A word of caution

A very interesting and varied route, even in the, atypical, very poor weather that was encountered.

Most Inspirational Moment

Each of the days contained something interesting. The ride on the second day through the Dune di Piscinas and the disused mine workings near the Miniera di Ingurtosu was both interesting and very scenic.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader Simone was very good. During a very wet week he remained extremely helpful and cheerful throughout, even lending his own waterproof clothing to a traveller who had brought none of there own. One of the group who had opted out of a particular days cycling because of the weather, and, not wanting to cause inconvenience since his bike had been packed away, was reluctant to rejoin after the weather had improved was positively encouraged to do so by Simone with assurances that it was no trouble. The support vehicle driver Ado was also excellent. Ado is the most proactive support driver we have encountered on our Exodus holiday, always cheerful and ready to help in any way he can. His fruit and lunch stop arrangements were amazing. Together, Simone and Ado make a great team.

Sicilian volcanoes

Travelling early in the season it was too windy to visit Stromboli on the hydrofoil and Etna had fog/hail and snow so we all walked with our guide Genny on the lower option as the vulcanologist couldn’t guarantee us reaching the summit. This was disappointing but on the plus side we loved our trip to Vulcano with a walk through the flumerols around the crater and a very smelly optional dip in the mudbaths and sea. The islands are stunningly beautiful and well worth a visit. Our walk on the western side of Lipari was stunning. Genny, our guide, saved the day given our longer stay on Lipari – she organised extra walks, with stunning views of the islands and a lunch with a local sicilian family which was amazing. Her love of the island and its people really shone through. The downside was three nights in Canneto rather than Lipari town in more of an apartment than a hotel (reception was closed most of the time and there was no evening meal available and a limited breakfast). Canneto was very quiet with a limited choice of restaurants and shops but to compensate for not visiting Stromboli Exodus organised an extra meal in a fish restaurant in Lipari town which was fun, we easily caught a local bus into Lipari town and came back in a taxi and the walk in one morning was quite easy and interesting. It’s worth exploring the old town, really quaint and unspoilt. Genny’s knowledge of the geology, flora and fauna as well as her friendly manner made the holiday, as did the lovely group we walked with. Etna was bleak and I’d suggest this trip was too early in the season for much chance of reaching the summit with the vulcanologist. Back at Catania I’d strongly recommend a taxi to Acitrezza to see the basalt columns. We took a boat trip around the rock formations here, visited the castle and had an excellent lunch – it’s a gorgeous town with a farmers’ market on a Sunday and we found this a great way to finish our holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

I found Vulcano fascinating - the initial smell of rotten eggs, the 'wild west' approach, the sulphur on the rocks and then a steep climb to the crater where we donned our scarfs and walked through the fumerols. This was a walk to remember. Genny took us to a beach on Lipari where the rocks looked splashed in paint - red, yellow, violet - it was gorgeous. We walked up to a crater on Lipari where crops were being grown, down to her house where we enjoyed an impromptu tea party and meet the only donkey on Lipari. We walked along paths with stunning views of both Stromboli and later Vulcano, to drop down into Lipari town. This walk which she organised was amazing and the highlight of our stay on Lipari. It turned what could have been a disappointing day into one to remember.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Genny is unflappable and conscientious with excellent interpersonal skills. She managed our holiday brilliantly. Walks were punctuated with information on the geology, flora, fauna and culture of the islands which was interesting and really added to the holiday. We enjoyed her company and her professionalism.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If possible I'd plan this trip for later in the year - it was too windy to visit Stromboli and the cars on Etna had only just come out of snow chains. Unfortunately we didn't fancy walking in the heat but if I were visiting the Aeolian islands again I'd pick late May early June. Our visit to Acitrezza on the last day was really fun, not sure I'd want to spend the day in Catania itself - the basalt columns in the sea and the castle were interesting and the fishing port is stunning. There was a farmers' market and Italians having a day out giving it a great holiday appeal.

Walking Mallorca

This was an amazing experience. Our leader Eduard was delightful and friendly. Each day when a picnic lunch was included he went out shopping for typical Mallorcan food, with different cheeses, sausages ey each day. He spread everything out on a tablecloth on a flat area and we helped ourselves…no pre-packed soggy tasteless sarnies for us! There were only 7 of us in the group and we all got on really well, and despite some rainy days when Eduard had to change the plan, we had a wonderful week. And the accommodation was fantastic too! Fabulous week.

