CYCLING VIETNAM

An excellent way to see the sites, main cities and countryside of Vietnam.  This is a comprehensive trip that includes most of the main cultural centres of the country.  Cycling is a great way to get off the regular tourist trail and to see how the Vietmamese people live and work.

Most Inspirational Moment

For me, visiting a Third World country is best accommplished on a bicycle.  However, well meaning you are, if you use a vehicle you will always appear as a 'tourist'.  When you ride into a village or town, dusty and dirty on a bike you are approachable and friendly.  The local people may think you are nuts to ride a bike when you could use a vehicle but you are definitely 'one of us' not 'one of them'.Seeing Vietnam on a mountain bike was a great joy.  I am old enough to remember the Vietnam War and back then I never thought for one moment that I would one day have the opportunity to visit the country and be welcomed by the people I met.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent.  A genuinely nice person.  'Bonded' with the Group very quickly and successfully.Very helpful, he did everything to make the holiday pleasant and totally successful.  Very well organised.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you want to go to Vietnam, go soon before the country develops.  Along the coast the first resorts and golf clubs are being build.  I have the feeling that in a few years Vietnam will have changed its character and probably not for the better. Vietnamese drivers retain the old French road customs and expect you to give way to the right; that is correct, I haven't mixed up my directions.  Motor bikes and cars drivers emerge from side roads without looking left and are surprised if those on the main road are not overly pleased.

EVEREST BASE CAMP

A brilliant, challenging and very rewarding trip, good for at appreciating the shear scale of the Himalayas.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing Everest from the top of a very cold and snowy Kala Patthar.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Really excellent. A great and experienced guide, really good company and a helped gel the team together.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring enough money. You will probably spend more than you think at the Tea Houses.Folow the advice of the guide and drink plenty of water.Keep going!

CYCLING CUBA

This was probably one of the most memorable trips for all the wrong reasons – however Exodus dealt with no less than 3 accidents on during the trip very well.

Most Inspirational Moment

The lodge in the mountains with the waterfall was wonderful - even in the rain!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Razel had a difficult time dealing with accidents, including his own, yet coped very well. He was big enough to apologise to the group when he said he made wrong decisions - however I beg to differ with his analysis that concentrating on the needs of an injured party member at the expense of the needs of the rest of the group was wrong!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Cycling is not a dangerous activity, but it does has its risks. Always concentrate when riding and ride within your limits.

PETRA & WADI RUM TREK

Hot but workable days, spectacular landscape, great group of folk to trek with. Good fun setting up camp, gathering wood, eating great food and chatting till weariness dragged us to our tents and sleeping bags.

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra has to be the most a inspiring end to any trek but the nights under the stars were unforgettable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader had a difficult job with an over excited group of widely different ages but managed brilliantly.

Advice for Potential Travellers

A good light pair of boots.

A TASTE OF CUBA

An absolutely fantastic trip to a wonderful country

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many to mention but I'll try:Old Havana - a picture can't give you the sounds and the atmosphere, fabulous old buildings - some almost in ruins and some renovatedVinales - beautifulRiding in the classic cars

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mirta was an incredible group leader, kept us all in check (mostly).  Nothing was too much trouble for her, everything well organised.

Advice for Potential Travellers

At the first opportunity to change money get more than you think you will need as after Havana there aren't many other opportunities.  Also, take pens etc for the school children at the schools visited. Put any preconceived ideas you may have about Cuba to one side and just live in the moment and have fun! How to walk safely on the cobbled streets of Trinidad - 2 mojitos, 2 cuba libres and a pina colada.  You may still trip but you really won't care.

CARPATHIAN CULTURE AND WILDLIFE

An interesting trip in a beautiful area of natural beauty.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing wild bears in the woods at dusk. The trip to Libearty was very moving. Also enjoyed Bran Castle, even though the Dracula merchandising on sale outside was a bit tacky!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Cosmin was a quiet, unassuming leader who emerged as a real asset to the trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We travelled in August and it was extremely hot (apparently a heatwave), a bit too hot for some of the fairly strenuous hiking early in the trip. So maybe avoid the summer months. We saw very little 'incidental' wildlife - I had expected to see more birds of prey, for instance.

