Vietnam Cycling Trip - Owen Legge

A great trip seeing the country of Vietnam on two wheels. Tour leader, Long, loves his job and had pleasue in showing us the lifestyle of the locals.

Most Inspirational Moment

Riding up the Hai Van Pass, the country kids delight in seeing the cyclists, the food and the sights.

Thoughts on Group Leader

A top tour leader who is friendly, approachable and a grand bloke.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Ride your bike more and do some hill work.

Vibrant India

Beautiful, wonderful place and a very well organised holiday with a great combination of trekking and culture. Helps if you like camping!

Most Inspirational Moment

Meenakshi Temple in Madurai. Kathakali dancing. Walking in the Western Ghats. Cows with painted horns in Tamil Nadu. And just the life on the streets as we drove through towns and villages - good humoured, colourful, traditional and modern at once.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Santosh was a great group leader and a good companion. Intelligent, enthusiastic, organised and fun. He is an asset to his country and to the organisations he works with.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The grading is fair at grade 3 as the hiking challenges are not sustained. Be prepared for walking uphill in the heat and downhill on rough paths that were hard on some folks' knees. Camping is not my thing so I didn't expect to enjoy that aspect. However, I do think the camping could be made more comfortable: >Squatting is difficult in trousers and toilet tents in the dark are a nightmare I will avoid in future (remember to bring a head torch) - is there a better solution? >The tents were old fashioned, didn't close properly, were too cosy for two and had no cover sheet on the veranda for bags and shoes. Better tents would help. >Instead of providing a basin of water to hunker over in your tiny shared tent, it should be possible to set up some ad hoc showers on one or two nights. >You need a 4 season sleeping bag in January. It dropped to -2c on one night and few of us slept.

Atlas descent

A great trip through stunning mountainous morocco

Most Inspirational Moment

The last day was brilliant with amazing descent from up high down to the beach

Thoughts on Group Leader

Liz was good fun, very patient, good at punctures and ridiculously healthy (overtaking everyone on the hills and making it look easy)

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip is very tough and there is not a great deal of free time so be prepared, make sure your fit enough and it's probably best if you have a bit of off road experience (I never and it took a bit of getting used too)

Cuba cycling

A BRILLIANT HOLIDAY.

Most Inspirational Moment

I would say admiration for the strengths of Cuba's social ideals (there are of course great weaknesses in it too) & the friendliness and apparent contentment of the Cuban people. Also you can't also fail to be inspired by the beauty of the country and the Spanish colonial architecture.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Laz was fantastic. A trained teacher who loved his job as a tour leader. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, competent and amusing. He told us amusing personal stories and talked openly about his country. With regard to the cycling before each section he carefully described the terrain and any potential hazards. It probably explains why not one of the 18 of us got lost, fell off or had any sort of accident. He took us to some wonderful restaurants -my favourites the lobster and also the garlic shrimps.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do go there soon. MAKE IT YOUR NEXT HOLIDAY. January was a good month to go. Cycling is a great way to see a country but if cycling is not your thing go to Cuba anyway.

Cuba Cycling Jan 2015

A unique country and a fabulous holiday! A heady mix of great scenery, friendly people, top cycling, vintage cars, music, dancing, Caribbean coastline and cocktails galore!

Most Inspirational Moment

Almost getting the hang of Salsa, Trinidad, the mountains of Sierra Maestra, history all around, and great fellow bunch of travellers!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Laz was brilliant, very organised, friendly, great sense of humour and nothing was too much trouble. He anticipated every question typically raised by new visitors to Cuba and his passion for his country was infectious! In summary, the trip ran like clockwork thanks to him and his excellent support team of Tuna and Manuel!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go before it changes now that the USA looks like it may lift the long standing (and totally unjustified) trade embargo. A trip in January is just right for enjoying perfect Cuban weather (warm but not humid) and avoiding grotty British weather!

