so inevitably there is much time spent travelling on the bus. Lunches were generally from take away street establishments often eaten on the hoof or in the bus but sometimes sitting. We became very familiar wit the falafel sandwich! And lunches were very cheap too, often spending well under £1 per person. Weatherwise - we were there in February, be prepared for some cold evenings and mornings except for the Dea Sea and Aqaba although the sea was quite chilly at both places. At one restaurant my fleece jacket was kept tightly zipped up all evening!

Great overview

This was an amazing trip to see the highlights of new Zealand. It is full on with long driving days staying in a different hotel every 1-2 days. The walks are mostly short but there a few days of longer walks but these are optional (just don’t miss Hooker valley ) Unfortunately due to the weather we weren’t able to do Tongariro alpine crossing but instead walked to waterfall and lakes which was great

Most Inspirational Moment

It’s hard to choose but I think I would refine to 3: seeing a purple sunrise in Milford sound, hand gliding in Queenstown and the Hooker valley walk- but I don’t want to spoil your surprise.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had 2. Our first guide Duli, covered the North island. He was a great driver but left to feel self- guided at stops. A few of us wrote to exodus and we promptly had a change of guide. Peter was great, improving our experience. He appeared to know the South Island in great depth, choosing interesting stops en route. Whilst also not a hiker, he joined in with the group including for walks and appeared to enjoy himself.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don’t overpack! You really do not need shampoo/ conditioner (or maybe just a tiny bottle) as available in most the hotels. Laundry facilities (water/ dryer) are available in several of the hotels but limited by time to use them if you arrive late/ leave early. 5 days worth of clothing would be adequate including waterproofs! There are a number of very long drive days of 4-5 hours but this is interspersed with stops at interesting sites / beautiful scenery so really doesn’t feel arduous (except for driver)

Highlights of Japan

Great holiday. Great guide.
Most Inspirational Moment

Variety of sites. Food. Weather. Golden temple. Kyoto. Tokyo

Thoughts on Group Leader

A pleasure to be with.

An excellent holiday that exceeded expectations

A brilliant holiday, I can’t think of anything that could have been improved. The guide Biju was perfect, he had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the area, and nothing was too much trouble. The balance between organised excursions and free time was ideal in our case with plenty of time for wandering around, or ferreting out restaurants and hidden bars. The optional excursions were explained clearly and those we selected, which was most of them, perfectly matched or exceeded expectations. The whole holiday, South India, Biju and Exodus thoroughly exceeded my expectations.

Most Inspirational Moment

It is very hard to identify one moment of the trip, when the programme was so varied and interesting, I really enjoyed the whole experience. There were several moments that exceeded my expectations which include the early morning walk through Madurai watching the city wake up, I also really enjoyed the walks, one through the tea plantation into the hills, and the other through the Nature Reserve.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader Biju Kumar was amazing, I never saw him switch off for the full fortnight. He was consistently cheerful and helped above and beyond expectations. Biju had an encyclopaedic knowledge of South India, nothing was too much trouble, whenever a question was asked, he would follow the thread of the conversation explaining the intricacies and how the elements of Indian culture, history, faith, and even politics interweaved. At every stop he assisted the group with translation, advice, and guidance. Often he would pop up assisting the vendor or the waiting staff taking orders and helping make sure that all the group members were looked after. One of the members of the group feel over and cracked her shoulder bone, Biju insisted (correctly) that she visited the doctor to check it out, and escorted her to the hospital for an X-Ray, managed to ensure she picked up the medication that was prescribed and managed to get back to the group in time to lead the group through the optional tour of the Tea Museum. He also provided great local knowledge when I asked advice on the use of our spare time. I also think that the model of the Exodus tour of having a core set of events supported by optional excursions was exactly what was required, this allowed a reasonable basic cost without limiting people who wanted to see a bit more. Biju gave very clear descriptions of the optional trips without appearing to apply any pressure to sign up, and I have to say I did go on the majority of the optional trips, and thoroughly enjoyed them too. I would also like to give a mention to the driver Vinod, although not an Exodus employee he was also relentlessly cheerful and drove with great skill, many of the roads would be A and B standard, with very challenging other road users, some roads into the mountains were pretty hairy. He was always a welcoming face when we reached the minibus, which even at 6’3” was perfectly comfortable. I have not been on holiday with Exodus before, but many of the group had, and it appears that Biju was significantly above average, he excelled and significantly exceeded my expectations. I have already started looking through the brochure for another exodus tour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take cash and change a bit at the airport on arrival, changing money was not as easy in typical European countries, the ATM machines were a bit hit and miss, with many running out of cash and limiting the amount you could withdraw. Treasure low denomination notes, the most frequent note given by exchanges and ATMs is the 500 rupee note, this is equivalent to £5.00, however, this can be like spending a £50 note sometimes as nearly everything we bought was less than 200 rupees. Food and drink is very cheap in India in comparison to the UK. No need to take hiking boots, I decided, based on luggage space, only to take trainers, and there were absolutely fine for the walks on the trip. If you are female, best to take a toilet roll with you, and pop one in your knapsack whilst on the trips. If you fancy the odd beer or glass of wine, be aware that in South India there is less access to alcohol, there are bars but they tend to be quite hidden away without windows. This actually proved to be quite a fun part of the holiday, ferreting out some very dodgy bars. There are off licence’s but be prepared to queue. I took a couple of bottles from the UK which was a good move. Local wine is variable, there were some good bottles but also some not so good. Take some coffee from home, the local coffee has a percentage of chickery, and in the opinion of most of the group, does not taste particularly good. Being plant based I found the food brilliant, although we only found one waiter who had heard of vegan, the majority understood very quickly the concept of no eggs, yoghurt, or milk, and still on many buffet’s we had an adequate choice of dishes. They use a lot of coconut milk in Kerala, you will see why when you arrive. The food becomes less spicy as you travel south, possibly because it becomes more geared to western tourists, I liked it spicy.

Trip of a Lifetime

This was the most amazing experience, enhanced by the enthusiasm and knowledge of our tour guide, David Vargas. We pretty well covered all areas of Costa Rica seeing diverse environments and experiencing different climates. David is an ornithologist and did his utmost to inspire the group with his love of birds and his country. His extensive knowledge of the history of his country and of its flora and fauna enhanced the experience. He always went the extra mile to ensure our comfort and to consider the needs of the group. We would have no hesitation in recommending this trip to anyone who has an interest in the extraordinary amount of wildlife that is there for all to

Most Inspirational Moment

The time we spent in Tortuguero due to the attractiveness of the eco lodge and huge variety of wildlife. There were so many great experiences but another to stand out was the time spent in the south at Piedras Blancas Esquinas when we did a night walk in the rain forest with boots and torches - a first! And another beautiful eco lodge…

Thoughts on Group Leader

See general review. He was inspirational and much appreciated by the whole group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

People considering this holiday would be advised to bring stout footwear due to the challenge of uneven and muddy ground in the forests. We wished we had taken a travel kettle as there are only coffee makers in the rooms. Most hotels and lodges have hot showers but no hot water in the hand basins. Also no plugs, so take your own. Also adaptors of course.
