CUBAN HIGHLIGHTS RIDE

Excellent and well organised trip. Perfect way to see various parts of Cuba in a short space of time.

Most Inspirational Moment

The last days cycle to Hanabanillia was particularly good, however the whole country is intoxicating. Trinidad is a beautiful town providing ample opportunity to practice your salsa moves after the days cycle. I highly recommend the 'cave disco' after a few mojitos.

Thoughts on Group Leader

José was a supportive and informative leader. He entertained us with Cuban history and the odd joke between transfers. Get him to tell you the canary one, it still makes me giggle.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The bikes are well maintained but I'd recommend a pair of cycling shorts or a gel seat and camelback for hydration. Both will make the undulations more enjoyable.

LAND OF THE TIGER

Beautiful game parks, fantastic wildlife, good accommodation. Altogether a great experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

Finally seeing tigers on our 18th (and final!) game drive!  They are truly amazing creatures and we were privileged to see 4 on our final drive, two of which we saw really close up and for quite a while.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Harish Kumar is exceptionally knowledgeable about India and its wildlife, especialy the beautiful birds.  He could not have worked harder to nip any health issues in the bud whenever anyone in the group was under the weather and to ensure we had the best opportunities to see the wonderful wildlife, including tigers.  He felt personally responsible that, until our fianl drive, we had not had a decent sighting of a tiger and this was obviously a great concern for him.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Tigers are wild creatures and do not appear just because you will them to!  Current Indian goivernment policy has reduced the opportunities for seeing tigers so now is the time to go before their numbers dwindle even further as a result of poaching. Having said that, be prepared to just enjoy the beauty of the parks and the other wonderful wildlife in case you are unlucky in your tiger quest.  There's plenty else to enjoy.Make sure you have your binoculars handy at all times and don't let your camera battery or memory run out!Ear plugs for the overnight train may be useful We had a chronic snorer as a neighbour - he got a good night's sleep but nobody else in the vicinity did!

EVEREST BASE CAMP

With out doubt, the most memorable trip of my life. It was hard, probably harder than I expected, but I’ve come home with a massive sense of achievement, and the most amazing views imaginable engraved in my mind! The photos just don’t to it justice.

Most Inspirational Moment

Just being in the Himalayas is inspirational!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was Jaite (Ajay) Tamang and I can't praise him enough. We all felt in very safe hands. He was always aware of our health, asking us every morning if we had headaches etc. He constantly gave us advice on what was best to eat for energy/altitude and he constantly reminded us to drink lots and lots and to keep warm. But not only was he an excellent leader, he was also an excellent ambassador for his country. His enthusiasm for it was catching. He pointed out flowers, animals, mountain names and gave us a brilliant insight into true Nepali life. It was obvious he was proud of his country and we felt proud to be there. Our other guides, Lakpa Sherpa and Suresh Tamang were equally as wonderful. They carried our bags when we were ill, always had a smile for us, and basically were at our beck and call. They were happy to do anything for us without the slightest grumble. I don't think there was a lazy bone in their bodies. They worked so hard, but seemed so happy and proud to be doing the job they were doing. It was a pleasure to be with them. Our Yak man, Phura Sarki Sherpa had healthy looking animals and our bags always arrived outside our rooms without any problems or fuss.