Cycle Kerela and Tropical India

Our first time to India and the country just blew us away. We enjoyed all of the cycling including that which at first sight seemed impossible. Once you understand how the Indian’s drive you will love it! India is a densely populated country and half the fun of cycling here is to participate along with motor bikes carrying whole families, tuk tuks, oxen carts and random cows horses and other livestock – not to mention the legions of smiling school children who all rush out to high five you. Unusual obstacles including unmarked speed bumps, wheat being spread over the road to thresh it, impromptu religious celebrations and wedding processions all add to the fun.

Most Inspirational Moment

Well a 25 mile downhill through truly spectacular scenery takes a bit of beating but I was also moved by the little Syrian church of St Thomas (the doubting apostle) where there has reputedly been a church since 50AD. I loved the enthusiasm for all religious activity. I noticed in one church that Mary's customary blue dress had been replaced with a dayglo pink sari. My husband also took me for a romantic dinner in the beautiful courtyard garden of the Old Harbour Hotel Cochin......highly recommended!!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Saffi was a lovely kind caring guide as indeed were the whole team.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes. If you enjoy a drink after your efforts and don't want to drink beer buy your favourite tipple at the airport. Alchohol in its various forms can be tricky to get hold of! Take your flip flops because some bathrooms are a bit grubby. Do loads of reading up on the places you will visit before you go and take your own guide book. No-one minded us wearing Lycra shorts despite formal advice to the contrary.

Winter hike

Overall this was a very good holiday in a beautiful country with some lovely people.

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting to the top of mount toubkal, we were so lucky to have fantastic clear blue sky's and the views were truly amazing

Thoughts on Group Leader

Due to the size of the group we had two group leaders and two assistant leaders all four of them were very nice and keen to help

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is tough so I would recommend training well. Also take a book or some cards as the nights can start to drag on.

Moroccan Fun

First trip to Morocco – third with Exodus – This trip was one of the best I’ve been on – compares to any place on the planet for beauty – rocky trails superb and challenging – great hotels and great group – Liz was the best guide I’ve ever had (in 30 years of trips) – I’d do this trip again and again.

Most Inspirational Moment

Descending through the villages - riding past the smiling people

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic - best ever

Advice for Potential Travellers

Come and do it

Cycling Cuba

A well organised trip with a lovely group of fellow travellers

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the way Cuban people live and how committed they are to the country despite the hardships they face daily.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Laz our group leader was exceptional in that he was exteremely knowledgable and nothing was too much trouble.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Cycling generally moderate with really just one tough day.

Trails of Vietnam

When I decided on going to Vietnam, I wanted an holiday that was active, but being a female in her early fifties nothing too demanding. This was perfect walking through local villages at the beginning of the tour to cycling towards the end. With Kayaking at Ha Long Bay in between.
This was a holiday that I will never forget, you are busy from day one to the end even when you haven’t got an active day you will be up early traveling to your next adventure. Because that was what it was 2 weeks full of all different adventures.

Most Inspirational Moment

Not sure you can pick just one out, Kayaking at Ha Long Bay the boat we stayed on was like being on a five star cruise ship only smaller, the food and service was perfect. Cycling along the Mekong Delta (Even through cycling isn't my forte). Cycling along the single track paths going over all the little bridges was great, pity my bum didn't feel the same. Walking along the Paddy field manoeuvring through the narrow paths without falling in the mud was very funny. Tunnels in Saigon. Last but certainly not least SHOPPING in Hoi An, made to measure cloths was a delight, good job we was only there 2 days or I would have had to buy another suitcase.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Thanh was our group leader, he was brilliant, he was a always on hand to help and advise the group, we was a group of 11 people, he arranged restaurants for all our meals when not included in the holiday after consultation with the group. Even though I am the most fussy eater ever he made sure they prepared a meat free meal for me. The group of 11 was friendly, Thanh became part of the group, joking and laughing along with everybody, but always staying very professionals. I would like to thank him for all his advice and making our holiday a success.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you have a reasonable fitness this holiday will be perfect, at time it can challenge you, I struggled with the cycling where others thought the walking was hard, but overall it is well worth it.
