MOUNTAINS & VILLAGES OF CORSICA

A good week of walking in a mountain landscape using the scenic mountain railway to access most walks.

Most Inspirational Moment

The view from my hotel window and from the train windows.Walking in the mountains and river gorges and cooling off at the end of the day with a local beer flavoured with chestnut flowers in the Bar des Amis .

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rudi was an excellent, considerate and thoughtful leader with an impish sense of humour. He allowed those of greater ability to walk on ahead  to a meeting point at their own pace  and most walks provided a shorter circuit for those who felt it necessary. We seemed to stumble across a bar most days and he even had the keys of an old shepherd's hut where we could brew up.  On one walk he had gone there earlier and hidden cans of drink for us in a cold mountain stream - - - a kind thought.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bocognano was ideally situated and by-passed by the main road traffic. There were a couple of restaurants, a small shop, the Bar des Amis and a good artisan bakery. Guessing when the shops/restaurants would open was a skill that would take more than a week to acquire.  The station was only a short walk from the hotel.    The hotel was as implied in the Trip Notes - - - a bit old and quirky but with friendly and helpful staff and a laid back cat. Much more fun than an impersonal modern one. Rudi's advice that Corte would not provide enough interest for a full day's visit was well founded. We all went to Ajaccio on the rest day. Our thanks to John, an ex French teacher who got our tickets !

CONTRASTS OF CATALUNYA CYCLING

A fantastic cycling holiday in the hidden Costa Brava, hardly any traffic or other people, with superb hotels and delicious meals.

Most Inspirational Moment

Despite not cycling much in the UK, we managed the distances easily, although I was sometimes defeated by the hills - the countryside is NOT 'pancake flat' as described on the website and my legs protested. However, it was a great feeling not to have to dismount all the time!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alan's route notes were very detailed so no chance of getting lost (although if you need reading glasses you will be stopping frequently to check them).  On the rest days, there were several route suggestions. He also very kindly came to pick us up earlier than scheduled, thus avoiding a wait of several hours at Flaca station.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for some hills! Despite the breeze, we were sweaty and red-faced when we arrived at the hotels (all of which were up a hill) but a quick shower and a swim restored us. You may wish to take gel saddles!

WALKING IN ALBANIA

Like the other nine people in my Exodus group I had only a vague preconceived image of what to expect in Albania ; possibly a rather drab, depressed society still struggling to free itself from the recent shackles of communism but with the compensatory prospect of some decent walking in a remote and little-known corner of Europe. The reality was almost overwhelming : the scenery (whether mountain or coastal) was stunning, towns and cities were bright and lively, clean, and seemingly safe; the depth of history and heritage was fascinating; and the locals were exceptionally friendly and welcoming wherever we went.

Most Inspirational Moment

The itinerary was so full it is impossible to single out just one highlight. They must range from the spectacular mountainous landscapes around Theth and Valbona National Park to the sheer scale and drama of Berat Castle or the humbling surroundings of Ardenica Monastery. However, perhaps the abiding memory is one of the pervading optimism that seems to exist, despite the relatively short time since the demise of the repressive communist regime. The towns are vibrant, colourful and lively places. People everywhere were polite, helpful and genuinely warm and friendly. The same was true of neighbouring Kosovo. The contrast between a village cemetary, where the majority of headstones depicted deaths on the same day as a result of a massacre during the 1990's conflict, and the flourishing cafe culture and general sense of wellbeing in Prizren was truly inspirational. Both countries have made remarkable progress since their recent troubles.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Dorien was exceptional. Intelligent (a qualified psychologist) with excellent English and a remarkable local and historical knowledge (with his father he is co-owner of the tourist company handling the trip on behalf of Exodus). The group developed a real rapport with him and greatly appreciated his efforts on our behalf. He was considering modifying some of the walking as his previous group had found it too difficult. However, we convinced him that we were capable and he even substituted a stiff 5 hour route for the easy leg-stretcher on day 2.While being in the forefront of current tourist development in Albania, he is also very much in favour of a responsible, sustainable approach to this and promoting local involvement as far as possible. He was keen to take on board any comments, suggestions or criticisms in this respect.

Advice for Potential Travellers

While this trip is a mixture of walking and sightseeing, some of the terrain in the north of the country over the first few days is quite demanding and hardly ' moderate ' (compared, for example, to the Transyvania or Rodopi walking). A good degree of fitness is essential and poles indispensible for some of the steep rocky trails.Having said that, the toughest days come early on and the second half of the week is rather more relaxing. Exodus trip photos don't really do justice to the scenery so find some other websites to get a better idea of what is on offer. If you are fit and are considering this Albania trip then go ! I guarantee that it will exceed all your expectations. But hurry - things are developing rapidly and it won't remain a hidden gem for much longer.Catch it while its traditions and naive beauty remain largely intact.

MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

We had a most amazing week, the walk was tough but thoroughly enjoyable and worth the effort.