Advice for Potential Travellers

1: We went in the trip in mid April so I can only account for the weather in this month, but you have to be prepared for ALL weather! We started in boiling heat for the first 3 days. I really burnt my arms, so make sure you have high factor sun cream and use it! We also encountered snow, wind, freezing cold and torrential rain. Layers are without doubt the way forward. Lots of them! 2: I took a small bottle of febreeze and this was really nice to freshen up things that were starting to get a bit smelly! We didn't shower the whole 11 day trek, so clothes do get very dirty. Everyone's in the same boat though, so it's not so bad. I looked like a yeti when I got back, but it all added to the sense of adventure. 3: Make sure you have a couple of toilet rolls. There are none in the loos. However they can be bought in all the lodges, right the way up. Ladies, (sorry men) take panyliners, they are very useful. I read this tip from another review and was grateful I did. You'll understand once you're there! 4:We definitely did NOT need £25-£35 a day. I suppose it depends on the individual though. I took my own snacks for trekking (sweets, cereal bars, Kendal mint cake) so didn't need to buy anything like that and I didn't bother with wifi. I charged my phone/camera 2 or 3 times (about £2 an hour) Meals on average cost about £4 (more for meat dishes, less for soup) Hot drinks were about 50p. 5: I didn't expect the altitude to hit me as much as it did. It's really hard to explain the feeling, but be prepared to feel at least a bit 'weird' particularly from Dingboche upwards. I'm reasonably fit, and was determined to get there and I did, but it was by no means a walk in the park. Mental determination is almost as important as physical ability. If you're fit and determined and you don't get too ill, you'll make it. The trek starts off quite pleasantly, but definitely gets harder and the days get longer the nearer to EBC you get. 6: I had a little 'bum bag' type thing which had my camera, snacks and tissues in, and the others in the group all said what a good idea they thought it was. It meant I could take photos without having to stop or ask someone to help get it out of my rucksack and access sweets at any point! It really was useful. 7: A few if us had a platypus/camelback and again, I would really recommend it. You have to drink a lot to help prevent altitude problems and it was nice to be able to access water without having to ask someone to pass my bottle to me. But a cap for the mouthpiece is a good idea as every time I put my bag down, the mouthpiece got dirty. 8: We got boiled water at night in a metal water bottle, used it as a hot water bottle, then it was ready to drink the next morning. It was so nice having that extra warmth when we went to bed! It is FREEZING at night. 9: I was a bit worried about loos. In the first few days of the trek you stop every couple of hours at a lodge for tea/lunch, so there is opportunity then. Later on, when lodges are less frequent, there are rocks and bushes! In some ways this is more pleasant than actual toilets. Just ask your guide and they'll point you to a good 'wee wee' rock (as our guide always put it!) 10: At the end of our trek, we were asked by our leader to not throw away anything. Any old clothes we were thinking of throwing away/sweets/toiletries/shoes etc we didn't want were divided up in front of us and given to our 3 other guides. They were grateful of our old things and had I known, I might've taken some other old things to donate. 11: Make sure you inform your bank if you are thinking of taking out money from a cash machine in Kathmandu! I didn't and they blocked my card. Was a nightmare trying to get through to them and sort it. Probably best to take cash and exchange it at either the airport in Kathmandu or at a money exchange in Katmandu. £300 was plenty for us.

FINNISH WILDERNESS WEEK

Great week in the finish wilderness with so much snow. Eventhough we stayed at the same place for one week, there was no boredom: every day we did new activities and got to know the area from a different perspective! Perfect winterholiday, would recommend it to everyone.

Most Inspirational Moment

During the day of husky-sledding, warming up on a fire in the forest while it was snowing.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Teddy was amazing! Great ambassador for Finnland and Exodus.

ICELAND NORTHERN LIGHTS

This was probably one of the best holidays that i have been on and a great taster for seeing what Iceland has to offer.

Most Inspirational Moment

Where do i begin? There were so many. Iceland is a fantastic place - stunning views of snow covered volcanoes; black sand beaches covered with 'diamonds' of  ice decorating the shore and waves crashing in over the Icebergs in the sea; lichen covered fields of lava that seem to go on forever; waterfalls that take your breath away; a truly stunning iceberg lagoon that i could have spent the whole day watching and a walk on a glacier - something i never thought i would experience.Of course the one big reason for going is to see the Northern Lights and i wasn't disappointed. To see them dancing across the sky is a view i will never forget - even if my own photos of the event didn't turn out too well.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Petur was brilliant and really made us all feel so welcome to a country that he obviously loves. His ' No Stress Bus' was well stocked with great snacks to keep us going on our trip in the south of the island. He helped make the trip so special.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take plenty of warm clothing and layer up to keep the chill out. Iceland can have all seasons in an hour let alone a day so be prepared. You'll need warm gloves for Northern Light watching unless you have ones that you can use your camera with. A good hat that will cover your ears is also very useful.I took both good walking boots for the day and insulated snow boots for the evening when you are standing around and not generating too much heat. One thing i would recommend is if you are a photographer make sure you know exactly how to set up your camera for taking photos at night. There are some good YouTube videos that might help. It's an experience that you won't want to miss and being prepared will make sure you see the lights with your own eyes and not just through the lense of a camera all the time.

HIGHLIGHTS OF MOROCCO

Having been an independant traveller I had a number of preconceived notions and ideas about group travel and wasn’t sure about how I would feel about being on an organzied group trip.  Howeer, this trip not only met but exceeded my expectations and I enjoyed nearly every moment.  I would not hesitate to take another organzied trip through Exodus.

