WALKING IN THE WESTERN DOLOMITES

I loved this trip – perfect combination of brilliant leaders (Albert & Eric), superb hiking, spectacular scenery and great company. I chose this over the Classic Dolomites since I don’t have a great head for heights but from what I saw and heard while I was there the Western Dolomites trip has the definite edge. One to put on your bucket list!

Most Inspirational Moment

360 degree views nearly all day every day. The Via Ferrata trip Eric offered on our (and in theory, his) day off - given my poor head for heights it says something for the confidence I had in him (and support from the rest of the group) that I decided to give it a go. I was really glad I did, we had a brilliant day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Albert & Eric were superb, can't praise or thank them enough. They were also wonderful company and a mine of information about the area and people. I can see myself choosing future trips on the basis of which ones they are leading!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't be put off by the sense from the website that this is the poor relation to the Classic Dolomites - it's anything but that! Quite the contrary I'd say. And don't decide on the basis of the comments about the hotel or food. Hotel Laurino was a really nice place to stay - it was great being in a town and being able to go for a stroll or drink in the evening, the rooms were lovely and impeccably clean, the staff were super and nothing was too much trouble. I agree with the reviews about the food - it's pretty average and a bit bland but the location, facilities and staff more than compensated. And there was buckets of food so it certainly wasn't a case of going hungry. Anyway save space for mid-morning and lunch at the refuges - they were fantastic.

TROPICAL ISLAND WANDERER - FAMILY HOLIDAY

Another great holiday from Exodus. A bit less full on than the other trips we have done (Egypt and India) which was good and Sri Lanka is well worth visiting for the scenery, people and food!

Most Inspirational Moment

Watching the elephants from the orphanage in the river when having lunchClimbing Lion's RockTravelling through the mountains - amazing countrysideWent out running a lot - everyone so friendly and amazed to see me running - feels quite lonely going out now I am back in England! (watch out for the dogs though!!)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suresh was a great tour leader, spent a lot of time and energy making sure all were happy all the time and keeping us all on track, even playing cricket with my son!

Advice for Potential Travellers

As other people have said there is a lot of time spent on the coach - although the roads are generally good and not too much traffic, the tuk-tuks and cyclists and the winding roads through the mountains mean that progress is generally slow (better down in the south of the island)

WALKING IN ALBANIA

A great introduction to the northern parts of this fascianting country!

Most Inspirational Moment

Standing on top of Valbona pass, looking in the one direction down into Theth valley, and in the other Valbona valley. Remote, windswept, with huge white mountians all around. Awe inspiring stuff.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dorien was great, very frienly and knowedgable about his country.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Brings some sweets and snacks with you into the mountains! Once you start trekking, there are no shops for 3 or 4 days, so a bit of chocolate wouldn't go amiss.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A wonderful holiday, a busy week of sightseeing and history with a brilliant tour guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra is amazing. The trek off the beaten track with a local guide was really good as was eating with a local Bedouin one evening. The night camping in the desert was fun. Seeing the sun set and rise out there was just lovely. Camel ride in the morning was good.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was extremely informative, really good English and happy to help with anything. Always on time, very organised and helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definitely worth a visit. The locals are really friendly people, even during Ramadan! Food isn't as cheap as I imagined but very tasty.

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

A great introduction to the Mont Blanc region with great accommodation, daily three course meals, great staff, a lovely group, and some stunning views of the surrounding mountainous landscape!

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching a peak everyday gave a great sense of achievement and certainly made the sore legs and bucket of sweat worth it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mark was very laid back and approachable.   It wouldn't be right not to mention Jayne and John who ran Chalet Chocolat.  Despite all the work they had to do with turn-over time between groups only being a number of hours, they provided varied three course meals and gave the chalet a very homely atmosphere.  They were very friendly and willing to help in every way (including an impromptu pick-up from town for some delayed members of the group).

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes, you really do need the waterproofs.  The weather forecast had suggested it would be sunny all week, however it did rain on one day (the whole day) and I was quite glad to have my hat and gloves on that day as well as my waterproof jacket and trousers. On the free day, go up with the cable car to Aiguille du Midi, then take a return trip to the Italian station and back. You'll get wonderful views of Mont Blanc, but more entertaining was seeing all the people out there in their snow gear trekking along.  Then take your lunch at Aiguille du Midi station, the canteen isn't very expensive.  Then take the cable car back to the halfway point (Plan de l'Aiguille) between and Chamonix. Walk to le Montenvers, then take the train down to Chamonix.  This was one of my favourite days.  The walking was a little harder than I had expected.  I think I read somewhere that a general level of fitness is required and if one was used to weekend walking then this is fine.  Although we all made it, it's worth being aware that the ascents are quite steep and at times feel a little unrelenting. There were plenty of breaks, however some practice with walking up mountains before hand might be advantageous.