Most Inspirational Moment

The summit climb is the obvious one, we were fortunate to have brilliant weather and were able to spend over an hour taking in the views and enjoying the photo opportunities, and a splendid snack provided by our guides. The camp on day 2 was also quite spectacular, the scenery from my sleeping bag was quite awesome. The gite was also great, simple but effective.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader was not the most attentive Exodus leader we have come across, but got us all to the top in one piece and down again. As it was Ramadan the energy levels of the guide and other staff were less than they might have otherwise been, full of admiration for what they achieved while fasting.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a nail brush! The dust gets every where and a nail brush was the only way of really getting hands clean. In Marrakech the guide wasn't really good value, might be better to do this yourself.

MONT BLANC CIRCUIT

A wonderfully challenging 2-week trek in the Alps. All my expectations were met and exceeded. We had blue skies, amazing views, snow capped mountains in all directions, glaciers, snow fields, wild flowers and a really great group made it a holiday to remember for a long time.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top of Tete Nord des Fours at 2756m having climbed a long snow field and seeing the wonderful 360 degree views and, at the end of the day, lying in my tent, wrapped in my down sleeping bag in a meadow of glorious wild flowers, at the head of a valley, under a glacier, by a river and with cow bells in the distance .. All my dreams come true! Also the dips in cold mountain rivers at the end of hot days.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I was pleased when I read that we were to have Graham as a leader as previous reviews of his leadership were glowing. He managed the group well but his job would have been easier if there had been a second leader to bring up the rear. He gave us the opportunities to stretch ourselves with extra peaks and further challenges on our 'rest' days and he took pains to explain each day in advance so we were well prepared and equipped for what lay ahead.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Everyone says it, but do get fit before you go. It makes the whole experience so much more rewarding! Ensure you have a memory card big enough to hold all those photos. Good, silicone ear plugs for some of the camp sites!

TOUR DU MONT BLANC

An excellent alpine walking holiday – lived up to all my expectations.  Fantastic scenery, wild flowers, characterful accomodation and excellently led.

Most Inspirational Moment

Being able to see so many alpine flowers in mid July - this was because the snow had stayed later this year - and having a leader who was as interested in identifyingand talking about wild flowers as I am!The baked apple stuffed with nuts and fruit, heated up in an aga at one of the refuges. Walking across snow bridges over glacial streams and seeing glaciers close up. Rupert's homemade dice game with the wooden dice he made - played on a pavement while waiting for the bus!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rupert was excellent in leading us all, excellent knowledge of alpine wild flowers, very relaxed approach, made sure everyone was OK in the group all of the timen.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Long walking days with over 1000 metres of ascent and descent most days are wonderful - but good to be reasonably fit before you come to get the most out of the trip.Think minimal when packing your rucsac - pack as little as you need - then rethink and pack less!Walking poles are really useful for both the descents and for crossing snow patches.Don't worry about the dormitory sleeping - its fun!

WALKING THE GREAT WALL

The ‘Walking The Great Wall’ trip was a fantastic experience, encompassing six days of trekking on different parts of the wall. It was physically challenging at times but it was a highly rewarding experience.

