Enjoyable cycling in the Baltics - thoroughly recommended

This trip fully met my expectations. I had never visited any of the Baltic countries and I was pleased to be able to see something of the countryside and coastal areas as well as brief stays in each of the 3 capitals. I also wanted to return to cycling with a fairly gentle trip and the itinerary allowed for a reasonably leisurely pace with mostly quiet roads. I found the balance of cycling, sightseeing and relaxation (sampling local cuisine and drinks!) to be good. What made our trip special was a great bunch of fellow cyclists and a superb guide in Andrius.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Baltics are a fascinating area with a rich history and some lovely cities. Highlights for me were the day on the Curonian Spit in Lithuania, the seaside town of Jurmala in Latvia with its wonderful beach and cycling through the 'Estonian Switzerland'.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrius kept the group well informed about the areas we were travelling through and kept us amused with his keen sense of humour. He was able to make small adaptations according to the group's interests and the weather so we largely avoided the rain! The group bonded well and I think that was in part due to his skill in reconciling everyone's wishes. Due to the pandemic he had not done this route for nearly 3 years and I think credit is also due that he was able to arrange so many great lunch experiences for us along the way.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is not a trip for those who want to cycle all day every day at speed. It's about taking time to appreciate the areas you are cycling through and the most magical moments are seeing the mist lift to reveal part of the coastline you hadn't been aware of or eating freshly smoked fish in a fisherman's garden.

Baltic cycling review

Trip was worthwhile. Interesting cities. Good food. Excellent guide – Andreus – who made the trip special. He had a good rapport with the whole group and his knowledge of the Baltics was first class.

Cycle the Baltics - an eye opening ride.

A great introduction to Exodus for me. Although I had originally booked Northern Italy, that was cancelled due to Covid- this was a last minute booking – and glad I made it. Good local beer, pleasant well-matched company , lot of good locally produced food and an excellent tour leader Andrius Mazrimas with a very dry sense of humour ( which,on occasion, he needed). The cycling was not overblown (longest day 55kms) through mostly rural surroundings. Bikes were brand new and well suited to the terrain, though sturdy tourers rather than the racing style some may prefer. Hotels were all very good, with one exception, which is the only reason I haven’t rated this holiday ‘Excellent’. I will definitely be looking at some of the other options in the Exodus catalogue. Well done Andrius and thank you for showing us the heritage of some beautiful countries.

Most Inspirational Moment

Probably the Hill of Crosses - and our day on the Curonian Spit with a view over the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad (formerly Koenigsberg)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrius Mazrimas is an experienced leader, with a great sense of humour. A knowledgable local with colloquial English and proud of his heritage, Andrius and our driver Mandaugus made us feel ' all of one company '.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I was charged a Flight Supplement in order to make use of the Exodus Flight package to and from Gatwick. I would try hard to make my own flight arrangements on a future trip as I live quite close to an easier airport.

The amazing Baltics

Thanks Exodus for working with us to make this trip happen. Cancelled in 2020 and 2021, due to COVID, we we finally made it in 2022.
The Baltics are amazing, so rich with history, spectacular scenery and the weather was great.
Best part of the trip was Andrius our remarkable guide. His knowledge of the Baltics is commendable, his humour infectious and his ability to adapt outstanding. His recommendations wether it was to the route itself or for places to visit or eat were well received by all. Thanks also to Mindaugas our driver who always where he needed to be.
Definitely recommend taking a tour with Andrius.

Randy and Annette

Tip top tour leader

We were lucky enough to have Andrius as our guide. He ticked all the boxes you’d want from a tour leader, and then some. Aside from a cracking sense of humour (that initself says he probably should have picked a career as a stand up comedian), most impressive was his ability to adapt and innovate as went along, meaning we got the very best out of our tour. Exemplary stuff, chapeau.

Gastrocycle

A gastronomical experience on 2 wheels. Every day had a culinary surprise including grilled salmon, onion (not the crappy French) soup, onion pie, pink soup, mushroom soup, venison, pork knuckle and Zeplins!

Most Inspirational Moment

Swimming in the Baltic Sea in all 3 countries and in Lake Galve by Trakai Castle. Visiting the Cold War Museum and nuclear missile bunker (which really should go on the itinerary).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrius is the master of the flexible plan and suggested that we abandon the planned cycle in the rain and crafted an excellent ride in the sunshine. Importantly Andrius is old enough to have experienced soviet occupation and is able to regale many tales of that era. He delivered much more than was expected, with little surprises and optional extras. He clearly enjoys his job.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Alcohol limits are much lower than in the UK. Cycling under the influence of alcohol is never a good idea.

Sunny Baltics

The trip was very interesting with lots of variation, capital cities lovely little fishing villages. Lots of culture and history and easy cycling. Excellent food. Andries was a really great tour leader with a great sense of humour.

Most Inspirational Moment

The villages around Peipsie lake .The hill of crosses . Cycling around Vilnius. Swimming in Trakai lake.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrius was a great tour leader with a brilliant sense of humour. He was very knowledgeable and a great story teller. He definitely went the extra mile nothing was ever to much trouble and some special little surprises .

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just do it you will have a great trip.

A wonderful trip

A thoroughly enjoyable and interesting trip. The Baltic states are great places to cycle with lots of dedicated and well maintained cycle paths away from the main road. Cycling through beautiful forests and by lakes and the sea, we also had time to sample the culture as well. Very good food too. Highly recommended.

Most Inspirational Moment

Almost too many to mention but top days included: Cycling through Laheema National Park and Curonia Spit National Park plus the Witch Wood; smoked salmon lunch in the museum; onion soup cafe!; Trakai Castle; swimming in the lake by Trakai castle; organ recital in Riga Cathedral

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrius was a great group leader - great sense of humour, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the Baltics and through his story telling skills bought the history of the country to life. Was alert to the needs of the group and ensured that were able to do our choice of activities whether minority or majority. We were lucky to have him take us this beautiful region.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be relaxed, follow your guide's advice, go with the flow and take a swimming costume

Cycle the Baltics

Easy cycling with mostly flat terrain throughout. The three main cities, Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius are all a very interesting but quite different. The climate drier and warmer than I expected but maybe we were lucky. Food and drink really good.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling the Curonian Spit and I really enjoyed the folk night in Vilnius contrary to expectations

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrius held my interest from beginning to end with his extensive knowledge and great sense of humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take your swimming trunks and have the smoked salmon at the fisherman's museum.

Enjoyable trip cycling through the Baltics

Overall this was a very enjoyable trip, visiting the Baltic capitals and countryside, learning about the history of the countries and enjoying some very good local food. It is a relatively flat route through the countries on some very good quality cycle paths and roads (compared to the pot holes in the UK) and the distances are not too challenging.

Most Inspirational Moment

There was some enjoyable cycling, interspersed with some unusual but very interesting sights such as the Hill of Crosses and the Nuclear Missile site in Lithuania, which were about as different as you can imagine but both worth seeing. The nightlife in Vilnius was also a lot of fun!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Andrius was an excellent group leader, with great local knowledge, a sharp sense of humour, and able to tell interesting stories about the history of the places we were visiting. He was well organised, and coped well with a couple of first aid incidents! Food choices were good (the smoked fish a personal highlight!) and having a plan B on the only day it rained was great as well, as it meant we cycled an alternative route, while still heading in the right direction for the final destination, which the group appreciated.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go with the flow and you’ll have a very enjoyable trip