Most Inspirational Moment

Everything was superb...Eduard, accommodation, food, walks, landscapes, fellow hikers...

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was great, delightful, always cheerful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Whatever the weather, whatever the makeup of your group....just enjoy everything, go with the flow...

Albania

A challenging ride through dramatic scenery. Beautiful countryside, friendly people but too many unfinished buildings. The trip was efficiently organised with good back-up and accommodation.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top of the 1000m pass on the final day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both leaders were excellent. They were well informed and spoke excellent English.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't be put off by the mountainous terrain. You can take it at your own pace.

Inca trail Titicaca Nazca 463

The best trip ever.

Most Inspirational Moment

All of it. From the start, right to the end.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Couldn't have asked for a better leader. Julio was a true professional. He is very knowledgeable. Nothing was too much trouble for him. I would be proud to have him as a mate.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get booked up and enjoy.

Flower filled meadows

An excellent, varied itinerary encompassing the different aspects of the area.

Most Inspirational Moment

Camenito del Rey. The flowers, possibly at their best due to the past few weeks of cooler and unseasonably wetter weather giving flash floods.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alex was a very experienced guide which showed in his daily manner and dealings with the characters and fitness levels of the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make a firm request for bed type selection. I asked for a twin room. My husband and I had to share a very small double bed which affected our sleep quality. The owners of the property were not helpful although there was the possibility of replacing a double bed with 2 singles from the store. In my opinion single beds pushed close together are a better option when running group holidays therefore giving the option for singles or couples to share a room comfortably. There was no hand soap. Take your own. Don't expect the bathroom to be cleaned in the week although the towels were changed mid week. Drainage problems in the showers in rooms 1,2,3.

Reply from Exodus

We would like to thank Marilyn for her feedback. We were pleased to read that she found the itinerary to be excellent and varied, but we are very sorry to learn of her disappointment with the size of the double bed in her room and that she experienced issues with the bathroom. We are of the understanding that the hotel’s owners tried to find an alternative room with a more suitable bedding situation, but we remain sorry if Marilyn felt that more could have been done to assist. We have been advised by the hotel’s owners that the bathrooms are cleaned every other day, but we regret that Marilyn found this to not be the case. The hotel’s owners have also informed us that the drainage issues in the bathrooms have been looked into and fixed, which we trust will improve the experience of future clients. Essential Peru and Amazon extension

This trip does everything it says it will do, BUT, do be aware that where the trip notes mention long days that is exactly what happens. The scenery is spectacular for most of the trip so settle back and enjoy it.

Machu Picchu lives up to all expectations, so if it seems a bit of a faff getting there just let it work its magic on you when you get there.

Cusco is sublime. You have some free time there but you’ll love it, just grab a Pisco Sour and watch the world go by.

Most Inspirational Moment

Machu Picchu doesn't disappoint, watching all the condors in the Colca Canyon was wonderful........BUT 5 jaguars on the Amazon. Blown away.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Right, first off Peruvian plugs are TWO FLAT PIN PLUGS!!!!!! If you buy the standard Boots/travel plugs that say Peru but have two flat pins and one round earth pin THEY WILL NOT WORK except in Lima. I had to beg borrow and scrounge plugs to charge my camera. Boots refunded me but be aware, their plugs don't work.

Great walks, great wine, great holiday

A really wonderful holiday with very different walks and enjoyable/informative visits to wineries well led by Ricardo and András. We enjoyed the holiday with a diverse and fun group that mixed Brits with Aussies and Canadians – keep doing this Exodus it added another dimension to our trip.
We enjoyed fantastic weather and it was good to be able to relax in hotels with excellent facilities – two infinity pools overlooking breathtaking scenery in one.
Lunches at the quintas were excellent especially the organic winery.

Most Inspirational Moment

Personal highlights for me were walking through a meadow that were bursting with colour from the sudden blooming of thousands of wildflowers while the adjoining vines terrace was being ploughed by a horse and following a levada until a beautiful meeting place of two rivers.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ricardo was a very good group leader who had researched and organised the excellent itinerary. At all times I felt that he was conscientious about safety and the needs of group individuals. He was ably supported by Andras. Both took excellent pictures of the group and an evening highlight was looking back over the day's activities through the images.