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

Chalet Chocolat is a great place to return to after an exhilarating day of walking/hiking; the chalet hosts, John & Jayne, did their utmost to make us feel at home and comfortable; the food was fantastic, with different home baking every afternoon. The Alpine walking was hard work at times but the views, flowers, wildlife and company made it all worth while.  What a fab (albeit tiring) week!

Most Inspirational Moment

Just before reaching the summit on the last walk (Aiguillette des Houches 2285m), we saw 2 bearded vultures, a wonderful sight. The chalet hosts, John and Jayne could not have been more helpful and welcoming and both of them were happy to answer our questions and queries.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Anne was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient.  She was very patient with me - I was forever stopping to sniff, admire, ask about and photograph the multitude of Alpine flowers and plants along the routes.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take clothing for all weathers and your swimsuit for the hot tub if you are in the Chalet Chocolat.  The 39degC water was excellent for the aching legs and feet after a long day on the hill!  It's a long day and be prepared for long, steady ascents. For a fantastic dinner on your free day, try the Aiguille du Midi Hotel restaurant - excellent food, staff and ambience. Do take the Aiguille du Midi cable car, get there early to avoid long queueing.  It's wonderful at the top.

THE ITALIAN DOLOMITES

A fantastic week’s walking in wonderful scenery, staying in an excellent hotel.

Most Inspirational Moment

The walking was varied, ranging from easy to moderately challenging. We added in some extra sections on some walks to make them a bit more challenging; this was easy to do given the maps provided and the well signposted paths. The best day was the Tre Cima walk but make sure you do the full version to avoid some of the crowds!

Thoughts on Group Leader

This was a unguided trip, but the maps and walk notes which were provided were excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared to vary your route if you are confident at map reading and want a bit more of a challenge. Make use of the hotel's three (!) saunas - no one else seems to. Don't expect to lose any weight on this holiday - the quantity and quality of the food in the hotel will not be outweighed by your exertions.

WILDLIFE & WILDERNESS OF ALASKA

Fantastic combination of wildlife and scenery in Alaska's top destinations. The combination of stunning glaciers, fjords, mountains together with humpbacks, moose, bears, sea otters, beaver and caribou made this an unforgettable holiday

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many - the top three were :a) Watch humpbacks breach in Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords National Parkb) The 90 minute scenic flight over the Bagley icefield from McCarthyc) Watching two grizzlies, each with three cubs on our bear watching trip

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both group leaders, Rebecca and Leah were very good. They organised the group well, got the right level of group participation from the outset and interacted with and informed the group very well.Rebecca's cooking was exceptionally good

Advice for Potential Travellers

The only advice3 would be to take after bite in addition to deet spray as the mosquitos in certain areas were a problem

MONGOLIAN ADVENTURE

This is a challenging trip through a remarkable, amazing country which still seems "new" to tourism.

Most Inspirational Moment

The vast and beautiful grasslands of the steppe and immense landscapes of the Gobi Desert are truly amazing.  What was remarkable was that it was completely unbroken by fences or roads.  Go during Nadaam.  The festival is wonderful and colorful.  Insist that your guide allow you to stay through to the end on the last day.  It is worth watching the finals of Mongolian wrestling and all the awards to the winners.

Thoughts on Group Leader

She was very sweet and worked hard, but her language skills were definitely less than ideal.  That said, she did an excellent job of arranging meals and accommodation.

Advice for Potential Travellers

When other reviewers refer to the ride on the Mongolian dirt roads as "bumpy," they are understating.  It is often lurch/twist/throw you off your seat bumpy.  Anyone with back issues should definitely think long and hard about this trip.  That said, I developed sort of an attachment to our Russian vans, even though we had to push ours twice to start it!

AMALFI COAST: POMPEII & PIZZA - FAMILY HOLIDAY

Billed as a holiday for families with teenage children this sounded perfect. And it was, in fact all our expectations were exceeded. The billed trips e.g. to Pompei, the ‘Walk of the Gods’, Vesuvius to name but a few, were well orchestrated and fun, but Eduardo the local guide and host put on some real fun extras, and the hotel staff were great. Making pizza may not sound a lot of fun, but it was for the kids while the adults looked on laughing and drinking the excellent local wine (all you can drink for Euros5). Highly recommend this brilliant holiday for that tricky age group the teenager.

Most Inspirational Moment

We enjoyed Pompei and the guide was amusing and informative. The grown ups loved the (unscheduled) trip to Romello and we were lucky that we arrived at the resort the evening of a wonderful local festival. You should go to that if you have a chance even if you feel knackered from just arriving.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eduardo Palermo knew EVERYONE. Local but world travelled he had a story for every occasion and laid on extras as he saw fit (like stoppoing off at a limoncello maker that he knew and was open as we walked by). Worked very hard, even on his supposed day off and made the trip great

Advice for Potential Travellers

We were lucky with the weather but I gather it can get very hot, so watch that.