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - LEMOSHO ROUTE

An excellent, well-organised trip. Every member of the team, from the chief guide to the porters were hardworking and professional and ensured that we all had a trip that none of us will ever forget.

Most Inspirational Moment

The porters were incredible. Seeing how hard they worked every day inspired us to keep pushing on. And as a group we worked together to ensure that we all made it to the summit. We couldn't have done it without our 3 excellent guides, Henry, Venance and Wilfred who pushed us every step of the way, especially on summit day when the going got really tough. We also got on really well as a group and we each had our own personal reasons for wanting to make it to the top.Finding out that we'd receive a certificate if we reached the top was an additional incentive!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Henry, our group leader, was the ultimate professional. He was polite and professional and knew exactly how much information to give us each day. He had clearly led trips up Kili on numerous occasions and knew exactly what he was doing. As a group we were also impressed with the way he treated the porters - all were treated fairly and he personally ensured that no porter was carrying too much weight. He took all of our safety seriously, both the clients and the porters and other members of his team. His knowledge of the area was phenomenal and together with the other 2 guides they worked as a team to ensure the trip ran as smoothly as possible.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you spend time looking at what route you'd liked to do. I chose the Lemosho route as I wanted to give myself the best possible chance of reaching the top. I chose Exodus following a presentation evening I attended in January 2012 where Exodus staff talked through the pros and cons of each route. I realised that the reason I had procrastinated in booking for so long was because I was baffled by which route to take. Attending the evening gave me a really good oversight as to which was the best route for me. I then called Exodus with some questions and they were able to answer them in a professional way. It is definitely worth taking the time to choose your route carefully. And if you buy new kit for the trip make sure you break it in first!

WALKING THE AMALFI COAST

Another most enjoyable trip with Exodus. The hotel was lovely, good vegetarian options. Unfortunate flight times, but that’s incidental really.

Most Inspirational Moment

I think it was the Walk of the Gods. When we went it was interestingly atmospheric, with low cloud then opening out into beautiful blue skies and sparkling sea. I also really enjoyed the trip to Pompeii; so much to see there.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very competent, informed and approchable. Changed itinerary to suit weather and suggested alternatives when we were prevented to follow usual activities. Also provided snacks and suggested good places for coffee, etc.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you are interested in the Romans go to Herculaneum as well as Pompeii, if you can. I thought it was a wonderful experience and the size of the site is more manageable.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

This was a well balanced holiday, with sufficient time to relax amidst enjoying almost all of the major sites of Jordan.  I would describe Jordan as a welcoming and friendly country, with a fantastic climate and wealth of fascinating history: social, political and archaeological.

Most Inspirational Moment

I think that seeing Petra unfold before me at dawn, before the throng of tourists arrived, was probably the most breathtaking moment, but experiencing some of the Holy Lands was similarly inspiring for me, and Wadi Rum was an experience not to be missed.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was full of energy and worked hard to ensure we had a thoroughly enjoyable trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go to Petra early in the morning on one of the days you stay there, and steer clear of the salad bar.  If you can fit it into your schedule, take an excursion to the baptism site on the River Jordan.

CHOPSTICKS & COCONUTS - FAMILY HOLIDAY

A great introduction to a wonderful country, the Vietnamese people are a delight, the food is great and the scenery varied and beautiful from the full-on buzz of Hanoi and Saigon to the peace and tranquility of Halong Bay and the Mekong Delta

Most Inspirational Moment

Cruising amongst the Karst peaks in Halong Bay was amazing but the revelation for me was the Vietnamese people, so friendly and with an extrordinary capacity for forgiveness towards their former enemies.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Zung was great, so enthusiastic, always smiling with a great sense of humour and particularly good with the teenagers.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The food is great so don't worry about taking fussy children, you are bound to find something they will like. The War museum in Ho Chi Minh city contains some deeply shocking photos and accounts of atrocities - I would say it is essential that adults visit but it is tough and not suitable for younger children