Most Inspirational Moment

I had a number of inspirational moments but I would like to mention the overall warmth and sense of humour of the people and how I always felt welcomed.  I particulary enjoyed the walk to and stay in Kasbah Oliver.  Being able to participate in their community program was very rewarding and the information provided by Mustapha about village life was greatly appreciated.  Of course, the camel trek throught the dessert in a sandstorm was highly memorable as well.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mustapha is a highly knowledgable and professional leader.  Without hesitation he was able to accommodate the group and their needs.  His choice in local guides was also superior and they too added significantly to the overall experience.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The temperature was a bit cooler than what I expected, so bring layers.  I did manage with only a sleeping bag liner as blankets were provided.  To avoid disappointment or discomfort if you have special dietary needs, you may want to consider taking your own supply of food.  Although Mustapha worked hard to ensure everyone's dietary needs were taken care of, I am sure that in remote areas this, by no means, was easy.   Thank you Mustapha for going that extra mile! The choice of restaurants were at a higher cost that what I expected, so when budgeting, take into consideration that although you are staying in basic accommodation, you may not be eating in basic restaurants.

SIERRA DE AITANA TREK

Ideal for a winter break, peaceful and interesting mountain trails in the sun a few miles from the Spanish coast.

Most Inspirational Moment

Great views across the Sierra to the coast.Wonderful Spanish home cooking at Benimantell.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Good fun, very knowledgable and clearly a local celebrity.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It might just about be a B/C grade, but it's pretty close to a C; there are a couple of longer days, there's the odd short scrambly bit and sometimes because the area is so rarely walked the trail is a bit rough. The trip notes describe the walks very accurately, so read those rather than just go by the grade. This is all good, but it's best to know what to expect. April and May departures are likely to be pretty warm, although there was always a breeze up on the ridges.

THE INCA TRAIL

well organised trip with excellent porterage with quality leadership from Fabrizio and Roberto.
A well paced walk taking in breath taking scenery with the flora and fauna being regularly highlighted by the knowledgeable Roberto.

Most Inspirational Moment

arriving at the Sun gate taking in our first view of the Macchu Pichu site. The leaders well prepared us for this and ensured we arrived in good time to enjoy the mid afternoon sunny clear panoramic views . The third night's campsite will be remembered for ever as the constantly changing views due to the clouds movements were spectacular .

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent as he had everyone's wants at heart, particularly the lost luggage on the day of arrival at Cusco? He was also very concerned at Our miss management of our supposedly booked extra days in Cusco.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I never use walking sticks but my advice would be to take them as the ascents can be long and steep, so to the descents however, the scenery is breathtaking. In Cusco take the open top bus tour as it really takes you on a grand tour of the centre and the Christ statue , the views are stunning.

DARJEELING, SIKKIM & THE SINGALILA RIDGE

There is something very special about the Himalayas and this trip offers two very different cultural experiences. However, if long journeys and monastaries are not your thing then it may not be the trip for you. The days are long and the itenarary busy there is not much free time for exploring places and markets.

Most Inspirational Moment

It has to be the scenery;  because you travel slowly and for such long distances you really can immerse yourself in the beauty of it all.  The evening chants at the monestary in Kalimpong was fantasic don't miss it. The guest house in Gangtok was charming. Darjeeling and Gangtok were bustling. lively towns with a great atmosphereHot stone bath in Bhutan and the wild spring flowers

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our Indian guide was absolutely fantastic, he was really good fun, highly experienced and incredibly good at bringing the group together. Lovely person we could not have wished for anyone better. The Bhutanese guide was more formal and quieter, he had a gentle manner and was very pleasant.

Advice for Potential Travellers

pack for cold weather some of the nights were really cold       don't take travellers cheques and pack lots of warm layers you will need them especially at night.

JOHANNESBURG TO CAPE TOWN

Had a great time , pity there were only 6 of us on the trip. South Africa is a great country and this trip gives you a great view of it.There were a few hiccups on the way like when the truck got a puncture and no one could get the wheel nuts off, guy had to come and burn them off for us . But, that’s travel.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking around the Drakensbergs .  And finally getting that last wheel nut off !!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rob was a good leader, did everything for us, drove, put up the tents and cooked.  Never seen a harder working leader. Rob loved his birdlife and not just the feathered varity. There was this Polish girl who wore the shortest of shorts and tightest of tops. It was funny listening for them to go from room to room & tent to tent. But, he spent most of his time with her and didn't give us his full attention.Tsepo was a great driver and a nice bloke.  Had a lot of fun with him.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Spend more time after the trip in Cape Town.
