Cycling in Transylvania

This trip gives you the ability to time travel. Starting in modern Bucharest, which has architecture and a street plan that made it worthy of the nickname ‘the little Paris’, then blighted by a communist period but is now gradually recovering. But the time travel really begins as the cycle tour winds its way on quiet country roads through peaceful villages which have some modern conveniences but otherwise haven’t changed much in a hundred years. At times it is hard to get used to the quiet, but then the silence is broken by a chorus of barking dogs in the distance and roosters crowing in the next farmyard. Much history is covered during this week, with daily sessions to explain the progression of the various peoples that have struggled over this strategically useful territory. We visited many Saxon fortified churches from the 14th century.

Most Inspirational Moment

Everyone knows the expression 'until the cows come home', but we saw it first hand. Many village homes keep a few cows in their back yard sheds. A local shepherd takes all the cows from the village to nearby hillside fields to graze, and at the end of the day, as they return through the main street, the cows of their own accord leave the herd and return to their respective homes for the night. Remarkable!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide, Raluca, is warm, cheerful, competent and very knowledgeable. She has a genuine passion to relate her country's ancient and recent history to the group. For this trip, she was the sole support during the rides (carrying tools and snacks), although we rode independently with set re-groupment points and vehicle support was on-call.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Romania is well worth seeing. The scenery is beautiful, the food is wholesome and fresh and the trip is excellent value. Bucharest is hot in the summer but the weather in Transylvania is pleasant.

Inca Trail in Comfort

Very well organised trip.A lot harder than the impression given on the website and very challenging if fitness levels not good. Altitude sickness can be a problem and do come prepared to cope with all weathers. The food provided by the porters carrying the luggage was excellent. If you like learning about history and being active this is the holiday for you.

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing the steep steps to the Sun Gate on the final day in pouring rain knowing we had finally made it to glimpse a first view of Machu Picchu virtually deserted

Thoughts on Group Leader

Raul Valle was excellent in his knowledge of sights, flora and fauna along the way and kept our spirits up when the weather changed. He set the walking pace according to our different fitness levels in the group. His organisation skills were excellent and his idea of having a group kitty saved a lot of messing about with the different groups of people responsible for taking care of us over the 11 days.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Keep your packing down to essentials only, take dry bags and be prepared to be physically challenged.

Vietnam adventure

We had a fantastic experience travelling the length of Vietnam. What a beautiful country. We certainly saw the main cities and towns. The internal flight was good and efficient and even the overnight train was good. The food was wonderful – lots of variety and very fresh. Hotels were very good, particularly in Hoi An. Parts of the trip were very poignant learning more about Vietnam’s recent history – wonderful to see how much of Vietnam has recovered. Will be interesting to see Vietnam in 20 years time – seems to be developing fast. I would love to return to see more of the mountains and countryside in the North.

Most Inspirational Moment

The trip around Halong Bay and staying overnight on the boat was wonderful - very beautiful. I also loved Hue and enjoyed talking to some local students. I loved Hanoi and Saigon. Both very different but exciting places. The beach in Hoi An and the food everywhere we went.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Danh was a brilliant leader. He was highly organised and made sure everything ran smoothly. He was very knowledgeable about everything from the best restaurants to the history of places we visited. He recommended great food specialities and cocktails. Danh was always smiling and helpful and went the extra mile to ensure everyone had a good holiday and took home some great memories. Nothing was too much trouble.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Most things are available to buy in Vietnam so you don't need to load up your luggage. Leave space for souvenirs. It is humid in August so drink lots of water all the time and take lightweight clothes. Although the rainy season is in August we actually saw little rain and if it does rain everything dries really quickly. In Saigon go up the tall tower for a cocktail with a view. Be prepared for a pacey but interesting holiday. Don't hesitate to go - you'll love Vietnam.

Amalfi walking holiday

Excellent trip. Really enjoyed it. Suzy was a brilliant guide, really new her stuff and was passionate about the area, the food, the people and the walks. We were doubly lucky to get a brilliant group who gelled completely. My belly ached from laughing nearly as much as my calves ached from the steps. The walks aren’t strenuous and we took loads of breaks to enjoy the scenery. The heat was the main killer and apparently it wasn’t even that hot!!

Most Inspirational Moment

So many highlights it's hard to pick - the scenery from absolutely everywhere, the crater round Vesuvius, the coastal views, cocktails in Revello, lemonade, limoncella and lemons on steroids!! Too many to pick. But if Suzy suggests something optional - Do it - you won't regret it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Super Suzy. She's a star. Brilliant guide. Passionate and enthusiastic.

Peaks of Europe - B E A utiful!!

My last three Exodus walking trips have been to the Dolomites and I was looking for something similar in respect of challenging walks with spectacular scenery, I wasn’t disappointed! The trip was recommended to me by a few of my fellow travellers last year so I had no problem making the decision to book.

Most Inspirational Moment

No particular moment was inspirational other than repeatedly coming across abandoned dwellings on our walks. In our busy lives it is hard to imagine that people chose to exist in such isolated and difficult to access areas. The simple life?

Thoughts on Group Leader

Oh my goodness! Our group leader, Alvaro. Words to describe Alvaro - enthusiastic, energetic, encouraging, witty, thoughtful, committed and basically an all round nice guy. He had an uncanny knack of providing an accurate daily weather forecast which included advice as to whether 'plastic' trousers would be required. Funny! He often made the group chuckle!