Most Inspirational Moment

Upon arrival, our group was given an informative half day tour of Beijing, which included the Forbidden Palace, Tiananmen Square and a public bus trip that was quite an experience. We also got to sample 'Peking Duck' at a local restaurant, and got a good nights sleep in a comfortable hotel. On the first day of the trek, our merry group of 12 walked on the Jiankou section of the Great Wall. This was an un-refurbished part of the wall, and was all the more beautiful for this fact. Starting with 'the 38 steps', this section proved an excellent beginning to the trek.Day two saw us walk on another part of the Jiankou part of the wall that led to the Muntian Yu section. This was an interesting today as Muntian Yu is a restored section and one of the more popular tourist destinations. The contrast between the unchanged and restored sections was very easy to get a feel of and helped encapsulate how different parts of the wall can be. Personally, I preferred the Jiankou section but that's not to say that Muntian Yu wasn't worth seeing. Indeed, the Luge back to the bottom of the hill was a lot of fun! That night we drove to Gubeiko and saw the sunset over the Great Wall. A wonderful sight with a beer in hand.On day three, we walked to the 'Crouching Tiger' on the Gubeiko section of the Great Wall. It was a tough climb to the unrestored wall but once there, the wall was yet again enchanting to walk on. We returned back to Gubeiko and our guide gave us a little tour of the village, which proved an interesting backdrop on the lives of emperors and people in pre-Communist revolution China. The guest house in Gubeiko was charming and the social area was a nice area to chill out in.Day four saw our group walk on another part of the Gubeiko wall - 'Hidden Dragon'. This was our longest day of walking and looking back, it was probably my favourite day. After leaving the Gubeiko section, we crossed through a lush forest valley and ascended to the Jinshanling section, which is another restored section. The Jinshanling wall was probably the most photogenic of all sections and we often stopped to marvel as yet more unmissable photo opportunities presented themselves. On day 5, we walked further along the breath taking Jinshanling section up until the wall becomes the Simitai section. Unfortunately, this was closed for repairs but is due to open soon. It looked spectacular. After the trek, we returned to Jinshanling for lunch and then drove for a couple of hours to a 'standard' city hotel where we managed to have yet another fantastic meal.Day 6 was our final day of trekking. We visited the Qing tombs, which again proved to be a fascinating insight in to the history of the last emperor (who isn't buried with his family - he was cremated) and his relations. In the afternoon, we walked on the Huangyaguan part of the wall. This was again refurbished but very quiet. It is part of the Great Wall Marathon and was another very scenic section of wall. That particular day was very warm for our group - 36 degrees Celsius. Despite the short distance, this was perhaps the most challenging day. After spending the night at this section of the wall, we drove back to Beijing, and had a free day to check out Beijing. Our guide was great for advice. Personally, I headed out to have a tour of the Olympic stadium but many others went to the Pearl Market. That night, we attended either a Kung Fu show or an Acrobat show, which finished off the holiday in style.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was called Kevin. He was a consummate professional who was very keen to make our stay in China as pleasant as possible. His English was very good. I personally loved his way of informing of us that we had to pay a bill - 'I'll go find out the damage'! From meeting the group flight at Beijing airport, to locating the best places to eat in different locations and just general advice, he was a fantastic guide. I felt safe throughout the journey, and he was very open and honest throughout. He was informative and willing to go well above the call of duty on many occasions. His knowledge of tourist traps was very useful too!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would advise that you would have to be reasonably physically fit to do this holiday. Not super-fit but able to walk long distances in hot conditions. Age isn't an issue; we had a 65 year old and two 67 year olds in our group and they put my 32 year old self to shame!I would thoroughly recommend taking your own toilet paper. All guest houses and hotels have western style toilets but few had toilet paper, and it's difficult to source more if you run out.Don't try to take deodorant or insect repellent in to the Forbidden Palace. They see it as a fire hazard and you will lose them! You can however take in cigarettes and lighters. Not that I'm bitter... Ha ha.Lastly, I would recommend not taking the group flight. I arrived at the hotel at 9am and the walking tour of Beijing began at 1 pm. I don't really sleep well on planes so I wasn't well rested that afternoon. The return group flight was late at night and I would have loved to relax one extra night in the hotel and fly the next day.

CYCLING VIETNAM - A great way to get fit

Friendly, helpful staff; quality hotels; nice roads and a great route.

Most Inspirational Moment

The last full day of cycling had about 30km on the flat then a 10km climb, 10km descent and then about 50km flat. The climb was challenging but not impossible. I was amazed at how much fitness I gained whilst on holiday. Since it was the last major day of cycling, I decided to ride as quickly as I could for the last 30km and was amazed that I continued to feel great as I pushed myself well beyond what I would have been capable of just a few weeks earlier. It was so nice to relax in the hotel pool after such a day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The leader was friendly and helpful. He had some great insights into Vietnamese culture and history.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I was the only person on my trip with my own bike (a touring bike). Whilst it was lovely to be on my own wheels, I think it was more trouble than it was worth. After buying a new suit in Hoi An, I ended up paying about US$200 in excess baggage so there was no real cost savings.

WALKING IN TUSCANY

Fantasic holiday, wonderful farmhouse, excellent food, lovely fellow walking guests – but maybe this trip is not for people who like the flat!!!!!

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing (walking up hill) for 4-5 hours and then getting to the top of the mountains where you can remember how far up it looked when you got out of the minibus at the bottom but that you had made it! Then sitting down and eating a lovely fresh packed lunch!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Liz was amazing - she was enthusiastic, friendly and patient. Great guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

In my opinon this is a great holiday for people who have walked the Lake District, Welsh or Scottish fells/hills. Walks are long and although not they are difficult, or technical, you still need to have a decent level of fitness as you are on your feet walking all day. Take mosquito spray with you.

CLASSIC DOLOMITES

A place to recommend!  Stunning scenery, a fantastic hotel with excellent food and facilities and the walking did not disappoint.

Most Inspirational Moment

It was such a feeling of exhilaration and achievement to reach the top of Mount Piano.  After a three hour walk and climb, the views were quite beautiful. In addition, we could see the floor of the valley below where we started our journey. The other trip of note was the climb to the 'Three Chimneys'.  With narrow and steep terrain and the occasional bridge, there was no shortage of excitement!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our Group Leader, Karl, was knowledgeable, interesting and looked after us well.  We were also treated to several 'Shaggy Dog' stories which added some fun and humour to the walks.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would advise anyone to take clothes for any weather as we had an assortment and needed most of our layers of clothes.  However, on the whole we were pleased to see much blue sky and great views.