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a fantastic trip and well worth doing. I went on the challenging grade week. If you are relatively fit and enjoy longer days of walking then the challenging week would be for you.

Alpine Hiking Adventure

We can’t recommend this trip highly enough! The hikes were incredible–challenging, beautiful, varied, and expertly-guided. There were plenty of stops at local refuges for hot chocolate, coffee, and water bottle refills along the way. Our guide (Mark) was quite knowledgeable about the area, and our hosts (Rich and Sarah) were absolutely lovely. Sarah’s cooking was OUTSTANDING–a true highlight! Finally, we enjoyed terrific camaraderie and great conversations with the other members of our group.

Most Inspirational Moment

The first day we reached the Aiguilette des Possettes--a real accomplishment for the group! We ate lunch looking across the valley to the Mont Blanc range and its glaciers.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mark was an outstanding group leader. He was knowledgeable, passionate, humorous, and intuitive about the needs of our group. He knew when to challenge each of us, and when we desperately needed a rest!

Advice for Potential Travellers

A good level of fitness (and some experience hiking) is recommended. The trails are often very steep, somewhat narrow, and occasionally run along the edge of a significant drop-off. That said, our leader knew the trails well and prepared us for each segment. The best preparation is probably climbing lots and lots of stairs!

The Baltics

We arrived at the airport and Jolita the rep met us, but then we had to wait for the transport to come and collect us! She had to ring him to ask him where he was….. The first hotel was being renovated, the room was OKish, but I opened the window and being short couldn’t manage to close it without standing on the chair in the room. The breakfast room was far to small for all the guests. All the other hotels were OK, except for the last one, bright lights, music and a bit too far out of town, the room was dull even with the light on, but it had no main light just side lights, and no carpet, it was OK to walk into town during the day but on an evening even though there were street lights it was dim.
This was a cultural trip, but towards the end I was a bit “cultured” out. I also got bit/stung by either mosquitoes or horse flies, not nice.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Occupational Museum, The KGB Museum and the former Missile Site were amazing, as I was involved with the Cold War in the 80's. The Palaces and city/town tours were really good.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jolita the tour guide was exceptional, a walking encloypedia, her knowledge, the history of the places we visited, she gave us so much information, she really is a credit to your company.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you wear insect repellent every day even though you think you might not need it as it wasn' that hot, but the bites I got were nasty, I only applied repellent on a night but after the bites/stings I put it on every day.

Once in a lifetime adventure

This was a truely magnificent holiday, quite possibly/probably my greatest adventure yet. I loved every second of it, particularly the trek itself. Each corner gave us a new amazing view and another set of challenging stairs to climb (or descend).

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing to dead woman's pass and reaching the peak was a great achievement for everyone in the group and well worth the effort.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had an amazing group leader, 2nd guide and all the porters. All of them contributed to a fantastic trip, joking and laughing with us and made sure all our needs were accommodated for

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just do it, the worst part of this trip is the flights there and back and it's still well worth it... Although maybe look at the logistics of booking your own flights to avoid having quite so much time in the air/airports.

Fantastic Alpine Experience

An incredible week filled with exhilarating walking, spectacular scenery, a superb professional guide and a really great group.

Most Inspirational Moment

The 5 days walking were all incredible and the scenery was breathtaking. The rest-day telepherique ride to L'Aiguille du Midi and the time spent there right next to the climbers attempting the routes on Mont Blanc itself was visually amazing. Managed to see a baby Chamoix and her Mother on the last day!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our Mountain Leader guide, Mark Dodwell was brilliant the whole week. Professional, knowledgeable and motivational. He really brought the mountains alive for us as a group. Rich and Sarah, the Exodus guys who looked after us at the chalet were fantastic, and Sarahs cooking is absolutely to die for - best food I've ever had.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Moderate is probably a little understating the fitness level required to enjoy the trip. I would say Moderate with Challenging parts is probably more accurate. Expect to be doing the equivalent of ascending Scafell Pike each day, and walking 11 - 16km in distance for the 5 days walking. Some of the ascents are tough for those not used to hill walking and a couple of the descents are long and rocky. Definitely take walking poles.

A perfect week

A truly wonderful week in a beautiful area of the world. The views were beyond anything I had seen before and the fact that we had walked up and down many steps and hillsides to make it to these viewpoints made it so worthwhile and satisfying. The group leader was very knowledgeable and as a group we really got on very well which made it a very enjoyable trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top of Monte Tre Calli on day 1 in torrential rain and realising that it didn't matter what the weather did, it couldn't spoil the elation I felt on top of a mountain and couldn't take anything away from the wonderful views. It really helped me to feel like I could do anything.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was so thoughtful and sensitive to people's personalities and preferences - she seemed to know exactly what to recommend and exactly what to say. She obviously knew a great deal about the area and her passion for the Amalfi coast really shone through. She also knew the best guides to help us with specialist areas like Pompeii and Vesuvius and could answer any of our questions with a smile so that we never felt that our questions were daft even if they were!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't worry if you don't know anyone - just go with an open mind and the different people you will meet and make friends with will really open your eyes and help you to enjoy the experience. And don't forget to take a waterproof as, even in August, we had a couple of days with short sharp thunderstorms and I did regret not having something more watertight!
